Depending on which Bose system you have, you can get the adapter from Bose.
For example, I have the Bose Sound Dock 10 which is only sold in Bose stores.
It's their top of the line system made specially for the iPhone and other smart
phones. It does not come with Bluetooth. Instead it comes with a hand full of
adaptors and you drop your iPhone in the slot to connect. I don't like that
and my wife after 23 years of being married knows what I like or wouldn't like.
So she spent the extra hundred bucks to buy the Bluetooth adaptor. I don't
need to connect by sticking my phone in a dock. The sound cock 10 comes with a
wireless remote control and I like that for skipping through titles and such.

There are a couple of devices out there that will let you plug the adaptor
in the head phone jack and there is another peace that connects to an amp and
speakers but as I understand it, they aren't cheap at around a hundred bucks.
Bose also makes a couple of other systems that is cheaper then the 7 hundred
bucks the sound dock 10 costs. IMHO, it would be pretty hard to beat the sound
dock 10 though for sound. Not only bass, anybody can do that but for the
dynamic range which is what gives music that live sound.

  Hi Kay,

There have been several apps, but they don't usually last very long
because Apple does not allow developers to include this functionality. I did
grab one a couple of years ago before it was pulled from the app store and
it does work very well, but I checked a week or so ago when this came up and
it's no longer in the app store.

In any case, just wait a few more weeks, when iOS 7 comes out you can turn
Bluetooth on and off either via the new Control Center (instead of touching
the status bar and swiping down with 3 fingers to bring up notification
centre, you touch status bar and swipe up with 3 fingers). From what I heard
on the Today in iOS Podcast you can evben bring up the Control Centre from
the lock screen. The other method is to use SIRI, in iOS 7 you can tell SIRI
things like Turn Bluetooth off or Turn Airplane mode on or Turn WiFi
off etc.

It is currently assumed that Apple will have their event to announce the
new iPhone or iPhones on Tuesday, September 10 which would only be 3 weeks
from next Tuesday. Then the phones will be available to ship most likely on
Friday, September 13 or a week later on September 20. Typically iOS 7 will
be released at some point after the announcement and before the new phones
start shipping, in other words, probably 4 or 5 weeks from now at the
latest.

RE: Solara Game Play, Discussion, and Ideas

2013-08-18 Thread Tess
Forgive me if this has already been said, have been out of town and catching

You can rush the building of shops.
It costs ESPER however, and the longer it takes to build a shop, the more
esper it takes to rush it.
You are given the option when you build the shop.

Subject: Re: Solara Game Play, Discussion, and Ideas

Hi all,

I just sent the developer of Solara an email asking for a few
additional accessibility aids.

I asked for the below three items.

1. Filtering or sort options for the arena. I can get through the
list there, but it gets a little sore on my wrist to flick right 400
times to get through the entire list. I mention that it would be nice
to have the ability to filter out all recently defeated castles, and
an additional idea was to give the ability to sort by level of the
castle and such.

2. I mentioned it would be nice to get a message indicating how much
space you currently have available to build in. We can, as others
have noted, always just try to build from the largest shop downward,
eventually finding one that will fit in what space you have left. I
put this second request at a lower priority, since we have a work
around that isn't too bad.

3. I mentioned the idea of giving a list of already built, and
in-process, shops. This way we could find the shops we have already
built, or ones we are currently building. There has been times I
wished I could rush construction, but we don't get that option after
we click away from the build dialog. It would also give the potential
to let us destroy shops if desired. I told them that this doesn't
have to be a way to navigate the castle as it is, but a simple listing
of the shops currently in the castle.

If anyone else thinks these are good options, then I would suggest
sending your own messages to the developers on these, or to mention
ones you would like to see. I am seriously impressed with what the
developer has done so far, and am interested to see what else they may
put in place to make it an even better experience.

Re: how do I play Solara the game.

2013-08-18 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I'm sure what I'll say will be dismissed as coming from a game player
and dancing on your head, but I think it's one thing to express an
opinion about a game and how you choose to spend your time, but it's
another matter when that opinion extends to those who choose to spend
their free time playing a game. Just because it's your opinion doesn't
make it OK to tell those who play Solara that they're wasting their time
playing a stupid game. You can express your opinion about the game, and
decide whether it's worth your time or not, without insulting those who
choose to play the game.

Each person is free to choose how they spend their free time. I would
never pass judgment on someone who chooses to spend their time doing
something I don't choose to do myself. I haven't played any computer
games in years, and Solara is the only computer game I play at the
moment. One of the things I like about Solara is that I can play the
game with very little time at all. Most of the time I spend just double
tapping a few buttons to collect gold and train heroes while I'm waiting
for buildings to finish or heroes to train up in levels. I doubt that on
average I spend more than 10 or 20 minutes a day playing Solara. Of
course, there are days where I go adventuring and spend some time on
quests and in the arena, but that's when I have the time to do something
like that. I spend much more time reading, listening to music, watching
football and taking care of my plants than I do playing solara. I don't
watch much TV or very many movies. I don't think that blind people who
watch TV, see movies, follow baseball or play card or word games are
wasting their time doing something stupid.

Solara isn't for everyone, and I don't have any problem with people not
choosing to play it. I've enjoyed helping people with the game on this
and other lists. I've seen people help out with tips and advice and
share their experience, but I've never seen anyone push this game on
anyone who doesn't want to play it. IMHO, we should each choose how we
spend our free time and let others make their own decisions.

Well, I am giving up on Solara right now. As to the other stuff,
call me lonely or stupid which ever, Tom back in hospital, doing
worse now than the day he went in, supposedly just for a refill on
potassium. It is all pretty discouraging right now so I don't want
to mess with a game that loads of people see to be figuring out but
not me, the more I hear the less I seem to understand.

I had a twitter account as well as a face book account. When I
figured out that what face book was selling was me, I deleted that
account. Twitter is for people who have to much time on their
hands. I can understand texting has some honest uses though. For
example, I don't need to call my wife wile she's seeing patients
just to say how about picking up a gallon of milk on your way home
tonight. A text message does the job quite nicely. And you can
create those kinds of phrases in settings, General, Keyboard,
shortcuts. for example, when I type ILY, on the screen that turns
into I Love You. When I type WTWYBH, on the screen it gets changed
to what time will you be home. WFD turns to what's for dinner. OMW
turns into on my way. and SGTM turns into sounds good to me grin

The only problem with that is, you have to memorize all of those
or their useless!

Visus Visual Assist System Could Help Visually Impaired “See”

Ubergizmo

I am quite sure that many of us have already heard of this particularly
common phrase, “There’s an app for that.” Sure, that might be true and your
smartphone is a ringing endorsement (pun not intended) for such a saying,
but do bear in mind that not everyone is able to use the smartphone as
intended to, and visually impaired folks happen to fall under this
particular category. Innovators and entrepreneurs from Visus Technology
figured out that they need to do something about this situation, coming up
with a system which will be able to assist visually impaired and blind
people “see” things from a new perspective thanks to the use of wireless
technology.

Known as the Visus Visual Assist system, trials of it happened last month,
involving a bunch of middle-school aged students in a summer enrichment
program over at the world-renowned Carroll Center for the Blind. Each of
these students were equipped with a Samsung smartphone, where they were then
trained on using the Visus app, before being sent out to see just how
helpful this app is. The Visus Visual Assist system was developed in
collaboration with the Verizon Innovation Program, and hopefully, it will
hit the market pretty soon, letting blind and visually-impaired people
recognize faces, determine colors, and navigate their travel. Check out
feedback from the students and teachers in the video above, and be
encouraged. [Press Release]

solara questions now I am playing

2013-08-18 Thread Regina Alvarado
Really getting into Solara. First game I have ever liked of this form. On level
6. Since not used to these type of games, two questions.
1. At some point in the game are we able to use experience?
2. Can someone go through what they call stats after where you pick your
combatants? What do you do with the information?

RE: solara questions now I am playing

2013-08-18 Thread Tess
Experience is only used to obtain levels. The higher level you get, the more
experience you need to get to the next level.
As for stats on each of the characters you unlock and or obtain.
This is what you look at when you are going against other castles in the
arena or quests.
Example, some of the characters will say resistance and a number. Resistance
is to help you not get hurt as much when fighting other characters who are
mages or warlocks, or any spell casting character.
Characters with a high armor means that they will be able to take more of a
punishment when you are fighting characters that do melee or your basic
weapon stile combat.
These stats are very important to look at when fighting in the arena. As for
quests, you will eventually learn what kind of mob is a melee mob and what
mob is a casting mob.
If you get defeated in the quest area, some times there is a tip saying what
kind of damage the monsters your fighting does. These tips are not always
useful, but sometimes they are.
As for arena stile fighting, don't be afraid to enter the arena and try
fighting other people.
This is how I really got to learn how my characters to work. Different kinds
of combination of characters work differently depending on what group of
characters your fighting.
Yes, you will lose, and yes, eventually you will win.
This is how I can be ranked 10 in the arena, and defeat the ranked 1 through
5 players or any player in the arena I wish if they are not too far in
levels above me, that does take into affect.
But if you fight against players your own level, and you know what combo
works against melee or casters, you should almost win every time.
It just takes practice and more practice to learn.
At the moment I am level 25, but I usually can defeat players 1/2 levels
above me depending on how good I am at picking the right combo of characters
to match against the castle I am fighting.
Also, another tip I use for myself, not sure what others think, I don't
spend any gold on shops that only produce gold anymore, I bought 1 or 2 of
them, but I stopped buying just gold shops unless it is in a quest to do so.
If you look at the food shops, you will see they give gold plus food. Food
is what you need to have longer playing times in the game.
Now, myself I buy food shops that will tell me something like produce food
+25 every 5 min first, this tells me that I am going to get a bonus on
regaining food back faster if I buy this shop. If there are no more shops,
then I will focus on shops that have a larger bonus food. Something like
food +25, this tells me that if I buy this food, my current max food maybe
50, after buying this shop, it it will go up to 75.
In my own opinion, buying shops that is just going to give gold is silly
when if you buy shops that give food and gold, you will get more for your
buck.
Now, some shops require you to pay for esper, so, you have to be careful at
what kind of shops your buying if you don't want to spend esper.
You can increase how fast your shops are being built if you want to spend
the esper to do that.
Example, lets say you are in the quest area, and one of the quests says to
buy a shop. You have already clicked on the quest and have started building
that shop.
If you go back into that quest, there will be a view, this means you can see
how much time is left on that shop, if you flick left or right depending
where you are after clicking on view, you should see hasten or something
like that, click on that and flick right, it will ask you if you want to
hasten up the building, and it will tell you how much esper it takes.
You can never hasten up the shop building or castle extenction building with
gold.
Remember, buying esper is what helps keep the game maker in business and
making this game better for players.
I hope this helps a bit. Remember, this is my personal views, and this is
what has helped me keep going.
At level 25, I have well over 1k in food, and at the moment, I am regaining
food back at a very high rate, also, I have over a million in gold and that
is by not buying gold with cash or buying gold with esper. If I let my gold
regenerate, I am getting well over 100k each time.
Now, I also want to tell you that I myself have spent esper on shops, I also
have spent esper to get the best castle there is to buy. If you look at the
building area, and click on castle extension section, not shops for gold or
food, but the third tab, and then flick far right, you will see obsidian,
that is my castle design, I think it gives a large food and good
regeneration bonus.
But, this isn't necessary to do if you don't want to do, all the steps I
gave above will still work perfectly. It just helps me to regen food gold a
bit faster.
Once more, this is just my personal views, not everyone can spend money for
esper, so, I don't want you to think you need that to play the game, you
don't.
All the stuff I listed at the start of this rambling email will still work
if you wanted to try it.

I agree, food shops which increase your food capacity should be given
priority, and this is what I do. Once you've run out of food shops
though, or the ones that are left are too big to fit into your castle
then I look to see which gold shops I can build.

I'm looking forward to this next upgrade because I know there are some
shops I want to tare down so I can put some more lucrative shops in
their place.

Re: Onenote Versus Evernote

2013-08-18 Thread Keith Bundy
Thanks much, Sieghard. I downloaded those scripts, and they are, indeed,
excellent!

Now here is the issue with which I am dealing. OneNote on my computer stores
things on our exchange server at the university where I work. OneNote on the
iPhone stores things in my sky drive account or the cloud.

Does anyone know how I might be able to get OneNote on the iPhone to store
things on my exchange server? I do like a lot of the features this application
offers, and would like to be able to interface home and work a little more
easily.

Also, I noticed that while the notes app on the phone will store things in the
cloud, my notes app on the computer serves things on the exchange server. I
really would like to know the various options available so that I can store
things I do on my phone on our exchange server. Perhaps I don't have many
options, but I would like to know what the options I do have might be.

wrote to Evernote to ask about accessibility. I received an answer that they
currently have no plans to implement specific accessibility improvements.

OneNote from the little bit of checking I have done is fairly accessible on
the iOS side and John Martin wrote a fantastic script for Jaws which makes
OneNote very accessible on the Windows side. The script can be found at
www.OneNoteblind.com and it costs $50. I did buy it and while I haven't
started using OneNote as much yet as I might want to some day, the scripts
definitely work and John has a nice Podcast about the scripts and also gives
a godo overview on the last episode of the Freedom Scientific FS Cast with

Status report doesn't fetch facebook updates

2013-08-18 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hello,

I'm using status report to check my facebook feed, as it's very comfortable
to use and shows much more postings than the regular facebook app or
website. However, every few months, it doesn't fetch any uptades at all.
Instead, the app closes, and you can only read the time and date of the
presumable last refresh. I told the developers about this issue which they
weren't aware of before, and they said they'd take care of it - somehow.
Today, I was confronted with the same issue, so I uninstalled the app,
re-installed it and logged into facebook. But nothing works. Also tried to
turn off the phone which sometimes helped, but no success. I'm using an
iPhone 4S running iOS 6.1.3 and the latest version of status report. Do you
know how to make the app work again? Or can you recommend an alternative?
I've never seen an app that works so well but at some point always refuses
to do the job and has to be re-installed regularly.

Best wishes,

Alexandra

RE: turning on VO on new iPad

2013-08-18 Thread Michael Malver
If it is an absolutely new iPad, triple clicking the home button won't work.
You need a sighted person to set the language and country in the setup
screen which only activates when you turn on an iPad for the first time..
Once that is done, triple click works fine.

Hi.

I have also bought that battery. I really like it. Especially because I can

I agree that it would have been nice if we could see the status of the

 mah-battery-pack-lot-power-money

 Introduction
The Limeade line of products come in many different sizes to suit your
needs. They have a few packs, ranging in size from the $25 5000 MAH
battery pack to the $99 18 MAH battery pack. You can look at all the
different models to compare for yourself by searching Amazon for
Limeade. This specific review only covers the 18 MAH version. The
higher the number, the more it costs, but also the larger the device
and more juice you get to power your devices.
 Description
The 18000 MAH version of this pack measures 4.9 x 3.1 x 0.9 inches and
weighs 13 ounces. TO give an idea of how that compares to other
devices, it's about as long as my iPhone 5, is slightly wider than the
iPhone 5, and is about 2 times as thick. There is only 1 button on the
device, which can be found on the side of the battery pack. It is
located closest to the micro USB port. When you orient the button so
that it is on the left side and is closest to you, all other functions
are on the front of the pack. The button you never need to use, as the
device auto turns on and off when something is connected and
disconnected from it. Pressing the power button once will cause the
LED to briefly flash to indicate the amount of power the pack has
remaining. Pressing it twice rather quickly will turn on the
flashlight. Pressing it again twice will turn this off. . As indicated
previously, the micro USB port is located on the left front of the
unit. next to that, you'll find the LED light, which doubles as a
flashlight and battery power indicator. To the right of that, you will
find 2 USB ports which, yes, will allow you to charge 2 devices at the
same time. Next to the LED light is a 1 AMP USB port, which works fine
for iPhones and other accessories with smaller batteries, and to the
right of that is a 2.1 amp USB port. This is most suitable for
charging tablets and other accessories that have larger batteries. You
can charge iPhones and other acessories with either port, but you must
charge tablets with the 2.1 amp port. I didn't notice much of a
difference in speed when charging my iPhone 5 with the 2.1 amp port
 versus the 1 amp.
 What's in the box.
In the box is the battery pack itself, along with a USB cable which
has a standard USB connector to plug in to the pack, and then the
other end doubles as a micro USB connector or 30-pin Apple connector,
which Apple used up until last year for all of its devices. You simply
move the 30-pin connector out of the way when you wish to use the
 Micro USB cord.
 Operation and impressions
One of the biggest concerns I had with this pack was the flashlight
feature. The button seems hard to bump, and would take 2 fairly quick
bumps to activate, so this doesn't really bother me as I thought it
would. The lack of an accessible way for me to check the power
available kind of stinks, but it pretty much comes with the territory,
unless you want to shell out the same amount of money for a battery
pack which talks, but only has 1/3 of the capacity. I have charged my
iPhone with this device 4 times, this includes the case with the

side of the screen. Tap accessibility and tap the on / off button next to voice
over. You will hear the iPad say voice over on . A
Now you can use the iPad. In the voice over area, there is some information
about the gestures that you will need to know to be able to use voice over. I
highly suggest that you spend some time learning these gestures.
Once you are familiar with the iPad, you will want to go back into settings,
general, accessibility, voice over, and go to the bottom and select toggle
voice over in the triple click home option. This will allow you to turn voice
over on and off, if needed.

RE: OneNote Versus Evernote

2013-08-18 Thread Geoff Stephens
Keith -
We can't help you with your employer's policy with regard to personal
devices. If you are allowed to connect to the Exchange Server, they will
have to let you know that. Maybe someone can tell you definitively whether
OneNote for iOS will connect to an Exchange Server, if that's what you are
asking.

I am afraid this is a perfect example of how accessibility has been turned
inside out. I can buy an entire Microsoft Office suite for less than I
would have to pay for scripts to make a small part of that suite accessible.
I have long been hoping Evernote would become more accessible for the PC or
that Freedom Scientific would see fit to support a major part of Microsoft
Office in OneNote. Neither have happened.

It is rather disconcerting to think that two of the major notes applications
are not accessible on all platforms when one of the most important functions
for blind people is to have the ability to use electronic note taking
methods.

At the time John sought input for what scripts to consider for his next
project from an e-mail list, I doubt if anyone envisioned that he would
create $50 scripts for OneNote with the flimsy excuse that his offering was
geared toward universities or whatever the justification was that he used.
I can afford $50, but I'm certainly not going to waste it on scripts for
OneNote. I can also afford $10, and probably would do so, if that were the
price. I don't think these scripts will sell very well.

I wish I had the time to just create JAWS scripts for OneNote myself.

Since I am committed to Microsoft Office, I'm sort of wishing OneNote could
be my answer for notes. It's certainly nice to know that the iOS version of
OneNote is somewhat accessible. I haven't tried it because the PC version
is useless with JAWS. Has anyone tried the PC version with NVDA?

Hopefully things will improve.

I'm sorry I had to include a discussion of an off-topic screen reader here
but I believe it is relevant. There are many of us who use iPhones and PCs.
It is exceedingly frustrating that the mainstream notes apps are not
accessible on all platforms.

I have conducted a considerable amount of research into note taking
applications. There are a lot of them out there. Some of them are loaded
with functions that really make the process of taking notes much more
efficient than using a standard text editor or word processing app. But
many are inaccessible, platform dependent, or not viable for screen reader
users for some other reason.

If anyone knows of an accessible full featured note taking app that is
equivalent to OneNote or Evernote, and accessible on both the PC and iOS
platforms, please let me know.

Hello Alexandra,

Unfortunately, the Status Report app is no longer around. They have removed
this app from the store and are no longer available for anyone to download.
So over time I would assume that this app would eventually decease to work.

So sadly I don't have any easy fix to your problem. As Facebook continue to
change things I'd only imagine at some point it would stop working because
of the changes they have done and this app will no longer receive any
updates to resolve those problems.

Hopefully, I can only hope somebody on this list might have a solution that
could extend the life of the app. It was also one of my favorite app to use.

Alexandra

Profile pics with Facebook app

Hi there,

I have a picture I'd like to post to Facebook via my IPhone. I would like
for that to be my Profile picture as well. How can I go about doing that
easily?

I know that via email, I can go to the attachment and post it to Facebook
from there. I just don't know how to tell it to become my profile picture.
It is also on my camera pictures, so I can send it that way as well.

Thanks for your help.

Great Blind Square feature

2013-08-18 Thread Tom Frank
My apologies if this has been covered.

After the latest update, I added all of my contacts to be searched by
BlindSquare. When I did a search for a local restaurant that began with will,
it found the Willoughvale and two contacts with the last name of Willard. So
far, so good.

Then I double tapped on Willoughvale Inn and it brought up
call, menu and several other buttons. , but the last button was simulate
this location. I double tapped and it took me to the Willoughvale, virtually,
that is, and told me all of the POIs in the area. Then I went to the tools
button, and selected Look around. I could then aim my phone and simulate
being at the restaurant. This is a great feature if you want to check out an
area before arriving.

By the way, the Willoughvale is in Westmore, Vermont next to Willoughby Lake,
My wife and I had an excellent 6th anniversary dinner.

RE: Status report doesn't fetch Facebook updates

2013-08-18 Thread AnonyMouse
Well, second thought. It looks like I just may have given you bad
information.

Not sure why I had thought they have vanished. That isn't the case at all.

As you can see they are still there at:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/status-report/id474219737?mt=8

However, they haven't been updated since January. So giving that some
thoughts. I would definetly contact them and see what's up?

Sorry about that. My bad.

Bummer, I had no idea that it had been pulled. Any idea why? I had my
troubles with it and twitter a while back, but the devs fixed it and even
address the link text not being read by Voiceover when I wrote them about
it. Facebook still doesn't even do this.

Oh well.

Regards,
AnonyMouse

Subject: Status report doesn't fetch facebook updates

Alexandra

Re: turning on VO on new iPad

2013-08-18 Thread Garth Humphreys
I am not sure why you have had this experience. I have setup numerous iPads and
iPhones straight out of the box with the triple click of the home button. You
do not need sighted assistance to do this. This will also work on an old iphone
that has been reset to factory defaults and upon which Voice Over has not
previously been setup.
1. Press the power button and hold for a second or two.
2. Allow 30 seconds or so for the device to boot up fully.
3. Press the home button once to wake the screen just in case you've
waited too long for the boot up.
4. Triple click the home button and Voice Over will start up.

The above instructions are for a brand new device or one which has been reset
to factory defaults. You will notice a section on the screen which Voice Over
will read out in different languages each time you swipe on and off it. This is
where you now need to do a double tap in order to start the initial
configuration of the device.

In the below podcast I show the unboxing and initial setup of the iPad mini

Supposedly, Triple clicking the Home button will turn it on with new units.

If it is an absolutely new iPad, triple clicking the home button won't
work. You need a sighted person to set the language and country in the
setup screen which only activates when you turn on an iPad for the first
time.. Once that is done, triple click works fine.

Thanks for any info and help in setting up a new iPad.

syncing sports audio feeds with TV broadcast

2013-08-18 Thread Cristóbal
Hello list,

I was wondering if what I was looking for is already out there in some way
shape or form. Be it through an iOS app for tablet, phone or Apple TV. That
or some other type of set up with a third party device in conjunction with
any of the i-devices.

I’m looking for a means to have the audio from a sporting event like
football, baseball, basketball, etc. synchronized with the broadcast on
television. I am aware that there are apps that allow one to listen to all
the local radio folks from various teams already. I in fact have the At bat
and Pro Football radio apps and others on my phone for example, but what I
want is to be able to have that radio stream thrown to the television and
stay synced in real time.

I personally don’t care for the TV broadcasts and am always inclined to the
radio option, but on occasions where I may have sighted guests over or be
invited to a get together for a game, I would like to have this option.
Especially since games tend to be paused or rewound and fast forwarded all
the time in these types of settings. So it’s not just as simple as launching
the stream be it from an app or even from a laptop and getting them more or
less at the same time and never altering the TV broadcast in real time.

I have come across some solutions, but they seem to be geared more towards
getting an actual radio and television to play nice. Not really an answer
when a game you want to watch is an out of market one. That, and again, the
pause/fast forward/rewind variable too.

Anyway, I figured that as popular as the At Bat app is as an example, some
folks are already doing this since lots of people have an affinity for their
team’s radio guys over the TV ones or a network broadcast be it sighted or
blind.

If anyone knows how this could be done with any of the i-devices or Apple TV
or again, something else entirely, I would appreciate any enlightenment. If
the solution is in fact an non iOS one, then I’d appreciate an off list
message as well.

Thanks,

Cristobal
