Re: repairing my Braillenote Apex with my 6+

2015-05-31 Thread Eileen

Just to add to the last post, the pair button is right under the battery
percent indicator on the status area at the top. Also, I change the typing mode
to standard, so I can perform a sllit double tap to enter the 4 zeros and to
activate the pair button. You don't have very much time to get this done, so
that's why I get one index finger very close to the pair button and use a split
double tap. Usually, I can pair the Apex in 1-2 tries. HTH.

Re: mlb app issue

2015-05-31 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I wouldn't call it often, but a little more than occasionally. The thing
is, it is happening when I listen on my pc, too, maybe slightly more often
than with MLB At Bat, so I attribute it to some issue with their service.

I've been using the mlb app for several years with virtually no problem.
Last year I don't think I ever experienced a drop out of the radio feed. I
listed to the sf giants (every game).
This year I'm experiencing quite a few times when I loose the feed. If I
switch to another station then return to the sf feed the feed seems to work
fine.

Wondering if anyone else is loosing a feed quite often.
Thanks,
Don

Hi, no, the pair button should be at the top right of the screen. Keep in mind
with the 6+ though, that the screen is taller, which means you have to go up
a little higher to find it.

Hi Larry. I don't think that's outrageous. I think flooding them with
complaints is completely unnecessary. If they did put captions in their
sign in, get an app like a TapTapSee, save the image to the camera roll,
and used to Pepsi or some other app like it to give you the caption.
There's really no need to say we should flood them with complaints,
especially since there seems to be accessible solutions.

Re: Described Audio

2015-05-31 Thread Brent Harding
I think the described shows on ABC are mostly limited to Shark Tank, and the
various commedies such as Fresh off The Boat, Blackish, Nashville, How to Get
Away With Murder, among possible others I've missed. I don't think American
Crime, Secrets and Lies, or Grays Anatomy aired described even on TV, but I
know in the App that Grays doesn't have description because I checked it out

Somehow my BrailleNote Apex got unpaired from my iphone 6+, and I don

T seem to be able to find the pair button on the phone after I put in the
code. I've looked everywhere on the screen. Have there been changes with
the iphone 6 and 6+?

A Very Excellent Source for Free RingTones, Sounds, and Notifications

2015-05-31 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Recently, I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S 6. While it can never take the

One thing I absolutely adore about all of the Galaxy products, especially on
the new S 6, is the number of native RingTones, sounds, and notifications
included with the devices.

A quick Google search will turn up many sites where the stock RingTones for
many popular Android Smartphones have been ripped and placed in a Zip file,
ready to be used by anyone.

The primary reason why these RingTones are made readily available is so that
those who wish to create what are known as custom ROMS can more closely
mirror the native manufacturers OS with regard to basic functionality.

Okay, okay; too much information, right?

The following is text that I posted to an Android list containing the link
to the RingTones, sounds and notifications for the S 6 which, you may use on
your iOS device.

Mark

Download The Samsung Galaxy S 6 and 6 Edge Stock RingTones, Sounds, and
Notifications

For a while now I've been using a text message alert on my iPhone 6 Plus
that I ripped from a Galaxy Note 2.

There are several ringtones and/or notifications on my Galaxy S 6 that I
want to use on my 6 Plus, as well.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that all the hard work had already
been done for me as the S 6 and 6 Edge stock sounds are available on The
Android Soul.com website.

All they ask is that one gives them credit for the Zip file when sharing the
link or when using the sounds in a custom ROM.

So, for those of you who want to sprinkle a little Galaxy seasoning into
your Apple sauce (or anything else for that matter), I offer the following
two links:

1.
The direct download link to the Zip file containing all of the stock sounds
for Samsung Galaxy S 6 and 6 Edge:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/downloads/file/S6Rings.zip

2.
The URL to the Android Soul.com site which contains the link listed above:
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/download-samsung-galaxy-s6-ringtones-74737/

Please note that all of the files are in their original format said format
being .ogg

In order to be used in iOS as ringtones or notifications, assuming you do
not use iTunes in the conversion process, they will first have to be
converted to .m4a and then subsequently renamed to .m4r.

Enjoy,

Mark

Fantastical - Adding Contacts to Appointments

2015-05-31 Thread Richard Petty
I would like to add contacts to appointments. When I attempt this, I am taken
to what appears to be my contact list, but all the entries are dimmed and
cannot be selected. Does anyone know why this is the case and if there's a
solution. Thanks.

Re: Accessibility of Mint

2015-05-31 Thread Tom Frank
I use Mint almost daily and it works quite well with voice over. Obviously, the
graphs won’t work but you can get a pretty good overview of your finances.

The alerts once saved me $1600 worth of airline tickets from Montreal to London
on my credit card. Mint alerted me that I had spent over my normal monthly
average on travel. I contacted the credit card company immediately and they
removed the charges. Yes, I like Mint.

RE: Bizarre issue re. mBraille as a third-party keyboard

2015-05-31 Thread Ron Pelletier
Hi Richard,

I have the same problem with the 3 finger swipe left and have reported to the
developer but no fix yet even if there has been an update since I reported it.
I guess it might be in the next update.

If you are trying to put direct input on, it is dot 6 not dot 3.

If you only paid $29.99 you don't have full keyboard I bought mBraille at
$29.99 when it first came out and then finally paid $14.99 to get both Dropbox
and third party keyboard support.

It works great on messages, mail, and pretty much everywhere else I have tried
it. At least as long as I switch back to the standard keyboard with a three
finger swipe right when I am done. Things are a bit odd if I just dismiss the
keyboard with the three finger swipe left.

Hi all,
I'm running into something that strikes me as odd when trying to use mBraille
as a third-party keyboard. As a caveat, I'm running IOS8.3 on an iPhone 6 and
have enabled full access using the full, paid version of the app.

I only seem to be able to use mBraille as a third-party keyboard if I access
functions through the app first. For instance, if I open messages in order to
reply to someone and select mBraille as the keyboard of choice, basically
nothing happens. I can't activate the braille keyboard no matter what I do. It
clicks, but nothing is inputted. I tried holding down what should be the dot 3
and swiping right, but it doesn't seem to recognize the dots. The only button I
can find is, mercifully, the one to return to my primary keyboard. If I open
mBraille and then select messages, though, then everything works as expected.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but are we not supposed to be able to summon
mBraille functionality from within whatever app we choose now as opposed to
going through mBraille itself first?

If anyone has an idea to either correct something I'm doing wrong or to address
the problem, I'd be really grateful.

Thanks,
Michelle

Hi Larry. I don't think that's outrageous. I think flooding them with
complaints is completely unnecessary. If they did put captions in their sign

Pepsi or some other app like it to give you the caption. There's really no need

Re: Bizarre issue re. mBraille as a third-party keyboard

2015-05-31 Thread Richard Turner
I thinkthere are two more things to try.
First, is the orientation locked? If not, try locking orientation.
The other thing is try going into Email and start a message, using mbraille as
the third party keyboard, turn direct input off, then without doing anything
else, hit your home button andmessages and either compose a new one or better,
reply to one.
My guess is you will find that mBraille is the active keyboard and when you
start writing you will hear what you type, depending on ymbraille speech
settings anuway.
Direct input seems to behave differently in messages.

Richard

RE: Bizarre issue re. mBraille as a third-party keyboard

2015-05-31 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi Richard,

Yes, I am using away mode, and indeed voiceover does say mBraille as soon as I
select the keyboard from within some other app. However when I go to type,
nothing happens. I hear clicks when I touch certain parts of the screen, but
when I try to enter braille characters, there’s no response from mBraille. In
fact on two occasions voiceover has interpreted my efforts to type as a
three-finger double tap and muted the speech. :p Doing a three-finger swipe
also doesn’t get me back to the keyboard. I can do that by holding the phone
back in portrait mode and flicking right once.

This, of course, is what happens when I try to use mBraille indirectly. If I
enter mBraille itself and then use it to launch something like messages and
mail, then third-party keyboarding works adequately. In those contexts, I’m
able to enable direct input without a problem.

I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the program, not forgetting to
restore purchases and make sure full access was enabled. No dice.

As mentioned before, I’m using in iPhone 6 running ios8.3.

Thanks,

Michelle

Re: Using iTunes for Windows to Sync an App to iPhone 5

2015-05-31 Thread Craig Werner
Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread, especially to
Richard Turner and Alan Lemley who provided helpful information in
solving my problem. If you want to copy an app from your iTunes for
Windows computer to your iPhone, and you wish to remain in close touch
with the iTunes interface, do remember to be patient while the
treeview containing your apps loads. To find this treeview, tab to
the button indicating your iDevice name (such as "iPhone"), and
activate it. Then, tab until you hear your screen reader say
"Treeview." Wait a generous number of seconds before trying to
navigate this view. You will want to press "down arrow" until you
hear "Apps." Then, press the "tab" key until you come to the list of
apps. Arrow down until you hear the app you want copied, and make
sure its checkbox is checked before tabbing to the "Apply" button to
start the sync.

RE: Email lists from A to Z Contacts

2015-05-31 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Paul,

The developer also said he is going to make the Email list creation even easier
in an update.

The app is perfectly usable as a free app with the ads, but I personally think
it is worth supporting the developer for the $1.99 to remove ads.
Plus, I think there is a little more screen made available to the app that way.

Enjoy,
Richard

Hello everybody. As I stated earlier, I choose to use native apps whenever
possible. In this case, however, there is no way to create email lists from
contact groups with the native contacts app. You can create groups from OSX or
via Microsoft Outlook and synchronization with iTunes. However, you can't
create email lists with your groups. This app is promising when I upgrade to an
iPhone 6. I'll be able to do that in October.
Thanks for sharing this information.

I just learned something else about A to Z Contacts.
After you have created your group, if you go beyond the spot where you would
send a group text or group email, there is an item called Email Lists.
If you double tap that you can have A to Z contacts create an Email list inside
your regular contacts so that you can now send Emails to that group from within
the native Email App.
That feature alone has me going to go and pay to remove ads plus a little more.
This is great!
Richard

RE: Bizarre issue re. mBraille as a third-party keyboard

2015-05-31 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Richard,

I purchased what was advertised as the full mBraille program yesterday. It cost
about $45 Canadian and definitely includes dropbox support. At that price,
surely third-party keyboard permissions are included too?

Thanks,
Michelle

RE: Email lists from A to Z Contacts

2015-05-31 Thread Paul Hunt

Indeed, MBraille (or Fleksy, or any other third-party keyboard) will
automatically vanish when you focus on an edit field. I imagine this is, as
Ilene suggested, a security measure. Braille screen input, though, will work,
and so long as you remember to switch to 6 dot mode, you can enter passwords
with no trouble. BSI is what I was using.

Hello,

I’ll try composing my thoughts here from my Mac. Because MBraille is a third

Re: FYI: iPod Touch 5 price drop

2015-05-31 Thread Alex Hall
Sorry guys, I think I messed up. I didn't check the link ahead of time; as it
turns out, that is for a refurb of the iPod Touch 5, not a price drop for a
*new* one. There's nothing wrong with refurbished units, of course, but this
isn't a true price drop, or an indication of any new products to come. Sorry
for not checking first.

Re: Bizarre issue re. mBraille as a third-party keyboard

2015-05-31 Thread Richard Turner
If you are trying to put direct input on, it is dot 6 not dot 3.
If you only paid $29.99 you don't have full keyboard I bought mBraille at
$29.99 when it first came out and then finally paid $14.99 to get both Dropbox
and third party keyboard support.
It works great on messages, mail, and pretty much everywhere else I have tried
it. At least as long as I switch back to the standard keyboard with a three
finger swipe right when I am done. Things are a bit odd if I just dismiss the
keyboard with the three finger swipe left.

Re: Unable to rename a folder on the iPhone

Hi Kimber.

I place and hold my finger on the folder I want to rename. VoiceOver will say,
"moving (name of folder)". I then do a single double-tap on the folder to open
it. The folder opens and VoiceOver says, "(name of folder) is editing.
Double-tap to edit". I then do a single finger double-tap to open the text box
and rename my folder. Hope this helps.

Bizarre issue re. mBraille as a third-party keyboard

2015-05-31 Thread Michelle McQuigge
Hi all,
I'm running into something that strikes me as odd when trying to use
mBraille as a third-party keyboard. As a caveat, I'm running IOS8.3 on an
iPhone 6 and have enabled full access using the full, paid version of the
app.

I only seem to be able to use mBraille as a third-party keyboard if I
access functions through the app first. For instance, if I open messages in
order to reply to someone and select mBraille as the keyboard of choice,
basically nothing happens. I can't activate the braille keyboard no matter
what I do. It clicks, but nothing is inputted. I tried holding down what
should be the dot 3 and swiping right, but it doesn't seem to recognize the
dots. The only button I can find is, mercifully, the one to return to my
primary keyboard. If I open mBraille and then select messages, though, then
everything works as expected.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding, but are we not supposed to be able to summon
mBraille functionality from within whatever app we choose now as opposed to
going through mBraille itself first?

If anyone has an idea to either correct something I'm doing wrong or to
address the problem, I'd be really grateful.

Thanks,
Michelle

Unable to rename a folder on the iPhone

2015-05-31 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi All,

I know I've successfully renamed folders in the past, but never under
iOS8. Now when I attempt to edit the text field where the folder name
is located, the only thing that happens is the folder closes and I am
returned to the home screen where the folder resides.

Am I missing a step, or is this a bug?

Thanks,
Kimber

FYI: iPod Touch 5 price drop

2015-05-31 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I just saw this tweet and thought someone might be interested. Remember that
this price cut may well signify a hardware update, so if you can, you should
probably wait until after WWDC to see what happens. Still, if you've been
wanting an iPod Touch and don't care that yours will be a model from a few
years ago, this is your chance. Prices now start at $149.
Apple Online store offering 5th gen iPod Touch with 16 GB for $149, 32 GB for

Subject: Using iTunes for Windows to Sync an App to iPhone 5

Hello, everyone.

I am trying to use iTunes 12.1x for Windows with Window-Eyes 9.1 to
sync an old version of an app to my iPhone 5. I used to be able to do
this, but with the current software versions, I can't figure out how
to navigate to the app list and get the "remove" and "install" buttons
to work so that the app will install to the iPhone. Is this operation
possible with the latest Window-Eyes and iTunes versions?

Thank you for all help.

Craig

Re: In iOS Calendar for adding a future event, what's the best way when the event is several months in the future?

2015-05-31 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
Richard,

Again, star!

Thanks so much! I've got it working well now. I think the confusion came when
I was writing in braille and wanted to edit what I'd written, not realising
quite what was happening in the calendar's smart work. Now I have it!

Anyone not knowing yet which calendar to go for, I'd give this a go! If I
eventually succeed, I reckon you will, easily!

I have that same version, Version 2.2.7 (416).
If you write the sentence with the subject as the first word, like "dentist
on november 20, 2015 at 6 Am," it should work.

Anyway, if you or Alex, or anyone else, are able to give me any feedback,

Fantastical 2 is the updated version from a couple years ago at least.
I don't remember if I had to buy the new version.
First, why don't you go into Fantastical and double tap on settings and
scroll to the last item which says About Fantastical and double check which
version you have.
Then you could write the developer if it isn't Fantastical 2 to ask your
questions since I can't remember what changed.

I have not used the native calendar app for a long time.
I opened it and it proved to me why Fantastical 2 is a superior
calendar.
Try this with the native app:
  1. Get to your desired month.
  2.
Make sure where it says "list button" it is not selected. If it says
selected, double tap and it will not say selected.
  3. Find your day and double tap.
  4. Turn the rotor to events and flick up or down.
If that doesn't help, buy Fantastical 2 which will access all your
events from the native calendar, etc.
That is my very biased and jaded opinion.
  Feel free to ignore me.
I'm spending too much time fighting with other technology today, so
probably have a more negative reaction to the Calendar than it deserves.

  Richard

I go to the area you suggested. VO speaks No Events. I flick back

Still stumped.

How to be safe from iOS flaw that crashes iPhone by a single message

2015-05-31 Thread Dr. Harshit Jaithwar
Apple's iMessage platform has been subject of a new bug that shuts
down your entire iPhone after receiving a particular message.

The message, whose second half is in Arabic, can send your phone into
a reboot no matter what task it is performing -- it's proved very
frustrating for
some users and it's not certain what the long term effects are.

Here's the fix: head into your Settings app, then the Notifications
tab, Messages and then switch off the slider called "show on local
screen and under
"alert style when unlocked" choose "none".

It's a pretty simple fix but it means if you're sent any more pesky
iMessages you're not going to be sent into the reboot again.

This is the text of the message

Over and over

A bug that means a specific string of text can completely crash
iPhones has led people to take extreme measures to keep their phones
safe.

A problem with the way that iOS handles notifications means that if
people are sent the code -- which includes strange words and unusual
symbols and Arabic
characters -- their phone grinds to a halt and restarts itself, before
becoming unuseable. Apple has said that it is aware of the problem and
is working
on a fix, but until then users have been forced to take the problem
into their own hands.

The most dramatic way of avoiding the problem is to turn off
notifications entirely for the Messages app.

That is done by heading to Settings and choosing Notifications and
then Messages, and swiping the toggle button so that "Show on Lock
Screen" is off and
the alert style when unlocked is set to "none". Messages will still
show up in the notification centre and as a small badge on the app on
the home screen,
but won't be able to load up as banners and shut down the phone.

The problem also seems to hit the Apple Watch. Turning off
notifications in the same way seems to remedy that.

An easier and less dramatic way of avoiding some of the chance of it
happening is to filter out unknown senders. That can be done from the
Messages options
in the Settings app.

Turning that setting on means that if a stranger sends a text, it is
sent into its own conversation and doesn't bring up an alert. That
means that people
who aren't in your contact book won't be able to make the bug happen --
you'll still get alerts from your friends, for better or for worse.

If the problem has already happened, it can be got around by either
sending a message to the person who you received the problem one from,
or sending yourself
a text. But since the Messages app is broken by the bug, users have to
take a roundabout route to do either.

You can either ask Siri to send a text, or do so from the share sheets
that can be found in most apps, such as Photos. It doesn't matter
what's said in
the text, as long as it's sent to yourself or the offending "effective
power" message sender.

Once that's done, the Messages app should come back to life and you
can head in and delete the conversation.

Apple has said that it is aware of the problem and is working on a fix.

Hundreds of forum users are reporting the issue. JoeyTheBoey on Reddit
said, "I have an un jailbroken iPhone 6 and it resprings my phone, but
only if I'm
not in the messages app, then it will show the message notification
badge when I get back in."

Jjc123cj on Reddit said, "Don't test this on your iPhone 6! I sent it
to myself and now my messaging app crashes when I try to open it ):"

Apple News on Twitter has spoken to Apple's senior engineers who
admitted they know there is a problem and said that they are hard at
work trying to fix
it.
