Keith,

The message that you copied is one that I posted to the Jaws for Windows
mailing list, earlier today.

As I wrote in my original post, I find the Touch Cursor very useful with regard
to iTunes for Windows.

HI,

This is being copied from a message on another list. Curious to learn if it
helps.
Not able to check at the moment, or even later today.
Thanks, Keith

Copied from another list:

I find that with the latest version of Jaws, when it comes to the latest
version of iTunes, the Jaws Touch Cursor works very well on my Desktop PC.

Please remember that one does not need an actual touch screen in order to use
the Jaws Touch Cursor feature.

Re: How do I set up a sound bar?

2016-08-31 Thread Monica Jones
Unfortunately, most of the customer service people at Wal-Mart know next to
nothing about anything they sell. I'm glad you found something at Best Buy.
Most of the time I find them to be very knowledgeable. If you buy it from
Wal-Mart, you'd better know exactly what you are looking for. Also, you'd
best know what questions you need to ask, but even then, they will just look
at you and say, uhhh. Some might look at the box or outside of the
package and then they'll ask you what it means after they read it in the
event that they do find something. (grin)

Subject: Re: How do I set up a sound bar?

Hi there Sieghard,

How are you?

Thank you for explaining everything to me regarding the sound bar, my
TV, and Apple TV.

I wanted a sound bar, to receive better sound from my small tv.

However, I didn't do a lot of research on sound bars. I had an idea as
to what they were, and I knew I didn't want to have to spend a klot of
money. But that was about it. I didn't want to ask something off-topic
for the list. I really wasn't sure if this was, because I was discussing
the Apple TV as well.

Anyway, my friend and roommate who tries to help me, doesn't know much
about technology. So we couldn't figure it out. The lady at Wal-mart,
where I bought the sound bar, and where I will never purchase
electronics again, wasn't very helpful at all! So it made the situation
even more frustrating.

This past Monday, we were considering going to Best Buy, and taking the
sound bar, tv, and optical cable down there. They were willing to help
us get it set up.

However, I ended up returning the sound bar and cable back to Wal-Mart.
It turns out, I don't have an optical port on this TV. At least if I do,
I am still not aware of it. But the problem has been solved. I am no
longer frustrated, and I now know next time to do more research on
something I know barely nothing about. Lesson well learned..

I ended up purchasing a pair of speakers with sub wolfer, from Best Buy.
It cost a lot less then the sound bar, and this made me rather happy.
Plus, the man with geek squad, was quite helpful. They usually are when
I go in there. He made sure my friends and I knew how to set up the
speakers. We got home, and set them up in no time. It was terrific!

Thank you for listening to all of this, and giving me important
information. I learned a lot!

Terri,

The third gen Apple TV has only 2 types of outputs, HDMI and optical audio
out. Most new TV's have also an optical audio out and most soundbars have
an optical audio in. This means you connect your ?Apple TV to your TV via
HDMI and then connect your TV to the soundbar via the optical audio cable.
This way the TV receives both video and audio via the HDMI cable which
carries both signals and the TV then sends just audio to your soundbar.
This is sort of beyond what is on topic for the list and nobody can really
answer your question without knowing exactly what inputs and outputs your
TV has and what inputs are on your soundbar.
If the soundbar only has analogue inputs as in RCA style red and white
then you have to see if your TV has this type of output and connect the
output from the TV to the input of the soundbar.
If the soundbar has an optical audio input you could of course use the
optical cable and connect the Apple T V directly to your soundbar totally
bypassing the TV. This means the TV would not have to be on for you to
listen to any of the Apple TV channels and if your TV was connected to the
Apple TV via HDMI and you had somebody sighted around who wanted to watch
then you just turn on the TV and mute or turn down the TV volume.

Hello everybody,

I have a few questions, and I am hoping someone on here might be able to
help me.

Last week, I bought a small, 19 inch, Insignia tv, for my bedroom. It
does not have the greatest of sound. But it isn't awful either.

However, I want to contact my 3rd generation Apple tv to this tv. This
way, I can watch whatever I want when I can't sleep, and won't possibly
disturb my roommate.

I thought about just purchasing some small speakers, because I don't
need extreme sound. But for some reason, when I use the Apple tv on the
Insignia tv in the living room, I always have to turn the volume way up.
Voiceover is loud! But the programs are not. So this is why I decided to
purchase a sound bar. I don't know much about them, but have heard of
them before.

So last night, my roommate and I went to Wal-Mart. I honestly didn't
want to spend too much money, especially when I didn't kno

Re: latest itunes

2016-08-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I tend to agree with you myself, but others have pointed out on this
list that the accessibility of App Store apps is the responsibility of
the app developers. Apple publishes the accessibility specifications, so
it's up to the app developer to follow those specifications. The same
reasoning would apply to a developer writing an application for Windows,
where there's also plenty of information on how to make your application
accessible.

This is also one of the reasons why I still like the third party screen
reader developer option. It means there's one more interested party out
there worrying about whether I can access an application or not. How
much of a priority can it be for a company to make their application
accessible on a competitors platform or have their screen reader jump
through hoops to make a competitors application accessible?

On 30/08/16 23:19, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

Well, while it may not all be up to Freedom Scientific or VFO or
whatever they are called now, it is both the responsibility of Apple and
the screenreader makers. I sure hope that VFO is having talks with Apple
about iTunes accessibility since only they can tell Apple what Apple
needs to do so that they can do what they must do.

Apple used to point out that iTtunes worked best with Window Eyes, but I
think for a while before Windo Eyes became part of VFO Jaws was actually
working at least as good or better and now that both screenreaders are
under the same hat so to speak I really hope Apple and VFO get their
wires crossed in a way that is going to result in an improvement to
accessibility and not a reduction.

it’s their problem.

Hi. Matt Dierckens runs a google group called Apple Beta Discussion. You can
subscribe to it by sending a blank email to
apple-beta-discussion+subscr...@googlegroups.com. Also the same guy has a Roger
group version of that list. If you have Roger and you'd like to be a part of
that group, email me privately with your handle on Roger and I'll ask him if
it's cool that you become a member.

A friend of mine has been waiting over a month to be subscribed.
I've written to the owner suggesting that I could set up a list if he is too

Re: bluetooth keyboard and app switcher?

2016-08-31 Thread Brett C.
Press control, option, H, H to get to the app switcher. That’s VO H twice. You
can open an app with VO space bar, or combination of up and down arrows with
quick nav enabled. You can also use option up or down arrow to reveal options
to close or open an app.

There are fields on the page to enter your question, another field to provide
more detail, and fields to enter your first and last name. There is a combo
box where you indicate whether you are using the Android, iOS, Windows Phone,
or another version of Navigon. In this combo box you will here Swedish and
English as you down arrow through the choices.

I may have missed the field to enter your email address. You may want to

RE: Which gps app

2016-08-31 Thread Chip Orange
I want to add that I've been very disappointed in the quality of the maps
included with Blind Square GPS (from Open Street Maps), and I am going to
switch to one of these mentioned here by Mark.

I also purchased Arriadne GPS, and while I need to spend more time learning how
to use it, it seems very good at giving you an overall feel for how an area is
laid out, and it's price is so very good, what have you got to lose in trying
it out? I'm not sure that it does turn-by-turn directions, but even if not,
it's still quite useful.

Does using JAWS touch cursor with iTunes make it any better?

Not able to check at the moment, or even later today.

I find that with the latest version of Jaws, when it comes to the latest

Please remember that one does not need an actual touch screen in order to use

Well it does depend on what you want to do with that external hardrive.
If it is to expand the overall memory of your iDevice for apps and other

music, then you could always get those external har drives that you
could connect to through wi-fi, download the manufacturer's app and play
the content that way.

I personally have not done this but I do have a good friend of mine
that does. While commuting on the bus, he plays movies and music from

I was looking around on Amazon and I’ve found external portable hard
drives for Macs, but they don’t mention whether I could use them with
an iPad.

Is that feasible? I’d like to expand my storage. A 1TB drive would be
just great, but 500GB would be okay.

Thanks.

I guess it would have been better to have mentioned when I originally posted
that I have a pretty large music collection, and I wanted to find out how I can
access it on my iPad Mini. So your info is very helpful indeed.
I’ve read that I can put it all up on the cloud, but I also read that I have to
download it before I can play it. All I wanted to do was play whatever I wanted
from my collection immediately on my iPad Mini the same as I can on my laptop.
Thanks again.

Subject: RE: Can I Hook Up An External Portable Hard Drive to My iPad Mini?

Hi Evan,

I don’t intend to bash other list members, but I don’t think you received the
correct information from anybody at this point. The short answer is No, you
can’t hook up external hard drives. The slightly longer answer is that there
are USB sticks which plug into your Lightning port and there are Wi-Fi enabled
hard drives as well as network attached storage devices which allow you to
access their information.

The big restriction with any of these is that you will need to use whichever
app is designed too work with the device you purchase. This means you can’t
buy a Wi-Fi enabled hard drive, put all your music on it and then access said
music from the music app on your device. Similarly you couldn’t buy a 64 Gb or
128 Gb USB stick with a Lightning port, plug it into your device and access
the ffiles on it from just any app. You typically would have to download the
app from the maker of your USB stick or hard drive and inside that app you
ccan then see all the files on your sstorage device provided of course the app
is accessible which is not a given.

Another option is to pay for say 1 Tb of Dropbox storage or buy an Office 365
subscription from Microsoft which comes with 1 Tb of OneDrive storage. You can
then have all your files in the cloud with one of these services and use their
apps which are quite accessible to access the content. If it is mostly music
you have there is an app called Cloudplayer (among others) which gives you a
pretty good set of features and it allows you to access the music in Dropbox,,
OneDrive, Google Drive etc.

Jonathan Mosen also has a blog article on his website about significant
accessibility improvements for the Synology Discstation. This is a company
which makes 2-bay and 4-bay network attached storage devices. Apparently the
interface to manage these is now much more accessible and according to Jonathan
they also have an accessible iOS app which would give you access to all your
music and I assume other files as well. But once again, it would be from inside
their app and not with the stock Music app.

Apple has relaxed some of their restrictions, but they still don’t allow you to
access the file system the same way you can in Windows or Android.

Good luck,

Sieghard

I was looking around on Amazon and I’ve found external portable hard drives
for Macs, but they don’t mention whether I could use them with an iPad.

Is that feasible? I’d like to expand my storage. A 1TB drive would be just
great, but 500GB would be okay.

  Thanks.

I purchased an Aria scale several years ago. It was accurate with my weight.
However, it would not calculate my bmi correctly. There was nothing wrong
with the scale. It calculated the bmi's right on many other people. I have a
lot of metal implanted in my body. We believe that is why the scale wouldn't
work correctly. Just wanted to put that out there for others who may have
lots of metal.

Well, while it may not all be up to Freedom Scientific or VFO or whatever they
are called now, it is both the responsibility of Apple and the screenreader

accessibility since only they can tell Apple what Apple needs to do so that
they can do what they must do.

Apple used to point out that iTtunes worked best with Window Eyes, but I think
for a while before Windo Eyes became part of VFO Jaws was actually working at

so to speak I really hope Apple and VFO get their wires crossed in a way that
is going to result in an improvement to accessibility and not a reduction.

RE: Can I Hook Up An External Portable Hard Drive to My iPad Mini?

2016-08-31 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
Well it does depend on what you want to do with that external hardrive.
If it is to expand the overall memory of your iDevice for apps and other
data, then there isn't really any way of doing this. If you want to
have the external hard drive to play media content, like movies or
music, then you could always get those external har drives that you
could connect to through wi-fi, download the manufacturer's app and play
the content that way.

I personally have not done this but I do have a good friend of mine
that does. While commuting on the bus, he plays movies and music from
this hard drive through the manufacturer's app, but whether the app is
accessible, I don't really know.

Hope this helps!

I don’t think you can.

I was looking around on Amazon and I’ve found external portable hard
drives for Macs, but they don’t mention whether I could use them with
an iPad.

Is that feasible? I’d like to expand my storage. A 1TB drive would be
just great, but 500GB would be okay.

Thanks.

Frustration with Trying to Cancel Newsstand Subscription on iPhone Kindle App

2016-08-31 Thread Christine Grassman
Good day, all:
I wish to unsubscribe from a magazine within my iPhone Kindle app. I tried to
find the subscription itself on both the Kindle app and within my Amazon
account on my iPhone. According to the information I found, I am supposed to be
able to locate the subscription within Manage Content and Devices. I see my
subscription title in the Kindle app, but there is no “more actions” to
unsubscribe. On my Amazon app, I can only locate purchased books, even though I
have “All” checked. What am I missing? Thanks.
Christine

Re: How do I set up a sound bar?

2016-08-31 Thread Terri Stimmel

Interest in a list to discuss I device and Mac betas?

2016-08-31 Thread Adam Morris

Hi all,

I realise there is currently a list to discuss betas but people aren't
being added in over a month.

I'm gauging interest in a new list.

If people can write to me off list at

a...@damorris.com

if interested.

Depending on interest I'll set up a list.
