Subject: Word of caution, remote computer repair

Good evening.

I realize this may not be strictly on topic, but it’s an issue we could face
with our technology. This applies no matter what operating system our
technology is using, or no matter whether we are in the U. S. or overseas.

Having remote repair and tech support is an attractive idea, but it is frought
with operators who are less than top flight in their business dealings, even if
their work has technical merit, or in some cases are outright fraudulent. The
company I dealt with last weekend appears to fall into the former category, but
was such that they missed a chance to earn my trust and money.

It all started Saturday when doing a Google search on my Windows laptop, which
had been giving me difficulty with crashes during the last couple months and
had been sluggish for a good while. I got a pop up directing me to call Ms
Tech Support at a certain toll free number, but when I called it turned out to
be an independent firm called Itech Services, also going by, I found out later,
by the name Agile. They said they were both MS and Apple certified techs.
They then aggressively sold me into a tech support contract and took a larg
lump sum payment for everything before doing the repairs, entailing malware
removal, correction of application errors and firewall installation. These
seemed to go smoothly, though the attention to accessibility was rather
lacking, and they left my email disabled the first time, requiring a Sunday
session with them.

While giving me an invoice with the basics of the transaction, they did not
provide contract terms or fully document their work for me so I could have it
double checked both for quality and fair market value. During the follow up
they were unclear about their location, saying they were headquartered in
Virginia, but not specific about where and immediately saying email and phone
were the only available contacts. They also couldn’t clearly explain the law
for data protection they said they operate under.

All of this is to say that all these factors broke trust to the point it
negated their potential work quality and trustworthyness. So I sent them a
cancellation email yesterday detailing the types of problems I’ve listed here,
went to my bank to put in a claim on them, and got a temporary credit to my
account. Today Itech called back and I further explained my reasons for
cancellation, and eventually got an agreement for a full refund, though at
first they wanted to retain the technician charge. I said though their other
issues had negated the value. The rep I spoke to today didn’t seem at first to
understand fully my objections, saying that the more detailed information I
wanted had been sent to me, perhaps I hadn’t checked my email. I said no, all
I had gotten was the follow up emails and the digital signature message. He
also dodged around my objection that they said in the pop up they were MS Tech
Support, which was the original sin, focusing on the idea the phone number was
localized.

While it isn’t a problem in itself, everyone I had spoken to during my dealings
with them spoke English as a second language, though using American names, and I
noticed some of the emails had portions that were not standard American
English, though signed under an American sounding name from the customer
service department.

If they had been better at adhering to what should be standard business
practice, especially in this sensitive field, I may have been willing to
negotiate with them.

So while this appears to have not caused any serious harm, caution is clearly
advised.

Bill Outman

Daytona Beach, fFlorida, U. S. A.

I might have been willing to negotiate with them if they had been more above
board, rather than sloppy and perhaps borderline illegal.

RE: Touch ID & Passcode

2017-08-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Mike,

I suggest that this is, in fact, an error message.

As I do not know the history of your device, I would argue that it was
physically damaged, sometime in the past, and was not properly repaired. There
is no need for you to confirm this for, regardless, I recommend that you
contact Apple as some kind of maintenance is required.

The only other recommendation I can offer, short of contacting Apple, would be
to install a fresh copy of iOS on the device via iTunes. If such a step did
not resolve the issue, then I would argue that your device has been seriously
compromised and I, personally, would never use such a device for fear of having
my personal data exposed.

Good Luck,

Mark

Speech rate

2017-08-11 Thread Jewel
I had speech rate set at 55% or thereabouts, and then, suddenly, it dropped to
zero.
I switched on the rotor in the game that I was engaged in, but it showed me
only 3 settings,
words/characters/ headings, with the very briefest of mentions to there being a
speech rate setting,
but, apparently, it was there in name only because when I stopped the rotor at
where speech rate was
said to be hiding, the phone completely ignored my flick and passed on to the
next setting.
Having failed to correct it within the game, I betook myself to iPhone settings
and started again to
look for the rotor, in general/accessibility/voice-over/speech rate, but the
rotor, itself, I
couldn't find.
I had speech rate so I opened that but found that the options of choice of rate
I was given came in
increments of 10%. Now 50 was tolerable but a bit on the funereal side, while
60% was much too
fast.
Is it possible to reset the choice of speech rate to increments of less than
10%?
Oh! in case it is of any significance, I am running IOS10.3.3.

Re: IPad Pro 10.5

2017-08-11 Thread Victor Gouveia
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this or not, but are you aware of the
different types of USB ports on your computer?

A good rule of thumb is to get the specifications of your computer, and see
what type of ports they are, whether they are USB 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, USB C, and
I forget the other kind.

If you have an older computer, then it might be possible that you have the
former, USB 1.0, and those types of USB ports do not charge devices, they
only form an attachment to your device from your computer.

USB 2.0 is the standard type of port that started charging, but even those
were often hit or miss in the early years. It wasn't until the later years
that 2.0 became the standard, followed quickly by the USB 3.0, which is what
most computers come with these days.

In any case, see what sort of ports you have, and go from there.

I would not trust some guy on the phone, especially if the iPad comes
standard with a USB cable. It simply can't be there for just transferring
from iTunes.

Hello all,
I purchased an iPad Pro 10.5 inch latest model last Thursday. The iPad works
well and charges perfectly when connected with the wall plug into an outlet.
My question however, is when I plugged in my iPad to my computer it said not

computer cannot provide enough power to charge the iPad. I wanted to find
out if that has been anybody else's experience? or if I should swap out the

RE: choosing an option when receiving a call

2017-08-11 Thread M. Taylor
Hello John,

By soft keypad, I simply meant the default keypad that is used on iPHone as
opposed to a Bluetooth hardware keyboard.

No, I do not find anything confusing about listening to the various
sounds/VoiceOver during the selection prompts. In fact, I just confirmed an
upcoming doctor appointment, about 20 minutes ago, and found it easy enough.

I'll say this, it does take some getting used to, in comparison to the
old-style legacy phones that were the standard over 10 years ago.

I think it just takes practice.

Hello John,

I believe you are referring to a phone tree.

I receive such calls often, on my iPhone 6 Plus; for example to confirm
upcoming doctor appointments. To date, I can easily hear the numbers on the
iPhone soft keypad, before selecting an option. When moving my finger around
the keypad, I hear VoiceOver say the digit, currently in focus.

The only challenge I have, sometimes, is when I take such a call with a
headset. This is because the screen will lock while I’m waiting for the
appropriate prompt to be offered. My workaround is to frequently touch a
corner of the display in order to keep it awake.

No more random calls: Uber adds in-app chat feature - CNET
Uber
Random calls and texts from unknown numbers that may or may not be the Uber
you're waiting for could be a thing of the past with the announcement of
Uber's new in-app chat feature.
The chat function is primarily designed to send the driver instructions
about conditions and the pickup location, for example. For safety reasons,
the chats are read aloud to the driver who can respond with a simple "thumbs
up."
The chat function is available from within the Uber app's feed (Contact >
Chat), and both rider and driver will receive confirmation when their chats
are sent and read.
As a result, riders and drivers no longer need to share their phone numbers
in order to get in touch. Uber says "in-app chat is rolling out globally to
both riders and drivers over the coming weeks."
A representative for Uber told CNET that several countries already had
anonymization technology.
"That means when you would SMS or call your driver outside the app (and vice
versa), you would be using a random number. This was not available
everywhere, which is why this feature is helpful since it standardizes the
experience," she said.
Uber, meanwhile, remains without a CEO. Co-founder and former CEO Travis
Kalanick won't be retaking his chief executive crown, The Wall Street
Journal reported earlier this week.

5 phone accessories that make travel easier - CNET

5 phone accessories that make travel easier - CNET
Your phone is already the hub of every trip you take: the carrier of
boarding passes and hotel reservations; the holder of books and movies to
help pass the time; the conduit through which travel photos are shared on
social media.
All by itself, it makes travel easier. But with a few key accessories, you
can travel more easily with your phone. Let's take a look at the items worth
adding to your carry-on bag.

A mobile charger with wall prongs
Some mobile chargers, like this one from MyCharge, have built-in wall prongs
and cables.
Here's a no-brainer: You need a mobile power bank to keep your phone
running. These come in all shapes and sizes, but the vast majority require
you to BYO wall plug so you can recharge the charger. That's a hassle: one
more thing to remember, one more thing cluttering up your bag.
That's why I always choose a charger that can plug right into the wall. For
example, the Romoss UP10 (currently $30 on Amazon) features a 10,000mAh
battery, dual USB ports (a 1-amp and a 2.1-amp) and folding wall prongs. And
it can charge your phone while it's plugged in and recharging itself.
More convenient still, the MyCharge HubPlus series provides power, wall
prongs and built-in charge cables: Apple Lightning and Micro-USB, for
example, or Micro-USB and USB-C. Of course, there's also a standard USB port
for connecting your own cable if need be. These are pricey, usually between
$60 and $100, but also compact and super-convenient.

A 2-in-1 sync/charge cable
The Zeus Dual Charger magically fuses a Lightning and Micro-USB connector
onto the same plug.
Zeus
One cable to rule them all. That's the idea behind the Zeus Dual Charger, a
fairly standard-looking USB cord -- except that it has a Micro-USB and
Lightning connector integrated onto a single plug!
I've never seen this before; most 2-in-1 cables just have two separate tips
(usually with one nested into the other or the two side-by-side). Here
you've got a single braided 6-foot cable that can plug into an Apple device
or just about anything else. The Zeus sells for $20.
Is that any better than, say, a dual-plug cable like this one from Nkomax?
Actually, the latter lets you charge two devices simultaneously, so it's
probably the more logical choice. Whatever you decide: one cable is better
than two!

A good gripper
The Ungrip is the kind of product that helps prevent accidental phone drops.
Travel means a lot of phone handling. It's in and out of your pocket or
purse all day; it's clutched for dear life while you dash to catch your
flight. All that hustle and bustle greatly increases the risk of dropping
your phone -- and that could sour your trip right quick.
Solution: Get a better grip on your phone. There are a variety of products
-- most priced under $20, many under $10 -- that stick to the back of your
phone or case and give you a much more secure grip. I'm partial to the Ninja
Loop (about $5) and Ungrip (about $10), which are notable for their
versatility and comfort, respectively.

A good pen
This pen is mightier than, well, other pens.
Ace Teah
Wait, a pen? Yeah, you know: that thing you write with sometimes. How can a
pen make travel easier? When it's also a stylus. And a kickstand.
Like this one: the Ace Teah 3-in-1. A longtime favorite of mine, this
thick-barreled pen is not only comfy to write with, but also nice to, er,
stylus with. (Flip it over and you can use the capacitive tip to scribble on
your screen.) Better still, it has a built-in phone stand that can even
accommodate a phone in a case. Now you've got a way to prop up the screen
when you want to watch a movie or read a book. A mere six bucks buys you a
pack of six pens in assorted happy colors.

A car mount
Traveling by car? For long trips in particular, when you're likely to be
relying on navigation apps, listening to podcasts and so on, it's critical
to keep your phone out of your lap or center console and up near eye level.
That's not only for easier screen access, but also for safety.
I'm partial to magnetic mounts, but there are a lots of different options.
Check out this roundup of three ways to dashboard-mount your phone.
What phone-related travel accessories do you consider essential? Share your
picks in the comments!

Rob, Rob, Rob!

Thank you ever so much.

I had literally encountered this problem mere moments before reading your post

I am delighted to say that the zip file worked perfectly for me.

I am in your debt, my friend.

Subject: Solution For iCloud No Longer Works With Outlook 2007

I am passing on this problem and solution in case anyone else has the same
problem.

I use Outlook 2007 on my PC and iCloud to sync my calendar and contacts with my
iPhone. I suddenly lost access to my iCloud calendar on the PC.

When I tried to open the calendar or any other iCloud folder on the PC, I
received the following error:
The set of folders cannot be opened. An unexpected error has occurred. MAPI was
unable to load the information service
C:\PROGRA~2\COMMON~1\Apple\INTERN~1\APLZOD.dll. Be sure the service is
correctly installed and configured.

A Google search included the following page:
https://www.msoutlook.info/question/icloud-and-outlook-2007-support

Microsoft introduced the problem in the June security update. The solution
involves adding a new entry in the Windows registry. If you encounter this
problem, read the web page sited above and follow the instructions.

Download the zip file and unzip (extract) the files into a new folder.
Double click or press "Enter" on the file called
AllowUnregisteredMapiServices.reg
You have to press "Enter" a couple of times to accept messages asking is it ok
to modify the Windows Registry.

After that, I could access my calendar and contacts.

Hope this helps someone.

Hi,
With all due respect I find this account somewhat confusing. It is unclear
whether you were researching providers of this sort of service or something
other. Either way I can’t fathom why you’d call any number that would be
offered to you via a pop-up. And given that both Microsoft and Apple both have
help desks offering support to those with vision impairments using assistive
technology why one wouldn’t start there when seeking a resolution is beyond me.
Either way I hope post incidents all security scans turn up normal and that
there’s no other nefarious activity associated with your accounts.

Re: EMojis and the rotor

2017-08-11 Thread Chris Chaffin
Wayne,
I have been playing with the EMoji feature on the rotor, and need some help.
I have noticed that it will give you some EMojis, but not all of them that deal
with a particular thing. For example, I was trying to get the EMoji, smiling
face with stuck out tongue, so I put the word tongue in the edit box, and it
only gave me 2 choices, an actual tongue and a face with stuck out tongue, but
no smiling face with stuck out tongue.
Do you know what is needed to get the EMoji, Smiling face with stuck out tongue?

Still wondering if all EMojis are available using the rotor.

Re: EMojis and the rotor

2017-08-11 Thread Wayne Merritt
Actually, you can search for an emoji by name, you just go about it a
little different. Write in the text field what you are looking for,
like home for instance. Then when you double tap the emoji keyboard
button in the lower left, if you put your focus back on the edit box,
VoiceOver will say, "Edit field, is editing, emoji replacements
available." Your focus will already be on the emoji rodar item, but if
not then turn the rodar till yu get there. Then, just flick up/down
until you hear the type of emoji you want. If you wrote something
broad like home, you may get a pop up menu with several choices of
kinds of homes, like house with yard, or something else. Swipe to the
right to see the various choices an then double tap. After you do this
a few times, these emojis will appear ont the recent emoji page. This
sure beats scrolling through the always expanding emoji pages looking
for that one special symbol. I haven't searched for smiley faces, but
if you try entering smile or smiley face in text, then switch to
emoji, you would likely get the smiley emojis.

Good luck and have fun,
Wayne

Re: EMojis and the rotor

2017-08-11 Thread Donna
There is no way to search for an emoji by name. The on screen emoji keyboard is
seperated into categories. This makes searching for an emoji easy. The
Frequently used tab has 30 of the most frequently used emojis. The most used of
the 30 emojis are in the list first.

Re: tunein radio app

2017-08-11 Thread Richard Turner

I've had issues for several days of it only playing some podcast or other that
I didn't sign up for and I cannot get into my stations.
Fortunately, I mostly listen to various BBC channels, which I can do with the
iPlayer app.
They are so impossible to get in touch with I'm about to delete the app.

Solution For iCloud No Longer Works With Outlook 2007

2017-08-11 Thread Rob
I am passing on this problem and solution in case anyone else has the same
problem.

I use Outlook 2007 on my PC and iCloud to sync my calendar and contacts with
my iPhone. I suddenly lost access to my iCloud calendar on the PC.

When I tried to open the calendar or any other iCloud folder on the PC, I
received the following error:

The set of folders cannot be opened. An unexpected error has occurred. MAPI
was unable to load the information service
C:\PROGRA~2\COMMON~1\Apple\INTERN~1\APLZOD.dll. Be sure the service is
correctly installed and configured.

A Google search included the following page:

https://www.msoutlook.info/question/icloud-and-outlook-2007-support

Microsoft introduced the problem in the June security update. The solution
involves adding a new entry in the Windows registry. If you encounter this
problem, read the web page sited above and follow the instructions.

Download the zip file and unzip (extract) the files into a new folder.

Double click or press "Enter" on the file called
AllowUnregisteredMapiServices.reg

You have to press "Enter" a couple of times to accept messages asking is it
ok to modify the Windows Registry.

After that, I could access my calendar and contacts.

Hope this helps someone.

Rob Armstrong

EMojis and the rotor

2017-08-11 Thread Chris Chaffin
Have a question regarding EMojis.
After entering text, you can switch the rotor to EMojis, and it will let you
know any EMojis that fit anything you have typed, like pizza. I was wondering
if anyone knows the words to use for the different faces like smiley face?
Even though I like the EMoji feature on the rotor, it seems very limited. It
could be a very quick way of finding what you are looking for if it worked with
all of the EMojis.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Hi All

This is IPhone related but further down.

Tesco have just revamped their grocery website which the accessability is now
really bad.

Can people recommend Sainsbury, Morrisons or ASDA?

And related to this e-mail list. If their website is accessable how accessable
are their IPhone apps.

Pulling photos from Facebook for contacts

2017-08-11 Thread Jim Portillo
Good morning,

Does anyone know how I can get the photos for people in my contacts list
from Facebook?

Usually, it would be that Facebook would give me the option of updating my
contacts without having to have it actually access all my contacts all the
time. It would be a onetime thing.

Now, when I add contacts to my list and know they're on Facebook, their
photos or information won't appear even if I use the update feature.

Thoughts? Jim

Re: Facebook

2017-08-11 Thread Davy Cuppens

Hi Lynda

Take your fb app.
Go to the more tab.
Sweep to the right until you hear friends button. Doubleclick on that.
Select a friend you want.
Open its profile.
Select the friend button and take the option Edit lists. I hope it is that
option because I am a Dutch speaker and translated it into English. Maybe
it's a bit different.
You get a bunch of lists that fb made for yourselves. Now you can select the
acquaintance list.
There is another list the last one it is called restricted or not accessible
freely translated. In this list you could place persons like your boss,
collegues or other perople of which you don't want to see all of your posts.
When you are posting to friends only, they cannot see those posts. If you
post thing in public everybody can see this post, even those in that
restricted list.

Regards
Davy

The Apple Rep. is corect.
The amperage from the computer is probably not high enough to charge the iPad.

Re: an issue with the facebook apps and viewing groups

2017-08-11 Thread Donna
Facebook Groups haven't been moved. After launching the app, tap on More
located in the bottom right corner, swipe down to groups. For some weird
reason, most likely my internet connection, I had to turn off wifi & let
Facebook load the page, then everything with Facebook worked fine when I turned
wifi back on.

Yes, swiping up with three fingers until you're at the top helps,
although somehow that can also get you lost in a sea of posts from
several days ago, so it's not organized from most recent to oldest. So
frustrating, and often why I don't update unless I have to, or unless
I'm foolish, which was the case this time.

I can quite believe it, and at least it had the good grace to tell you, and not
try, and blow the computer system in the doing. I
dispare of some of the idiot gadgets invented to run off the usb power circuit
so needlessly; fans, coffee warmers, desk lights,
things nothing to do with data connections at all.

Buy a powered usb hub which can power and charge and still provide connection
to the pc.

Hello all,
I purchased an iPad Pro 10.5 inch latest model last Thursday. The iPad works
well and charges perfectly when connected with the wall
plug into an outlet. My question however, is when I plugged in my iPad to my
computer it said not charging. I was told by an Apple
representative that according to them the computer cannot provide enough power
to charge the iPad. I wanted to find out if that has
been anybody else's experience? or if I should swap out the iPad for another
one ?
