Maximising storage and battery life on my IPhone/IPad - any ideas?

2015-01-29 Thread Eleanor Roberts
Hi all

I'm sure this has been discussed many times before, so apologies in advance.
Now that I have a new IPhone and IPad Mini I really want to make an effort to
maximise the storage space on them and keep them as clear from
unwanted/unnecessary stuff being downloaded onto them without me
knowing/realising. I know for the Mac there are things like Memory Clean, Disk
Doctor and Clean My Mac. But just wondered if anyone knew of a good app which
is accessible and which might do a similar thing for my IPhone/IPad??

Also, on a secondary point, does anyone know of any good/accessible battery
management apps for the IPhone/IPad, as I'd like to make the most out of that
too and preserve it for as long as possible. I do have an external battery, but
obviously don't want to use this unless I have to. I'm also a bit worried if
you can overcharge an IPhone/IPad? I do always try to let them run down
completely, but when I charge them I'm never sure how long to leave them on
for, and then I always panick that I mighht have overdone it so-to-speak and
ruined/reduced my battery's life. So how long should you charge one of these
devices for? Any other ideas on how I could possibly proloong/preserve my
battery?

So if anyone has any tips on how I can do either of these things would all be
much appreciated.

Many thanks.

RE: Looking for music app with cross fading

2015-01-29 Thread Brett
Hi,

Yep, the only real issue is when changing between Spotify and your local music
library. This was fixed a version or two ago, but is now broken, you need to
toggle voiceover off now to choose the option you want. Once you know where the
icons are, it is quite easy to do, although not ideal.

Cheers,
Brett.

Ah, a good post. From my experience though, it isn't always the main
stream media that's at fault when some facts and expectations are
misrepresented. I've seen plenty a marketing brochure or press release
from a company making products for the blind that do more than imply
that some technology was off limits by the blind until they put out

going to hype their products, but IMHO, I've seen this carried too far

Over the last couple years, I’ve come to a conclusion about life as a
blind person: it isn’t the physical lack of sight that’s the biggest
difficulty I face; but rather, it is attempting to overcome peoples’
negative stereotypes and misconceptions about what I can — and cannot —
do that is the real problem.

When I think of situations where negative stereotypes about blind people
come into play, the use of technology isn’t the first thing that comes
to mind. I tend to think about education, or employment, or parenting
long before I think of access to the latest and greatest tech. But, as a
recent /Wire/d article about a new Braille-writing app demonstrated,
misconceptions still abound about what technology blind people are able
to gainfully use.

The article, published on January 23, 2015, was written about a new iPad
app called iBrailler Notes. The app, which allows users to type notes on
their iPad using Braille, was just recently released on the App Store.
iBrailler’s main selling point is a "Dynamic Keyboard" — a feature which
adjusts the position of the Braille keyboard each and every time you
place your fingers on the screen.

It’s always great to see mainstream media outlets reporting on news
impacting the visually impaired, because these stories often educate the
public about just how much empowerment blind people can have through the
use of assistive technology. What isn’t so great, however, is when
journalists get very important details wrong and thus inaccurately
represent a story — and therein lies my motivation for writing this post.

In the first paragraph of the /Wired/ article, the author states that it
is "nearly impossible" for blind people to use devices with touchscreens:

/The proliferation of touchscreen technology may have revolutionized
mobile computer input for most everyone, but there’s one sector of the
population that isn’t exactly feeling the pinch, the tap, or the swipe:
the blind. It’s nearly impossible to interact with elements on a totally
smooth screen if you can’t see./

Put simply, the author’s "facts" are completely inaccurate. Thanks to
Apple’s excellent implementation of VoiceOver screen-reading technology,
blind users are able to fully and independently utilize the touchscreens
on their devices.

Need to find a specific app on your home screen? No problem! Either
flick left or right with one finger and listen to VoiceOver read the app
names as you pass them; or you can just move your finger around the
screen to get an idea of the layout.

Want to send an e-mail? You got it! Your options include using the
touchscreen keyboard in three different typing modes; built-in Braille
Screen Input; Handwriting Mode; and of course, dictation. (That’s
another thing that gets on my nerves: dictation is not the
be-all-and-end-all solution for text entry on an iOS device if you are
blind.)

iOS isn't for you? Have no fear! It’s possible to use a touchscreen on
an Android device as well, even if the experience isn’t as polished as
it is on iOS.

Oh, and about those gestures that blind people supposedly can’t "feel":
not only can blind users tap, pinch, and swipe; we can two-, three-, and
four-finger double-tap; we can write Braille with Apple’s built-in
Braille keyboard feature; and we can even use Handwriting Mode if we so
desire.

For being "nearly impossible" to use, Apple’s touchscreen-equipped
devices are popular with blind people the world over. Android, while not
as accessible as iOS, also has blind people using touchscreen devices.
It’s even possible to use touchscreen Windows 8.1 computers with screen
reading software. The only mobile phone platform blind people don’t have

Hi all,

What I figured out is a combination of what Sieghard was saying and the fact
that it worked for me for a while but couldn't figure out what I had done.

If you double tap and hold on an app above the bottom row and then hit the
home button, you can double tap on an app in the bottom row and it will
offer to delete it. Say no, press the home button once and double tap the
app in the bottom row again and you can move it anywhere you want.

I don't call this solving a problem but it's a work around until they decide
to fix it.

Re: opening a document in voice dream writer

2015-01-29 Thread Alex Hall
The only problem with using it as a plain text file all the time is that you'll
lose formatting. Markdown can render your formatting just fine, but that means
you'd have to save a blank copy of the invoice, duplicate it, modify the
duplicate with the details you need, export that copy as Word or Rich text,
then you're all set. I wouldn't personally use this app for this purpose just
yet, but that's just me.

The only mobile phone platform blind people don’t have
access to is BlackBerry, but who really uses that in 2015, anyway?

It is worth noting that not all touchscreen technology is currently
accessible to blind people. As one of my readers pointed out,
point-of-sale systems, ATM machines, and any other touchscreen-equipped
devices that do not have speech output are not useable by blin

Use word to save as plain text.
Then open it in Writer, use the mark down features to put in headers, bold,
etc, and export it back as a word file.
Or, just start using it as a plain text file.

Hello everyone,
I have an invoice which was created in word a while ago. I can use the same
invoice for every facility that I work for, but, I just need to edit a few
things. I was wanting to edit it in writer on my iPhone 6. I have the invoice

can not open a rich text document, that it has to be in plane text. Any

I'm super, super excited to introduce my new app: Voice Dream Writer.
It's a writing tool -- or word processor -- designed for the same people who
found my reading app useful.

Voice Dream Writer's goal is to help everyone be a better writer.
Three powerful features make this possible: Text-to-speech proofreading reduces
mistakes; phonetic and meaning word search improves spelling and word usage;
and synchronized outline helps organizing and structuring compositions. To
learn more, watch me demonstrate it here: http://www.voicedream.com/writer/

Like the Reader, it's a labor of love. Since last year, this app
lived with me day and night. It's been all consuming and exhilarating.

Writer is available in the App Store in English speaking countries
for now. The normal price is $9.99, but until this Sunday it'll be on sale for
$7.99. To download, click on this link: http://appstore.com/voicedreamwriter.

I hope you'll like it and tell others about it. As always, I cherish
your comments and suggestions.

Hi, Two things. You have to run it first and then I took it out of the app
switcher. Second, you have to have a file showing in the writer, otherwise you
get a no voice found message. When I did those two things, I can now have other

has not done it since. I'll keep looking to see if I can find anything.

I've noticed this as well. Sometimes, a reboot will clear this issue up but not
always. You are not the only one but I haven't tested this with the latest IOS

Transferring playlists to the iPhone

2015-01-29 Thread Rick Alfaro
I know how to have my iPhone sync and fill from specific play lists but for
some reason, the play list name is never transferred across to the device.
Am I missing a step or doing something wrong, or is this not possible? I
have several playlists that I've put together but it's quite tedious to have
to create the lists again on my device after the music is transferred. Note,
these are not Smart play lists.

Re: Looking for music app with cross fading

2015-01-29 Thread Brent Harding
I wish one of the services like Spotify or Pandora would do a good job at
this. Spotify attempts to crossfade, but it's kind of hit or miss. Also, it
is the most varied on the volume level, being louder than most other stuff
on the phone when hooked up to a dock most of the time, to some songs being
soft.

I'm looking for a music playback app that can do cross fading and even
normalizing if at all possible. I used to use an app called Muxica but for
whatever reason, it has stopped working as of IOS 8.x. I've deleted it and
reinstalled with no improvement so I'd like to find a similar app to replace
it. Any suggestions welcomed.

Looking for music app with cross fading

2015-01-29 Thread Rick Alfaro
I'm looking for a music playback app that can do cross fading and even
normalizing if at all possible. I used to use an app called Muxica but for
whatever reason, it has stopped working as of IOS 8.x. I've deleted it and
reinstalled with no improvement so I'd like to find a similar app to replace
it. Any suggestions welcomed.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

Neal,

I've noticed this as well. Sometimes, a reboot will clear this issue up but not
always. You are not the only one but I haven't tested this with the latest IOS
upgrade which I installed a couple of days ago.

I think siri only reads new and unread messages.
When I attempted to do this now what I got was there are no new messages.

RE: I thought i was done asking about the Plantronics Legend but

Alan,

If there is caller id info, is it announced by your TTS voice? I would imagine
so since usually voice prompts built into headsets are usually pre-recorded
human voice files with predetermined vocabulary.

The Legend will announce the phone number of an unknown caller. However, if
there is caller ID information then that will be announced but I suspect this

[New post] You know, blind people can actually use touchscreens

2015-01-29 Thread christopher hallsworth

You know, blind people can actually use touchscreens
by
 MacDailyNews
[cfsp key="adsense_336x280"]a
href="http://www.applevis.com/blog/advocacy-apple-applevis-assistive-technology-braille-ios-ipad-news-opinion/note-mainstream

"
 target="_new">By Michael Hansen

Over the last couple years, I’ve come to a conclusion about life as a blind
person: it isn’t the physical lack of sight that’s the biggest difficulty I
face; but rather, it is attempting to overcome peoples’ negative stereotypes
and misconceptions about what I can — and cannot — do that is the real problem.

When I think of situations where negative stereotypes about blind people come
into play, the use of technology isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. I
tend to think about education, or employment, or parenting long before I think
of access to the latest and greatest tech. But, as a recent Wired article about
a new Braille-writing app demonstrated, misconceptions still abound about what
technology blind people are able to gainfully use.

The article, published on January 23, 2015, was written about a new iPad app
called iBrailler Notes. The app, which allows users to type notes on their iPad
using Braille, was just recently released on the App Store. iBrailler’s main
selling point is a "Dynamic Keyboard" — a feature which adjusts the position of
the Braille keyboard each and every time you place your fingers on the screen.

It’s always great to see mainstream media outlets reporting on news impacting
the visually impaired, because these stories often educate the public about
just how much empowerment blind people can have through the use of assistive
technology. What isn’t so great, however, is when journalists get very
important details wrong and thus inaccurately represent a story — and therein
lies my motivation for writing this post.

In the first paragraph of the Wired article, the author states that it is
"nearly impossible" for blind people to use devices with touchscreens:

The proliferation of touchscreen technology may have revolutionized mobile
computer input for most everyone, but there’s one sector of the population that
isn’t exactly feeling the pinch, the tap, or the swipe: the blind. It’s nearly
impossible to interact with elements on a totally smooth screen if you can’t
see.

Put simply, the author’s "facts" are completely inaccurate. Thanks to Apple’s
excellent implementation of VoiceOver screen-reading technology, blind users
are able to fully and independently utilize the touchscreens on their devices.

Need to find a specific app on your home screen? No problem! Either flick left
or right with one finger and listen to VoiceOver read the app names as you pass
them; or you can just move your finger around the screen to get an idea of the
layout.

Want to send an e-mail? You got it! Your options include using the touchscreen
keyboard in three different typing modes; built-in Braille Screen Input;
Handwriting Mode; and of course, dictation. (That’s another thing that gets on
my nerves: dictation is not the be-all-and-end-all solution for text entry on
an iOS device if you are blind.)

iOS isn't for you? Have no fear! It’s possible to use a touchscreen on an
Android device as well, even if the experience isn’t as polished as it is on
iOS.

Oh, and about those gestures that blind people supposedly can’t "feel": not
only can blind users tap, pinch, and swipe; we can two-, three-, and
four-finger double-tap; we can write Braille with Apple’s built-in Braille
keyboard feature; and we can even use Handwriting Mode if we so desire.

For being "nearly impossible" to use, Apple’s touchscreen-equipped devices are
popular with blind people the world over. Android, while not as accessible as
iOS, also has blind people using touchscreen devices. It’s even possible to use
touchscreen Windows 8.1 computers with screen reading software. The only mobile
phone platform blind people don’t have access to is BlackBerry, but who really
uses that in 2015, anyway?

It is worth noting that not all touchscreen technology is currently accessible
to blind people. As one of my readers pointed out, point-of-sale systems, ATM
machines, and any other touchscreen-equipped devices that do not have speech
output are not useable by blind people without sighted assistance. However,
blind people do have the capability to use touchscreen devices if appropriate
assistive technology solutions are implemented—a point the author conveniently
failed to mention in the article.

Further down in the article, the author contradicts herself by stating,
correctly, that the iPad was completely accessible to blind users from day one
— thanks to VoiceOver. And yes, that i

Re: Voice dream writer with braille display

2015-01-29 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi,

If you use the cursor controls to move through a document, you can move to the
previous item, and braille will be exactly where the cursor is. It's not ideal,
but it does mean braille is still useful if you can hear VoiceOver.

Best,
Anna

Re: still cannot clear notification center!!

2015-01-29 Thread Teresa Cochran
I've found two solutions to this problem. You can either leave things as they
are and delete each item individually with the actions rotor item, or you can
go to settings, general, reset and reset all your phone settings. The second
option is more of a pain, because you may lose your passwords, unless you
restore from an encrypted iTunes backup. I only used the second method
accidentally, as I was trying to reset settings to attempt to correct a
Bluetooth keyboard issue. That issue didn't change, but I was suddenly able to
use triple-tap to clear notifications.

Please note: this is a bug that has been reported by some. This bug does not
allow you to clear the notifications either with a double-tap twice or a
triple-tap.

Teresa

As being a loyal user of Text Grabber with my StandScan Pro, I am able to use
the KNFB Reader without the StandScan Pro and the time it takes to get
everything aligned to obtain perfect results. Also, the KNFB Reader will nicely
read PDF docs. True that one has a translation option in Text Grabber. Text
Grabber use to be my app of choice until I purchased KNFB Reader. JMO.

I'm super, super excited to introduce my new app: Voice Dream Writer. It's a
writing tool -- or word processor -- designed for the same people who found
my reading app useful.

Voice Dream Writer's goal is to help everyone be a better writer. Three
powerful features make this possible: Text-to-speech proofreading reduces
mistakes; phonetic and meaning word search improves spelling and word usage;
and synchronized outline helps organizing and structuring compositions. To
learn more, watch me demonstrate it here: http://www.voicedream.com/writer/

Like the Reader, it's a labor of love. Since last year, this app lived with
me day and night. It's been all consuming and exhilarating.

Writer is available in the App Store in English speaking countries for now.
The normal price is $9.99, but until this Sunday it'll be on sale for $7.99.
To download, click on this link: http://appstore.com/voicedreamwriter.

I hope you'll like it and tell others about it. As always, I cherish your
comments and suggestions.

Cheers!

Re: KNFB Reader dropts to $49.99

2015-01-29 Thread Feliciano Godoy
TextGrabber is actually really great for what it cost. You can translate text
instantly after recognizing text.that alone is something to convince someone to
go with.after some practice, you don't end up using the field view report and
tilt guidance.although text grabber may not be designed for the blind, it is
accessible out of the box.

Re: KNFB Reader dropts to $49.99

2015-01-29 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
Yes, the 4S does work, but I find it's best to remove all items from the app
switcher as sometimes I don't get results, possibly because of a memory hungry
app needing to use more resources.

If you are running at least a 4S but I would say a 5 or higher, it is most
certainly worth it if nothing else for the speed and accuracy.
After taking the picture, on a 5S at least, it begins reading the text in
about 2 seconds.
You can easily add more pages, etc.
It does not, as yet, retain the format of the original document however, but
I have high hopes that will be coming in an update.
But, it also depends on how much scanning you would be doing whether it is
worth it to you. Only you can determine that.

I haven't been able to verify this since I already own the app. I can't
see the current price when searching for the app in the App Store.

Blocking groups on whatsapp

2015-01-29 Thread TaraPrakash
dear all.
someone added me to a group on whatsapp without my consent. How can I get rid
of that group? Please let me know how to ensure that I am not added to groups
without my consent? My primary concern is to ensure that messages from this
group don't reach me. It is annoying to be swamped by unnecessary messages.
Will appreciate any help.

Regards

Re: Braille Displays

2015-01-29 Thread John Diakogeorgiou
I am looking at the Super Vario2. I need to make a decision today.
Unfortunately I am won't have a chance to feel it. I am going on the
recommendation of a friend. It will be used with both the IPhone and a
Windows laptop. If anyone has tried this and have a better suggestion
please write me off list. I totally understand that a lot of this is
by preference but don't have that luxury.

I would always recommend trying a couple of displays yourself before

 Hope this helps,

Is this Baum one the one that allows you to connect to multiple devices and
then switch between them? I like my braille edge very much, but if it is
paired to multiple devices things get interrupted when one of the ones not
being used with it at the time comes up with a notification or something. To
be able to switch like you can with a bluetooth keyboard like the multilink
or Logitech k811, for instance, would be a wonderful advantage for anybody
wanting to use a braille display with multiple devices. I saw a
demonstration of this on Tech Talk but at the time it wasn't actually
shipping yet if this is the same one.

I would always recommend trying a couple of displays yourself before

How do you turn off the speech feedback as you go along in a file. When I'm

I would like to remind people that Prizmo is also an excellent app!it is
cheaper and reads the text as soon as it is recognised just as quickly as the
KNFB reader does.however, the interface is a little more clunky.I find it is a
great partner to the K and FB reader.that is, if one doesn't manage very well,
then, the other probably will.

Just my thoughts, Sandy
