Re: In my case, the Seeing Eye GPS app is quite expensive.
Hi Kevin I own a Trekker Breeze. It works really well for walking and driving routes. It doesn't have the features related to adding POIs, you're stuck with what they provide. Typing in addresses is done letter by letter, far from the dictation capabilities with the iPhone. While I don't use the Trekker a lot, I did use it yesterday on a walking route I had saved in my favorites list, and the Trekker performed really well, announcing my destination as I arrived. Good luck. Les On Jul 8, 2013, at 1:42 AM, Kevin Minor kmi...@windstream.net wrote: Hi Sieghard. I’m not sure what I want to do yet. Paul, Navigon like most mainstream GPS products designed principally for vehicular usage will not allow you to use them for off road use. niavigon does not have a direction of POI or destination in terms of cardinal direction, and you cannot set a destination based on long/lat, in fact, you cannot enter these manually at all. iPhone Contacts alternative
Hello, I've been using IOS with VoiceOver for about 3 years. However, I'm new to iPhone and the contacts app. I'm finding this app a bit cumbersom. It takes many clicks to find someone and then select the way you want to contact him. I just want to make phone calls, and I can't put everyone in the favorites lits. Good afternoon all. All being well, at the end of August a friend is coming down to stay at my apartment. He is hoping to bring his Braille display, the Focus 40 Blue. You can use the contacts tab in the Phone app to basically have the same functionality as the Contacts app. If you want something else try Multiedit Contacts Manager. Re: In my case, the Seeing Eye GPS app is quite expensive.
Kevin, If your contract is over with ATT, request them to unlock the phone. I use T-Mobile, another GSM carrier. If you are in an area with good T-Mobile coverage, consider their basic prepaid plan. For $30 a month, I have unlimited data and texts and 100 minutes of voice. For more minutes, I use apps like Magic Jack that use the data connection to make voice calls. One of the reasons I have stuck with my job as long as I have is the ability to afford tools that extend my independence like the iPhone and the Seeing Eye app. Kelly On 7/8/13, Les Kriegler kriegle...@gmail.com wrote: Hi Kevin I own a Trekker Breeze. It works really well for walking and driving routes. It doesn't have the features related to adding POIs, you're stuck with what they provide. Re: keyboard
Hi, you can practice in one of two ways. 1. Press VO Plus K to go into the keyboard help learning mode. This is similar to the voice over help, but works anywhere on your iDevice. When you are in this mode, all the keys pressed, including VO hot keys will be announced. Pressing escape or VO Plus K will terminate the help mode and put you back where you were. VO key is pressed with control and option at the same time. If you are used to more windows style keys, this would be similar to control and Windows keys. 2. Open the notes app. Everyone has this app and there is no special setup required. Start a new note by double-tapping the add button and then start typing away in the edit field. You can of course save your work when finished, or you can cancel it out. I hope these suggestions help. -- Raul A. Gallegos I don't think I could kill someone. Re: keyboard
That was a genius suggestion. The control key was the furthest out, and the other was the third in. When pressed with the letter k, i got the keyboard help I needed. I can now do about everyt hing from the keyboard except a double-tap. any idea on that? I had that calm radio on my computer and I paid way too much for a subscription for 2 years. well, it never worked for me on the PC; something about flash player; i got that upgraded but still cannot make it work. however, I could transfer the Calm radio full version to my i device because it's fully paid. There is a free version that is quite nice; but the full version is really super, for it has nature sounds that i do not think are in the free one; but I may be wrong about that. All that above to say this: I now have the iPod recording 75 minutes of dolphin sounds for a friend who would like a cd of dolphins. Yep, we can accommodate that. Another note: I am seeing names on this list that I have not seen in years. It's almost a class reunion or family reunion to see so many familiar handles. I imagine some of you feel the same as I. THank you. I could do this iPod without the keyboard, but with it, I may even get to be quite the whiz. Whoever suggested using the keyboard with the controlOptionK was right on. RE: Taking Navigon offroad?
It tells you distance and clockface. For example, I recently added the washington monument to my favorites this way, from my home in South Carolina. It told me 400 and something miles at 2 o'clock. Then as I was on the train, the distance shrank, and it was at 12 o'clock . When I got to Washington DC, I could navigate to it, keeping it at 12 as much as I could. A few months ago, I tried my way lite, and couldn't get it to work that well. When I got to a point, it told me the distance to the next point, but not the direction. I use ariadne for this kind of orientation. It also helped me out of a spot. I got on a city bus, but after getting on, the driver changed the route number and I started going to a different part of town than I was expecting to go. Using Ariadne, I knew where my house was, distance and clockface. So when I got as close as I could (1 mile) I got off and used it to get me home. If I had stayed on the bus to the transit station, then took the right bus, it would have taken me over an hour. I am anticipating the Breadcrumb app from LookTel. Netatmo update regarding additional indoor modules
Hello Netatmo users, I just wanted to send a brief update for those who bought a Netatmo Weater Station. If you read my last message you are aware of the fact that Netatmo is now offering additional indoor modules for $79. I received one of these which I put in my basement after pairing it with my station. The pairing process was easy, fully accessible and I am including a detailed step-by-step description at the end of the message since this will only be of interest for those who have a station and are planning to buy an extra module or modules. I would like to point out that for the next couple of weeks the additional module will not be of much use to a Voiceover user since the measurements it provides are not yet accessible with Voiceover. I just received a message from Netatmo's head developer, Carlos, and he said he will work on this and send me a Beta version to check out what he has done shortly. If my past experience is an indicator I would expect he will do this quite quickly and I will let everybody know, of course after I give him my feedback he still has to release an official update with those changes. Neil had asuggested that it would be good if the Weather Station could include pollen count and Carlos told me that this is something they will be looking at further on down the road. I believe this year they are busy with getting 2 more sensors released, a rain sensor and a wind speed sensor. Once these 2 add-ons are available the Netatmo Weather Station will be as good as just about anything that is out there but of course its other features like being able to check the readings from anywhere in the world via the app make it even better. OK, here now the description/instruction regarding the pairing process: Double tap on the Menu button at the top left, it becomes a Settings button, double tap on that. It will take a moment for the Settings menu to load since I believe it accesses information online. Now double tap on My Stations. Double tap on Add/Remove a Module On the screen that appears you will see a heading called Setup at the top and a Next button to the right, double tap on that. You now will find the following text: Please plug in the Netatmo Station's big module, double tap Next once again at the top right. Voiceover will now say : Touch and hold the top of the station for 10 seconds. After you do that, double tap Next If you explore the screen, Voiceover will read Your station is powering up, please wait. You should hear a tone, and you will find Please select an accessory. The choices are: Netatmo and Cancel, double tap on Netatmo. Now you find: Congratulations, you will now be able to add modules to your station or remove them. Double tap on Next at the top right again. On the next screen you have a heading called Modules at the top and a Done button to the right of that. If you swipe right or explore the screen further you find: Outdoor Modules Garden, button: that is of course what it says on my screen since I named my outdoor module Garden. Indoor Modules New Indoor Module, button: double tap on that. Now on the next screen it says: Please insert batteries in the module. If batteries were already inserted, please remove, wait 20 seconds and insert them. Find the Next button at the top right and double tap it (after you insert the batteries of course). It will now instruct you to Place the Module near your station, do that and once again double tap on Next. You will now find the following on the screen: Modules which is indicated by Voiceover as a heading. The following is all it says, of course it can take a moment until you get the message that it found the new module and for me it did say a couple of times that it couldn't find a module at first, but I think the person I asked as to how the batteries go in told me to put them in the wrong way and I had to experiment. The way I described above is definitely correct. In progress. The station is looking for the module. Congratulations, the station found a new module. New Module, that is a text field and can be edited in the normal way. I renamed my new module Basement and then double tapped on the Done button at the top right. Now I see the screen again with heading Modules and it lists my outdoor and indoor modules. Under Outdoor modules I have Garden as before. Under Indoor Modules I now have Basement, button and New Module where before all I had was New Module. There is another Done button at the top right, double tap it and you are back to the main Netatmo screen. RE: Questions about Downcast
When I refresh all my feeds to update, I just find it easiest to then go right into the downloads tab and then activate the pause button. My feeds will update with downloads ready for download and then I go down the list and delete the ones I’m not interested in downloading and then activate the pause button again which now says enable. Since I’ve got over sixty feeds, it sometimes takes a bit for everything to get updated so I just go do whatever else I want on the phone in the meantime. RE: Questions about Downcast
Hi Chasity, After you open Downcast, double tap on the Downloads tab (second from the right along the bottom) and there is a Pause Download Queue button at the top just after the Downloads heading. This will pause all downloads. Once you tab this the button will turn into Enable Download Queue. Once the downloads are Paused, double tap the Edit button at the top left of the Downloads screen. Now you have a delete switch to the left of each item/podcast episode in the queue, you can double tap on that and double tap again when it asks you to confirm. This way you can delete all episodes from the download queue. If you don't want certain Podcasts or any Podcasts to download automatically, you can either change your Global settings or individual Podcast settings to never download unless you tell it to. RE: iPhone Contacts alternative
Hello Xivan, I doubt you find anything that is more accessible than the contacts app on the iPhone and with a bit of practice I think you will find that it is super fast to find contacts. First of all, you can use SIRI to call people and for the most part it works very well. If you are somewhere you don't want to say who you are calling I think some of the other suggestions are worth your while to practice. As Joseph said, there is a search field at the top and if you type even 2 or 3 letters you often narrow the list enough to find who you are looking for quickly. What Chris says about using the Contacts tab in the Phone app makes no difference since it is the same as the actual Contacts app. Having said this, I rarely go into the Contacts app, it is actually inside my Utilities folder on my second home page since mostly when I need a contact I want to either call, email or text them and I can access the contact information from all of those apps. Another very efficient way to find people is to use the Table Index. Once you are in your list of Contacts, touch the very right of the screen. Voiceover will say Table Index, Adjustable. You can now either flick down with one finger on the screen to move to a particular letter of the alphabet, let's say for example, you want F, you just flick down 5 times and at that point you have all your contacts starting with F starting at the top of the screen. You can also do a double tap and old once you are on the Tavle Index, then drag your finger down the screen and you can super fast move to a letter towards the end of the alphabet. As with all gestures, this does take a bit of practice. If you do have an iPhone 4S or 5, you can also say Show Me followed by a name in your contacts list and SIRI will display the contact information. You can double tap on a phone number to call it, double tap on the email address to start an email etc. Good luck, Sieghard I find it much accesses the same From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of zkrisher Sent: Monday, July 08, 2013 3:53 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: iPhone Contacts alternative Hello, I've been using IOS with VoiceOver for about 3 years. Re: gps app
In my first need full use of BlindSquare last night, I had great difficulty. I knew my address was on the left-hand side of the street, where I was walking, but, BlindSquare kept reporting that my destination was at 2 o'clock or at 8 o'clock. I was standing still with the bottom of the phone pressed against my chest so that I know I was aiming the top of the phone straight down the street. Even when I was standing right in front of the place I wanted, it was giving me an address 10 220 off what I wanted in a few instances, I was getting no signal responses. Yes, I was near high rise buildings, but isn't that the case in most large cities. All in all, when I really needed BlindSquare help, I just did not find it to be adequate. Perhaps I need further instruction in how to use the app and what to expect from it. Eric On Jul 8, 2013, at 11:31 AM, Beverly reesesw...@gmail.com wrote: blind square. Hi Eric, This certainly does sound more like a GPS reception issue. I would also recommend not to press the phone right up against your body, the closer it is to a source of water which your body is the more this can distort your GPS signal. RE: external battery for the iPhone 4S
Hi Dan, Those 2 things are mutually exclusive, there are many batteries with 6000 MA and more, but you will not find a case with such capacity since it would be much to bulky. My guess is most cases will be 1800 or 2000 MA and less with many of them only in the 1000 to 1200 MA range which helps, but it is not enough to charge your battery if it is down to 20% or less. An iPhone has around 1430 to 1450 MA depending on the model so a battery must have more in order to provide one full charge. I have the MyCharge Peak 6000 which has 6000 MA and hence one would think that strictly based on the numbers it should charge my iPhone's battery 4 times completely, but in reality it is something like two and a half times. I assume if you were to turn the phone off and then charge it maybe it would charge it a bit more, but as the battery charges your phone your phone also is on and uses up battery power especially if you are using it. I think you find the most information if you simply look at battery cases for the iPhone 4S on Amazon and compare the capacity (the value for MA or Milliamps). gps in a vehicle?
My question echoes previous posts on this list. While in a moving vehicle, which gps app will tell you what streets you are crossing as you travel? I downloaded ariadne, it does not do this. It does do a good job for the road you are on, or turn onto, but does not give info on streets you cross. Apple maps on my Iphone 4s can plan a route, but that's about it. In my experiences none of the apps will do this. Seeing Eye app will announce streets when you're walking, but if you are over 15 mph it does not do it. I believe this is to cut down on continuous chatter. But, I have not used all the GPS apps, so there may be one that will. Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. RE: Netatmo update regarding additional indoor modules
Thanks, Sieghard. What is meant by Plug in the Netatmo Station's big module? Does this mean to USB connect the main station to the PC? This info is very helpful. Once I hear from you the data from the accessory module is read by VO, I'll be buying 2 modules. Thanks. Keith From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Monday, July 08, 2013 9:48 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: iApp Netatmo update regarding additional indoor modules Hello Netatmo users, I just wanted to send a brief update for those who bought a Netatmo Weater Station. There is another Done

Plantronics M50. This is a single ear- headset and it allows Voice over to work when you are on and off a call. It's very light and comfortable and I could wear this all day with no ear fatigue. The battery life is excellent, but the call quality in my opinion leaves much to be desired. However let me state that as yet, I haven't come across a Bluetooth headset which satisfies me in the phone call quality department. The thing which I don't like about this one is the volume can be a bit low if you are in a noisy environment. You have to sometimes jack your phone up to 100% as well as the headset. When you do this, the battery on both devices will drain more just so you know. Also, the call/answer button is located right on the main part of the headset body, on the outside of your ear. So, if you want to make an adjustment while on a call, you might accidentally press the button and hang up on the person. I mainly like this headset for listening to audio such as Voice Over telling me which street I'm on using Ariadne, or Blind Square's voice telling me information I need. I listen to audio books as well while on the bus. I don't wear a headset at all when crossing streets. Sometimes the voice call quality is so bad that I simply turn it off, and put the phone to my other ear when talking. From what I can tell, this one only comes in black. Samsung HM1700. Now this one is almost the same as the M50 I just described above, but with the following differences. It comes with a standard round plug for you ear, which fits me the best. If I use one of the 3 included replacements, then it doesn't fit me as well and I'm constantly adjusting it. Somehow the M50 has this right for my ear, but if your ear is shaped just differently enough, the M50 might not fit right or might cause fatigue, with this 1700 I have the choice of more than one ear plug, and so this might be good for people with this kind of concern. Now, again, if I use the default round one which doesn't stick out at all, it fits in my specific ear just fine with no fatigue, but I do have to adjust it more than the M50. What I like about this one more than the M50 is that the volume is louder. I don't have to have my phone on max volume in order to hear things at a comfortable level. Also, the call/answer button is located on the top edge, not the main body, of co urse, depending on which ear you put this in, it might be the bottom edge. In any case, if I'm on a phone call and need to adjust the things, chances that I will accidentally hang up on my call are less than with the M50 I think. The body of this one is slightly bigger than the M50, so it will be more noticeable, but that is ok with me. The call quality is sometimes good, sometimes not so good, but the same is true for the M50 I think. The Samsung HM1700 comes in different colors if you care about such things. Grey, red, blue, ETC. I got the Blue one because it matches my mood and the color and theme of my phone. Both of the headsets I mentioned above will charge with a micro usb plug. So, it's pretty standard here. Also, both have excellent talk time, and both are small and will easily fit in a small carrying pouch or pocket. Both can be warn on either ear, and both are usually under 30 dollars on Amazon. Re: gps in a vehicle?
Hi, blind square does a fairly good job at announcing intersections. However it will miss some due to the speed at which you travel in while riding in a vehicle. Hi Shaf, Yes, it's possible that the Seeing Eye server is down, since I'm also getting an unknown error. I had problems connecting back on the evening of the first day I registered the app, after using this during the day (some days ago), but everything sorted the next morning, and I haven't had connection problems until now. Re: gps app
Hey Sieghard, you just made me think of something else. I have my phone in the Helium charger case. I wonder if that could effect GPS reception. Re: Netatmo update regarding additional indoor modules
Siegard: Please please let me know when both adicional sensors are avable, I'm very interested in getting this whole weather station package. - Original Message - From: Sieghard Weitzel To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Monday, July 08, 2013 10:47 Subject: Netatmo update regarding additional indoor modules Hello Netatmo users, I just wanted to send a brief update for those who bought a Netatmo Weater Station. There is another Done button at the top right, double tap

How much do these apps cost for an IPhone 4s? What I would use one the most for is when I get mail out of our mail box. I used to have a scanner hooked to my computer and all I had to do was scan the letter, save it to my computer, and then I could have JAWS read it to me. I can't seem to do that with the new scanner I have, so if I could get something on my phone to do that, it would be absolutely awesome. Which one of these apps do you think would be best for what I need it for? Thanks, Donnie -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Hello from a new member in Saginaw Michigan
Hello folks. I'm Jerry mader. I'm in Saginaw Michigan. I'm new to the I Devices so i may have a lot of questions. I hope this was the right list to come to, because I have an IPod Touch Fourth Generation and i'm using 6.1.3 on my I device. I'm curious to know, Does VizWiz still work? I plan to use both Tap See and VizWiz together. There are times when you do need to ask a specific question and i figure why not have both around. And also the second question is, Can i using the Braille keyboard Braillest, input contracted grade two Braille? And can i make this my default keyboard so i can always have it pop up when ever a new edit field comes up? Thanks very much folks. Re: gps in a vehicle?
I have had decent results with this with blind square as previously mentioned. But when I do this, I increase the distance blind square is looking, plus turn off all announcements except streets. This cuts down on extra chatter, and allows blind square to keep up better. Re: external battery for the iPhone 4S
I got the juice pack helium for my iphone 5, they just released the juice pack plus for that phone with a 2100 MA battery too. You could also get an external battery pack, I think they have those as high as 1000 MA, but that would not protect the phone and would be an extra item to carry around. Also, most carriers require you to have a data plan these days. And, there are lots of things that can be done by having data on your device, it would be far too limited without it. It’s just to demonstrate that what’s not too expensive for some can be quite expensive in other cases. My request to Sendero is to have the GPS information stored on the iDevice. Earlier this year I canceled my data plan for my iPhone to save money. I pay $25 for three months of phone service. If I were to reaquire a data plan, my only reason for doing so would be to use the Seeing Eye app. For most of you, who already have a data plan, you would be spending just for the cost of the app, and your data plan can be used for other purposes. In my case, however, the app would cost me something like $700, because I’d have to purchase a 2 year contract from ATT, plus the cost of a minimum of a year for the app, and if I decide I don’t want the app after the first year, I’m stuck with an extra year of data that I probably wouldn’t have gotten in the first place. That’s my take on things. Again, I’m not complaining, I’m just throwing another thought on things. I probably won’t be purchasing the app for a while, but I probably will get it, as well as the 2 gig a month data plan. I can find other uses for the data besides GPS, so it will be worth it for me. Alan Lemly -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Sunday, July 07, 2013 12:20 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Managing your music manually in iTunes, was: Deleting items from music app Hi Alan, Apple has made it very easy to delete single songs, entire albums or the music from an entire artist from your device. All you have to do is open the Music app, select your view, e.g. Songs, Albums, Artist etc. then find what you want to delete and flick down or app with a single finger. Voiceover will say Delete, then double tap once anywhere and the item is gone. Apple has implemented the Action Rotor feature here just like in the Mail app, so when you flick up or down you change the rotor from Default to Delete and once delete is selected a single finger double tap will do the trick. After this the rotor automatically goes back to the default behavior which means if you double tap on another song, it would play that song or, if it's an artist or album, it would open it. Prevent iPod's, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically in Edit, Settings and the Device tab of iTunes Checking this or not has no effect on what is being synced. What this does is simply prevent any iDevice from starting a sync when it is connected to the computer which is the default behavior. There is another option when you have your iPhone or other iDevice connected, it is under the Summary tab (which is the default tab) and it is called Open iTunes when this Device is connected. If you deselect this, automatic syncing for that particular device will be disabled, but if you only have one iDevice then that is the same as if you select the option under Preferences, Device tab to prevent automatic syncing of all iDevices. Below is the official explanation from Apple along with the link: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH1764?viewlocale=en_US If you've set up automatic syncing, iTunes syncs your device by default whenever you connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your computer. If you don't want iTunes to sync your device without being prompted, you can change this setting. You can prevent unprompted syncing for any specific iPod, iPhone, or iPad; or for all iPod, iPhone, or iPad devices you connect to your computer. To prevent unprompted syncing for a specific iPod, iPhone, or iPad: 1. Connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your computer. 2. In iTunes, select your device (below Devices). 3. Click Summary, and then deselect Open iTunes when this Device is connected. To prevent unprompted syncing for all iPod, iPhone, and iPad devices: 1. In iTunes, choose iTunes Preferences. 2. Click Devices. 3. Select Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically. If this checkbox is selected, any connected iPod, iPhone, or iPad won't sync without being prompted. To sync your iPod, iPhone, or iPad when unprompted syncing is disabled, connect your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to your computer, and then choose File Sync Device Name in iTunes, or click your device (below Devices) and then click Sync. OK, back to a bit more info from myself: What is actually being synced will be determined by whether you check Sync entire music library or Sync Selected artists, playlists and genres which can be found after you connect your device, click on it in iTunes (or select it from the sidebar if you have it enabled) and check the Music button/tab. If you now tab through the selections you find these options. The Sync selected artists, playlists and genres also allows you to select alubums even though albums are not mentioned. For Shannon it sounds like the proper selection would be the second one. once that is checked, you can tab to where you get a treeview of your playlists, artists, genres and albums and you can now arrow through these lists and check anything you like. Assume you have 3 Dire Straits albums, Dire Straits, Love over Gold and Brothers in Arms, you could check Dire Straits in the artists treeview and it would then sync all 3 albums. If you only want Love over Gold and Brothers in Arms to sync, then make sure you uncheck Dire Straits in the artists treeview, tab to the album treeview and find those 2 albums and check them. This method to sync a selection
Re: LookTel money reader
Hi, The vibration feature was available in earlier versions of the LookTel money reader release (I think after 1.1 came out in July 2011), but isn't present in the latest version of the app with the expanded list of currencies. You had to have the mute switch on. I liked the fact that you could have your bills identified with tones, and kind of miss this feature, which gives more privacy. Still, I suppose it could be confusing if you had bills of different currencies, since this only told you the denomination. If you read the comments in the AppleVis app directory entry for this app, you'll find a recent entry from someone who states that he misses the vibration and tone options from the earlier versions of the app. HTH. BTW, I tried to send an email to myself with the first letter capitalized and it did not go through. Chuck (mobile) Pleez x cuze enny tie ping or spelin air ores. Moderator message about new users - Was Re: Help with keyboard shortcut.
Hello Donnie. You have the right address. However up until now you were moderated. All new users to the list are moderated by default. Once I see that the user is a real person who isn't posting off topic messages, I will remove the moderation flag. I got a little behind this weekend because of things in real life which I was doing. So, this unfortunately meant that messages which came in from around Friday and on until today were held in the moderation queue. Also, just so you know, replying to a message and changing the subject with something totally different is hijacking a thread and frowned by many people -- your friendly moderator included. -- Raul A. Case sensitivity and Email addresses [was Re: Help with keyboard shortcut.]
Email addresses are case sensitive, although the domain part is not, but most email providers ignore the case of an email address to avoid confusion. There's usually no reason for people to talk through their hat on the list. For example, a Google search quickly leads to http://email.about.com/od/emailbehindthescenes/f/email_case_sens.htm which authoritatively answers this question.
