Thank you. This appears like what we’re looking for. She’d be fine with having
a local number while she’s there. It’s more the data when she’s out and about
since my in-laws also have Wi-Fi.

Hello,

Since your wife can speak German, following is a great resource for all
infamiliar with the crazy prepaid system there -yes, nearly every supermarket
chain has a carrier, there are offers for people coming from foreign countries
etc.

www.prepaid-wiki.de

If internet access is all she's asking for, Alditalk would be the best option
as you can get 5 gb. of data for nearly €15. It seems impossible to get more
than 5 gb while on prepaid. You can get Alditalk sims and refill cards at every
Aldi supermarket - they are to be found just about everywhere.

There are also offers focused on international calling - not sure if they cover
the US.

I'm using Lebara where for €30 I've got 1000 minutes to the EU and 3 gb of data
or 500 minutes and 5 gb. There are other offers like Blauworld or Lyca Mobile
too. You've got to research on the website above.

Safe travels and a well-spent time.

Subject: Pre-paid data plan for iPhone in Germany?

Hello list,

So my better half will be visiting the in-laws later this year. She’s going to
be in Germany for roughly four weeks and will be taking her unlocked GSm
iPhone. I was wondering if any of the international travelers or possibly
German based members of this list can recommend a pre-paid cellular plan that
she can use while she’s over there?

Having the local number or the need to activate in German is no big deal for
her since she’s from Germany, but as we’re not terribly familiar with cell
plans, thus my question.

Calls/texts aren’t that much of a concern since there are options like
Facetime, iMessages, Skype/Hangouts and so on. It’s really more the data plans
that she’s interested in.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

problm with an app

2016-10-22 Thread david gross
A app from here in pittsburgh is giving me a problem and I need some advice.

The app is called dkpittsburghsports.com

It is a pay site.

The owner has recently acquired a new developer so the ongoing issue may go
away in the near future.

At this time, using my Iphone 6 plus annd Ios 9.3 and my bluetooth keyboard,
when you open the app, the cursor is trapped in 1 of 3 areas. It reads like a
progress bar, along with two tabs, labeled home and settings.

I find it ipossible to get the cursor anywhere else on the page, I use quick
navigation keys for links, headings, etc., but the cursor is locked in.

Any idea what if anything I can do to be able to move around this app?

Siri not calling spoken phone number

2016-10-22 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi List,

I often ask Siri to call contacts and seldom have any problems with this.
However, I don't have any settings restricting incoming or outgoing calls
just to contacts in case I want to provide the phone number on the fly.
Today, I told Siri to call an 800 number of one of the free conferencing
services and gave her the appropriate 10 digits to call. She immediately
came back with a question of who I wanted her to call. I've never gotten
this sort of response before and I ended up having to launch the keypad and
manually typing in the 10 digit phone number.

Has anyone else experienced such behavior from Siri? I'm running the latest
iOS 10.0.2 on my iPhone 6 with Verizon and have never experienced this sort
of inquisition before when giving Siri the phone number to call. I'm curious
what sort of delay I'm going to have if I ever ask her to call 9 1 1 in an
emergency. I won't have time to mess around with anything other than her
dialing the number.

I welcome any comments and if anyone has a workaround to avoid this hassle
when giving Siri the number to call, I'd love to hear it. Thanks in advance.

Mirai-based DDoS attack highlights benefits of Apple's secure HomeKit platform

2016-10-22 Thread Mary Otten
Really worth considering before you get less secure iot devices.

Mirai-based DDoS attack highlights benefits of Apple's secure HomeKit platform
AppleInsider

A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that on Friday severely impacted
internet access for many U.S. web denizens was found to be in part enabled by a
botnet targeting unprotected "Internet of Things" devices. For Apple, the
revelation vindicates a controversial walled garden approach to IoT, borne out
through the encryption HomeKit protocol.

As detailed yesterday, unknown hackers set their sights on Dyn, an internet
management company that provides DNS services to many major web entities.

A series of repeated attacks caused websites including The Verge, Imgur and
Reddit, as well as services like HBO Now, and PayPal, to see slowdowns and
extended downtimes. Follow-up waves played havoc with The New York Times, CNN,
Netflix, Twitter and the PlayStation Network, among many others.

Though Dyn was initially unable to nail down a source, subsequent information
published by security research firm Flashpoint revealed the targeted attacks
involved a strain of the Mirai malware, reports Brian Krebs. Krebs has
firsthand experience with Mirai, as the malware was deployed in a DDoS attack
that brought down his website, KrebsOnSecurity, in September.

Mirai searches the web for IoT devices set up with default admin username and
password combinations, Krebs says. Once discovered, the malware infiltrates and
uses poorly protected hardware to facilitate a DDoS attack on an online entity,
in this case Dyn.

Poor security practices are nothing new. Uninitiated or lazy end users have for
decades left factory default settings untouched on routers, networked printers
and other potential intrusion vectors. But this is different.

DVRs and IP cameras made by Chinese company XiongMai Technologies, as well as
other connected gadgets currently flooding the market, contain a grievous
security vulnerability and are in large part responsible for hosting the
botnet.According to Krebs, DVRs and IP cameras made by Chinese company XiongMai
Technologies, as well as other connected gadgets currently flooding the market,
contain a grievous security vulnerability and are in large part responsible for
hosting the botnet. As he explains, a portion of these devices can be reached
via Telnet and SSH even after a user changes the default username and password.

"The issue with these particular devices is that a user cannot feasibly change
this password," said Zach Wikholm, research developer at Flashpoint. "The
password is hardcoded into the firmware, and the tools necessary to disable it
are not present. Even worse, the web interface is not aware that these
credentials even exist."

To prevent another Mirai attack, or a similar assault harnessing IoT hardware,
offending devices might require a recall, Krebs says. Short of a that,
unplugging an affected product is an effective stopgap.

By contrast, Apple's HomeKit features built-in end-to-end encryption, protected
wireless chip standards, remote access obfuscation and other security measures
designed to thwart hacks. Needless to say, it would be relatively difficult to
turn a HomeKit MFi device in a DDoS zombie.

Announced in 2014 alongside iOS 8, HomeKit debuted as a secure framework onto
which manufacturers of smart home products can build. Specifically, the system
uses iOS and iCloud infrastructure to securely synchronize data between host
devices and accessories.

Apple details HomeKit protections in a security document posted to its website
(PDF link), saying the system is based on public-private key pairs.

First, key pairs are generated on an iOS device and assigned to each HomeKit
user. The unique HomeKit identity is stored in Keychain and synchronized to
other devices via iCloud Keychain. Compatible accessories generate their own
key pair for communicating with linked iOS devices. Importantly, accessories
will generate new key pairs when restored to factory settings.

Apple uses the Secure Remote Password (3,072-bit) protocol to establish a link
between an iOS device and a HomeKit accessory via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. On first
use, keys are exchanged through a procedure that involves entering an 8-digit
code provided by the manufacturer into a host iPhone or iPad. Finally,
exchanged data is encrypted while the system verifies the accessory's MFi
certification.

When an iPhone communicates with a HomeKit accessory, the two devices
authenticate each other using the exchanged keys, Station-to-Station protocol
and per-session encryption. Further, Apple painstakingly designed a remote
control feature called iCloud Remote that allows users to access their
accessories when not at home.

Accessories that support iCloud remote access are provisioned during the

I should add to what Shaff replied to you. The only way you can downgrade to
the previous version of WhatsApp is if you had that version backed up to
iTunes. If you don't, then as he said, you won't be able to downgrade it.

I check the textbox, realise I can keyboard so I start to do that.
Immediately I put down my phone whilst still writing the message, the
"handwriting" comment is spoken once again.

I'll try VO as the possible culpret next time I pick up my phone!

 Greetings,

The American Council of the Blind has a page for audio described
 programs.
They have a page devoted to Netflix that says it is updated weekly.
At this point they seem to have over 200 audio described items. I
thought folks would want to know this.
