Hey Sieghard,

I'm glad you mentioned the Voice Dreamreader at the end of your post. Its so
much simpler than anything else when used with DropbBox. The other way
sounds like so much work.

Subject: RE: How do you put mp3 books on the i-phone

Hi Cathy,

If you want to read the MP3 books with the Music app you would have to use
iTunes to sync them to your device. They will, as you guessed, show up in
the music library in iTunes, but here you can highlight all the files, then
press Control+I for "Get Info" and in the Options tab find the combo box for
Media Type. Here change the type from Music to Audio Books, then tab to OK
and activate it.

Doing this will move the books into the Books library and if you then
connect your phone, go to the Books tab and either check to sync all books
or selected books, you can then sync them to you rphone.
If you now open the Music app on your phone double tap the More tab at the
bottom right and you will have an Audio Books category which you can double
tap to see your books.

I would highly recommend that once you have added the files to iTunes and
you select them and go to Get Info that you also put the Author in the
Artist field and the name of the book in the album field. This is under the
Info tab. I would then go to each of the MP3 files individually and make ure
to give it the correct number in track number otherwise your book may not
play in order.

If your book consists of many MP3 files I recommend that you either use the
free software application "Chapter and Vers" which allows you to select all
the MP3 files, convert them to M4B which is the iTunes book format and the
software then combines all the files into a single file which at the end of
the process is automatically added to your iTunes books library where it
will be ready to be synced.

You could also make a zip folder of all your MP3 files and, if you use
Dropbox, copy it into a Dropbox folder and then use Voice Dreamreader to
listen to your book.

Regards,
Sieghard

2014-04-18 Thread David Chittenden
Unless specifically told different, I always assume the person is using iTunes.
Though some people hate iTunes and avoid it as much as possible, iTunes is
Apple's default interface for managing iOS devices, and no amount of
complaining by a very tiny minority has yet changed this fact. Also, Apple has
made iTunes accessible over the past several years. It is different from other
media management software, and requires one to learn a different way of
conceptualising working with one's media, but this, in no way, makes it less
accessible.

Selecting text from Kindle books

2014-04-18 Thread Ezzie Bueno
Hello friends:
When I try to select text from Kindle books, I double tap and hold, but have
the menu opened instead. What am I doing wrong? How can I select text from a
Kindle book? The traditional way of selecting text does not seem to work for me
in the app. (LOL. )
Thank you for any help that you all can offer! :-)

Yes, the iPhone is a computer. Like all computers, it occasionally needs to be
turned off and then on again in order to fully refresh its RAM. People who say
this is never necessary do not understand how computer RAM memory works. Even
large network servers must be rebooted every few months. All computer memory
eventually fragments.

Thank you, seems turning the phone off and on again helped; I looked in the
contacts app itself and this time it showed the ringtone option—a strange kwirk
that fixed itself.

Thank you.

Hi,

This may sound crazy, but I have two suggestions for you to try. First, try
changing the ring tone from the phone’s contacts tab and compare that to using
the contacts app directly. If that doesn’t work, my second suggestion is to be
certain you didn’t accidentally use the email field for the phone number. Just
try deleting it and re-adding it with a new phone field. Since there are both
home and work labels for email and phone, I’ve made this mistake before.

Basic text editing and rotor question.

2014-04-18 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
I believe I have a basic grasp of the rotor and how to navigate it.

However I do have some questions with which I would appreciate some guidance
with.

Firstly if I have edited some text and double tap the text entry area Voice
Over announces 'is editing character mode'. I can get to the start and end
of the area but cannot see how to navigate with in the area by character
which I assume I should be able to.

Similarly with in e-mails received and ready to send.

Web page navigation too.

In essence what I am struggling with is how to proceed once a rotor
selection has been made what to do next.

Is there any correlation between Voice Over and a traditional screen reader
in this respect.

Any help welcome.

Malcolm

Re: Moving with a new phone from one U.S. carrier to another

2014-04-18 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

There are now only two variations of the iPhone 5s. One that works on sprints
network, and one that works on everyone else's. Therefore, I'd avoid using
Sprint as your carrier unless you are 110% that you will be happy with Sprint.
It's not enough to say CDMA anymore. Verizon is CDMA, yet it's the same iPhone
as ATT uses. In a nutshell, all carries except Sprint use the same core iPhone
model, making Sprint the black sheep of iPhones. You will notice there are a
lot more deals on Sprint iPhones on ebay and even from Sprint because you're
stuck with Sprint if you get one of those.

Locking is a bit trickier. Again, you can buy an unlocked phone from Apple, but
don't expect to get it on Verizon. Verizon doesn't like to add CDMA phones that
it doesn't know about already in it's database. If you read the fine print
you'll note the unlocked phone is only for non CDMA networks.

>From what I can tell, and I have not confirmed this, but it looks right, the

Bottom line, an unlocked Verizon iPHone will give you the most possible options
should you decide to switch carriers.

RE: How do you put mp3 books on the i-phone

2014-04-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,
Sieghard

RE: Netatmo update fixes minimum/maximum outdoor temperature issue and supports rain gauge

2014-04-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
No problem, just keep in mind that the rain gauge by itself won't do
anything, you do have to have the main weather station first, if you get
that and the rain gauge it would be a $258 investment and I think shipping
in the States is $8, so a total of $266.

Re: Can't open Pages documents in Dropbox

2014-04-18 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

First of all, be sure you have the latest versions of Pages on your Mac and
IPhone and the latest version of Dropbox on your phone. Then, when you
double-tap a Pages file, see if there's a Share button. It would be in the
lower left corner of the screen, I believe. Or touch the bottom right control
and flick left until you find it. The file may need to download first, so it
may be a little while before any controls are available:

Once you choose Share, the final option on the Share screen should be Open In.
Choose that, and then choose Pages.

Anna

Re: How do you put mp3 books on the i-phone

2014-04-18 Thread Penny Reeder
I did a Google Search for "Snowden Saga + Vanity Fair + May 2014," and
followed the link I found in the web site that came up.

Apparently you can subscribe for a whole year of Vanity Fair, or
purchase issues in audio format, month-by-month. The MP3 file says
"abridged," but I read the Snowden Saga last night (which is why I
bought the May issue), and it did not seem significantly abridged in
any way to me, and the reader was excellent.

am wanted to know step by step on how to put these kind of books on the
phone. she has a 5s and I have a 5 i-phone. Thanks for the info in

RE: Importing m3u playlists to i tunes

2014-04-18 Thread Alan Lemly
I assume you have those playlists you want to get into iTunes on your
computer or the ability to get them there from your Nokia C 5-00. When you
have them on your computer and know their folder location, do the following
for iTunes for Windows:

1. Launch iTunes.
2. Select the File menu and navigate to the Add file to Library submenu. You
can use the shortcut keys alt + f + a to execute this quickly.
3. You will be in a browse dialog box where you can browse to the playlist
files you want to add to iTunes, highlight them and then select alt + o to
open them.
4. The playlists should now be listed in the iTunes playlist section.

Good luck.

RE: Saving pictures

2014-04-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi DJ,

Here is what you do:

1. Double tap on the message which says "includes picture", the picture is
displayed on the screen. At the top left of the screen is a Back button at
the top right is a "Share" button.
2. Double tap on Share, you get a pop-up menu with a number of choices.
Below is the list I have, it might be slightly different for you as Airdrop,
for example, is only available on the iPhone 5, 5C and 5S and whether you
have Facetime and Dropbox, for example, depends on whether you have these
apps. Anyhow, here is the list I have:

Enable Airdrop Sharing - maybe it will simply say Airdrop if you have
already enabled it
Message - here you can send it in a text or iMessage to somebody else
Mail - to attach it to an email
Twitter
Facebook
Flickr - only available if you have an account I think
Open in Dropbox
Open in Prizmo
Open in Whats App
Save Image - that's the one you want in order to save it to the camera roll
Assign to Contact
Copy
Prnt
Cancel

3. Double tap on "Save Image" The menu goes away and you are back on your
picture, you can tap the Back button at the top left and get out of your
message or move on to the next message in the thread with a picture. If you
check your Camera Roll before you do this you'll find that after you double
tap on Save Image there will be 1 more image there than before.

Good luck,
Sieghard

RE: Netatmo update fixes minimum/maximum outdoor temperature issue and supports rain gauge

2014-04-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Marianne,

The Netatmo Weather Station is the product I have been posting about and it
is not a thermostat at all. I believe Netatmo also does make a WiFi enabled
thermostat, but it is only available in Europe, actually, I think it's
available in France where Netatmo is located and maybe in Germany and some
other countries, but not in all European countries. To my knowledge Netatmo
is not planning to introduce the thermostat to the North American market
where a number of WiFi thermostats already exist.

If you are looking for an accessible thermostat to control your heating/air
conditioning via an iOS app you should check out www.RadioThermostat.com. I
own 3 of their WiFi thermostats, they work great and I have had them for I
think at least 2 or 3 years now and they work flawlessly. The app is
accessible and you can buy the thermostat for $139 on the website, but I
have seen posts from others who own it and who say that in the States you
can often get it for $99 at Home Depot and of course it's also available on
Amazon.

The Netatmo weather station consists of an indoor and outdoor module which
measure temperature, humidity, air pressure and they also keep track of
indoor and outdoor minimum and maximum temperatures for the day (from
Midnight to Midnight) and the indoor module also measures CO2 level and
noise. You can add up to 3 additional indoor modules for $79 each to put in
other rooms in your house or the basement if you wish and the newest item
which is just now starting to ship is a rain sensor which keeps track of
aily rainfall. It is also $79 and the main weather station is $179, that's
your primary indoor module which has the WiFi connectivity built-in and the
one outdoor module.

A wind sensor is coming and while this is not a cheap device, it does work
well and Netatmo has done an excellent job to make the readings accessible.
As far as I know it is also the only weather station for iOS and you can
also access the information by logging into your account on the Netatmo
website. However, it's much easier and more accessible via the app.

Best regards,
Sieghard

I believe the app Chime Squirrel will do that. I believe there's a free lite

Re: Netatmo update fixes minimum/maximum outdoor temperature issue and supports rain gauge

2014-04-18 Thread Marianne Denning
I am considering getting netatmo. Is all of it accessible with
voiceover? What do you find most helpful to you? I was checking out
their website and really getting excited about it. Can you run your
thermostat with your IPhone?

Re: iBooks App Overview Sought

2014-04-18 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi all.

There are two things that I would wish could be done different in ibooks.
1. it would be fine if we could use continuously reading so that we could avoid
going to the next page all the time.

2. When I read a page and if I wants to go a line back in the buttom of the
page, I will be sendt to the top of the page.

Best regards Annie.

ebook format and print simultaneously. I think Kindle may have even more
of a selection than iBooks. One thing I still marvel at is the ability to
hear an interview with an author or a book review and find it much of the

You can read epub files and also pdf files in iBooks, but you can't port
the ibook format into other apps.

Netatmo update fixes minimum/maximum outdoor temperature issue and supports rain gauge

2014-04-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Netatmo users,

I received a message from Netatmo regarding Voiceover not reading outdoor
minimum and maximum temperatures any more since the last update. The issue
has been fixed and the update was submitted to Apple, it should be available
next week.

I was also told that the new rain gauge measurement will be correctly read
by Voiceover, here is the reply I received:

Hi Sieghard

There is indeed an issue regarding min and max temperature values for
Voiceover on version 1.4.0. It has been fixed and will be available again on
1.4.1 release available next week. Thanks for reporting this issue we were
unaware of.

As for the rain gauge support for Voiceover, the values are correctly read
on version 1.4.0 but the labels are wrong (reading temperature instead of
last hour rain, etc.) The labels will be appropriate on version 1.4.1

RE: Has Sendero Lookaround lost its intersection announcements?

2014-04-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Robin,

I think what happened is that the vibrations/movements from walking triggered
the Shake feature, at least that is how I always interpreted this on my iPhone.
You can, I think, set the Shake to be very sensitive or less sensitive.

Thanks Sieghard and Wayne. Certainly last time I used it tapping ‘Next cross
street’ put it in a mode whereby it was constantly monitoring and announcing as
you walked. It would make a squelching sound every five seconds or so to show
it was constantly updating and whenever it had fresh info it would report it. I
will look at BlindSquare, though, as I’d love to have this feature available

Oh, Dear, Slacker Problem Again . . .

2014-04-18 Thread Christine Grassman
Despite Slacker's fantastic job making its iPhone app accessible once again, I
have run into a snag they clearly did not anticipate. I received an "unusual
activity" message while listening; I had the audacity to spend some time
exploring a bunch of different stations in a short period of time. I was asked
for my password, but then, asked to type the "text in the image". I tried
closing and reopening the app; tried rebooting my phone. Still stuck.
I wrote to them, and Tweeted as well; no response so far. Meanwhile, a
subscription for which I paid is unusable, and I cannot seem to figure out
where on the web site I can go to attempt a workaround to access my account. I
cannot locate any log in or account link.

Otterbox Replacement

2014-04-18 Thread dwyates14
Even more of a reason to recommend the Otterbox line of phone cases.
I’d heard from several of you on list to see if I could get them to replace my
Defender case when the clamp snapped off of the holster piece.
So, gave it a shot and even though was over a year old, they replaced the case,
the rubber covering and the holster at no charge! I did have to get pictures
of the three pieces and upload that to a link they gave me. But, for a 35
dollar case, didn’t mind at all!
Thanks for the tips re getting it replaced.

Square card reader

2014-04-18 Thread Lois Butterfield
I did some expensive experimenting yesterday to see how the square reader
worked with blue tooth, etc. Bluetooth headphones do not work with the card
reader plugged in, even if you turn it off and back on after plugging in the
reader. The splitter also did not work with regular headphones even though
the splitter would work if only the reader was plugged in. Maybe, it is
some sort of security feature that is built in. The only way to use the
reader is to plug it in to swipe the card, then take it out again to sign
and finish the transaction. The Bluetooth comes back when you take the
reader out, likewise the wired headphones.

If you have silence when you unplug the reader, you will know that the swipe
was successful and you are at the signature screen. After signing, you wait
until you hear it was successful. Before that, there is no speech. I will
get used to it eventually.

So, it does work, just has a few quirks.

Good luck,
Lois

I recall I may have once turned off repeated alerts for Voice Mail and

Any help with this appreciated.

2014-04-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
This is only partly correct, text messages and so on are also included in
this other category as far as I know.

Hi,

Usually this is application specific data. I suggest you actually go to the
settings application, then to General, then to usage, you'll get a very
detailed list of apps and how much memory they are using. For example, you
might find that your Newspaper app is small, but you have gigs of old issues
stored on it, making it's total storage size much larger than you thought.

Good luck on your storage hunt.

Best.

can see my ibooks, documents, music, etc listed. There's however a
mysterious category "other' listed as well which at present occupies over
4GB. This a large chunk of my phone memory. Do you know what it might be?
Are they iOS system files?
