Re: GPS Apps

2017-05-15 Thread Feliciano Godoy
On iOS, I recommend blindsquare simultaneously with Google maps. Nearby
explorer did not meet my standards. Although blindsquare and nearby explorer
was said to use foursquare for its maps, blindsquare was superior. I don't care
much for the intersection analysis as i use my auditory senses for that.
BlindSquare provided more accurate information and more points of interest.

AppleWatch - unable to dismiss notifications since last update

2017-05-15 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

I have an AppleWatch Series 1.

Since the last update, when I get a notification on the watch, and I swipe to
the Dismiss button and double tap on it, the double tap doesn't work, no matter
how many times I double tap on it.

When I go to the Notification center and double tap on it, notifications are
listed, and a flick down brings up the Clear button, on which a double tap
works well to clear the notification.

I'm curious if others have noticed similar behavior.

Thanks, Keith

Re: Buying an unlocked phone

2017-05-15 Thread Joseph Hudson
Hi Denise, if you're going to buy an unlocked iPhone. Be prepared to shell out
a lot of money. In less you purchase it on the Apple program. Which most people
these days called the black plan. So pretty much, since you're going to stay
with your carrier, if you have the money go ahead and pay it. But if you don't,
you're better off just getting a different one three-year carrier.

Buying an unlocked phone

2017-05-15 Thread denise avant
Hello all,

I am planning to buy a new iPhone. Actually I am just moving down to the
smaller 6s. Is it a good idea to get an unlocked phone, even though I will
be remaining with my existing carrier for the foreseeable future. Or do I
need to purchase the phone locked to that carrier, and just change the sym
card when the new one comes?

Thanks.

RE: Password Manager

2017-05-15 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have been a Roboform user for probably 15 years, maybe even longer. I don’t
have any Android devices, but it does work well with both Windows and iOS, I
can do passwords, bookmarks (not protected with a password) and either password
protected or not passprotected SafeNotes. Roboform also has a Contacts option,
but I don’t use it, you can enter all your personal info such as credit cards,
bank accounts Social Insurance Number etc. if you wish and it can also
auto-generate passwords.
The newest version has some sort of feature built in where you can specify a
person to have access in case you die and also to share passwords via email
with somebody else, but I haven’t tried this yet.
And yes, it does have 2-factor authentication.

Hello,

I am looking for a good password manager that works cross-platform, preferably
one with some sort of an online option... This takes away a small amount of
security, however is more convenient. I do not wish to sync databases with
Google Drive. Also, it should be accessible on multiple platforms such as
Windows, Android, Mac OS, and iOS. It should also have 2fa as an option. I have
been using Lastpass, however it has seen some accessibility regressions in
Firefox recently. Any thoughts? Even if you aren't sure if one would meet my
needs, what do you use as a password manager, or are you reliant on iOS
keychain?

Thanks.

Re: OCR Apps

2017-05-15 Thread Richard Turner

While I've had nothing but good success with Prizmo Go, if you want to be able
to copy the text, or send it, you need the $4.99 Export package.
Office Lens, as others have said, is free, and allows you to export the text.
It just has a few more steps to get to that point, but works great too.
Unless you need to fairly easily save multipage documents, at this point, I
would not put the money into KNFB Reader since these other apps have come along.

Re: GPS Apps

2017-05-15 Thread Richard Turner

Well, if you would consider buying Seeing Eye GPS, you may as well just buy the
iOS version of Nearby Explorer since it is significantly less expensive.
Or, a combination of Blind Square with Google Maps is almost as good as Nearby

I don't know about the latitude/longitude option with any of the apps since I
do not use it.
I hope you find a good combination.

Hello,

On Android, I used Nearby Explorer. I contacted the dev to see if they would
offer some sort of a discount as I already purchased their app once, however
was told I would need to pay for the app. On Android, I found it quite good as
I could choose what I wanted to be announced, and I could choose whether to use
onboard or online maps. It had features that no other app used. I am
considering purchasing the app on iOS, however I am interested in others'
experiences with navigation apps. I am looking for an app which will announce
intersections accurately as I approach them, as well as points of interest. It
would be good if it offered turn-by-turn navigation, although I would mostly
use Google Maps for that. Getting heading is good. Rarely, lat/long is good as
well, as I do enjoy getting out to geocache from time to time.

So, any thoughts? It's fine if it is more than one app... Will BlindSquare meet
my needs? Should I consider the Seeing Eye GPS? Any other apps that I should
have on my list?

Thanks all.

Question About the app store on Fourth Generation Apple TV and Voice Over

2017-05-15 Thread Charlene Young
Hello everyone,

Ever since I updated my apple tv to the latest version a few months ago, I
have noticed that when I go into the app store, then I go to top charts and
pick one of the categories to view the top apps for that category and click
see all, voice over doesn't seem to want to talk to me anymore. The only
way I can fix it is if I go out of the app store. There was just a new
update today so I figured that might fix the problem but I was wrong. Has
anyone else experienced this? If so, is it a gliche within the new update
or do I need to go turn a setting on that might have been shut off during
the update process?

Thank you in advance,

Charlene

I believe that if you look on your voice mail screen you will find a folder

Hi Everyone,
I am having a crazy problem with my voicemail. I have an i phone 7. This is
what happens. Someone sends me a voicemail. I am not alerted to it, but when I
bring up the home screen a message comes up and says warning your voicemail is
ninety-five percent full. I only have one voicemail message. I never keep
voicemail after I have listened to it. Is anyone else having this problem? This
has just started about two weeks ago. I have not gotten the latest update yet.
Maybe that will fix the problem.
Anyway if anyone has any thoughts on what might be going on here, please let me

Smartphone Addiction

Tips for Breaking Free of Compulsive Smartphone Use

Man and woman using smartphones

While a smartphone, tablet, or computer can be a hugely productive tool,
compulsive use of these devices can interfere with your daily life, work,
and

relationships. When you spend more time on social media or playing games
than you do interacting with real people, or you can't stop yourself from
repeatedly

checking texts, emails, news feeds, websites, or apps-even when it has
negative consequences in your life-it may be time to reassess your
technology use.

By learning about the signs and symptoms of smartphone and Internet
addiction and the ways to break free of the habit, you can better balance
your life,

online and off.

What is smartphone addiction?

Smartphone addiction, sometimes colloquially known as "nomophobia" (fear of
being without a mobile phone), is often fueled by an Internet overuse
problem

or Internet addiction disorder. After all, it's rarely the phone or tablet
itself that creates the compulsion, but rather the games, apps, and online
worlds

it connects us to.

Smartphone addiction can encompass a variety of impulse-control problems,
including:

Virtual relationships. Addiction to social networking, dating apps, texting,
and messaging can extend to the point where virtual, online friends become

more important than real-life relationships. We've all seen the couples
sitting together in a coffee shop or restaurant ignoring each other and
engaging

with their smartphones instead. While the Internet can be a great place to
meet new people, reconnect with old friends, or even start romantic
relationships,

online relationships are not a healthy substitute for real life
interactions. Online friends tend to exist in a bubble, not subject to the
same demands

or stresses as messy real-world relationships. Since few real-life
relationships can compete with these neat, virtual relationships, you may
find yourself

spending more and more time with online friends, retreating from your real
world family and friends. Compulsive use of dating apps can change your
focus

to short-term hookups instead of developing long-term relationships.

Online compulsions, such as gaming, gambling, stock trading, online
shopping, or bidding on auction sites like eBay can often lead to financial
and job-related

problems. While gambling addiction has been a well-documented problem for
years, the availability of Internet gambling has made gambling far more
accessible.

Compulsive stock trading or online shopping can be just as financially and
socially damaging. eBay addicts may wake up at strange hours in order to be

online for the last remaining minutes of an auction. You may purchase things
you don't need and can't afford just to experience the excitement of placing

the winning bid.

Information overload. Compulsive web surfing, watching videos, playing
games, searching Google, or checking news feeds can lead to lower
productivity at

work or school and isolate you for hours at a time. All this compulsive use
of the Internet and smartphone apps can cause you to neglect other aspects

of your life, from real-world relationships to hobbies and social pursuits.

Cybersex addiction

Compulsive use of Internet pornography, sexting, nude-swapping, adult chat
rooms, or messaging services can impact negatively on your real-life
intimate

relationships and overall emotional health. While online pornography and
cybersex addictions are types of sexual addiction, the Internet makes it
more

accessible, relatively anonymous, and very convenient. It's easy to spend
hours on a smartphone or tablet engaging in fantasies impossible in real
life.

Excessive use of sex and dating apps that facilitate casual sex can make it
more difficult to develop long-term intimate relationships or damage an
existing

relationship.

While you can experience these impulse-control problems with a laptop or
even desktop computer, the size and convenience of smartphones and tablets
means

that we can take them just about anywhere and gratify our compulsions. In
fact, studies suggest that most of us are rarely ever more than five feet
from

our smartphones. Many people admit to regularly using them in theaters,
while driving, during religious services, business meetings, kids' school
performances,

in the shower, and even during sex. So what causes our obsession with these
always-connected devices?

Smartphones, tablets, or the Internet can be addictive because their use,
just like the use of drugs and alcohol, can trigger the release of the brain

chemical dopamine and alter mood. And just like using drugs and alcohol, you
can rapidly build up tolerance so that it takes more and more time in front

of these screens to derive the

Even if you aren't sure if one would meet my
needs, what do you use as a password manager, or are you reliant on iOS
keychain?

Thanks.

Subject: GPS Apps

Thanks all.

Re: OCR Apps

2017-05-15 Thread Marie
While I have found that KNFB Reader is the best, I have tried Office Lens which
is free and very accurate. I also tried Prismo Go but unlike others I find it
not nearly as accurate as the other two. But it is free so I suggest you try it
and Office Lens before paying the price of the KNFB reader.

Hello,

I am looking for someone that has used different OCR apps to reflect on their
experiences. I purchased the KNFB app for Android, and am hesitating to
purchase it again on iOS as it is costly, and on Android, the app would break
after every update. However, if it is believed that the results are superior
from any other app, I will consider it... Which OCR apps have you used, did you
find them to work, and which one would you recommend?

Thanks.

Even if you aren't sure if one would meet my
needs, what do you use as a password manager, or are you reliant on iOS
keychain?

Thanks.

RE: Password Manager

2017-05-15 Thread Alan Lemly
I like KeePass for managing my passwords on my Windows 7 computer and its
companion Mini KeePass on my iPhone 7. That's spelled k e e p a s s. It's not
as automated as others since you have to manually share the passwords file
between your computer and your iPhone. I do this with iTunes but you can also
do it with Dropbox. I'm just not a fan of placing my password files in the
cloud even if they are encrypted.

The below How-To-Geek article isn't from an accessibility standpoint but it has
some good comparison information on password managers:

https://www.howtogeek.com/240255/password-managers-compared-lastpass-vs-keepass-vs-dashlane-vs-1password/

Good luck.

RE: OCR Apps

2017-05-15 Thread Alan Lemly
You might want to give Microsoft's Office Lens a try. Its interface isn't
nearly as easy to use as KNFB Reader but it is free and does a very good job of
formatting the captured document. It also handles a variety of capture modes
including business card, document, white board, and picture.

Subject: Password Manager

Even if you aren't sure if one would meet my
needs, what do you use as a password manager, or are you reliant on iOS
keychain?

Thanks.

GPS Apps

2017-05-15 Thread Nimer Jaber
Hello,

On Android, I used Nearby Explorer. I contacted the dev to see if they
would offer some sort of a discount as I already purchased their app once,
however was told I would need to pay for the app. On Android, I found it
quite good as I could choose what I wanted to be announced, and I could
choose whether to use onboard or online maps. It had features that no other
app used. I am considering purchasing the app on iOS, however I am
interested in others' experiences with navigation apps. I am looking for an
app which will announce intersections accurately as I approach them, as
well as points of interest. It would be good if it offered turn-by-turn
navigation, although I would mostly use Google Maps for that. Getting
heading is good. Rarely, lat/long is good as well, as I do enjoy getting
out to geocache from time to time.

So, any thoughts? It's fine if it is more than one app... Will BlindSquare
meet my needs? Should I consider the Seeing Eye GPS? Any other apps that I
should have on my list?

Thanks all.

Hello,

I am looking for someone that has used different OCR apps to reflect on
their experiences. I purchased the KNFB app for Android, and am hesitating
to purchase it again on iOS as it is costly, and on Android, the app would
break after every update. However, if it is believed that the results are

Even if you aren't sure if one would meet my
needs, what do you use as a password manager, or are you reliant on iOS
keychain?

Thanks.

RE: Yes Chef not working correctly

2017-05-15 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
For those who have the Echo, AllRecipes is now available. So you can ask Alexa
to search for a recipe, for example, and she will start suggesting recipes.
Once you find one you want, you can ask for the ingredients, directions,
reviews, etc.

She will pause after each step in the directions and let you resume when you
are ready for the next step. That is why I mentionned it in the Yes Chef
discussion, because I think that was an app you could interact with using your
voice, if I recall correctly. I got rid of the app because of the problems
mentionned here.

I like the idea of this app, but had the same problem, nothing I said was
understood. Also, the speech is choppy and gets cut off a lot and this app
clearly needs some major work and improvements.

until you activate the "Edit" button for the area you want to change, e.g.
for the personal information area, the security area etc.
If you start at the top of the page and use the quick nav key for buttons it
would be the second edit button as the first applies to changes to your
personal information.
Once I activated this edit button I had the option to change my password and
the last date when I changed it was displayed, it was able to add another
trusted phone number and, as I said, in the two-factor security section a
button to "turn off two-factor authentication" was available. I didn't do
this, but I understand that if you do this you have to select 3 new security
questions and provide answers and maybe there is another step, but changing
the password as far as I can tell is not required. Here is an Apple support
article about two-factor authentication:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204915

In the frequently asked questions area one of the questions is "Can I turn
off two-factor authentication after I’ve turned it on?"
The answer given is "You can't turn off two-factor authentication for some
accounts created in iOS 10.3 or macOS Sierra 10.12.4 and later. If you
created your Apple ID in an earlier version of iOS or macOS, you can turn
off two-factor authentication.

In other words, if you create a new Apple Id using iOS 10.3 and later or
macOS Sierra 10.12.4 and later, it appears people are stuck with two-factor
authentication, but if you had your Apple Id for some time as most of us
have you should be OK. I also assume that since this is not mentioned that
if you create an Apple Id using a PC you should be OK and able to turn off
two-factor authentication.

Hi Sieghard

I believe there must be another step to fulfill: changing password. I did
like you said and noticed 2stepverifications is on for my account but there
is no way to turn it off once logged in.

I think you have to change the password of the account to do so.

Why is .iCloud more proprietory than .me? I guess she can always set up a
gmail or outlook account, but then again they are all proprietory just as
are those from various providers as they all have the provider's domain. I
guess you could go and register your own domain, but that is a lot of work
and some cost to go through for an email address.

Hi Bob,

If you created an account with one of Apple's earlier services, that address
will still work, which is why me.com
addresses work. I'm pretty sure that if you're creating an account now,
though, it will be iCloud. I don't think there are any other
options.

Have you downloaded the iCloud Control Panel for your Windows PC? You need to
go to Apple’s website and download it, then install it and sign in with your
Apple Id. Now you can enable iCloud Photo Library and if you do you can specify
a folder where pictures are downloaded and all pictures you take on you r

I am curious if anyone has ever written to Winston about the possibility of

ever gotten a definitive response from him that it cannot be done. This is
the one piece of information that I feel hold voice dream back with respect

RE: Question regarding Android, and Apple music

2017-05-15 Thread rajmund

Hi,
Whether it's on topic or not, is debatable. ITunes topics are
allowed, so I can't see why the apple music app was any
different.

From: Sieghard Weitzel As long as you have your Apple Id you can certainly pay your
Dollar for the 50 Gb storage, but if you don't have any iOS
devices and only an Apple TV I don't know why you would want
iCloud storage. It is for backing up documents and photos to
iCloud and not much else.

As for your question about Android and Apple Music you would be
better off joining an Android list, it is not exactly on topic
for an iOS list. A few lists were recently posted here, if you
go to the archives and search for "Android list" I'm sure you can
find it easily enough.

Subject: Question regarding Android, and Apple music

Hello everyone,

As I mentioned in an earlier message, a few days ago, I am giving
Android a shot!

I have nothing at all against Apple products. I am learning my
Mac, and am enjoying it. Also, I will definitely keep my Apple
TV.

I just wanted to give Android a chance, and see what I think of
it. Who knows, I might end up really disliking it, and go back
to the iPhone, rather soon.

But now for a few questions, regarding Apple music.

I heard, or read, that you can use Apple music on Android.

Is this true?

If so, how does this work?

I mean, how do you still pay for it?

And how do you get the Android phone, to recognize the App?

Would I still see my library?

Can I still download music, save music, and even purchase music?

I did put the App on my phone, the other day.

However, when I tried to sign in, and enter the code I got from
my iPad, I kept being told that either my user name, or password
was incorrect. I know this is not the case at all! I know that
information, quite well.

Does anyone know what might cause this to happen?

I tried a few times, and there weren't any changes.

By the way, I would just use my iPad for Apple music. But I plan
to get rid of it, quite soon. And I don't always want to listen
to music, over my TV.

I just don't get how all this would work. Maybe this isn't the
proper place to ask. If not, please someone point me in the
right direction.

Also, I still get iCloud storage.

Will I still get this, due to having an Apple TV?

I pay a dollar for I think, 50 gigs.

Any help with any of my questions, will be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Hi all

Thanks so much for all this useful information. How do I go about linking
them through twitter.com?? I've tried going into settings and apps, but
nowhere is voiceover saying anything about connecting to Facebook. So if
someone could send me some totally idiot-proof instructions on how to do
this with voiceover I'd be so grateful. I've managed to do it the other way
round (Facebook to Twitter), and that was very very easy. However, Twitter
to Facebook doesn't appear to be as straightforward.

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi all

Apologies for cross-posting, but I'm hoping someone might know the answer
to this/be able to help me. I have a Twitter and a Facebook account, and
I'd like to be able to link the 2 so that I can simultaneously post to
both. I'm using IOS. A friend told me that it was possible, and gave me
the name of an app, TweetCaster, but when I downloaded it I found it
terribly inaccessible with VoiceOver. I then tried to look up how to do it
online, and managed to totally confuse myself with all the different
methods that came up. So I was wondering if anyone knew/could tell me of
the best way/how I can go about linking my 2 accounts? Do I need to do it
through websites?, or is there a more accessible app that will allow me to
do so?

Thanks for any help anyone can give.
