Subject: RE: the cost of staying connected

I totally agree that many want the latest and upgrading every year or every two
years is somewhat expensive. Some may argue that they have this great plan from
their provider which lets them upgrade every year, but of course if you really
look at it you will find out that no provider does this out of the goodness of
their hearts and in the end you pay through the nose for such a privilege. Then
there are those who have multiple smartphones like an Android and an iPhone in
order to "stay current with technology" or to "have the best of both worlds".
Also some have multiple iDevices and to me that is also a waste of money. At
one point I decided to keep my old 5S around and use it at home on WiFi but I
quickly realized that I rarely did and always used my new 6S Plus anyways and
while I can see how the large screen of an iPad is attractive for sighted
people, it doesn't do much for me. I have read messages on here from people who
have a very limited income yet they have an iPhone and an iPad, an Apple TV and
multiple music and TV streaming services and I sort of wonder if they don't
realize that all of this adds up to be a pretty significant cost, at the same
time some of the same people complain about some of the expensive apps like
KNFB Reader or about paying $5 a month for having a Jaws SMA (it's $120 every
two years so it does work out to be just $5 a month which is half of what most
of us pay for Apple Music or Spotify).
I think Deidre does have a point, but unless you are mostly at home where a
landline does the trick and maybe a pay as you go flipphone is enough for the
odd time you go somewhere, I think the additional cost for a smartphone plan is
justifiable considering what a smartphone offers (GPS, OCR anywhere you go,
accessible texting etc.). For anybody who is working or running a business it
is more or less essential nowadays, I need access to my email, often apps are
easier to use than websites when it comes to making a quick online banking
transaction, posting something on Facebook, tracking a package or even
maintaining your profiles for Google My Business and so on. At times I can
actually be away from my business to do something personal or recreational
simply because I am still connected and able to do something if I have to. In a
way it's not so different for a sighted person with cars. How many couples have
a car each, it costs a lot to buy the thing in the first place and thousands
and thousands each year for insurance, gas, parking and repairs/maintenance.
Especially if you live in the city you could probably get by using public
transportation and take a cab or an Uber when you have to, most of us who don't
have sighted partners who drive do it all the time. But being able to jump into
a car any time you want for a quick trip somewhere is just so convenient. I
live in a rather small town of about 6,000 people, our one local cab company
doesn't even use a meter, they charge $8 for a trip in town no matter if it's
half a mile from the grocery store back to my house or 2 miles from one side of
town to the other. If you do a return trip inside I think an hour or hour and a
half then it's $11 for both. My wife is sighted but has epilepsy so can't drive
either and we spend maybe $1,000 a year on cab rides for times when the weather
is bad, we have more than we can or want to carry etc. If we owned a car I'd
spend that alone on insurance let alone buying gas, new tires or dividing the
initial purchase price by the lifespan of the vehicle.
Interestingly enough people often buy used cars, sometimes cheap old beaters
but few of us buy a used iPhone that is 2 years old even though in many cases
it would do the trick as well and it would save you a fair bit since it is much
cheaper to buy and you could get any post-paid or pre-paid plan you want since
no carrier can ask you to sign up for a 2-year contract on some expensive plan.

Regards,
Sieghard

My observation is that people upgrade too early. If folks kept their iPhone
for four years instead of two, the annual cost of an iPhone would be
substantially reduced. I did this when I bought my iPhone 5 in 2012 and then
upgraded to an iPhone 7 in 2016, selling my iPhone 5 on Craigslist for $120.
Further, when I first started out, I did not use the phone much and had a

Hello Deidre,

In the latest version of iOS, VoiceOver no longer states that the screen is
being locked. Now, there is only a tone/chime indicating this.

The amount of time that the screen remains unlock can be configured in the

RE: the Notes App

2017-05-26 Thread deidre muccio
Thanks Mark. There are a few things I've learned in the last day out of
necessity. I never use I Cloud but maybe I will in future. In the Notes App, it
lists my gmail address, my icloud account and a few other things like folder,
all mail, or all in boxes. It then tells me how many notes I have which are not
under the above headings. I do not understand this. I also do not want to see
this list and never used to until I started sharing notes out of there to be
sure I would not lose them. Now that I have seen all the options I have for the
notes themselves, I will share or copy them shortly after I create them. I
typically dictate notes consiting of story lines and content when I am not at
my main computer. It gets tedious to transfer these into a main document later
so I need to be more organized about this in future.
I will test out saving notes on I Cloud and use the link you provided
to then look at them so I can be sure they made it there.

Hello Deidre,

Never assume anything when it comes to making backups.

Be that as it may, the best way to insure that all of your notes are saved in
their respective cloud services database, is to, using your web browser of
choice, login to your account and make certain you can see the Notes.

For example, in the case of iCloud notes, go to www.icloud.com and login to
your iCloud account. You will see a Notes icon. Select this icon and you
should see all of the notes that you have save to iCloud. If you can, in fact
see them there, then they will be available to any iOS device or Mac that uses
the same Apple ID regardless of any resets.

In the case of Google or Microsoft Notes, login to your respective accounts for
the same results.

I recommend that you only create and save notes to your iCloud account but, as
is all things, it's up to you.

Good Luck,

Mark

Me again.
Is there a way to check and see if the Notes App is part of my back up? Can I
assume it is and always will be? I am reluctant to reset the phone back to
factory defaults until I am sure they have been copied. They won't transfer to
the old 4S maybe because it has not been updated to 9._ yet.
On the 4S I don't see the Notes App listed as taking up any space.

Re: iPhone bluetooth keyboard recommendations

2017-05-26 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi Rena,

I like that Logitech 811 or the Keys2Go. I love both of them. I use them
interchangeably. I'm sorry it is the k811. There is also the Microsoft foldable
one. I have that one also. I love my keyboards you can say. If you have any
questions about any of these, let me know. I don't have the Apple one but I can
perform any of the gestures with these that I could with the Apple one. Hope
this helps.

RE: Convince me guys IOS or no IOS

2017-05-26 Thread Chip Orange
In one word ... security. Just google the phrase "ios verses android" and read
some of the top articles which discuss how much of the extant malware (over 70b
percent if I recall) exists for Android phones.

Then, read articles on how much more it costs any app developer to produce the
same app for Android phones (over 35% if I recall), and so how often app
developers decide not to develop for Android due to this (along with their
claims that it's very easy to pirate software on Android phones, so people do
much more often, so developers are losing sales).

These are the conclusions of those who are in this field, not my own, but
there's no way I'd own an Android phone if I could at all avoid it.

Hey guys. So, yeah yeah flack time…. I currently have a blackberry PRIV running
android 6.0.1, love the phone yes! But here is my question. I just got myself a
brand new shiny fast sleek MBP and the question of android or IOS is popping
into my head. I have a good while before I can afford to afford to get a new
device, but I want some input here. Other than the continuity features, please
tell me what is so great about IOS today. Please don’t tell me that its got the
best accessibility, because that is a fallacy since google is equal, but
features, useful new tools, etc just something that would actually sway me more
to looking seriously at IOS again.
thanks
Doug.

RE: All mail going into junk folder

2017-05-26 Thread M. Taylor
Terrianne,

Your question is too vague in terms of how you receive your email messages.

For example, you did not tell us the name of your email service provider.

Be that as it may, it sounds to me as though a spam filter has been enabled by
your email service provider or by one of your email clients.

I do not believe that the native iOS mail client has a junk filter but I could
be wrong on this.

Regardless, make certain that all Outlook junk filters have been disabled.

The next step will be to login to your email service provider's website and
manually configure your filters. For example, if you use iCloud then go to
www.icloud.com. For google, go to mail.google.com and for Microsoft, go to
Outlook.com.

Good Luck,

Mark

Suddenly a week ago most of my mail is going into the junk folder instead of
inbox. So none of that mail downloads into Outlook 2010 on my Windows 7

inbox, with many time consuming steps. Is there a way to tell the iPhone 6SE

Subject: Lire Closing

Hi,

With the most recent Lire update, the app closes on me as soon as I go to
launch it. I hear a message about my folders syncing, and then I get bounced
back to my home screen. Is anyone else experiencing this, and if so, how did
you go about fixing it? The app does not stop running. I can still see it in my
list of running apps, but I can't keep Voiceover focus on it. Thanks for any
help, and forgive me if someone else has already raised the issue.

Joe

RE: the Notes App

2017-05-26 Thread M. Taylor

All mail going into junk folder

Suddenly a week ago most of my mail is going into the junk folder instead of
inbox. So none of that mail downloads into Outlook 2010 on my Windows 7
desktop. The remedy has been to move the emails, one at a time, from junk
to inbox, with many time consuming steps. Is there a way to tell the iPhone
6SE to reclass these many emails?

Lire Closing

2017-05-26 Thread Joe
Hi,

With the most recent Lire update, the app closes on me as soon as I go to
launch it. I hear a message about my folders syncing, and then I get bounced
back to my home screen. Is anyone else experiencing this, and if so, how did
you go about fixing it? The app does not stop running. I can still see it in
my list of running apps, but I can't keep Voiceover focus on it. Thanks for
any help, and forgive me if someone else has already raised the issue.

Joe

the Notes App

2017-05-26 Thread deidre muccio
Me again.
Is there a way to check and see if the Notes App is part of my back up? Can
I assume it is and always will be? I am reluctant to reset the phone back to
factory defaults until I am sure they have been copied. They won't transfer
to the old 4S maybe because it has not been updated to 9._ yet.
On the 4S I don't see the Notes App listed as taking up any space.

RE: the cost of staying connected

2017-05-26 Thread deidre muccio
I hope this reply to some of Sieghard's comments isn't deemed
inappropriate since it relates to wear and tear on our devices.
I was in a store buying a microscope lens to fit over the camera lens
on my iphone. When I took the cover off the phone, the sales person just about
sneezed as some dog hair went flying. So, lesson learned, the cases need
removing frequently cause dog hair gets under there too!
I dont' have those wall hoses but wish I did! Even so I would be vacuuming
twice a day if I wanted this place relatively clean of dog hair. Years ago, I
removed almost all rugs but I've got lots of floor and a ridiculously constant
shedding dog who I groom almost every day. If she were a swimmer I'm sure the
situation would vastly improve. I don't bathe her and she never smells but
those finer hairs definitely need a brush not comb and a good hose down.
Cork floors feel nice. I thought I'd tested them out and that if they get wet
they get dangerously slippery. Is that so? You can write me privately about
that! deidreandlouise@gmail.

Hi Deidre,

First of all, no iPhone ever made starting with the original iPhone 10 years
ago had a removable battery.
Second, the new touch screens on phones like the 6S/6S Plus and 7/7 Plus are
using a different technology, they can make the hole phone thinner partly
because they can make the screen thinner, but one thing which won't happen is
hat a "layer of grime" builds up on an iPhone screen. As long as you clean the
glass it is clean, if you don't then it is not.
I also have had guide dogs for the last 23 years and yes, they do shed, dog
hair does end up in furnace filters and in computer fans a bit, of course how
much all depends on how often you brush your dog and how often you clean your
house. Carpets of course don't help which is why I have gotten rid of all
carpets in my house, the bedrooms are all cork flooring which is still warm and
as it is free-floating on the subfloor I find it quite pleasant and it is ever
so much easier to clean that, hardwood or tile. We have a central vac and even
though we have no carpets we still vacuum the floor because it picks up all the
dog hair instead of just swirling it around which is what mostly happens if you
sweep.
Anyhow, your new phone is also so much faster which also contributes to the
feeling that it is very sensitive and responsive.

Regards,
Sieghard

My new phone is silky and responsive to the slightest touch. I tried to do the
set up but got stuck when it was calling for the old sim card. btw, at the
Verizon Store they told me the Iphone 6 had no removable battery. Is that true?
The old iphone had a thick piece of glass on it and was nowhere near as
instantaneously responsive. I suppose an old phone has a build up of grime on
it even if you consistently clean it. Unfortunately I have a dog that sheds a
lot, and I have to hand it to Apple for having an ear phone jack and charging
port that has not gone dead after a year due to the hair that flies through the
air here. It doesn't even matter if I vacuum twice a day, their is almost
always a film of hair that settles on the floor even if it is not visible to
anyone. The external speakers on my Victor Reader and my GPS from Humanware
both died after a year. I would have had to pay $150 just to send one or the
other of them back to be looked at. Someone who takes apart tiny things said it
was the dog hair that had gotten in there.

Hello Sieghard
I read instructions to remove sim cards, batteries etc before returning my
phone after receiving the replacement. Since I was ignorant that I needed the
old sim card for the new phone I thought there might be a battery that needed
removing too! I googled how to extend battery life and got old files. What is
the current thinking on how to save battery life over a long period of months
and years? What I read was to turn the phone off on occasion or when not using
it. I thought I'd read here a long time ago that that is totally unecessary
with the newer lithium batteries.
