RE: I'm Tellin' You, Lock It Down

2015-04-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Teresa,

I am so sorry someone stole your property. That sounds absolutely horrible.

A couple of weeks ago, when carrying some groceries into the house, I left my
iPhone 6 Plus in the front seat of a friend's car who was waiting for me to
return to the car so we could continue running errands.

Upon entering the house, I realized that I had left my phone in the car. Prior
to Touch-ID/Pass Code, this would have caused me great concern as, while not
exactly a snoop, my friend might have let her curiosity get the better of her
and, quote, glanced, quote, at my phone (smile).

When I returned to the car, she handed me the phone saying, I did not try to
look at it.

To which I responded, Really? You mean you weren't tempted?

To which she replied, What's the point, you've got it on lock down. We both
laughed at that.

In addition to VoiceOver, I use the display a great deal but, when in waiting
rooms, standing in line, sitting in close proximity to others, say in the front
seat of a car, I turn on the screen curtain. Using the Screen Curtain brings
me great comfort, to put it mildly.

Say what you will about Apple but when they do it right, they do it better than
anyone.

Mark

Two years ago, I decided to start using a passcode, and also the setting that
erases the iPod if there are more than ten attempts to enter the passcode.
About a month after I set it up, I was sitting reading something, and noticed
my Braille display suddenly lost access to the text. I had put the iPod next to
my display on the table, and one of the volunteers at the Blind Center I had
gone to had simply literally lifted it. Before I could croak out a stunned
Hey! it was long gone. I created a police report, but never saw it again. I
had to buy another one. This time it doesn't leave my purse in public, unless
it absolutely has to. I've also set up two-step verification and the same
passcode settings.

 Hi,

VO talks while you enter your code. The keypad that you get is a phone

 Hello Everyone,

As I have posted, I support several people on both iOS and OSX as
 both clients and friends.

One of my friends, a fellow VoiceOver user, until now, has fervently
refused to setup either a Touch-ID or PIN on her iPhone 6, despite my
suggestions to the contrary. She said she thought it was too much
 trouble.

Today, she called me and told me that she, upon returning from a
short vacation with her family, accidentally left her phone in her
sister's house, approximately 800 miles away.

While her sister will FedEx the phone back to her, my friend was
afraid that her sister would and, according to her, most likely did,
 snoop on her phone.

She truly laments not having taken the time to setup her Touch-ID and
 password.

I'm tellin' you, lock it down before it's too late (smile).

Pandora Radio Issue since latest iOs update: anyone else?

2015-04-16 Thread Christine Grassman
I apologize if this has been discussed before. Since updating to the latest iOs
on my iPhone 6, I have been having an issue with the Pandora radio app I have
never experienced before:
If I am listening to a station and hit back arrow, I used to get a list of my
other stations and the option to create a new station. I could choose another
station and get to it (although sometimes it would go to the wrong station, and
I had to repeat the process, which was annoying, but not a deal breaker).
Now, when I go back, VO reads one station, whichever I happen to focus on when
I touch the screen, then the app freezes entirely. I have to play around with
the iPhone, hitting the Home button several times, or shutting VO off and then
on to get the iPhone working again, and Pandora must be closed and reopened.
Anyone else?
TIA.
Christine

unable to update apps

2015-04-16 Thread martin nelson
Hello: I recently updated my iphone 4s from ios 7.11 to 8.3. I find now that
when trying to updates the apps listed for update in the app store that they
show that they are either downloading or trying to connect, but the update
process remains stuck there. I have tried shutting off my phone but the problem
persists. Has anyone experienced this problem? What can be done to solve this
problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Martin Nelson

RE: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

2015-04-16 Thread Tom Rash
There's been something strange going on with reminders app for a while. I
used to say, Set a reminder for July 3rd. Then it would prompt me to say
what I wanted to be reminded about. I would then say, I have a dental
appointment tomorrow at 2 P.M. Siri would repeat it, then I'd confirm it,
and the day before my appointment I would be reminded. Now when I do this
for some reason Siri will not repeat the time of my appointment, and the
reminder time will be set for whatever time I have createdit, but it would
be right for the specified date. Yesterday I tried to set a reminder and it
kept saying OK, I will remind you on sunda at 11:49. no matter what time I
specified the time to be reminded.

Hi Neal,

Now, that is interesting. I just tried your wording and that worked, But
when I tried it by saying Remind me on Monday at 7:30 AM that I have a
Skype Call with Brian at 8 AM it just repeated that ver betum and when I
said Yes to create it SIRI just said I added this to your list which
means it's in my list but not so that at 7:30 it reminds me. Maybe I am
doing something wrong and you can maybe try to set a reminder for a date a
few days in the future and see if that works for you. Something like my
example, Remind me at a certain date and time about an event that same day
but maybe an hour or 2 later. As I said, this always used to work if you did
it in 2 parts, first tell SIRI you want a reminder on a certain date and
time and second tell it what you want the reminder to say including the time
when your appointment is or that it is in 1 hour, for example.

Sieghard

Hi, If I say to Siri, Remind me at 9:50 PM to lock the door at 10:00, She
will remind me at 9:50 to do just that. I don't know of a way to have her

Remind me again at 10:00, but at least I can get the early time reminder
this way.

Does this help?

Subject: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

Hi,

Just thought I write about something I noticed recently although I can't say
exactly when this started. I used to be able to set a reminder with SIRI in
a way that if I wanted to be reminded an hour or so before the appointment
or whatever I was reminding myself about, I would simply do it in two parts
like this:

Part 1: Set a reminder for Monday at 8 AM

SIRI would then say OK, just tell me what you want to be reminded about. I
would then do the second part like this example:

Part 2: Dentist appointment at 10 AM

SIRI would then confirm: Here is your reminder for Monday at 8 AM, it says:
Dentist appointment at 10 AM.

Now if I ask SIRI to create a reminder as in part 1 and then tell it what I
have above in part 2, the reply will be this:

Here is your reminder for Monday at 10 AM, it says Dentist appointment.

In other words it takes the time I want to hear the reminder before the
event and adds it to the time I want to be reminded at to create a reminder
at the time of the event. I find this very annoying since I always like to
remind myself a bit before and to have the actual time of my appointment or
phone call or whatever it is as part of the reminder.

Just now I wanted to set a reminder about a Skype call I have at 8 AM on
Monday. I tried to trick it into doing it by saying it differently like Set
a reminder at 7 AM on Monday and then Skype call with Brian at 8 AM or
Skype call with Brian in 1 hour or I have a Skype call in 60 minutes with
Brian. Each time it figured out that my Skype call was 1 hour from 7 AM and
wanted to create a reminder for 8 AM just called Skype call with Brian. I
finally tricked it by setting the reminder for 7:30 AM and saying Skype
call with Brian in 30 and I guess not saying 30 minutes confused it
enough.

Do I have better things to do than to try and be smarter than SIRI? *smile*.

Regards,

Sieghard

Re: Pandora Radio Issue since latest iOs update: anyone else?

2015-04-16 Thread Kimber Gardner
Do you have your apps updating automatically? Several people have
reported problems with the latest release of the Pandora app, so I'm
not sure it's related to the iOS update.

You might consider contacting Pandora and reporting the issue to them.

On 4/16/15, Christine Grassman cgrassman1...@gmail.com wrote:
I apologize if this has been discussed before. Since updating to the latest

If I am listening to a station and hit back arrow, I used to get a list of
my other stations and the option to create a new station. I could choose
another station and get to it (although sometimes it would go to the wrong
station, and I had to repeat the process, which was annoying, but not a deal
 breaker).
Now, when I go back, VO reads one station, whichever I happen to focus on
when I touch the screen, then the app freezes entirely. I have to play
around with the iPhone, hitting the Home button several times, or shutting
VO off and then on to get the iPhone working again, and Pandora must be
 closed and reopened.
 Anyone else?
 TIA.

This is an issue when you hold on to old models. As time goes on, you will find
that newer OS and new and updated aps will not run on your device.

Re: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

2015-04-16 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
Ugh! I'm really getting quite disappointed with Siri and, if he/she can't
manage those alarms now, well ...

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Maybe we need to start pressing in
on some of Siri's behaviour as I don't think it's really coming up to scratch.

Subject: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

  Hi,

Just thought I write about something I noticed recently although I can’t say
exactly when this started. I used to be able to set a reminder with SIRI in a
way that if I wanted to be reminded an hour or so before the appointment or
whatever I was reminding myself about, I would simply do it in two parts like
this:

Part 1: Set a reminder for Monday at 8 AM

SIRI would then say OK, just tell me what you want to be reminded about. I
would then do the second part like this example:

Part 2: Dentist appointment at 10 AM

SIRI would then confirm: Here is your reminder for Monday at 8 AM, it says:
Dentist appointment at 10 AM.

Now if I ask SIRI to create a reminder as in part 1 and then tell it what I
have above in part 2, the reply will be this:

Here is your reminder for Monday at 10 AM, it says “Dentist appointment”.

In other words it takes the time I want to hear the reminder before the event
and adds it to the time I want to be reminded at to create a reminder at the
time of the event. I find this very annoying since I always like to remind
myself a bit before and to have the actual time of my appointment or phone call
or whatever it is as part of the reminder.

Just now I wanted to set a reminder about a Skype call I have at 8 AM on
Monday. I tried to trick it into doing it by saying it differently like “Set a
reminder at 7 AM on Monday” and then “Skype call with Brian at 8 AM” or “Skype
call with Brian in 1 hour” or “I have a Skype call in 60 minutes with Brian”.
Each time it figured out that my Skype call was 1 hour from 7 AM and wanted to
create a reminder for 8 AM just called “Skype call with Brian”. I finally
tricked it by setting the reminder for 7:30 AM and saying “Skype call with
Brian in 30” and I guess not saying “30 minutes” confused it enough.

Do I have better things to do than to try and be smarter than SIRI? *smile*.

  Regards,

  Sieghard

Hello Everyone,

As I have posted, I support several people on both iOS and OSX as both
clients and friends.

One of my friends, a fellow VoiceOver user, until now, has fervently
refused
to setup either a Touch-ID or PIN on her iPhone 6, despite my suggestions
to
the contrary. She said she thought it was too much trouble.

Today, she called me and told me that she, upon returning from a short
vacation with her family, accidentally left her phone in her sister's
house,
approximately 800 miles away.

While her sister will FedEx the phone back to her, my friend was afraid
that
her sister would and, according to her, most likely did, snoop on her
phone.

She truly laments not having taken the time to setup her Touch-ID and
password.

I'm tellin' you, lock it down before it's too late (smile).

That should then copy them to iTunes before you try to sinc the new one.
If you have not done it yet, make sure before you connect your phone to

 to automatically sinc with iTunes.
That, and call Apple Accessibility to talk through the how to's.

 Hello Everyone,

As I have posted, I support several people on both iOS and OSX as both
 clients and friends.

One of my friends, a fellow VoiceOver user, until now, has fervently refused
to setup either a Touch-ID or PIN on her iPhone 6, despite my suggestions to
the contrary. She said she thought it was too much trouble.

Today, she called me and told me that she, upon returning from a short
vacation with her family, accidentally left her phone in her sister's house,
 approximately 800 miles away.

While her sister will FedEx the phone back to her, my friend was afraid that
her sister would and, according to her, most likely did, snoop on her phone.

She truly laments not having taken the time to setup her Touch-ID and
 password.

I'm tellin' you, lock it down before it's too late (smile).

I believe there are some folks on the list that have had experience using
the iGrill along with it's companion app. It was reported to be fairly
accessible a few years ago. They now have a newer model so I'm wondering if
it still continues to be accessible.

For those not familiar, the iGrill is a cooking thermometer that
communicates with an iPod or iPhone via Bluetooth allowing one to receive
alerts when whatever you are cooking reaches the desired temperature.

Any comments on this device welcomed.

Currently, just their Daredevil series, but description is coming soon to their
other original content--House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and others. I
don't have the link, but if you find the Netflix blog, they describe their

Since the pass code feature was instituted, I did not do this step because
if the phone talks people can hear me punch in my pass code if I am in a
public setting. Now, with touch ID, I have a pass code. I was dubious
about setting up touch ID because it would be just my luck with one wrong
move I would screw it up making my phone useless, but the process of setting
up a touch ID was so easy. With the touch ID and pass code I am very happy.

Re: Pandora Radio Issue since latest iOs update: anyone else?

2015-04-16 Thread Tom Lange
Hi. Yes, Pandora Radio is well and truly screwed up. Though I've had some
luck with Pandora support in the past when there was an accessibility issue, it
seems that accessibility has been allowed to slip, and this latest release is
the final straw for me. I can't navigate in the station list without the app
freezing, and I refuse to put up with that nonsense. I'll switch over to anoth
streaming app that works at least halfway decently until Pandora's overhauled.
In the interim, I'd advise people to stay away from the latest update or avoid
it altogether if contemplating installing Pandora for the first time.

Now, when I go back, VO reads one station, whichever I happen to focus on

The same thing happened to me. In order to download I had to do a combination
flick and slide motion which eventually brought up what I would have been used
to seeing if things would have been normal. This isn't intuitive, because a
person would've had to think to try this in order to get the update process
started, which shouldn't have been necessary when it wasn't before.

you did. I exited the screen, came back in and found the download button,

I think Apple Accessibility definitely needs to look into this, so I'm going to

Hey guys,

OK, i don't know whether i should be concerned or what, but i have never seen
this before. I went to settings, and general, and software update to go get
the new 8.3.
When i clicked software update, i flicked right, it said software update
heading, then i flicked once more, and all i heard was a click sound, then if i
flicked again i heard the bong which means you're at the end of where you can
go. I'd enver had this happen before. In order to get to the download of the
IOS, i had to go all over the screen to find the button to click on. This is a
concern, as this has never happened before. Any ideas, could something be
wrong?

RE: Setting reminders with SIRI has become less useful

2015-04-16 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi, While I have at least solved the Siri reminder for me, see my last email on
this, I do find that Siri is becoming less useful. More and more, I use Google.
Obviously, Google won’t open apps for me, set alarms, etc., but for non-device
specific things I want to know, Google is now more often able to answer my
questions. I find that sometimes Siri will, but the way you have to ask her
something can sometimes seem rather picky. Example. During the NCAA basketball
tournament, I wanted to know when the Wisconsin Badger game with Kentucky was
on. So I asked, “What time to the Wisconsin Badgers play Kentucky today?” She
didn’t know. I thought I remembered the time, so I asked, “Who is playing
basketball at 8:15 PM today?” She said, “Wisconsin is playing at 8:15 today.”
Now, I ask you, how silly is that? So since she knew the answer to that and not
to when the badgers were playing, she knew half the answer I needed. So, I have
now started referring to her as Siri half wit. The one good thing about Siri
these days is that Apple allows Google to be put on the IDevice.

Come on Apple, it’s not that you can’t do it. Siri used to be better. What goes
here?

*smile*.

Regards,

Sieghard

Only the last few have the audio description available on my app on my iPhone
6. If available, you just click on language and swipe right to hear language
choices. Among French, German, and Spanish, is now English audio described. I
hope the rest of the series shows up with description as time goes by.

Currently, just their Daredevil series, but description is coming soon to their
other original content--House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, and others. I
don't have the link, but if you find the Netflix blog, they describe their
plans for this service. As of right now, it sounds quite promising.

Dear all. I used to listen to ESPN on my apple tv till soccer world cup. I
didn't need ESPN after that for a long while. Now when I try it I can just not
find it. The number of chanels has doubled off late, but why did ESPN have to
go? Can someone please confirm if they are not able to find it too? I am
talking about the US region. If it is just my apple tv, can someone suggest
what I can do to get it back?

Thanks in anticipation.

Hi,

I just checked and I still have ESPN on my Apple TV and I am able to access

access ESPN and I just rebooted the Apple TV which solved the issue.

Hope that helps,

Re: Netflix question I do not have a TV but I do have a computer can I use Netflix on the computer or on my iPad or on my iPhone without a TV?

2015-04-16 Thread Alex Hall
Not at this time, to the best of my knowledge. For the moment, though, only
Daredevil is described, and no other shows have been announced as having
descriptions yet. I imagine, as the feature slowly comes to more and more
offerings, Netflix might offer a way to find content that includes description.
Or, they might be aiming to offer this through their entire range of shows and
movies, and so searching for it will eventually bemuse pointless since nearly
everything will have it. Just my thoughts, but the bottom line answer to your
question is: not yet.

Re: iOS 8.3 Constantly Refreshing

2015-04-16 Thread Dave

Hi, i also had this problem.

I found the problem, was with the charging cable.

both my charging cables, that i had been using successfully for well over a
year before updating, suddenly stopped working correctly.

The Donging sound, was my phone connecting and disconnecting.

I had to buy 2 new cables, and that solved the problem.

you can test this, by looking at your status bar, every time it makes that
sound.

Howdy folks,
Ever since updating to 8.3 my phone every 10 minutes or so makes the refresh
sound and the little bonk noise like there’s nothing to refresh.
This happens when i’m using it, while it’s locked and i’m not using it, and
when I’m listening to anything. It doesn’t matter what app i’m using and
killing everything in the app switcher doesn’t make a difference. I haven’t
seen this mentioned anywhere else and I’m wondering if anyone else has.

Thanks for any input.

Re: I'm Tellin' You, Lock It Down

2015-04-16 Thread Wayne Merritt
For those that are hesitant to enter their passcodes in public areas,
you could also enter them with either Braille screen input or
handwriting input. I use handwriting a lot to enter my passcode and
mostly get the code right on the first try. At least with handwriting,
each number is not announced when I write it in. I have never used
Braille screen input, but it probably works the same way. I do wish I
knew of a gesture to erase the last thing entered with handwriting,
like you can do with braille input, but oh well. I've got several
chances to enter the passcode in correctly so it doesn't bother me.

Braille screen input, but it probably works the same way. I do wish I
knew of a gesture to erase the last thing entered with handwriting,
like you can do with braille input, but oh well. I've got several
chances to enter the passcode in correctly so it doesn't bother me.

DOKY iPhone App: Non-Visual Reading and Editing Structured Documents

2015-04-16 Thread Andy Baracco

FYI!
DOKY iPhone App: Non-Visual Reading and Editing Structured Documents

In the frame of his Ph.D. project Martin Dorigo developed a novel system
for
reading and editing structured documents in a non-visual way on mobile
and
wearable devices. This App is called DOKY and it is available for Apple
iPhone, iPad and Android devices!

DOKY provides you amongst others the following 3 unique key features:

 1. A fast overview over the document structure
 2. A fast skim and scan over the document content
 3. Move, remove and insert elements and text

He would like to invite you to test his system. It will take you 15
minutes
only:

 1. Please go to the Apple AppStore or Android PlayStore and search
for
DOKY (written with Y).
Or use the following links:
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/doky/id975186203
http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.dorigo.doky
 2. Install and start the DOKY app
 3. Follow the spoken instructions

In order to reach significant results the participation of a lot of
people
is required. May I ask you to forward this message to many others.

Please test DOKY until April 30th 2015. With your valuable assistance
the
reading and editing of structured documents will be revolutionized!

Thank you so much and kind regards

RE: Netflix US Canada Blog: Netflix Begins Audio Description for Visually Impaired

2015-04-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Does this require a third generation Apple TV? I thought somebody said one had
to push and hold the enter or select button on the Apple TV remote to bring up
a menu with various controls, one of which should be language. I have a second
generation Apple TV and pressing and holding that button while Dare Devils is
playing seems to do nothing. I also tried to push and hold the Play/Pause
button and nothing seems to happen and of course pressing and holding the
back/menu button brings up the menu where I can turn Voiceover On or Off and so
on.

Good point, I guess you would need the original remote to enable and setup a
bluetooth keyboard. The Remote app, however, should be able to control your

Re: I'm Tellin' You, Lock It Down

2015-04-16 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I think if anyone is worried about this then they should definitely be
careful. I find I'm quick enough with either the hand writing mode or
even just entering my passcode with the numeric keypad, that I doubt
anyone can pick up my passcode. Of course, if someone is hovering over
me often while I'm entering my passcode then I think I'd be suspicious.
Of course, someone would also have to get their hands on my iPhone even
if they were able to figure out my passcode.

each number is not announced when I write it in. I have never used
Braille screen input, but it probably works the same way. I do wish I
knew of a gesture to erase the last thing entered with handwriting,

chances to enter the passcode in correctly so it doesn't bother me.

Re: Pandora Radio Issue since latest iOs update: anyone else?

2015-04-16 Thread Tom Lange
Hi all. After posting on this thread early this morning, I had a look at
Pandora reviews in the app store. I found that the collection of reviews was
a mixed bag; some were stellar, some were scathing. As expected, some people
absolutely love Pandora and a while back I would have counted myself in that
group. But there are a number of folks who have gripes about its interface, as
I do, and, there are some who wrote reviews to fuss about significant
degradation of the app's performance as well as significant degradation of
phone responsiveness overall when Pandora's running in the background. Very
interesting indeed. By the way, none of those negative reviews about
performance degradation mentioned VoiceOver, so I presume that a goodly number
of sighted folks out there who aren't running VoiceOver or Zoom are having this
issue. So, lest we succumb to temptation to kvetch about how we VoiceOver
users got screwed with the latest Pandora update, there seems to be ample
evidence that the app has become increasingly buggy and glitchy and we would-be
kvetchers ain't alone in the wilderness fussing about how Pandora's performance
of late really sucks, with or without VoiceOver. .

Now, when I go back, VO reads one station, whichever I happen to focus on

This is an issue when you hold on to old models. As time goes on, you will find
that newer OS and new and updated aps will not run on your device.

Re: number of new updates in the app stor under the eye phone 4s are no longer spoken by vo.

2015-04-16 Thread BHAVESH PATEL
Hi Guys,

When I was on IOS7, when I used to receive call, I used to perform a 2
finger swipe up in order to listen to the caller ID. Now since I
updated to IOS8.3, it no longer works. neither the swipe left or right
work. in have to explore the screen and find out whats there on the
screen. Any solution for this? I am finding this really annoying as
when we receive call, we hardly have time to explore screen.
Thanks.

 Hi,
It did the same on my 4S. I just went into the app store and the updates
eventually cane through. I guess it's just a case of checking periodically.
No deal breaker really, just a bit annoying. ☺️
 Carla.
