Re: Air drop

2015-08-03 Thread Chris
Hi I don't use it "yet" and will stress why in a moment. Suffice to say
it allows you to share information with devices nearby. Now here's why I
don't use it. Currently only one device supports Airdrop, the iPad Mini
2. But this month I will be upgrading my iPhone from a 4s to a 5s. This
will mean I will have full access to not only Airdrop but other features
as well.

Dice World!

2015-08-03 Thread Chris
Hi all Hannah and I need a bit of help with Dice World! We are playing
Farkle against each other. The problem is when it's my turn I can't do
anything as all the numbers and the roll button are dimmed. The bank
button isn't, but double tapping on that doesn't do anything either. I
tried creating a new game with the same result. Please can you come up
with anything? This would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Docking iPhone and iPad all the time. Is it safe?

2015-08-03 Thread Christopher Chaltain
No, I don't recall Terry'spost, but I think we're saying the same thing.
The iPhone switches to a trickle charge when the battery is getting
close to being fully charged to protect the battery. Like I said, this
is why you won't always see your battery charge to 100%.

Hi all, Christopher Chaltain, please correct me if I'm wrong but are you

Often you can upgrade from within the app itself.

Try Checking under settings for the app to see if there is an upgrade option.

fb update - the new feature add link is inaccessible

2015-08-03 Thread Davy Cuppens

Hi folks

if you add a new thread with the fb app, now eventually you have the
possibility to add a link, video or article from a search box list. That is
very nice but if you want to check the search results you cannot control the
elements, the only thing I hear in the list is watch which can be another
word in the Englisch version of the app but I only know the Dutch
translation of the word "bekijk".

For the rest, the app seems to work great.

This morning I went to the app store and looked at a podcast I wanted. When
I first saw it listed, it gave me the option to purchase the premium
version. I did not do that but instead, I downloaded the free version. Once
in the app, I saw hundreds of other episodes that I could only listen to if
I had the premium version.

I went back to the app store and found it listed in my purchases. It
no longer gave me the option to purchase the premium version. I then deleted
the podcast from the phone and did another search for it. Perhaps, it knew
that I'd already looked at it and downloaded it, because I no longer saw the
option to purchase the premium version.

What am I missing here in this scenario?

Re: Ear pods

2015-08-03 Thread Daniel Miller
I would. I never buy anything apple-related from 3rd parties, unless I
absolutely have to. I think the only thing I’ve gotten by Apple from a 3rd
party is an adaptor for an ethernet port for my macbook air, and my most recent
iPad Air 2.
The EarPods are $29, but are worth every penny.

Ear pods

2015-08-03 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,

I apologize for sending a one line thank you to the list earlier. I have
been looking at amazon for these Ear pods and it seems as if many customers
are claiming in their reviews that the sellers from which they purchased did
not sell them 100% genuine Apple products even though they claimed that is
what they were indeed selling. So, if this is the product I am going to need
for the individual in question who is asking for this product to be
purchased I will take Sieghard Weitzel's always wise technical advice and
look to Apple for the direct purchase.

Howdy list,

Are any of you aware of a list for job seekers for the blind? I am in search of
any info that will help me get back to work.
I am open to any suggestions. Feel free to write me off list as well.
I have an extensive background in sales, customer service, etc. I have also
built databases with Excel and that sort of thing.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated, Thanks.

RE: another headset question

2015-08-03 Thread Merv Keck
If you knew what kind of crap I have gone through with headsets lately you
would not be giving me grief about saying thanks. This headset is not for me.
It is for someone else who has gone through a dozen headsets in the last few
years either by losing or breaking them and I can say thanks out of a profound
relief that these are for once inexpensive and not a set of $90 headset that
will get lost or broken in a month. Any time you feel the need to moderate that
go for it.

If you do want to buy a pair, one of the easiest ways is probably via the Apple
Store app on your phone especially since they usually cost the same on Amazon.
OK, so this is basically a one-liner as well, but “Thanks” as an entire
separate message *smile*. Maybe it’s a good thing in this case the moderators

Subject: another headset question

Since we have established that the bluez 2 don’t do well for actual calling, is
there a good cheap headset with microphone even not Bluetooth that I could get
just for this purpose? Then, I can use the Aftershokz for everything else but
a better one just for calling that works, and for SIRI too. I am not crazy
about earbuds, but if that’s the best I can get, I will. Another Bluetooth
headset would be expensive, and I really don’t want to spend the money on one
if the bluez 2 work fine for me except for when I call someone, so would like
to find something cheaper that I can use just for that.

If you do want to buy a pair, one of the easiest ways is probably via the Apple
Store app on your phone especially since they usually cost the same on Amazon.
OK, so this is basically a one-liner as well, but “Thanks” as an entire
separate message *smile*. Maybe it’s a good thing in this case the moderators
seem to be so absent lately.

RE: another headset question

2015-08-03 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Kimber,

Not sure if you knew this, but if you have Apple Care I believe you can get two
free earpod replacements. If you are near an Apple Store you can just go in and
they will give you a new set on the spot otherwise you can call Apple and once
they established you have Apple Care, they will send you a new set. You They do
ask for the old pair to be returned back to them in the same packaging that the
new earpods come in, all you have to do is remove the label and a return label
is underneath, and you do have to give them a credit card which they
preauthorize for what the earpods cost and should you not return the defective
ones, they will charge you. The same applies to the Lightning cable which comes
with the phone. I just did this not too long ago and as always the service was
great.

Sieghard

I have to agree with this assessment. I have several earbuds/earphones which
I've bought over the years -- everything from the cheapest of the cheapest to a
set of Bose noise-cancelling earbuds which I use for serious listening. But for
everyday use like audiobook listening and phone calls, I reach most often for
the apple earpods. In fact I like them so well that I just replaced the ones
that came with my phone and no longer worked in one ear.

I realize that earphone preferences are about as subjective as TTS voice

Re: another headset question

2015-08-03 Thread Kimber Gardner
I have to agree with this assessment. I have several earbuds/earphones
which I've bought over the years -- everything from the cheapest of
the cheapest to a set of Bose noise-cancelling earbuds which I use for
serious listening. But for everyday use like audiobook listening and
phone calls, I reach most often for the apple earpods. In fact I like
them so well that I just replaced the ones that came with my phone and
no longer worked in one ear.

RE: another headset question

I find the Apple Earpods which come with the iPhone to be perfect for calls and
even for listening to audio books. I do understand that apparently some people
say they don’t fit them well and fall out easily, but I am fortunately one of
those where this is not a problem at all. If I put them in even just lightly
they stay put quite well and I can still hear I would say 90 to 95%

Of what is going on around me. I have a pair of $200 Hi-Fi headphones which I
use occasionally if I want to listen to music and want best possible quality
and while they have a remote and microphone, people tell me they don’t sound as
good for phone calls than the $30 Apple Earpods.

a better one just for calling that works, and for SIRI too. I am not crazy

 Hi, Johnathon,

Actually, I'd like to correct you on one thing. If you recall, there's a
bug in iOS 8 where if you're correcting a spelling mistake you made, and
you insert a letter that's also a contraction, the letter would get
expanded into said contraction. That's been fixed, as far as I could tell.

of using a Braille display at present. The time lag of the display is
one of the things I am passionate about and another is the way in
which the cursor appears to be unable to follow the Braille very
accurately and I am not always sure exactly where I am placed. I
shouldn't have to pick up my phone to check this out.

On a general issue and not just looking at what's to come, I'd also be
interested in any settings you have that make the lagging less for
you, together with which display you're using. Perhaps everyone has
"given up" with Braille input in this way now. We shouldn't have to,
though, and of course, deaf-blind friends still need this, even if we
can perhaps manage in other ways.

If Jonathan Moson is reading this, Jonathan, has Apple stopped
listening to your comments on using Braille displays? What exactly do
you think needs to be done to make working with Braille displays a
real pleasure and enhance life once again?

  Hi, Johnathon,

Actually, I’d like to correct you on one thing. If you recall, there’s a bug
in iOS 8 where if you’re correcting a spelling mistake you made, and you insert
a letter that’s also a contraction, the letter would get expanded into said
contraction. That’s been fixed, as far as I could tell.

Hi,

So long as I can use the edit function, I make use of the onboard
dictionary, it is very good and VO friendly. I also have an Italian dictionary
option, also good! I think I am remembering aright, this came with the ios and
didn't cost anything extra.

While it was Richard Petty who recommended it, I did a little research
because of Mark's question about why it costs so much.
The hard cover print edition is $41.83 on Amazon.
Its shipping weight is 7.5 pounds.
 It is 2112 pages.
This app says it contains everything that is in the print edition.
About 20 years ago, Oxford English Dictionary 2nd edition that was 21
print volumes, was about $900 in print, became available for $130 on a CD
 Rom.
Granted the OED 2nd edition had over six hundred thousand words, the cost
 of dictionaries have dropped dramatically.
What you are paying for is the linguistic expertees that goes into the
research on the history and usage of the words.
According to Mr. Petty, the American Heritage app is quite accessible with
 VoiceOver.

 Just my two cents worth.

Re: APPLE SUPPORT FOR BRAILLE

2015-08-03 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi, Johnathon,

Actually, I’d like to correct you on one thing. If you recall, there’s a bug in
iOS 8 where if you’re correcting a spelling mistake you made, and you insert a
letter that’s also a contraction, the letter would get expanded into said
contraction. That’s been fixed, as far as I could tell.

 Hi all,

I know you can't really disclose Apple's plans, as it were, for IOS9, but
I wonder if any of you testers can assure me you use the Braille
facilities and are looking to iron out some of the abysmal drawbacks of
using a Braille display at present. The time lag of the display is one of
the things I am passionate about and another is the way in which the
cursor appears to be unable to follow the Braille very accurately and I am
not always sure exactly where I am placed. I shouldn't have to pick up my
 phone to check this out.

On a general issue and not just looking at what's to come, I'd also be
interested in any settings you have that make the lagging less for you,
together with which display you're using. Perhaps everyone has "given up"
with Braille input in this way now. We shouldn't have to, though, and of
course, deaf-blind friends still need this, even if we can perhaps manage
 in other ways.

If Jonathan Moson is reading this, Jonathan, has Apple stopped listening
to your comments on using Braille displays? What exactly do you think
needs to be done to make working with Braille displays a real pleasure and
 enhance life once again?

RE: Not getting notivications on my watch

2015-08-03 Thread Amy Ruel
Lol, gotta love it!

I have now finally gotten messages to be displayed, although they don’t delete
when I clear them from the watch, making it necessary to then review and clear
them on the phohe. An annoyance for sure.

I don’t get mail pushed to my watch at all unless the app is open on my iPhone.

I guess I would rather have my situation than yours. I have over 200 apps on my
phone and it took some time to get most of them not to push

To the watch.

Le me know how you make out.

Hi Amy, I'll swap. Lol. I'm having exactly the opposite problem. I want only
essential notifications on my Watch, such as messages, VIP mail, and a small
number of other apps. I have a very, very large number of apps on my iPhone. I
went into Notifications in the Watch app and turned off just about everything,
but despite this, everything is pushing to my Watch.

I've even reset, and set up as a new watch. No dice.

I suppose as a last resort, I may have to set up my iPhone as new and see if
that resolves it.

Any suggestions?

Sadly, the only app I'm aware of that will do this is the official Twitter app.
Or you can set up Twitter's SMS service and get tweets from a list of people

Re: bluez 2 by Aftershokz

2015-08-03 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Ok, so if the Bluez2 aren’t any good for calling, is there any other Bluetooth
headset that works well with all aspects of Blindsquare? My beloved Plantronics
Voyager legend is good when it comes to calling but it doesn’t work with the
Audio menu of Blindsquare, so what should i use instead?
