Hi
yes, VoiceOver should start after triple clicking the home button, it
did on mine anyway, but don't panic if it doesn't, you can still do it
the iTunes way.

Sorry for such a basic question, but I wanted to be sure I knew what I was

I have to say, my netbook is going south, and it is because of the discussions

Re: Stereo Headset

2014-01-17 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Unfortunately, they do not work well with VoiceOver. VoiceOver plays fine
through them if there is something else playing, but VoiceOver, by itself,
stutters, is delayed, and sound almost as if there is a loose connection
somewhere, even though there isn't really. It is unfortunate that VoiceOver
does not work well with them, they sound better than the HBS700's, with
which VoiceOver works fine.

I have another question on a related topic. Does anyone have any experience
with the LG HBS730 Tone+ stereo blue tooth headset? It's available from
Amazon for about $45 and a client just told me about it today. It is A2DP
compliant, so should work with VoiceOver and play content from
Audible.com,
Bard mobile app, and VoiceDream. It comes with a sort of three-quarters of
a

circle collar that has the controls and rests on your neck. The earpieces
are ear buds that stick directly in your ear, are connected to the collar
by

short wires because they don't have to reach very far, and attach
magnetically back to the collar when you're done with them in your ears.

I'm curious if anyone has tried them yet, and whatever feedback you might
be

willing to offer. Or, has anyone tried other LG blue tooth products?

Thanks,
Jeffrey

Hi Guys and Gals,
I bought a small Bluetooth speaker from Walmart that you could clip on
your
collar. It was only $19.00. It is about two inches round and is only
about
3/4 inch thick. It is made by Phillips. They came in black, red and
white.

It has a little thing on the side you could clip on a clip. It also has
buttons on it for answering the iPhone and talking through it. I use it
all

the time with my iPad.

Bluetooth would be great. There are the flips headphones that you can lay

sure of the quality either.

Re: Braille and Voice dream

2014-01-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
Bard app has a specialized set of keystrokes for using Braille. I highly
recommend that you check them out in the help section, which can be found on
the bookshelf tab. To continue where you leave off in a Braille book, turn
contractions off with dots 1-2-4-5-space, then use the letter r. To search for
a keyword, use the letter s. To change the navigation increments, use M. To go
directly to the navigation area, use N. you should keep contractions off when
in a Braille book, because the Braille book has already been translated, so you
don’t have to translate it again.

weird issue voice dream and mp3 files

2014-01-17 Thread Pablo Morales
Hi all.
Ok, I have done the zipping and uploading books, audio books to voice dream.
The procedure that I have done is select with add button on iTunes the zip file
where are the mp3 of my audio book, and add this file. Later been in voice
dream, I go to add, select iTunes, select the file to load, and press double
tabl on load. Voice dream says upload successful.
I have done it with several audio books, but in the list of books on voice
dream, some books says 0 min, 0 seconds. When other books has time. If I play
one of the books that has a time, the audio book plays fine, but in the book
that says 0 hours, 0 minutes, voice dream says, empty.
Why some are empty?

Most of the program works, but you need a splitter to enable use of the

It should say when you first turn it on something like, talk time 7 hours.
Phone 1 connected. IIf it isn't saying anything, it only means the
sensors need to be reset. The way I do it is I have the charger with it's
USB cable plugged in in my bathroom because there is an outlet on the wall
right near hand. With the ear peace turned off, connect it to the
recharger for a few seconds like maybe 10. Unplug it from the charger and
place the ledgend on your ear and turn it on. It should now say Talk time
7 hours. Phone one connected.

You can also get the status by tapping once quickly on the siri button.
This is the button on the very back of the mike boom. It should announce
the remaining talk time and connection status as phone 1 connected. If
you have a second iPhone say for example for a business, when that's
connected you will hear phone 1 connected. Phone 2 connected.

HTH!

Hi all,

I treated myself to the Voyager Legend Ear-piece which was delivered this
morning. and as usual, things aren't going smoothly for me!smile.

Would anyone be prepared to assist me in getting the ear-piece working as
it should?.

It is paired with my phone fine. but doesn't seem to understand voice
commands such as, asking it to call a contact, rejecting a call, etc.

Is this possible on such a device, or is it something I'm doing wrong?

Re: Facebook Messaging App

2014-01-17 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello Kay, in all fairness, Fred did answer the question, but it's the
extra comments he added which weren't really called for. It would have
saved many useless messages on the list. We don't need cheer leader
messages and we don't need opposition messages, and we don't need
opposition to the cheer leader and opposition messages to be sent. All
that does is cause the moderators like me to send still yet more useless
messages like this one to you and Fred to remind you and he and whomever
else on how to act on list even though you guys already know how. In the
end, all which gets accomplished is that a single person's well-meaning
question was turned into a heated debate which in the end didn't answer
the original question.

Hmm, it seems if he were to go do his own research on applevis, he would be
getting opinions of others. Sooo, the results would be the same. With one
BIG difference, by posting his question here he's able to ask each person
specific questions. So I say ask questions til you are satified with the
replies. And if necessary then go check out applevis, those doing podcasts
or leaving reviews may not see your message.

Netflix can be a little flakey to deal with. The only way I can get the
sign-out to work is as follows. When I'm in netflix I have to double-tap and
hold on the screen with 1 finger. When VO makes the sound I scroll upwards. I
have to do this several times until the sign-out button is on the screen. I
can then double-tap the button and it will ask me if I'm sure I want to
sign-out. I double-tap yes and I'm done. The point I am trying to make is you
can't just flick to the sign-out button. It will not work that way. There are
a lot of places in Netflix that you also can't just flick to. I really hope
this helps. It actually sounds more complicated than it is. You will get used

Re: What bluetooth keyboard to buy?

2014-01-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The Verbatim keyboard folds, and it has an on/off switch which is on the
inside once folded, so there's no way it could accidentally be switched
on. The folding makes it a bit smaller when transporting, while still
using pretty large keys. The fold in the middle though causes some keys
to be slightly out of place requiring some getting used to. The latch
that holds the keyboard flat is also a point of failure. I'd recommend
it in the right situations, but if you want to be using it on your lap a
lot, I think you have better options.

Re: How do you sign out of netflix when using voice over

2014-01-17 Thread Christopher Chaltain
The problem is that the sign out button is at the top, and your screen
view is down a bit. You need to scroll the screen view back to the top
so the sign out button is in the view. If you want to get the view back
up to where the sign out button is, double tap and hold at the bottom of
the screen and when you hear the tone, slide your finger up the length
of the screen. After this, explore around on the screen to see if you
can now find the sign out button. If not, do this a few times until you
can find the button. Once you can find it, you can activate it by double
tapping anywhere on the screen. You just have to get it on the screen
first and then it'll work like any other button. Pretty tedious, I know!

Re: What bluetooth keyboard to buy?

2014-01-17 Thread Craig Werner
I second the recommendation of the Logitech Easy-switch K811 keyboard.
The on/off switch is on the right-hand edge of the keyboard and
requires some effort to activate. In addition, the action of the
keyboard is very uniform and smooth; in fact, it's one of the best
keyboards I have ever typed on.  The keyboard is a true Mac keyboard;
that is, all the keys are in the right place. I got mine a few days
ago at the price of $79, but Amazon has increased the price to about
$84 since then, at least in the U.S.

One point worth mentioning in view of traveling with the keyboard: the
battery is built-in and rechargeable; so the user should make sure it
is fully charged before traveling or have a source of USB power to
hand. Using the default backlight setting, Logitech says the battery

Fantastical 2 question on item counts and how to clear them

2014-01-17 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. For those that use Fantastical 2, I've recently noticed
something that puzzles me. Sometimes when I launch it from my home
screen or switch to it with the app switcher, I'm told, Fantastical
2, 2 items. What does that mean, and how can I clear the items? I've
tried switching to the app to clear the items, like when you have 2
missed calls and can just go to the recent tab in the phone and clear
the item counts. Is Fantastical 2 the same way? Also, exactly what do
these item counts mean, are they incomplete reminders or something
else? I am using the latest Fantastical 2 on an iPhone 5 running iOS
7.0.4.

Sincerely
Wayne Merritt

Hi All,
I decided to take the plunge and buy an iPad Mini.

It arrived today.

I have never set up an I device myself.

So, should Voice Over start with the triple home button click if I turn it
on?

Otherwise it will be a couple of days before I could get sighted assistance.

Sorry for such a basic question, but I wanted to be sure I knew what I was
doing.

I have to say, my netbook is going south, and it is because of the
discussions on this list that prompted me to go for the iPad Mini.

Thanks.

NEW VERSION OF MATH MELODIES

2014-01-17 Thread Cristian Bernareggi
Dear friends of VIPhone,

At EveryWare Technologies we are very pleased to announce that at we have
released the first complete version of Math Melodies, a novel app for iPad
that helps visually impaired children to learn mathematics!

The app is now downloadable for free from the App Store at the following
link: https://itunes.apple.com/en/app/math-melodies/id713705958?mt=8; at
the moment is available both in Italian and English language, but we are
also working on a German version.

Math Melodies is designed to overcome some of the challenges that blind and
sight impaired children have to face in learning mathematics since primary
school.

We want to make mathematics learning more engaging and entertaining and
that's why we have conducted some evaluations with children, receiving
enthusiastic feedbacks so far.

Math Melodies is aimed both at blind and visually impaired students: the
audio feedback assists the child in practicing arithmetic exercises while
sliding the finger over the tablet.

This first release is designed for children from the first to the third
grade of primary school, and includes 6 chapters of a tale comprehensive of
music and sounds, with 12 different type of exercises (each with a
different level of complexity).

We would like to invite all the people from VIPhone to try the application
and to let it try to children between 5 and 8 years of age. If you want to
let a visually impaired child try the application, you can first read the
“for the grown-ups” section where it is explained how to do it.

Thanks to all and if you have any question please write us at
accessibil...@ew-tech.it!

Any comment or feedback is very important to us.

 keyboards I have ever typed on.  The keyboard is a true Mac keyboard;
that is, all the keys are in the right place. I got mine a few days
ago at the price of $79, but Amazon has increased the price to about
$84 since then, at least in the U.S.

One point worth mentioning in view of traveling with the keyboard: the
battery is built-in and rechargeable; so the user should make sure it
is fully charged before traveling or have a source of USB power to
hand. Using the default backlight setting, Logitech says the battery
will last ten days if the user types an average of two hours per day.
With the backlight disabled, Logitech says the battery might last up
to one year before it has to be charged.

I would like to avoid manually entering the same list of contacts on

Subject: dumb, but want to be sure

 Hi All,
I decided to take the plunge and buy an iPad Mini.

 It arrived today.

I have never set up an I device myself.

So, should Voice Over start with the triple home button click if I turn it on?

Otherwise it will be a couple of days before I could get sighted assistance.

Sorry for such a basic question, but I wanted to be sure I knew what I was
 doing.

I have to say, my netbook is going south, and it is because of the
discussions on this list that prompted me to go for the iPad Mini.

 Thanks.

happened? No tiles are locked, so what is it trying to move things for? Why
would making the word fail since all four are touching?

On a side note, what visually denotes a locked tile? I am trying to show my

locked and is also not sure why some tiles are darker colors than others.

Thanks so much for the kind words! A letter starts of as a player 1 or

2's turn 5 player 2 letters come down. I hope that clarifies.

Thanks so much for making this app accessible and taking the time to explain
and show us how to play. I love word games but accessible games that we can

 hanging with friends.

Re: Syncing contacts on 3 iDevices

2014-01-17 Thread Alex Hall
The apps don't matter. Just turn on contacts in iCloud settings on all three
and they should sync up. If you want only certain contacts on each phone, that
is another matter, but if you want all of them on all the phones, iCloud should
handle that with no problem.

App Turns Smartphone Into Virtual Cane for the Blind

 MIT Technology Review
 January 8, 2014

A smartphone app inspired by Greek mythology has the potential to help the
blind navigate indoors where GPS is unavailable.

It's easy to imagine that being blind or visually impaired more or less
excludes people from using smartphones or tablets. But nothing could be
further from the truth. App stores have a dizzying variety of products that
help the visually impaired access all kinds of information much more easily
 than would otherwise be possible.

These apps offer audio books, match clothes by colour and even offer games
played by hearing and touch alone. But the apps designed to give directions
all suffer from the same drawbacks-audio directions are helpful but also
screen out other audio such as conversations or the sound of traffic nearby.
What's more, GPS does not work indoors so these kinds of systems are of
little use in homes and other buildings

Now Pierluigi Gallo and buddies at the University of Palermo in Italy have
come up with an alternative which offers the blind navigational help without
any form of audio distraction or the need for GPS.

The approach is surprisingly simple and inspired by the famous Greek myth of
Ariadne and Theseus. In the story, Theseus volunteers to kill the Minotaur
which lives in a labyrinth on the island of Crete. To help him, Ariadne
gives him a sword to kill the beast and a ball of thread to help him find
his way out when the deed is done.

Gallo and co take a similar approach with their prototype smartphone app
called Arianna, the Italian name for Ariadne. (It's also short for pAth
Recognition for Indoor Assisted NavigatioN with Augmented perception.) Their
idea is to map out a route through a building by sticking coloured tape on
 the ground.

The user then switches on the smartphone camera and points it towards the
ground, while placing a finger on the screen. He or she then waves the
camera back and forth, scanning the ground for the line.

In the meantime, the app analyses the frames produced by the camera, picking
out the line as it moves across the screen. When the line passes under the
user's finger on the screen, the app causes the smartphone to vibrate,
providing a tactile indication of where the line falls.

Scanning the smartphone back and forth allows the user to follow the line in
the same way as he or she might use a cane (see diagram above). At the same
time, QR codes placed on the ground can give the user other information such
as the location of places such as toilets, water coolers, shops and so on.

Gallo and co say they tested their virtual cane in December at workshop in
Boston organised by the Andrea Bocelli Foundation and say it works well.

And they plan significant upgrades in future. One idea is to use infrared
 lines that

Re: Fantastical 2 question on item counts and how to clear them

2014-01-17 Thread Jeff Samco
I suspect you are hearing a badge announcing the number of reminders
that are unmarked as completed. If so, you'll find that each reminder
has 2 instances of being announced by VoiceOver. The second one has a
checkbox. Single finger double tap on it and that will show that
reminder as complete.

tried switching to the app to clear the items, like when you have 2
missed calls and can just go to the recent tab in the phone and clear
the item counts. Is Fantastical 2 the same way? Also, exactly what do
these item counts mean, are they incomplete reminders or something
else? I am using the latest Fantastical 2 on an iPhone 5 running iOS

2014-01-17 Thread Alan Paganelli
Actually I remembered that your apps get backed up to your computer in
iTunes so I went and looked. It's called GeoReader. My problem with it is,
because it's self voicing, it enterfears with voice over wanting to read the
same thing. They may have updated the app sense I used it and in the app is
one of those contact us things. I did report the problem to them and said
that althoug the app is inteded for sighted users it can also be useful for
blind users because you can create your own points of interest and have a
description attached to it. A point of interest that says turn right here
can be useful when you might be walking through a park to locate your picnic
table again etc.h

Re: Stereo Headset

2014-01-17 Thread Alan Paganelli
And the Trekker Breeze is not Bluetooth equipped either. I've asked
Humanware to come up with a Trekker app for iPhone. They have said in the
past that they had no plans to do so. On the other hand, when they see what
the Seeing Eye GPS app wants for a month, maybe they'll change their minds.
To me however, I wouldn't pay a hundred and twenty dollars a year for it but
that's me and I have 3 GPS units for the blind plus a free GPS app on my
phone as a backup.

Bluetooth would be great. There are the flips headphones that you can lay
on

your shoulders and use as speakers, but they were very expensive. I'm not
sure of the quality either.

Re: dumb, but want to be sure

2014-01-17 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi there. All of the new iPad that I have seen and help customers set up in the
last year have always worked with pressing the home button three times. Voice
over will turn on and you can continue with the set up. If the voice over for
whatever reason doesn't come on with pressing home button three times, you can
enable it using iTunes from a Mac or a PC. Under normal circumstances you can
use Siri to turn voiceover on, however initially with an iPad there is no
Internet access and so therefore Siri will not work.

Hope this helps.

as for trying to log in, the only thing you can do is to keep trying. I get

Thanks for now, love this game, my username is Rich if anyone wants a game.

App stores have a dizzying variety of products
 that
help the visually impaired access all kinds of information much more easily
 than would otherwise be possible.

These apps offer audio books, match clothes by colour and even offer games
played by hearing and touch alone. But the apps designed to give directions
all suffer from the same drawbacks-audio directions are helpful but also
screen out other audio such as conversations or the sound of traffic
 nearby.
What's more, GPS does not work indoors so these kinds of systems are of
little use in homes and other buildings

Now Pierluigi Gallo and buddies at the University of Palermo in Italy have
come up with an alternative which offers the blind navigational help
 without
any form of audio distraction or the need for GPS.

The approach is surprisingly simple and inspired by the famous Greek myth
 of
Ariadne and Theseus. In the story, Theseus volunteers to kill the Minotaur

Mail: iPad Mini, what happened?

2014-01-17 Thread Crystal French
Hi All,
Okay, yes, Voice Over came on with the triple home click, and I got my new iPad
Mini set up.
More, or less.
What has happened with POP3 mail?
Have I not been paying attention?
I went to setup mail on the iPad Mini.
I have Clearwire, which is Google.
I’ve always had POP3 as my in the settings of my email program.
It only seems to be IMAP.
Is that the only choice?
Also, I keep hearing, “Double tap to dismiss the side bar.”
When I double tap, it does move to another screen, but when I go back, it is
the same thing.
If anyone has done a podcast on the mail program, please let me know.
I should say, it does set up the account, and it works, but I’m confused.
Thanks,
Crystal

Hi
no, pop3 is still available but you must choose other account so you can
set it up kind of manually.

 Thanks,
 Crystal

Since you're using Gmail, you can just turn on Contacts in the Gmail
account of your Mail, Calendar, Contacts settings. You can also make
this your default Contacts list.

Re: weird issue voice dream and mp3 files

If you have Dropbox or Google Drive, I would use them instead. iTunes tends to
screw things up too easily.

Voice Dream only supports mp3 files.
That would explain the zero time on some books if the files are not a type
 voice dream recognizes.

 Hi all.
Ok, I have done the zipping and uploading books, audio books to voice dream.
The procedure that I have done is select with add button on iTunes the zip
file where are the mp3 of my audio book, and add this file. Later been in
voice dream, I go to add, select iTunes, select the file to load, and press
double tabl on load. Voice dream says upload successful.
I have done it with several audio books, but in the list of books on voice
dream, some books says 0 min, 0 seconds. When other books has time. If I
play one of the books that has a time, the audio book plays fine, but in the
book that says 0 hours, 0 minutes, voice dream says, empty.
 Why some are empty?
