Re: Braille to speech apps?

2016-12-08 Thread Cathy Inglis
I have voice braille reader, but I can't seem to get it to work with bard
books. Can anybody please help me do this. I really really do want to be able
to use the app with bard braille books. I do have a book that was put in there
from Bard, I was able to do that, but I can't seem to get it to read.

RE: Is the change pronunciation bug still in VoiceOver?

2016-12-08 Thread Richard Turner
I just switched to the the Irish compact voice and entered the word “tyre” with
the spelling of “tire” and it now reads it correctly.
I did do one step differently than you I think.
I first went into where it says language English and selected English Ireland
and then selected all languages.
Then I read your message using the Moira compact voice and it said “tyre” as
“tire,” not “tear.”

I hoe that helps.

Subject: Is the change pronunciation bug still in VoiceOver?

It appears to me that it is.
Tonight, I tried to change the compact Irish-English Moira voice’s
pronunciation of the word ‘tyre’ – which it pronounces as tear, (shed a tear
for me!), and which is, in US spelling, tire, – to ‘tire’. I was unsuccessful.
Even though VO successfully played the tire replacement, it wouldn’t take.
Applied to all languages, it still wouldn’t take. I spelled out the word on the
keyboard, and brailled it; no good. I could only find a ‘done’ button after the
edit button when the word and substitution had already been put in. I tried
that, and no better.

am I missing something here? Does one have to dictate the word?

Is the change pronunciation bug still in VoiceOver?

2016-12-08 Thread Flor Lynch

RE: a mesenger call question and FB query

Subject: a mesenger call question and FB query

Two questions about Facebook and Mesenger. A friend is very upset so need an
answer at least for the mesenger as soon as possible. Thanks in advance.

1. My friend got a call on Mesenger from Scotland, but she missed the call. At
this moment she has no wifi so is using her cellphone cplan for iPhone. She has
limited data but no text telling her data was gone. When she saw the mesenger
call she called back forgetting she had no wifi. Will that call be charged to
her bill or is mesenger calling free?
2. I would like to know if there is a setting in Facebook that would place all
status posts from newest to oldest.

Again, thanks for helping. My friend has been under a bad cloud right now, and
this mistake made it worse. My own sense is that mesenger calls are kind of
like most chat video and voice calls. However, she needs reassurance, and I am
not totally sure I am correct.

iheart radio app aquisition questions

2016-12-08 Thread Larry Lumpkin
When I installed the iheart radio app for the apple tv 4, it asked me if I
wanted to login/activate or maybe later. If I chose log in/activate, it
asked me to enter a code the app gave me into iheart on the computer. I did
this and the computer said my device was activated as a guest. When I
launched iheart on the apple tv, it asked me if I wanted to request a new
code and then quickly said "done". I could go no further. I uninstalled
the app and re-installed it. This time I chose "maybe later" instead of
"login/activate" and the app came right up and seems to be fine now though
it doesn't seem as responsive as the my tuner app. Can anyone offer an
explanation for this?

It's a separate unit. The advantage of those is that you don't suddenfly
find that they no longer fit if you upgrade your phone. There may be a
battery case from Apple or Mophie. Hope you're able to find a good
solution.

Re: Mophie Juice Packs for iPhone 7

2016-12-08 Thread Andy Baracco
i think that since Apple has begun marketing an external battery pack, that
this has eaten into the market for a 3rd party product. The advantage to using
the Apple product is that you know the charge status of the battery. The
disadvantage is that the form factor is butt ugly.

I checked the Mophie site a couple of weeks ago, and I think that what they did
was create a case for the 7 to which you can magnetically attach various

For day to day use, I recommend the 1MA power bank from Anker. It's rugged,
vey thin and portable, and has a rough texture which is easy to grip. They have
larger capacity batteries. I have a 26800MA battery but it's too big for pocket
use. There are also smaller lipstick sized batteries which have around 3500 MA.
This would charge an iPHONE at least once. A 1MA battery would keep you in
power for a few days if necessary and is still no larger or heavier than a deck
of cards.

There are a few things about the most recent Uber update that I don't like.
But for the most part, I have figured out ways to work around a couple of my
issues. I'm definitely annoyed with the fact that it no longer tells you
what your current location is. So often, the GPS pan can be a few addresses,
or blocks off. Therefore, I just wind up typing in my location, which is
something that I did most of the time before the update anyway. I haven't
done so yet, but I'm planning to write to Uber to voice my concerns about

Actually, the only other way to alert your driver that you are blind, or
visually impaired, is to send them a text message. However, I always call
instead of texting, mainly because I want to make sure they actually get the
message. I have had several drivers tell me that they would prefer a phone
call, over a text message because when they get a text message, in order for
them to read it, they have to switch from their GPS screen. For the most
part, I really haven't had any issues with anyone not being very helpful,
when they pick me up. I always make that call to tell them about my
blindness immediately after they receive my trip.

This wouldn't be an issue for sighted folks, but if the vehicle is 100
feet away and you can't see it, it could be a deal breaker.

I can't speak for the Uber app or the service as it is only available in a
few cities in Canada, but as far as GPS goes it should be accurate enough
for this purpose. Provided you have a good view of the sky and aren't in a
building or a super-narrow area surrounded by high-rise buildings GPS
accuracy should be 5 meters (about 16 feet) or for sure it should be 10
metres (about 32 feet). This mya not be good enough to find an exact spot,
but good enough for most uses.

I have been getting difficulties with uber since more than one month ago.
Before I was able to select my pick up in a list of choices, now I have to
find where I am. The current position doesn't work very well, because we
know that GPS are no so accurate. Moreover before I had more control on
the app, but in the last updates uber has done a lot of steps back.

Kevin, I used the app on Tuesday and noticed it did not show my address. But,
it had a field to edit my current address. I tapped on that to check that it
did have the address correct and I did not have to change it. Maybe give that a

Hi Tom,

Doing a Google search for "How can I reset my Uber password" gave me a link to
the correct page on their website. If you go to heading level one and then
arrow down it will tell you that in order to recover your password you must
click the below link, then you enter your email address and an email with reset
instructions will be sent to you. I assume that will be an email with a link
which you click and you can then enter a new password. I don't know if your
email is incorrect throughout the account so that you wouldn't be able to
receive said email or if it is just that you have to fix your email for receipt
purposes. I'd try it anyways and see what happens.
I also Googled "How to contact Uber" and found links which included a contact
form, it asked a few "Yes" or "No" questions as to the nature of your request
and then had a field to type a message. Here now is the link to the recover
password page:

https://help.uber.com/h/24a8fa5a-59b0-49b8-81e9-13e6dff81a1b

With respect to finding a phone number, I think many people don't realize that
if you do a Google search starting with "Phone number for" followed by what you
are looking for you often find the number displayed at the very top of the
search results.
I am going to give an example below using Plantronics since I had to contact
them yesterday. MI bought a Plantronics Voyager Edge bluetooth earpiece in mid
April and I can only use it for playback, the microphones seem to be not
working any more. This has been going on for months, but I just haven't taken
the time to contact them until yesterday. The response by the way was quite
satisfactory, the girl I spoke with made me do a reset of the headset to test
it again, when it still didn't work at all she sent me an email with a link to
initiate a warranty replacement. Anyhow, here is what I typed into Google and
below is what Google gave me and it was spot on and the direct number for their
customer sevice:

Phone number for Plantronics customer service
1 (800) 544-4660

Try this: Phone number for Apple Accessibility support
Here it didn't give me the number before all search results, but the third
search result contained this without even going into it:
Beats support: (800) 442‑4000 (U.S.) or see all worldwide support telephone
numbers.
If you have a disability, such as a vision, hearing or physical impairment,
call (877) 204-3930 for direct access to Apple representatives who are trained
in providing support using accessibility services.

Google searches are very powerful and are getting more so as time goes by. I
can only encourage anybody who is looking for anything to try it.
Don't hesitate to use very ordinary language like "I want to know the 5 largest
countries in the world by population" which will not list the countries in the
search results, but it gives you plenty of articles mostly with the top 10 so
it definitely finds what you are looking for.

Sieghard.

Hi
I've had no particular issues with booking rides and/or contacting drivers et
cetera with the most recent Uber updates. However, I haven't been getting Uber
receipts for quite some time, the reason being that in the app's settings for
my account, my e-mail address is incorrect. So I edited the e-mail address and
clicked "Save", and it then asked me for a password, which I've forgotten and
can't find it written down anywhere. Both in the app and on the Uber web site,
their password recovery process is unsatisfactory; in both cases I'm asked for
my mobile number, and there's another text entry field which is unlabeled so I
don't know what's required. Furthermore, I can't seem to find any support
number that I can call. Is there such a thing? What's the easiest way to fix my
e-mail address on record and recover my password or set a new one? I'm puzzled
by this and just a tad bit annoyed. Thanks in advance.

Re: How can I make folders for photos, and label photos

2016-12-08 Thread Daniel L. Gervais
Hi Wayne,

I am not quite sure of that sort of glitch, but I did just try it on my iPhone
6 Plus running the latest iOS 10.1.1 and took one of my computer screen, went
into the Photos app and relabelled it, took another picture of my dog a couple
of minutes later and when I went back to the Photos app, the picture of my
computer screen, being the first one I took, still had the description I wrote
and the photo of my dog, which was taken a couple minutes later based on the
timestamp, had the usual date and time label that you get on all pictures.

Like I said earlier, I had many pictures and videos that I had renamed the
label and when I would take another picture at a later date, the labels I had
written for my past pictures and videos stayed on the correct pictures/videos
and the new picture had nothing. This is where I would normally get someone
sighted to tell me what the picture was and I would then write a label for the
new picture.

So unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce the glitch you mentioned. Perhaps
that only happens on a specific iPhone model or in a specific iOS version?

Hope that helps!

While this is an option, I was under the impression that if you
labeled a picture with a description and then took another picture
that was unlabeled, the description you put on the first one would be
lost or associated with the second picture. In other words, the order
and labels of the pictures would be messed up. Is this right? If I
need to know what a picture has in it, I will generally use TapTapSee
or perhaps the new iDentifi app.

Re: Powerful-but-Thin Battery Pack for a 6S

2016-12-08 Thread Michael Feir
For day to day use, I recommend the 1MA power bank from Anker. It's
rugged, vey thin and portable, and has a rough texture which is easy to
grip. They have larger capacity batteries. I have a 26800MA battery but
it's too big for pocket use. There are also smaller lipstick sized
batteries which have around 3500 MA. This would charge an iPHONE at least
once. A 1MA battery would keep you in power for a few days if necessary
and is still no larger or heavier than a deck of cards.

Re: Hearing Aids & Bluetooth question

2016-12-08 Thread Deb Lewis
First, all hearing aids don't support bluetooth. But if they do, the
manufacturer will have a specific list of products that it's
compatible with. In some caes you have to buy an adaptor. There are
some significant problems with the interface of bluetooth and hearing
aids and most of my clients end up not liking it. Generally compatible
bluetooth will list what hearing aids they are compatible with.

I checked the Mophie site a couple of weeks ago, and I think that what they did
was create a case for the 7 to which you can magnetically attach various
things, including a battery pack.

Hearing Aids & Bluetooth question

2016-12-08 Thread Carla
I just got hearing aids and want to get a bluetooth for my phone. I got the
hearing aids from an audiologist so know they are good. I tried one
bluetooth and found out they don't work with voiceover but if I didn't have
voiceover they would work fine. My hearing aids are Widex brand. Do any of
you have any suggestions on what voiceover will work with? Thanks.

RE: issues with uber update

2016-12-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Regards,
Sieghard.

Hi Jim,

I checked the Mophie site a couple of weeks ago, and I think that what they did
was create a case for the 7 to which you can magnetically attach various
things, including a battery pack.

Mophie Juice Packs for iPhone 7

2016-12-08 Thread Jim Portillo
Good morning,

Does anyone know if Mophie is making a juice pack for the iPhone 7? I'm
looking online and seem to be getting different responses. Anyone know
anything about this? I'm looking for a good battery pack for my iPhone 7
which won't be too bulky or heavy.

Thanks.

Jim

RE: direct TV now, live chat, and 72 hour rewind option

2016-12-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As I said before, you may want to fall back on good old-fashion paper and snail
mail. Find out the address of their main office, wirte a letter to the CEO and
send it registered mail, those have to be signed for and are not as easy to
ignore as an email or a live chat with some guy in the Philippines or India
whose call centre was hired to provide tech support. Also, as Mark pointed out,
using Direct TV's social media accounts like Facebook and Twitter to put
forward the case for accessibility is also effective and a good idea.

Hello Kliphton, and list,

I don't know about anyone else, but I would like to see the transcript, please.

Also, if you don't mind, I would also appreciate the link to the channel
lineup. I think this could be quite helpful.

Also, how did you go about finding the live chat feature?

I've never been a fan of those. But this can come in handy as well.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: issues with uber update

2016-12-08 Thread Kevin Thompson
Actually, the only other way to alert your driver that you are blind, or
visually impaired, is to send them a text message. However, I always call
instead of texting, mainly because I want to make sure they actually get the
message. I have had several drivers tell me that they would prefer a phone
call, over a text message because when they get a text message, in order for
them to read it, they have to switch from their GPS screen. For the most part,
I really haven't had any issues with anyone not being very helpful, when they
pick me up. I always make that call to tell them about my blindness immediately
after they receive my trip.

Re: An Accessible App for reading PDF files

2016-12-08 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hi Wayne,

Thank you for this information.

I do have an Ipad Mini that is 64 gigs. So this might work.

I will just have to put these files in to those Apps, and see how they
look. I guess the not being able to edit the files, isn't a really big
thing.

I might also try Voice Dream, as I do have this as well. And it's the
paid version.

Thank you,

Terri

Re: issues with uber update

2016-12-08 Thread Kevin Thompson
There are a few things about the most recent Uber update that I don't like. But
for the most part, I have figured out ways to work around a couple of my
issues. I'm definitely annoyed with the fact that it no longer tells you what
your current location is. So often, the GPS pan can be a few addresses, or
blocks off. Therefore, I just wind up typing in my location, which is something
that I did most of the time before the update anyway. I haven't done so yet,
but I'm planning to write to Uber to voice my concerns about this most recent
update.

Re: issues with uber update

2016-12-08 Thread regina alvarado

I do not have to worry about this as we do not have uber drivers in Lakeland.
However, on the Bay news last night there was a story that Uber is collecting
information about their riders such as their location or something. I could not
hear the speech very well, no hearing aids in, but I did hear people are really
getting angry at the invasion of privacy. Has anyone heard about this? Perhaps
their new policy has muckf up the app?

A question re notifications in the FB app

2016-12-08 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi all,

I have a question for anyone using the FB app on an iDevice.

I consistently have a problem with VO announcing the number of
notifications I have and interrupting me while I'm reading a post or
article. For short posts and articles it's no big deal to simply start
over. But when I'm in the middle of a long article and VO suddenly
starts yelling about how I have 1 notification ... well, it's very
annoying. Is there a method for dealing with this or a work-around?

Thanks

can't find it on my phone, it looks like that is no longer there. Thanks for

Hello Kliphton, and list,

I don't know about anyone else, but I would like to see the transcript,

Also, if you don't mind, I would also appreciate the link to the channel

Also, how did you go about finding the live chat feature?

I've never been a fan of those. But this can come in handy as well.

Thank you,

I however live in New York city where it is perfectly obvious
where the traffic lights are.

I do think however there is a way to tell the state of the traffic
light and I would encourage you to investigate this possibility.

Knowing for sure if there is a walk or don't walk signal or if the
light is red or green, would be great.

Usually you can tell from the traffic paterns but when the
traffic is grid locked it gets really difficult.

Knowing how much time is left on the clock durring a walk cycle
would also be a real help.

Since the traffic lights are computer controled this information
is probagbly abled to be monitored in some way.

Thanks for considering this.

This is a new free app for travelers who are blind or

The app is called City Lights - Navigation and is
designed to give a
vibration alert as a traveler nears a traffic light.

Cities supported at the moment include:

Australia: Victoria State.

Canada: Montreal.

Greece: Athens.

UK: Manchester.

USA: San Francisco, Oakland, Chula Vista and Boston.

Cataracts are among the leading causes of vision loss

direct TV now, live chat, and 72 hour rewind option

2016-12-08 Thread Kliphton Miller
So, got the live chat to work on the direct TV now support page. The rep told
me that they didn’t know how to get voiceover to work with there app, and I
told them there was an entire section specifically for this. The rep flat out
ignored that comment. Also said there is no phone number, they are only a
streaming service, and live chat is the only way to talk to them. He did give
me a link to access the channel lineups, and told me they would attempt to fix
the voiceover issues in the future. Like I have stated before, the app is very
usable, once you get use to it. On another note, direct TV now app now has a
72 hour rewind option on select channels. I know sling TV had this, and it
worked well, I just saw this update last night, or this morning, whatever time
you consider night and day, so I haven’t had a chance to try it out yet. If
anyone wants to see the live chat conversation let me know, I had the
transcript emailed to me.
