RE: Eclipse Soundscapes app, was: Audio Description of the total eclipse

2017-08-19 Thread Cristóbal
I was fortunate enough to experience a full eclipse in 1991 before losing my
sight.

I may download this out of curiosity, but being blind, I don’t know how or what
could be conveyed for such a visual event. Still though, good that something’s
being offered I guess.

Being in Southern California, I think we’re only going to get two-thirds of the
sun blocked out. Nevertheless, it’s still something.

Subject: Eclipse Soundscapes app, was: Audio Description of the total eclipse

There is also an app called “Eclipse Soundscapes” which was developed primarily
for blind/visually impaired users. Here is an article from CBC News:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/technology-allows-visually-impaired-blind-to-experience-solar-eclipse-1.4250318

The app store link for Eclipse Soundscapes is as follows, description of the
app follows the link:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/eclipse-soundscapes/id1262152991?mt=8

Description:

The Eclipse Soundscapes Project app is specially designed so that people who
are blind and visually impaired can share in the awe and wonder of astronomical
events in real time with their sighted peers.

The app is a joint effort between The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory
(SAO), NASA’s Heliophysics Education Consortium (HEC), the National Center for
Accessible Media (NCAM), and the National Park Service (NPS). Features include
an interactive “Rumble map”; audio descriptions of key features of the eclipse;
a play-by-play description of the total solar eclipse as it is happening in the
user’s area; and a countdown clock to the next upcoming eclipse.

The “Rumble Map” gives the user the sensation of “feeling” the Sun during an
eclipse. Our technology translates images of key eclipse features into a series
of unique frequency modulated tones that map out variations in light and dark
as the user explores the image with their fingertips. These tones are specially
designed to make the user’s mobile device shake, or rumble, in response to the
changes.

After the eclipse, the Eclipse Soundscapes app will provide access to a
database of soundscape recordings from U.S. National Parks and other urban and
rural locations so that users can experience how eclipses change the behavior
of different species, including humans. During the next five years, the app
will expand to include other eclipses and astronomical objects of interest
giving people who are blind and visually impaired – and everyone else – a new
way to engage with the universe around them.

Regards,

Sieghard

Audio Description to Allow the Blind To “See” the Total Eclipse

WASHINGTON, August 10, 2017 - The Audio Description Project, an initiative of
the American Council of the Blind (ACB), along with the Mid-Tennessee Council
of the Blind, the Tennessee School for the Blind and the Tennessee Performing
Arts Center, announces an opportunity for blind people world-wide to experience
the upcoming total eclipse of the sun.

On Monday afternoon, August 21, at exactly 1:27 p.m. (CDT), the Sun above
Nashville, TN will disappear from view. The sky will go completely dark. But
through the use of succinct, imaginative and vivid language–audio
description–the event will be accessible to the millions of people who are
blind or have low vision, or anyone who wishes to experience a verbal version
of the visual.

Between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm (CDT) on August 21, Dr. Joel Snyder will host “A
Total Eclipse—Audio Described!” on ACB Radio.
Snyder, the director of ACB’s Audio Description Project, will present an hour
of songs (“Ain’t Got No Sunshine,” “Here Comes The Sun,” “Blinded by the
Light,” “When The Sun Goes Down,” etc.) interviews and special guests—with the
main event being described live from the Tennessee School for the Blind between
1:15 pm and 1:45 pm (CDT).
Trained audio describer, Nashville-based Julia Cawthon will describe the
eclipse as it happens and provide a vivid “translation” of the visual event
into words for the benefit of anyone who tunes in.

“Audio Description uses the spoken word to provide access to visual images that
would otherwise not be accessible to people who are blind or have low vision,”
stated Kim Charlson, president of the

Yes, I can confirm that this is true. We often start filling it one day and
finish it on another day. Sometimes, though, an item that was available
when you started filling your cart may not be available on the day you place
the order, but it will tell you that so you can substitute something else.

One has to do with Prime Pantry, the other just prime. Prime Pantry is only
one choice under prime. I can see where it could be useful, but I generally
order strictly using Prime shipping when possible.

I also use Subscribe and Save allot. It’s a pretty good saving!

I want. My husband does drive but has been having major medical issues with his
back. The shipping cost to me is very minimal to get the items delivered to my
door.

Kay, I don’t know about what happens in the US as I’m in the
UK, what Paul is describing doesn’t happen here products ordered with Amazon
prime get individually unless you order nor than thing at a time, in which case
they may come together.4

Thanks Sieghard for posting that. I thought I had already done that, but
looking back, it hadn’t sent.
The Eclipse Soundscapes app is quite impressive and they plan to do other
eclipses and possibly other astronomical events in the future.
IN th app, there is a list of upcoming events. There are lots of partial
eclipse coming up as well as a few more total eclipses around the world.

Features include
an interactive “Rumble map”; audio descriptions of key features of the eclipse;
a play-by-play description of the total solar eclipse as it is happening in the
user’s area; and a countdown clock to the next upcoming eclipse.

Snyder, the director of ACB’s Audio Description Project, will present an hour

Light,” “When The Sun Goes Down,” etc.) interviews and special guests—with the
main event being described live from the Tennessee School for the Blind between
1:15 pm and 1:45 pm (CDT).
Trained audio describer, Nashville-based Julia Cawthon will describe the
eclipse as it happens and provide a vivid “translation” of the visual event
into words for the benefit of anyone who tunes in.
“Audio Description uses the spoken word to provide access to visual images that

2017-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have used one called Classifieds Pro Free for Craigslist by Impala Studios
and if I remember correctly it worked quite well. I was able to post my wife's
iPhone 6 last fall when we wanted to sell it and it was accessible. On another
note I'll never do this again because we probably received 40 messages and all
except for 1 or 2 were fraud attempts and all went something like this:

"Do you still have iPhone? My fiancee works as a missionary in west Africa and
I want to send her the phone, I'll pay you via Paypal and add $100 for shipping
if that is acceptable".
I'll never waste my time again posting anything on Craigslist, especially not
an iPhone.

Well I did do this and it's fine now but the thing is, I didn't change
the rotor. It was fine yesterday morning, and all of a sudden lastn
ight it was changed to read punctuation, I didn't change it.
I don't know how it got changed. Thanks to everyone.
I'll blame it on my cat.

You probably had the rotor turned to punctuation and then flicked up or down
and changed it to All. Just turn the rotor again to punctuation and flick until
it's set to Some or Most, you have to try it out and see which level of
punctuation you like.

You could also try turning your rotor to punctuation, and flicking up until you
get the desired amount desired amount of punctuation you choose. If that

Eclipse Soundscapes app, was: Audio Description of the total eclipse

2017-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There is also an app called "Eclipse Soundscapes" which was developed primarily
for blind/visually impaired users. Here is an article from CBC News:
http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/technology-allows-visually-impaired-blind-to-experience-solar-eclipse-1.4250318
The app store link for Eclipse Soundscapes is as follows, description of the
app follows the link:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/eclipse-soundscapes/id1262152991?mt=8
Description:
The Eclipse Soundscapes Project app is specially designed so that people who
are blind and visually impaired can share in the awe and wonder of astronomical
events in real time with their sighted peers.
The app is a joint effort between The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory
(SAO), NASA's Heliophysics Education Consortium (HEC), the National Center for
Accessible Media (NCAM), and the National Park Service (NPS). Features include
an interactive "Rumble map"; audio descriptions of key features of the eclipse;
a play-by-play description of the total solar eclipse as it is happening in the
user's area; and a countdown clock to the next upcoming eclipse.
The "Rumble Map" gives the user the sensation of "feeling" the Sun during an
eclipse. Our technology translates images of key eclipse features into a series
of unique frequency modulated tones that map out variations in light and dark
as the user explores the image with their fingertips. These tones are specially
designed to make the user's mobile device shake, or rumble, in response to the
changes.
After the eclipse, the Eclipse Soundscapes app will provide access to a
database of soundscape recordings from U.S. National Parks and other urban and
rural locations so that users can experience how eclipses change the behavior
of different species, including humans. During the next five years, the app
will expand to include other eclipses and astronomical objects of interest
giving people who are blind and visually impaired - and everyone else - a new
way to engage with the universe around them.

Audio Description to Allow the Blind To "See" the Total Eclipse
WASHINGTON, August 10, 2017 - The Audio Description Project, an initiative of
the American Council of the Blind (ACB), along with the Mid-Tennessee Council
of the Blind, the Tennessee School for the Blind and the Tennessee Performing
Arts Center, announces an opportunity for blind people world-wide to experience
the upcoming total eclipse of the sun.
On Monday afternoon, August 21, at exactly 1:27 p.m. (CDT), the Sun above
Nashville, TN will disappear from view. The sky will go completely dark. But
through the use of succinct, imaginative and vivid language-audio
description-the event will be accessible to the millions of people who are
blind or have low vision, or anyone who wishes to experience a verbal version
of the visual.
Between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm (CDT) on August 21, Dr. Joel Snyder will host "A
Total Eclipse-Audio Described!" on ACB Radio.
Snyder, the director of ACB's Audio Description Project, will present an hour
of songs ("Ain't Got No Sunshine," "Here Comes The Sun," "Blinded by the
Light," "When The Sun Goes Down," etc.) interviews and special guests-with the
main event being described live from the Tennessee School for the Blind between
1:15 pm and 1:45 pm (CDT).
Trained audio describer, Nashville-based Julia Cawthon will describe the
eclipse as it happens and provide a vivid "translation" of the visual event
into words for the benefit of anyone who tunes in.
"Audio Description uses the spoken word to provide access to visual images that
would otherwise not be accessible to people who are blind or have low vision,"
stated Kim Charlson, president of the American Council of the Blind. "Audio
describers help make so many aspects of our culture accessible. We're delighted
to sponsor this program on August 21 and help people experience this important
event."
How to access the broadcast:
Go to http://acbradio.org/interactive and select "Click Here to Play." Then be
sure to select the link that opens the player that you use to listen to music
or stream internet radio stations.
You can also listen on any telephone by dialing 605-475-8130 and select option
4. If you are using an iOS device such as an iPad or iPhone, install "ACB
Link"; open the app, select the radio tab and then tap on the menu button.
Select "live streams" and "ACB Radio Interactive", select the play button and
the stream will launch.

RE: Notifications on lock screen skipping password when tapped-Help!

2017-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sherry,

Can you describe exactly what you do? I mean how do you wake up your phone to
look at the notification? Do you press the home button or the sleep/power
button? My guess is that you put your touch Id finger on the home button to
press it and that then tapping on the notification unlocks your phone because
it has already read your fingerprint. There is no way such an obvious bypass
would have not been long since discovered and fixed. My guess is there is
another explanation.

Sieghard

Subject: Notifications on lock screen skipping password when tapped-Help!

I have a 6 digit password set on my iPhone 6S running the latest IOS. I enjoy
getting the news notifications and others on the locked screen. What I just
discovered is that double tapping on a news article or even a message takes me
directly to the app without the necessity to put my fingerprint or password.
Then the app can be closed and the phone is totally available for regular use.
In other words it totally bypasses the security.
I went to Password in the Settings and made sure it was set to immediately and
all of the other choices except Siri were turned off. I left Siri on because I
often use it to place calls.
This situation bypassing the security does not seem right to me. I did do a
restart on the phone with no change.

How can it be so easy to bypass the security. Does this happen to anyone else?
I did not realize that tapping a notice would open the phone until just
recently. Tapping a reminder asks for a password. I really hate to turn off
all notifications on the locked screen since I like to be informed.
What can I do?

RE: Battery issue.

2017-08-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you had a new battery put in this year you could be using this phone for the
next 3 or 4 years, of course it's another thing whether you want to or rather
get the newest this fall or next fall. I have a friend who bought an iPhone 3GS
in 2009, he used it until he bought a 5S in 2013, so 4 years, now his 5S is 4
years old. I guess if you can afford it and like the latest I can see why
somebody would want a new phone every year or two, I am also guilty of that and
never had a phone for more than 2 years since I bought my first phone, an
iPhone 4 in 2010. That phone I only had for 1 year because when Apple released
the 4S in 2011 with SIRI support I really wanted to have a phone which allowed
me to use SIRI. Then I also bought a 5S 2 years later in 2013 and a 6S another
two years later in 2015. I lost that 6S a few months after I got it and since I
had insurance which paid for the full purchase price I upgraded to a 6S PluS
and this will be the first time I am going to keep my phone for a third year. I
have no intensions to buy a 7S or 7S Plus and certainly won't buy the new
premium phone whatever the name will be since according to the rumours it would
most likely be a $1,500 phone here in Canada once the taxes are added and all
that.
We just had to put a new roof on our house and decided to buy a new sofa/love
seat/recliner set so for this year our budget is done. If I were to buy a new
phone I'm sure I'd probably want the new premium phone, but of course it will
have a lot of new technology if the rumours are correct so it might anyways be
better to wait a year until they fix some of the bugs this will most likely
include. Let's see how this rumoured face recognition works first when it comes
to unlocking the phone and see if Touch Id is still an option as well or if the
face recognition together with a passcode is the only way to unlock the phone.
I also have a feeling that many average users who are not techi people or
people who like the latest gadgets are starting to upgrade less often. Smart
phones have matured a lot, there is less radical change and I am starting to
feel this way, too. The high-end phones whether iPhone or Android, cost as much
or more as most of us pay for a laptop and almost nobody I know buys a new
laptop each year or even every two years, many buy a laptop and use it for 4 or
5 years or even longer. There is no reason why one can't use a phone for at
least 3 or maybe 4 years, batteries typically are quite good for about 3 years
and after that you just have to charge a bit more often or supplement with an
external battery or battery case.

Regards,
Sieghard

If the 6S was purchased in September or October of 2015 it could be one of the
ones that had a battery problem from the factory. There is a website where you
can check the serial number to see if it qualifies for a battery replacement
from Apple. I was having various battery problems with mine and last April the
battery was replaced for free by Apple since it was on the list of the affected
phones. I got mine the day they came out and am thrilled to have gotten a new
battery last April. I figure I can get at least an extra year out of my phone.
I found the website to check the serial number by doing a Google search.
Sorry I don't remember more.

You should be able to recalibrate the battery by letting it run all the way
down and then charging it all the way back up. You may need to do this two or
three tiems.

RE: No input

2017-08-19 Thread Debby
Hi Antonio,

Just a thought, do you have a case on your phone with a built-in screen
protector? One day a friend of mine was having the same problem you describe,
and when I removed her case with its screen protector, it was a mess in there.
Both the protector and the iPhone screen had sticky spots. Obviously something
had spilled on or around the phone. I cleaned it up and put the case back on
and all was fine! Hope that is the problem!

Hi Antonio,

It sounds like your screen is broken. Something similar happened to my daughter
a month or so ago, and the screen had to be replaced.

Good luck,
Anna
