Re: The ScanJig

2014-12-29 Thread Richard Turner
That metal stand is there to brace the device holder when you use a tablet, at
least, that is my conclusion. It doesn't do much with the weight of an iPhone.
But put an iPad or an Android tablet on the device holder, and the metal stand
will help steady the holder.

Re: Audio Book Purchase Not Appearing Anywhere

2014-12-29 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Alex,

Here are the obvious suggestions first.

Be sure you’re focused in the Audiobooks tab of iTunes. A quick way to get
there is to press Command-9 to go to Internet Radio, which doesn’t have an
iTunes store counterpart, then Command-6 to choose Audiobooks. Make sure the
search box is empty, and see if your book is listed.

If it isn’t, go to the Store menu and choose Check for Downloads.

If that doesn’t help, choose View Account from the Store menu. Your most recent
purchase is shown on that page.

For other types of purchases, you can get to them by going to Home in the store
with Command-Shift-H and choosing the Purchased link. However, Audiobooks isn’t
a category there. I think this is because audiobooks aren’t available in the
cloud the way movies, books, and music are. I only mention it because this is
an accessible way to view your other purchases.

If none of these ideas help you find your book, choose Apple Service and
Support from the iTunes help menu and choose the link to contact Apple support.
Whenever I’ve had any trouble with the iTunes store, the iTunes store support
people have been great.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck finding your book!

Best,
Anna

Hi Lois,

I hope you don’t mind if I offer a correction here. The Delete button which so
to speak is the master delete button is visually above all the book titles, not
to the left.

There is a “Refresh” button Just above of the first book and on the very right
of the screen and the Delete button is just to the left of that.

It’s in the row above the book titles which from left to right has the
following 4 buttons:

All Titles, Recent, Delete and Refresh

Once you double tap that Delete button, a “Remove” button appears to the right
of each downloaded book just as you described. Audible did this nicely since it
does not only say “Remove”, but Voiceover will say “Remove” followed by the
book title so there is no guess work and you can just drag your finger down the
right side of the screen and find the Remove button you want. Of course if you
want to remove the book you last listened to then it most likely will be at the
top and the Remove button for it will be just underneath the “Refresh” button.

Once you confirmed that you want to remove the title and it’s done, you need to
find that delete button again and double tap on it to turn off delete mode and
now the Remove buttons will no longer be there. This is one item Audible still
needs to improve on, it used to say that the “Delete” button was selected a few
versions ago, right now Voiceover does not announce whether it is turned on or
off.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hi Shirley,

The delete button is to the left of the book title. If you swipe, it is easier
to find. After you double tap the delete button, you need to swipe right to
find the remove button, then find the button to verify after double tapping the
remove button. It works well. It just takes practice to find the buttons.

Good luck,

I have the Verbatim Wireless Bluetooth Folding Keyboard and though I cannot
comment on its ease of use since it's been in the drawer since I got it, I
do like it's fit and finish. The keys are almost full sized and although the

RE: The ScanJig

2014-12-29 Thread Richard Petty
After my previously reported concern about shipping cost for the
ScanJig-which was completely resolved by the manufacturer-I was happily
surprised to receive the unit by mail today, a very short shipping time.

The ScanJig is indeed far more sturdy than the ScanStand. It's well made and
the pieces fit well. It is, as Richard Turner noted, thicker than the
ScanStand. It's not a commuter device, but I doubt my ScanStand would have
held up well if I had tried to travel with it often. I think the ScanJig
would travel well, just not conveniently. I expect I will leave it set up on
my desk most of the time. Richard Turner's report was very much on target.
It's a nice unit.

I do have one question that perhaps Richard or someone else can answer: the
more or less flat device holder has what looks like a wire brace attached to
one side. I cannot figure out what that brace does, which makes me think I
haven't quite managed to set it up correctly. Otherwise, the stand seems to
fit properly.

I will appreciate a clarification on this.

Thanks.

Subject: The ScanJig

OK, I now have seen what I consider the Cadillac of stands.

I got the ScanJig at work Monday. I used KNFB Reader to scan the setup
instructions, free-hand, and was able to figure out the pieces and put it
together.

I enjoy puzzles, so it was fun putting it together. It didn't take more
than about 5 or 10 minutes to figure it out without sighted help.

There are pictures of the pieces, so a sighted person could probably do it
in 2.

The ScanJig costs $30.00.

It is made from hard plastic. It is a bit thicker than the other stands but
it looks way more durable.

It folds up into a box 13 by 9 and 1.5 inches thick.

The beauty of the ScanJig is that it can hold anything from a smart phone to
a tablet.

It holds both the document and the device at an angle so there is less
likelihood of casting a shadow over the document and it can capture the
maximum of the room light or use the flash. There are no lights needed on
the device itself.

There is a movable Device Holder that snaps into one of four slots at
various distances from the Document Shelf. On the Device Holder, is a
little shelf that snaps in to hold the phone or tablet. There are 10
adjustment holes so you can get the optimum height of the device pointing at
the document.

I found with both the iPhone 5s and the 6, that the first slot, which is
11.5 inches from the document was the best position. I also found that if I
put the shelf on the device holder in the second hole from the top, I can
get the entire document even if it has narrow margins.

There are some stick on pieces to help hold your device in place once you
get the position where you want it.

There are also two clips that can hold a document on the document shelf, for
example, a tri-fold letter that wants to curl, you can clip it in place so
it holds it steady.

It is definitely more bulky when folded up than either the Giraffe Reader or
the StandScan, but the fact that it will also hold a tablet from a full iPad
to an iPad Mini or any smart phone I think gives it a big edge. Not to
mention it is made out of much stronger material and at a great price.

I'm going to paste the setup instructions below and also the link to their
web site.

www.scanjig.com

Note: I added the focal distances to the setup instructions below.

ScanJig Set-up Instructions

Product Description:

The ScanJig is designed for easy tactile positioning of both a
smart device and documents for correct focus, alignment and field of view.

Once set up - the stand holds smart phones or tablets in a
vertical portrait orientation and at an angle where the device's touch
screen interface is facing the user. The stand can also hold a document, in
the same vertical portrait orientation, and angle, directly behind the
smart phone or tablet.

The device holder can be adjusted to position your device's rear
lens to point directly at the center of the document.

Once the device is positioned in the optimum location, stops can
be applied to lock in this position. Then your phone or tablet can easily
be placed in the same spot for each use.

The product's open design takes advantage of ambient light and
helps avoid shadows. Further the device flash is completely unobstructed if
this feature is needed.

What is stored inside the ScanJig

* 1 - Smart Device Holder and Device Shelf - the device will sit
on the shelf.

* 2 - Document Clips - to better hold creased documents or small
items.

* 4 - Peal and Stick Device Stops - after your mobile device is

You just need one list. It can just be called Reminders. You don't have to
use multiple ones if you don't want to do so.

Audio Book Purchase Not Appearing Anywhere

2014-12-29 Thread Alex Hall
Hi list,
Today, I purchased the first season of an audio drama I have been following in
podcast form for years. It was around $20, and my iTunes balance has been
reduced by that amount. However, on my Mac, I can't seem to find the book - it
looks like I have no purchased audio books at all. On iOS, in the iTunes Store
app, I can't figure out how to look at purchases. I have gone to "View Apple
ID", but there's no purchase history in there except the "show hidden
purchases" link that doesn't show much of anything. On the Mac, in iTunes, the
purchase history screen appears to be inaccessible, so that's no help.

Bottom line: where's my $20 book, how do I listen to it if I can find it, and
how do I view my purchase history on the Mac or iPhone? Thanks for any help,
and sorry if I sound frustrated.

While trying to straighten out the problem I mentioned with burned playlists, I
managed to get a "sort album" showing up in the playlist view. I changed
something under the Control-J view setting. Under 'Sort Order' and the Sort
Album dropdown, Sort Album is checked, but pressing Enter does not uncheck it.
No longer sure what the default was... Thanks.

RE: Playlists showing "sort album"- how to change this?

2014-12-29 Thread Don & Cher
Have no idea- so many pulldown menus are way too confusing- but got rid of the
annoying album sort order showing up in the playlist and changing the sort
order out of whack. Thanks anyway for always being there to help!

Thanks.

Bug with replying in notifications with bt keyboard

Hi all,

I am trying to use my keyboard to reply to a text from the notification menu on
the lock screen with my bt keyboard. The letters get doubled and it's basically
impossible to use. I've tried switching languages but that did not change the
problem. If I open the messages app it works fine.

Can anyone verify this?
If so, please report it to apple.

Thanks,

So, it looks like The Interview is available on iTunes to rent or buy. Has
anyone taken the plunge and know whether the DVS track is also accessible?

Haven’t yet had a chance to use that audio described feature in iOS and was
curious to know if this would be a film where one could try it out. Would have
gone to see it in the theatre, but well, you know… Boogie men and all that

PUK Code & SIM PIN

2014-12-29 Thread Bill Gallik
I ran into something I have no idea about whatsoever this morning; after
opening Settings/Phone I activated the "SIM PIN" button and attempted to
input the required code -- mistakenly thinking it is the same code as my
4-digit unlock code .

After entering my "Unlock Code" several times I noticed that a count was
decrementing toward 0 but I foolishly continued with this hapless endeavor.
Once that count did hit 0 I got a message that I needed to contact my
carrier to get the PUK Code.

I've done that, but now what do I do with this information? Can anybody tell
me where I need to go on my iPhone 6 to enter in this "PUK Code?"

And what in the world is the purpose of locking/unlocking the SIM?

Subject: Mark on the K N F B Reader

Hello Everyone,

During the recent K N F B Reader sale, I purchased a copy from the App
Store.

For years, I heard about how well the reader worked on the Symbian platform.
Of course, as fate would have it, I was a Windows Mobile user. By the time
I considered exploring Symbian, the iPhone 3GS hit the market and into the
Apple orchard, went I.

I just wanted to say how pleased I am with the ease-of-use of the reader and
how versatile it appears to be.

The accuracy is stunning, to say the least. I am running the app on an
iPhone 5 S with iOS 7.12.

When I purchased the app, I took it for a test drive, so to speak, and it
read several documents I received in the mail, including insurance
statements, bank notices, etc very well.

On Friday, I was sitting in an office waiting room. On the table in front
of me were several magazines. On a whim, I snapped a shot of a cover of one
of the magazines and, despite the image on the cover, it was read almost
perfectly. So, I decided to browse the magazine with the reader. As I had
my headset attached to the phone, I disturbed no one and was able to, on the
fly, access printed material. Marvelous.

Now keep in mind that I do have some usable residual vision such that I do
not need to first place the phone in the center of the page and then raise
it up in order to get a good shot of the document. Nevertheless, not until
now have I ever been able to enjoy reading printed material, on the fly,
without magnification, in such a relaxed manner.

What a wonderful piece of technology and how fortunate we are to live at a
time when such things are possible.

Mark

I'm sorry, but I think you'll have to contact Apple for help. I just checked,

I thought turning off Find my iPHone might be enough, but it isn't.

All the best,

Voice Dream Reader on sale

2014-12-29 Thread Richard Turner
FYI.

I just received this from Winston Chen, the developer of Voice Dream Reader.

Hi,

Just a quick note to let you know that Voice Dream Reader is now on sales at
50% off for 1 week. The last day will be January 4, 2015. It's a good time
to tell people who can benefit from it.

I've been busy working on a new app, Voice Dream Writer. It's a writing tool
designed for everyone who finds the Reader useful, particularly people with
dyslexia or visual impairment. It'll be released before the end of January.
I'm so excited that I can hardly wait!

Happy New Year!

Best,

Winston.

fingerprints and a passcode, though with some difficulty. The passcode
took several attempts, with the result that by the time it was
accepted I wasn't entirely sure how I had done it or exactly what it
was and therefore couldn't write it down in that proverbial safe
place. This morning I attempted to transfer my apps from an Icloud
backup of my Itouch and this is where I ran into trouble. Presumably
it was successful to the point where I need to reenter my passcode to
start it up and, you guessed it, I have no idea what it is. Can I do
anything to undo it and/or how can I find out the passcode if at all?
Maybe the real question is how should I have done this now that I know
what an idiot I really am? Any help or advice is much appreciated.
Tia.

Hello Richard:

We plan on adding support for retaining text formatting in early 2015. This
update will likely appear after we rework the exporting capabilities which
will take place after the first of the year.

I'm looking forward to these improvements.

Re: deleting reminders

2014-12-29 Thread Alex Hall
Find the reminder in whichever list it lives in. There are two options: delete
it, removing it forever, or marking it as complete, hiding it but leaving it in
the list under the "completed items" part.

To delete, simply swipe up with one finger while touching the reminder (not the
checkbox) until you hear "delete", and double tap. If you don't hear anything
about deleting, your rotor may not be set to Actions, which should happen
automatically when you touch any reminder.

To mark it as complete, find the checkbox labeled with the reminder's text and
double tap it. Next time you open this list, the completed reminder(s) will be
hidden.
