Re: Standscan question

2013-03-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Arnold,

The StandScan Pro is a box with a bottom and one open side. It can take a sheet
of A4 or foolscap, or an open paperback book. I posted here the results of two
scans of a double-page of a paperback done using the StandScan Pro and Prizmo.
The results were excellent!

I'm glad there's now a reduction on the price for a short while, but I don't
regret paying the full price for mine.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Braille app to help a sighted person learn

2013-03-17 Thread Esther
Hi Raul,

Why don't you (or the person seeking recommendations) use the free ViA
app from the Braille Institute to search for possible apps? Type in a
search on "Braille" and look through list of apps ordered by rating,
then weed out the ones like AccessNote and Blind Bargains, that are
clearly not about learning Braille. The ViA app include apps designed
for instructors, as weel as for the blind and visually impaired, and
the person can go and read the linked reviews to judge whether the app
would be appropriate for his or her purposes. Some top-rated, and also
free, apps include PocketBraille Lite by Michael Doise (who developed
the VO Starter app for new iOS VoiceOver users), and Braille Driller,
which also seems more designed for basic learning and letters, rather
than fluent use. Don't forget that the BrailleTouch app is also a
great way to learn Braille. Again, this is below the level of
Richard's suggested tools, which are good references for contracted
Braille.

Here's the iTunes link to the ViA app, and some of the suggestions:
• ViA (short for Visually Impaired Apps) free, by Braille Institute
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/via-by-braille-institute/id528499232?mt=8
• PocketBraille Lite (free) by Michael Doise
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocketbraille-lite/id488563778?mt=8
• PocketBraille ($1.99, the paid version, but hasn't been updated in a
while) by Michael Doise
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pocketbraille-reference/id439153034?mt=8
• Braille Driller (free) by Kevin Neelands
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/braille-driller/id354092789?mt=8
• BrailleTouch (free trial version) by BrailleTech LLC

Re: Standscan question

2013-03-17 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I looked through the links, including the FAQ, on their page, to find the
answer to the following, and can not recall its being discussed here, either.
.People refer to the Standscan as a box. Is it a box with a bottom, or is it,
more accurately, a frame? If it has a bottom, is it clear? Especially if it
be a frame, it would be even more useful, being that if only one page of a book
fit into it, one could put it on top of the page to be scanned, leaving the
facing page outside the frame.

I am glad I ordered it, even if it ends up being most useful at photographing
single, flat pages.

Re: Help please! Text Grabber has stopped taking shots!

2013-03-17 Thread Esther
Hi Sandy,

I haven't had this problem with TextGrabber. I do find that I have to
clear the final action of what to do with the text, in order to take a
new picture. I've used the copy option, then scanned another item and
pasted the previously copied text at the beginning of the text as a
way of handling multi-page scans. I may choose the email option, then
save as a draft as a way to make sure results are saved in a way that
I can get to an intermediate step. You may eventually hit a memory
limit for how much you can copy and paste If you have lots if other
apps in your app switcher. So far I haven't hit a problem. If you
restart your iPhone can you get back to taking camera shots with
TextGrabber? Remember that I haven't had a chance to use this with
StandScan Pro yet. are you loading this up with other functions like
translation of scanned text, as well as lots of pages? If worst comes
to worst, you can try deleting and then reinstalling the app. Sorry I
can't think of more suggestions, but this app hasn't frozen on me yet.
Any other details you can provide of what you were doing might help.
Also, maybe you can try clearing out the history. From the main
TextGrabber screen, double tap the "history w" button in the bottom
left corner of the screen. On the "History" screen, double tap the
"Edit" button in the top right corner. Then, flick through or double
tap the "delete" options for each if your listed items, and flick
twice or else touch the right side of the screen to get to the
"confirm deletion" button and double tap. Go through the list, which
orders your history items chronologically, and delete some items.
double tap the "done" button in the top right corner of the History
screen when you have made the deletions that you want. Then try
double tapping the "camera" button in the top left corner to retun to
the main screen and try to take a picture.

Also, you can toggle the crop feature on or off by double tapping the
second button at the top of the screen. make sure this is still set
to be announced as "crop on" button, or the app will pause to prompt
you to crop when you take a picture. In that case, you'll hear "crop
gripper" after your shot, and will need to exit by double tapping the
"new photo" button at the bottom left corner, to return to the main
screen. Make sure you haven't erroneously double tapped buttons like
the one to change the crop function on the main screen. Ordinarily,
you should never be changing them - especially since the button
control to take a picture with the camera is at the bottom center of
the screen, and the button control to use an image from the camera
roll or album is in the bottom right corner, and the other
configuration buttons are all at the top of the screen. If none of
this works, please provide more details of what you were doing when
the app stopped responding. I'm running out if ideas, since this
hasn't happened to me.

Esther

Re: Attention: Standscan Pro discount code and bonus

2013-03-17 Thread Fred Olver
I am so excited to get this box which I will order tomorrow. I will be
attempting to use it to read mail for starters and hopefully other things as
I become more familiar with it.

Thanks for the idea of using it for bar codes, I may attempt to use it for
garment tags, too. If others have ideas which work please share them with
the list, I just thought of another, reading playing cards for marking a
deck.

, there must be a way to guarantee being able to find the bar codes. Very

Fred,

I think you will find that the need for 12 volts is something more
useful to us than to the average user of the box. I think that many people
will use this for shooting images of stuff, like small items for eBay etc.
Which reminds me, I have ahd some success using a barcode app and the box
to, say, roll a tin across the bottom, slowly, and thus find the barcode!
Worth playing with when people get their new toys!

Hi Rex,

Simply go to www.Standscan.com, there you can read about the Standscan
and
the accessories they offer as well as a few other products they also
sell.

Make sure you select the Standscan Pro and remember the discount code is
VIPHONE.

As Raul pointed out, by using the discount code you get the Standscan Pro
including the 9 Volt Battery holder at a 10% discount and in addition to
that you get the 12 Volt wall adapter at no charge.

Standscan also offers a second battery holder which uses 8 Double A
batteries. At 1.5 Volt each, 8 AA batteries will give you the full 12
Volts

which will give you the brightest light from the LED's, using a 9 Volt
battery will be a little less efficient and according to Sandy's
experience
may not give you always as good a scan result. The 12 Volt Battery Holder
is
an accessory and is $4.95 and you also get the 10% discount if you order
it
together with the actual Standscan. This means for approx.. $31.50 you
get
it all, Standscan Pro including 9 Volt holder, 12 Volt adapter and 12
Volt
battery holder. Normally the Standscan Pro alone is $29.95 and the
adapter
and 12 Volt holder are extras at $4.95 each. I believe their shipping
from

Hong Kong is about $8 so altogether it will cost you about $40.

Hi. You are correct that the holder is already included. There was a
slight

error in the offer and what they actually mean is that the adapter is now
included with the offer. I wrote a separate message in a separate thread

Hi, more on this app. I played with it a little more and saw that in
order for it to read, it uses cloud-based TTS reading. So this means
that which ever document you have loaded in the app, it uses data to
send the document to the net and then the TTS voice reads it to you.
So, this is a bit like streaming. I don't know how much data it uses
up with this method, but I don't see it as being a viable source of
reading text files. I also think it only supports txt files, but I
could be wrong on this point. I would still choose to use Voice Dream
Reader since it offers much more features and it doesn't use a
cloud-based TTS to get you that higher quality voice.

Something good about Text Grabber.

2013-03-17 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi,

Just a small observation re Text Grabber: once you have successfully ocrd
your page, you can read it using your different options in the rotor. I.E.
line/word/character. This is not true of Prizmo (Oh! What a traitor!) With
Prizmo, you can move a finger down the page and read by line, but it isn't easy
or very accurate, but with TG you seem to be able to read just like in an
email. This will save me a lot of trouble, as, in the past, I have tended to
save the file to notes or email it to myself, but now I think I will be able to
access the info straight off, good for the odd menu etc eh?

Re: TextGrabber Questions

2013-03-17 Thread Sandratomkins
hi Les,

probably, I am not the best person to answer this, as I am new to text
grabber, though, already, pleased with it! Especially, when used in conjunction
with the StandScan Pro. Esther is perfectly right (as always! Sniff.) Text
Grabber is more difficult to use free-hand, whereas, Prizmo has better
tollerence, but with the increased accuracy of the box, Text Grabber is really
good!

As for the interface: 1. once you have opened the app, you are placed
directly into camera mode. The screen is already looking for the image! The
button to take a picture is just about above the home button, but I think, so
long as you don't change the focus accidentally, you can just double tap and
the picture will take straight away from the opening screen, as the focus is on
the camera button by default. However, I will have to play a little more before
being absolutely sure. So, in short (always a joke with me!) open the app,
place the phone on your new StandScan Pro (lights on!) and double tap the
screen. Now, text Grabber doesn't, as far as I can ascertain, have a spoken
mode for taking the shot, so double tap carefully, but on good thing I have
noticed, there is a slight time delay between the tapping and the shooting,
allowing the phone to settle, and so not be affected by the tapping. Once done,
the app does the rest for you! it will process and you will hear a trill when
the page with the ocrd page is displayed. A double finger slide/flick up or
down will read the whole page to you. Thus, it seems that once the app is
opened, we only need to double tap once and all is done! Although I am
something of an aficionado at Prizmo, I do much prefer this very simple
interface.

As for settings: Once the app is open: touch the top of the screen, flick
right a couple of times till you hear settings (as with many apps, VO announces
the word settinfs amongst other stuff, just listen out for the word settings)
in settings flick right until you hear "cropping" and you want to turn that
off. plus, unless you want to fill your camera roll with text shots, flick
right a couple more times and turn "save image" off as well, then touch "done"
top right of the screen and you will be back in the camera screen.

In all this talk about the StandScan Pro, we haven't mentioned about how to
position the phone on the top of the box accurately. I reported how, in the
past, when practising with the ScanBox, I found it necessary the put markers
for the corners of the phone, however, because the aperture on the StandScan is
bigger and round, it is possible to position the phone, aligning it using the
side of the box, roughly half a half inch away from the edge of the phone and
still just be able to feel the edge of the aperture. So, I haven't put any
markerw on my StandScan Pro yet, but people might still find this a useful
thing to do.

Happy snapping and do feel free, in fact, please do, report back to the
list to let us know how you fare using your new toy. I think it necessary that
anyone using this, should share their experiences, as this is a sort of new
departure for us, a new way of doing things and we can share tips and tricks,
plus any difficulties can be solved with other peoples' experience.

Some safari questions

2013-03-17 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,
OK, I haven't used safari much on the iphone, but I have a few questions.
What's the best way when I come upon a form on a web page, and it has a
combo box with a dropdown. What's the best way to navigate getting in to
it, and making a selection within that combo box?
Also, how do I get to the button to refresh the page quickly?

Thanks,

Re: Attention: Standscan Pro discount code and bonus

2013-03-17 Thread Sandratomkins
Fred,

I think you will find that the need for 12 volts is something more useful
to us than to the average user of the box. I think that many people will use
this for shooting images of stuff, like small items for eBay etc. Which reminds
me, I have ahd some success using a barcode app and the box to, say, roll a tin
across the bottom, slowly, and thus find the barcode! Worth playing with when
people get their new toys!

I like this keyboard because of its portability. It folds in half an comes

This keyboard is definitely smaller than the Apple bluetooth keyboard. There

2013-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Keith and Mich,

A CD or DVD case or certain boxes should not be a problem. Obviously a box
that is 6 or 8 inches won't work since it would mean it's way to close to
the top of the box where your phone lies.

I believe Anne or Sandy or maybe both posted scan results from a book, once
again, a long as the book fits in the box it should be OK.

Any chance it can image for scanning an opened paperback book?

iPad as computer mouse?

2013-03-17 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone has ever played with any of the apps that
let you use an iPad as a trackpad for your computer? The idea here
isn't to be able to control your computer remotely in the way that
apps like vnc or log me in would do, more to give you a different
input method than using the keyboard all of the time.
I've played about with the mouse on my computer and I've got better at
using it, but totally blind mouse users face some issues - mainly that
it's sometimes hard to tell where the cursor is - E.G. top left of the
screen and that it takes practice to move the mouse when you've run
out of space on your mousemat. An iPad app should solve both of these
issues; you'll be able to learn where things are on the screen because
you're using a screen to control the cursor and moving your hand is as
simple as lifting your finger and moving it to the left of the screen
for example.

I've tested some free & cheap apps - remote mouse, touch mouse and
mobile mouse but these all have issues:

A noticeable amount of the screen contains buttons. The ideal app
should dedicate the entire screen to the touchpad functionality so
that you don't inadvertently open a new window when vo is turned off;
obviously this is a blind requirement so it's understandable that not
every app does this.
Strangely, most apps use buttons to control left click, right click
etc. This isn't ideal as vo needs to be off to use the surface, but
idealy it needs to be on in order to press the buttons. In addition,
some apps don't even have a surface for direct mouse control and have
chosen to use buttons that incrament the cursor in a given direction
every time the button is pressed.

Has anyone found an app that doesn't have the above issues? If not, is
anyone else as interested in this as I am that they would like to test
the different available apps? The idea here would be that the work of
finding the best app could be split up between different people so
that we could find a solution as quickly as possible.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hallo to all, but especially those who have received their StandScan Pros,

I wonder, will people consider giving feed-bakc to the list as to how
you are finding the box and if it has improved your scanning/ocr experience?

We have seen, on list, a massive growth of interest in this product and
so it would be good to hear if it lives up to expectation. plus, if you are
having problems, their solutions may be resolvable by the rest of us. Also,
if, as I hope, this is really a game changer for us, it may hae other
consequences for future improvements/innovations.

Anyhow, I am desperate to know if I have done wrong in promoting this
product or if it has hit the spot!

Re: access notes issues

2013-03-17 Thread denise avant
Hi,
ok, i don't think i pressed the enter key. i just issued the command to rename
the file while inside of it, and then once i typed the name, i either hit the
back or done button or whatever it said - i do not have the phone in front of
me.
i don't think i moved the file anywhere. i don't know how to do that yet. i
will however see if i did a drop box sync, though i don't think this would
cause the file to disappear from the device.
but thanks for your help. this is suppose to be an easy app to use. maybe i am
doing something wrong though i did read the help file.

RE: access notes issues

2013-03-17 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi Anna, Try as I might, I can't get the delete strategy you mention to
work. I double tap and hold and swipe right. I hear the sound when I have
done the double tap and hold, but nothing happens when I swipe right. I am
on the note title and not in the note. The only way I have been able to
delete files is to delete them in dropbox and then sync.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Hi Denise,

To delete a note, find it in the list of notes, double-tap and hold, and
swipe right. Then choose Delete when asked to confirm whether to delete the
note.

You have to be in the note in order to rename it. With the note open, press
Option-R on a qWERTY keyboard or dot 8 with R on a braille one. An edit box
will appear where you can create a new name. Then press Enter, I believe.

I haven't had any notes disappear (knock on wood). Did you move them to a
different folder using your computer, by any chance?

Best,
Anna

Re: Standscan question

2013-03-17 Thread Andy Baracco
It’s not a scanner. It’s basically a box that you place your iPhone on top, and
your reading material underneath. You use an OCR app like Prizmo to scan your
paper copy and the box holds the phone in just the right position to assist in
getting a good scan. The box also has an LED to make sure that there is enough
light. It can be run off of a 9 volt battery, 8 AA batteries, or an AC adapter.
It’s simply a device to help a blind person to get better scanning results, but
it is not a scanner.

DigitEyes Custom Labeling Assistance Please

2013-03-17 Thread tcorson2
Is anyone making their own custom labels for DigitEyes? I am trying to
investigate this labeling system. I do have the paid version of the app and
have been working on trying to find bar codes, but that is quite frustrating.
However, I think the custom labels may be really an good deal. I know they now
have laundry labels which you can pin or sew on a garment and it will withstand
the hot water and dryer. These cost about $20 for 50 or so, but I would
consider them well worth the price. You can record an audio label on them.
Also you can buy a glue gun and stick permanently on containers that wil go
through the dishwasher. Still need more info about this system though.

I stillhave to figure out something about the use of avery labels and
customizing them. So, if anyone is familiar with this system, please help.

Robo-E, puzzle game with VoiceOver support got an update

2013-03-17 Thread Harri Pasanen
Hi,

I haven't seen Robo-E mentioned in this group. It is a puzzle game with
full VoiceOver support.
http://www.applevis.com/apps/ios/games/robo-e

The update includes more sound effects to make it clearer for VoiceOver
users that the move registered and what kind of move it was.
It also adds Game Center support and translations to French, Finnish,
Italian and Portuguese.

Full disclosure, I'm the author of Robo-E.

Happy gaming,

Harri

Re: OCR of PDFs on my iDevice. Can this be done?

2013-03-17 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Esther,

Just a comment re SayText: I have noticed that SayText is one of the best
apps at using the flash when the lighting is insufficient. Prizmo doesn't kick
in till the lighting is much worse and then it doesn't work very well, because
it doesn't seem to allow time for the Auto focus to work. SayText will turn the
flash on and leave it on before taking the shot. Saytext is really a sweet app
now that it has grown up and, although it will always require a degree of skill
in lifting that bit higher and keeping the phone flat, the way it takes the
shot automatically will always be worth giving it a try. I have already noticed
that my free-hand skills have slipped a bit since playing with these boxes, so
maybe I will need SayText's auto nature in the future.

Thanks again re the heads up for Text Grabber, I tend to dismiss apps when
they don't work for me at first. Also, I haven't played with the translation
aspect of the app yet, any hints as to that?

Hi, more on this app. I played with it a little more and saw that in order
for it to read, it uses cloud-based TTS reading. So this means that which
ever document you have loaded in the app, it uses data to send the
document to the net and then the TTS voice reads it to you. So, this is a
bit like streaming. I don't know how much data it uses up with this
method, but I don't see it as being a viable source of reading text files.
I also think it only supports txt files, but I could be wrong on this
point. I would still choose to use Voice Dream Reader since it offers much
more features and it doesn't use a cloud-based TTS to get you that higher
quality voice.

It actually looks pretty good. I was able to scroll to a certain part of

have not yet connected my dropbox account to it or added other things.
So the only experience I have so far is with the sample text. I switched
between two different voices and it all seems fine. I wonder what the
catch is or what the limits are considering that it is free. I notice
that it only has a 3.5 rating in the App Store. Perhaps I should go read
the comments to see what others have said. However based on the initial
impressions this app does look rather promising.

Hi Andy,

I have an iPhone 4S, but I seem to remember some people said the iPhone 5
had maybe slightly better sound, but I couldn't say from my own
experience.

Also, if I were looking for a phone but wasn't absolutely in a position
where I had to buy one right this moment or maybe I should say in the next
3

months, I would not buy an iPhone 5 now. There are a lot of rumours that
Apple is releasing this year's iPhone in June again rather than in the
fall.

They are of course rumours, but I think in the next 4 to 6 weeks we should
hear more about this and see if there are leaks to indicate that this will
be so.

I also saw some messages about some new thing where Apple will be working
with a number of hearing aid manufacturers to offer very good integration
between the iPhone and hearing aids. I could easily imagine that this is
something that may be a feature of iOS 7, but I am not sure if there is
also
a hardware component to it. If it is strictly a matter of iOS then it
should

work fine with the iPhone 5, 4S and maybe even back to the 4. If special
hardware is needed it would only be something that is supported in the new
iPhone that's coming this year.

I highly recommend the Today in iOS podcast, the guy who is doing that
Podcast, Rob, has been at it since just before the first iPhone came out
in

2007 and I think what he presents is well balanced and very informative.

Sieghard

Feed-back re the StandScan Pro? Successes/failures?

2013-03-17 Thread Sandratomkins
Hallo to all, but especially those who have received their StandScan Pros,

I wonder, will people consider giving feed-bakc to the list as to how you
are finding the box and if it has improved your scanning/ocr experience?

We have seen, on list, a massive growth of interest in this product and so
it would be good to hear if it lives up to expectation. plus, if you are having
problems, their solutions may be resolvable by the rest of us. Also, if, as I
hope, this is really a game changer for us, it may hae other consequences for
future improvements/innovations.

Anyhow, I am desperate to know if I have done wrong in promoting this
product or if it has hit the spot!

Opening App Link in iTunes

2013-03-17 Thread Alan Lemly
I'm curious about others' experience downloading apps with iTunes 11. I just
went to MamaPeach's LyricWiki link in her email. On that page, there was a
link to open LyricWiki in iTunes. When I clicked on that link, iTunes did in
fact open but it was displaying my music library, not the iTunes Store with
the LyricWiki app available for download. This has happened every time I've
clicked on a link to open an app in iTunes. Each time, I have to go to the
iTunes Store, select the Apps tab, search for the app of interest, and then
purchase/download it. Why is there a link on an app's webpage to open it in
iTunes if this doesn't work? Or if I'm missing something, I'd love to know
how others do this.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: Making Videos with iPhone 5?

2013-03-17 Thread Alan Paganelli
Yes, landscape always gives you better videos. It looks more like watching
a movie screen or watching it on TV which is what the sighted are use to.

Yes, iPhone does offer help when taking a still picture of a person. You'll
hear something like face in center of screen. When you hear that, fire.
You nailed it. If it says large face then you know it's a close up. If it
says something like small face in lower right hand corner, you are way off
target. Note, it takes time for the camera to auto focus and report it's
findings back to you so it can take awhile and there you are standing there
waiting wile the person your taking a picture of is getting impatient. This
does not work though when shooting video only pictures and then only facial
shots.

Hi, all.

Yesterday I shot my first video using the iPhone and attached it to a text
message. let's just say I was impressed with how easy it was and how well
VO provided feedback.

The people watching the video said it looked Okay visually, but suggested
that I turn the phone sideways I'm thinking landscape? because the actual
video portion was very small and there was a black border around it.

I'm totally blind, so going on what people are telling me. What can I do
to position the phone so that videos look better?

I use the back facing camera, and when I made the video, the phone was in
portrait mode. Would choosing landscape help visually?

Re: What and how do you use voice dreamer reader?

2013-03-17 Thread Arianna

huh. I thought for sure that the "Bookmarks"button would take you to the
bookmarks that you created, not let you navigate by sections. I suppose that
area would also contain user-created bookmarks, but I didn't think that DAISY
and EPub markup would be considered bookmarks in VDR.

Thanks,

Re: Voice Over friendly ring tone app

2013-03-17 Thread Alan Paganelli
I have bought ring tones from my iPhone. I've also bought music. It's
straight forward and simple. Assuming you've got an iTunes account, it
doesn't matter if it's a ring tone, a song, an album of songs or books
assuming you have iBooks installed on your iPhone. Once you double tap on
the buy button, a text box opens up and your asked to enter in your
password. Your user name should already be there. Your phone number is how
they tie that to your account so, when you type in your password and then
double tap enter, the download of what ever you've bought begins. It
doesn't matter what you've bought, it's placed for you where ever it needs
to go. For example an app will appear on the screen. A song or an album
will appear in the music folder. A ring tone will appear in settings,
sounds, ring tone.

Hi there. I am glad you find the app useful. It is true that it is not very
professional, but if you're looking for fun ring tones then this is the best
one that I have found. When you mentioned emailing the ringtones to
yourself, are you meaning on the regular PC or everything from the iPhone?
It is my understanding in order for ringtones to be added successfully, they
need to be done via iTunes on the computer. Although, there is a way to do
it from the iPhone since you can purchase ring tones from the iTunes app in
the iPhone itself. I have never done this since I have never purchased music
or tones from iTunes. So I admit that I do not have much experience with
this. I always make my own ring tones or get them from an app like the one I
suggested.

Thanks for this heads up. I downloaded the app and was amazed at the

email the ringtones to myself and put them into iTunes just by playing the
ring tone attachment.

The following is a good source for cool ring tones. Once you download them
using the app they show up in the file sharing section of iTunes when your
phone is connected. You get 10 free downloads and adds. If you upgrade to
no ads then you also get unlimited downloads. The cost for that is $1.99.
Have fun.

Re: Adding Music to iTunes Revisited

2013-03-17 Thread Alan Paganelli
MessageAutomatically add to iTunes is a very handy way to add new things. For
example, should you add ring tones to ringtones, or ring tones, or just tones?
If you have none of these in your iTunes folder on your computer it makes it
pretty tough to know how to proceed. This is why Apple added the automatically
add to iTunes. The files and folders you drop in automatically add to iTunes
will be added properly to iTunes for you. Anything that can't be added or
played by your device such as .WMA (Windows Media Audio) files will appear in
the not added to iTunes folder where you can see what was not added. At least
this you know that such files were not put on your device.

Re: Adding Ring Tones to iTunes library - Was Re: Voice Over friendly ring tone app

2013-03-17 Thread Alan Paganelli
If you've bought a ring tone or have added one successfully, then they will
be in the iTunes folder in your my music folder under iTunes media and then
tones. Any tones you want to add or delete you can do from this folder and
then once you've made changes, just sync your device with your computer and
the changes will be applied to your device.

Hi there. Have you tried adding the tones using the method that I
described in the message below your reply?

I recently bought about four tones from the store, easy as pie.

The unfortunate thing is that I set a tone for a particular contact and
it

works only some of the time and if it doesn't it reverts to the original
ring tone for the phone. I go in and check and the correct tone is
selected
on the contact and the next time they call it works but then another time
it

goes back to the marimba sound, which I don't even want to use because

ring tone app

Hi, you have to use iTunes to get the tones into the iPhone for use. So,
this app for example, has an entry in the file sharing section of iTunes.
To
get there, connect your phone to the PC, bring up iTunes, go to the
device

where it shows the name of your phone and the battery charge status. Tab
until you reach the apps button or tab. Press space to activate it. Now
you

are in the apps section of your phone. Now, keep tabbing until you get to
the list of file sharing apps. Once you reach this list, arrow down until
you get to the app which has the files you want to save. In this case,
look
for the ring tones app. When you reach it with down arrow, tab once and
you

will see the list of files it contains. If you've downloaded ring tones
prior to all this, they will be listed here. Using shift-down arrow,
select
all the ring tones you want to save to the computer and tab to the save
as

button. Press space to activate this button and a standard save as dialog
will open. You can press shift-tab to see the list of folders. Navigate
this
to choose which folder you want. I recommend a temp folder called ring
tones
on your desktop for starters. Giving you the steps on how to create
folders
and copying and pasting is a bit out of scope for this question, so I
hope
you feel comfortable in doing this. Once the tones are saved to the
folder
you want, close iTunes. The next step is for you to copy the ring tone
files
into the automatically add to itunes folder. Be sure to put just the
files

there, not the actual folder. Now when you restart iTunes, the ring tones
will automagically be added to the library. If you have your iPhone set
to
sync all ring tones, then they will all be added the next time you sync
your
phone. If this isn't set up that way, then you will have to tell your
phone

to sync all tones.

The following is a good source for cool ring tones. Once you download
them using the app they show up in the file sharing section of iTunes
when your phone is connected. You get 10 free downloads and adds. If
you upgrade to no ads then you also get unlimited downloads. The cost
for that is $1.99. Have fun.

does anyone know how to delete a note from access note? I would have thought
one could do it the same way you might do an individual e-mail.
also, the note I thought was lost is not. but I can say that though I renamed

And it appears that i have lost a note i took yesterday.
Has anyone experience problems with this app.

Braille app to help a sighted person learn

checked and am not quite sure of which app to recommend. The one which
looks promising is called Braille Sonar. The link is

Standscan question

2013-03-17 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

Does StandScan work only with single-page documents lying flat, or is image
quality still good for scanning with items thicker, such as a DVD case or box
of frozen food?

Any chance it can image for scanning an opened paperback book?

Thanks in advance. Keith

The only way it does OCR is to export to Google Drive.
Otherwise, the documents are simply pictures, not readable by VoiceOver.

Syncing Ring Tones Help

2013-03-17 Thread Suzanne Wilson
Hello,

At one time not so long ago, I had about thirty ring tones on my phone that
I had downloaded and synced successfully. Unfortunately, when I went to add
some new ones, I lost everything that had already been on the phone. The
tones still show up in my list of available tones. I go into the device
list, select my iPhone, and then tab through until I get to tones, which I
check. Further tabbing takes me to a "sync tones" check box. If I check
it, iTunes says "Are you sure you do not want to sync tones? All existing
tones on the phone Suzanne's iPhone will be removed." I have the choice of
either a remove or a cancel button. Since I have nothing to lose at this
point, I have tried checking the remove button and syncing. Needless to
say, nothing happens, as everything is already wiped clean. After that, I
repeat the same procedure. This time, the phone lets me check the "sync
tones" box and I don't get that message. I then keep tabbing to select all
tones and make sure that they are checked; then I press the sync button. In
this case, iTunes gets stuck on the first step of syncing and I get a
message that the sync has failed.

A search of the list archives wasn't terribly helpful. Is there any kind
soul who could help me figure this out? I would be eternally grateful.

Suzanne

Re: Beatbox revisited.

2013-03-17 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi, for those interested in downloading the mp3 file for this boo, I've
uploaded it to Sendspace. The download url is:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/fqy3ds

Like the person who recorded this boo, I have both the small Jambox and
your BeatBox speaker and came to pretty much the same conclusion as
@Freakyfwoof. I like both speakers for different situations and reasons
but I'm very impressed with the BeatBox for it's size and cost and love
the fact that unlike the small Jambox it actually has playback controls
for next/prev and play/pause. This is a fantastic little speaker that
sounds really big.

Best,

Good Saturday morning, all!

Here’s another demo, (not done by SpeedDots,) of the Beatbox.

As you will see, not only does it compare it side by side with the
Jambox as we did in our demo, but it also reaffirms, and hopefully
clears up the very obvious misconception that everyone (including us
until we saw it ourselves,) that a bluetooth speaker be it the Jambox or
the Beatbox, can, and will, show up as an airplay device.

RE: How do I select one of a number of searched for apps found in the app store

2013-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Neil,

I guess whether it's upside down depends on your perspective. Think of it
like a calendar that is hanging on the wall and where you flip up the page
of one month to reveal the next months underneath. You reach to the bottom
of the page, grab it and then lift your hand up in order to reveal the next
page underneath. This is the same on a picker box like the one with the
apps.It may seem wrong to flick up to go down, but it's just like doing a
3-finger swipe from right to left to go from Home Page 1 to Home Page 2.
Here you also swipe left where visually you go right because it is like
flicking over the page in a book, You grab the right edge of a page and then
the movement is from right to left to turn the page and this is how Apple
has implemented this.

Regards,

Sieghard

Count down - real time bus times - for London.

2013-03-17 Thread James Muirhead
A recent update to the count down app which appears as "bus times" on your
screen.

This is a free app which gives you a count down time in minutes of the next bus
or buses which will arrive at any given bus stop in London.

I frequently use a stop which has 8 different buses running through. Although
"next buses" gave me the theoretical timetable of the buses, it does not take
into consideration cancellations, delays etc.

With the count down app I can look up my next bus within the warmth of my
leisure centre and then either wait a while or just retrieve my dog from
reception and go to the stop knowing that my next bus will be there in 2 or 3
minutes.

I am now in the refreshing position of being able to help out other passengers
at the stop and let them know when their next bus is due.

The app also gives a lot of extra information to help with travelling around
London and it is fairly straightforward to use with voiceover. There is quite
a lot of advertising to skip through, but this gets easier with practise.

Regards James.

Re: downloading ringtones

2013-03-17 Thread Paul Ferrara
There is a way to do this; open iTunes, search for whatever you want. Then if
you have your setting to headings, find songs and flick up until you hear tones
or ringtones. Then flick right and hear your choices. Most tones are $1.29. If
you don’t have the setting to headings, you will have to flick right past
songs, albums, etc. It does work, and the tones are available. Before you get
the tone, you will be asked if you want it to be made the dafault ringtone or
to set it with a contact. Should you do either of these, you must tap on save
to keep the change.

Is there a way to download ringtones directly to my phone from my phone? Just
wondering as for some reason ITunes makes jaws very unresponsive for some
reason on my pc so would not like to use it if I can help it.

RE: How do I select one of a number of searched for apps found in the app store

2013-03-17 Thread Richard Turner
I made the same mistake when I first encountered this.

I guess Apple likes turning things upside down. But, I guess it follows
the logic of their other gestures; when you want to bring up the next page,
you flick up to bring the next page into view, so I guess this makes sense
in that context.

Enjoy,

Richard

I just pressed enter on the 2 original Siri links you posted, and
they work just as reliably as when you first posted them a few days

be the easiest to complete the download. In other words, the

Hello,
That demo is on someone's audioboo feed. You would have to poke around on
the audioboo site and see if there's a way to download it.
There might be if you can view the RSS feed of that person's timeline; but I
do not know the answer to that.

Perhaps someone here on the list knows if downloading an audioboo to your
computer is a possibility?
I do know that it is already on the site as an MP3; it's just a matter of
whether or not it can be downloaded.

RE: Adding Music to iTunes Revisited

2013-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Susanne,

When you say copying into the Automatically Add to iTunes folder doesn't
work, do you have iTunes open when you copy the files? I believe the way to
do this is to make sure iTunes is closed, then copy the files into the
Automatically Add to iTunes folder and once that's done open iTunes.

Let me know if you do it that way or, if not, maybe give it a try.

It works fine for me, but you can also add music simply by copying it into
the Music folder right away, that is the music folder that is in iTunes
Media.

After you have copied the music, open iTunes, go to "File" and "Add Folder
to Library". Now browse to the Music folder in iTunes Media, make sure it's
highlighted by pressing enter on it and then tab to the "Select" button and
activate it. This will import anything in your music folder into your music
library. If you already have music in there that is OK as it will not
duplicate anything that is already there.

Regards,

Sieghard

We’ve designed Earl so that every single function can be controlled

the double tap gesture followed by one of Earl’s voice commands.

For users who are comfortable using gestures, we have also built in
 some
gesture controls that can be used instead of voice commands for certain
navigational and playback functions. Voice over Users will find Earl’s

navigation in Earl when used in conjunction with our voice commands.

Hi Scott, & Sieghard,
I think Sieghard is spot on about the lighting and stability.

I have an iPhone 4 and Prizmo.

I have found that getting bright sunlight can make a lot of diffrence.

When all the stars are in alighnment, and I can get the right focus and
distance the results can be very accurate.

I ordered the Stand Scan Pro yesterday.

Hi Scott,

Since I don't have an iPhone 5 I can't do a direct comparison and in order
to get objective results one really would need to have both phones and do a
number of scans under the exact same conditions. However, I definitely
believe that having perfect lighting and a super stabil platform along with
the right distance and focus will make a much bigger difference than the
small improvement in the camera itself. This of course is why the Standscan
is such a useful device, really a game changer with respect to OCR on the
iPhone. After all, if you look at a device such as the Pearl from Freedom
Scientific, it is just a specialized digital camera mounted on a special
stand so you get exactly what the Standscan provides, a stabil platform and
good distance/focus. Of course the Pearl has other specialized features like
automatic detection for when you turn a page and all that, but I bet as a
camera it's no better than what the iPhone camera is and there is no reason
why the iPhone shouldn't be able to provide impressive scan results. The 4S
and even more so the 5 certainly have the processing power for accurate and
fast OCR and from the results Sandy and Anne posted the Standscan really
does make all the difference especially for us visually impaired users.

Take care,
Sieghard

I have not tried the 4s, so I'm not aware of how that compares, but
was told that the saffire lends in the 5 made a difference in terms of
working with glare. Not sure how much that would effect OCR, but I
gather that you think not much. So thank you for that info!

Re: Voice Over friendly ring tone app

2013-03-17 Thread Sherrie
Emailing the ringtones to myself on the computer was super easy to do.
After downloading the chosen ring tones to my phone I just clicked on the
more info and email ring tone was a choice. All I had to do was enter my
email (I have a shortcut so it only takes 2 letters) and double tap send.
Then I opened the email on my computer and clicked open on the attachment.
This made it play in iTunes and since I have my iTunes copy all played items
the tones showed up in the tones library.

Then I just had to sync my iPhone with the iTunes.
The app itself has very clear directions how to get the tones into the
proper place for syncing. And also for choosing them once they are on your
phone.

So I admit that I do not have much experience with
this. I always make my own ring tones or get them from an app like the one I
suggested.

The following is a good source for cool ring tones. Once you download them
using the app they show up in the file sharing section of iTunes when your
phone is connected. You get 10 free downloads and adds. If you upgrade to
no ads then you also get unlimited downloads. The cost for that is $1.99.
Have fun.

Yes, I just added it. You do a one finger double tap and when you hear a two
tone sound say "favorites". Wait and it will give you your options. Add is
number one so do the one finger double tap and say either 1 or add. Then it
will ask what country, follow the same process. Then what state and you can
say Ohio. Then you can say Columbus. The Columbus Dispatch is the only option
in Columbus so say 1 and it is added. The next time you go to the first page
Columbus Dispatch will be there. Be sure to remember that any time you want to
give a command you need to do a one finger double tap and wait for the two tone
sound. There are also gestures but I have not worked with them any. Let me
know if you need further help.

Sorry I didn't get back to you on this sooner. I'm inserting a
guide below
on the gesture alternatives for EARL. in our next release
(anticipating the
week of Feb 25 in conjunction with C-Sun), we have some updates to
our help
function that we hope will make it much easier to use.
Gesture alternatives for certain voice commands

We’ve designed Earl so that every single function can be controlled
using
the double tap gesture followed by one of Earl’s voice commands.

For users who are comfortable using gestures, we have also built in
some
gesture controls that can be used instead of voice commands for
certain
navigational and playback functions. Voice over Users will find
Earl’s
gestures familiar. With a bit of practice, these gestures can speed
up
navigation in Earl when used in conjunction with our voice
commands.

Re: What is wrong with siri?

2013-03-17 Thread RobH!
Huh!... I tried this, it asked if it was to search the web, so yes, do
that; so it found tons of entries with the words zip code and name of the
place, and never did give me a zip code straight.

Bill, it worked for her and then it worked for me after that, no idea why
that worked but thanks for the suggestion.

What happens if your wife asks this question of Siri on your iPhone?

Hello, my wife can ask siri for a zip code; when I do it, it says sorry I
don’t see any match in your contacts whereas it just lists zip codes for
her.
Any ideas why?
All of our settings are the same.

On another note, how does raise to speak work?

Thank you.

Hi Deneese.
It will work best with the iPhone 5, but also works with the 4 and 4S.
I remember reading somewhere that OCR results were not so good with
the 4, but read elsewhere that there was some success with the 4s and
5. But that has nothing to do with the product itself, rather, the
camera in the phone.

HTH,
Scott
