Hello Larry,

Many of Androids most popular devices, for many, many years, have not used a
physical Home button. Instead, they use soft, or on-screen) navigation
buttons located on the bottom row of the display. Unlike the S8 series,
however, these navigation buttons were always available. This is to say,
they did not scroll off the display.

Until the S 8 series, Samsung was the only major brand that used a physical
Home button on all of its Android devices.

None of my Android phones, with the exception of the S 6, have physical Home
buttons; so I am no stranger to the technology. However, I strongly believe
that because of its physical Home button, I tended to gravitate towards my S
6 more than the others.

Anyway, in the case of the new s 8 series, there is a soft home button
located in the center bottom row of the display.
With the S 8, unfortunately, the Home button can scroll off the screen.
This is kind of a pain, to say the least--especially when one wishes to
quickly return to his/her starting point.

Apple tends to implement new technology with more flare and feasibility than
its competition. Let's hope it continues that standard.

Hello Everyone,

I hope you find the following article interesting.

As for me, I can tell you that I definitely miss a physical Home button,
with integrated Touch ID, on the Samsung Galaxy S 8, so much so, that I have
reverted back to my Galaxy S 6.

If Apple does remove a bezel-based Home button, I certainly hope that it
comes up with a better design solution than Samsung.

When Apple unveils its new high-end iPhone on Sept. 12, it's widely expected
to do away with the most iconic part of its handset: the home button. If the
rumors are true, the all-screen design of the so-called iPhone 8 means no
room for a bottom bezel, and thus no room for a physical home button (and
its Touch ID fingerprint sensor). It will be the biggest design change to

Here's the funny thing: The iPhone's home button is already gone. Instead of
a physical button, 2016's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus featured a solid-state panel
that used subtle vibration to simulate a button press. It initially drew
mixed opinions: some felt the click was weird; others liked the haptic

It feels a bit like a real button, but it's not. And maybe that's how the

feel the same as pressing in on the solid-state home button does now. The
bigger problem, of course, becomes how to relocate that Touch ID fingerprint
sensor -- or come up with a replacement. (More on that below.)
Control Center is an app launcher away from being the home button
replacement
iPhones currently stick four apps at the bottom of the home screen, locking
them in place as you swipe to additional pages: useful, but inefficient.
Swiping up for the Control Center usually accomplishes more, getting to
settings and even some app shortcuts fast. Control Center is getting
expanded in iOS 11, where it now offers a single page of user-configurable
widgets and switches. But if that same updated Control Center page had a
mini dock at the bottom for those same apps -- and/or a virtual home button
-- it would basically be a one-stop shortcut. The problem with exiling the
home button to the dock, though, is that it turns a single action --
pressing the handy home button that we have now -- into a two-step process:
swiping first and then clicking the screen.
3D Touch could be better utilized for home screen shortcuts
It still feels like the variable pressure-sensitive 3D Touch technology that
iPhones 6S and later use is way underutilized, to the point where it feels
unnecessary. But what if pressing down on the home screen opened up
sublayers, or app folders beneath? Maybe pressing down on the bottom of the
screen could launch back to the home area, or Control Center. 3D Touch is
there, and it's theoretically versatile... now Apple just needs to put it to
better use.

One-screen access to everything: is this is the post-home-button home
screen?
Sarah Tew/CNET
iOS 11 on the iPad could be a preview of a no-home button iPhone
The iPad has already started exploring new ways of navigation in iOS 11.
(The beta has been out since June, and the final version will likely be
available in mid-September.) The app dock adds a lot of favorite apps for
quick shortcuts, making better use of the iPad's additional screen real
estate. It's not a massive change, but it's better than what it was in iOS
10, and better than the Touch Bar on recent MacBook Pros. The swipe-up app
dock could be a model for what the iPhone 8 app area looks like. Maybe
something on a smaller scale, with nested menus? I just want

Subject: Possible Disruption of Dropbox Support for Some iOS Text Editors

Hello, everyone.

If I understand correctly, Dropbox will cease using its present API
sometime in September, which may cause certain iOS text editors not to
transfer files to Dropbox. If this is true, I assume this is a
problem that text editor developers are working to solve.
Unfortunately, a friend wrote to the AccessNote developer about what
was being done and has received no reply. This is consonant with my
experience with a lack of a response from AFB about AccessNote
support.

Is my assumption about the Dropbox API correct? If so, which editor
developerss are taking the matter in hand?

Thank you for all help.

Craig

I've never seen much in the way of discounts with Uber, but with Lyft, every

In Lyft, after your trip has been accepted, swipe through the screen
and look for the contact button. Once you choose this, you can pick
how you want to contact the driver. In my experience, I always contact
the driver of whatever service ahead of time. A lot of times I will
get an automated response that the driver is unable to respond because
they are driving, but I also then get a personal response from them
later acknowledging my message. I prefer Lyft for the ease of use, but
Uber is easier to schedule a ride ahead of time. Also, in Austin TX.,
it seems like Lyft does not go through surge pricing as often as Uber.
Finally, I frequently get discounts on both services, but Lyft often
gives me a $5 discount. Going home, that takes my trip cost from about
$7 to $2, or less. Awesome!

Here in St. Louis, we have both services, and both work equally well.
Many drivers work for both companies, this is not considered a conflict
of interest since the drivers are really contractors for each company.
Both apps are accessible. Both apps allow you to call or text the
driver if necessary. One thing I would suggest, enter the place where
you want to be picked up, don't rely on the location provided by the
phone's GPS, it's usually not accurate enough. Both apps will give you
a price estimation before booking the trip. One thing is for sure, both
services are much better than the cab companies around here. With a
cab, you call them and it's pretty much, we'll be there when we get
there, might be 5 minutes or it could be an hour. With Uber and Lyft,
you know how far the closest driver is and neither one has ever taken
longer than 10 minutes, usually shorter.

Hey guys,

OK, i wanted some input here on a few things with uber and lift? What
1 do you guys like better? It seems like almost 6 of 1, half dozen of
the other if you know what i mean. Both apps seem to be accessible.
Also, when you are in a place, how do you usually explain to the
driver how to find you since you can't see them coming, like if i'm at
the gym or something and need them to pick me u, how would i know it's
their car outside. Also if anyone has used both, does 1 usually have
a better price than the other?

Cheers,

RE: Goodbye, home button? Get ready for iPhone's biggest change - CNET

2017-09-06 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Larry,

Many of Androids most popular devices, for many, many years, have not used a
physical Home button. Instead, they use soft, or on-screen) navigation buttons
located on the bottom row of the display. Unlike the S8 series, however, these
navigation buttons were always available. This is to say, they did not scroll
off the display.

Until the S 8 series, Samsung was the only major brand that used a physical
Home button on all of its Android devices.

None of my Android phones, with the exception of the S 6, have physical Home
buttons; so I am no stranger to the technology. However, I strongly believe
that because of its physical Home button, I tended to gravitate towards my S 6
more than the others.

Anyway, in the case of the new s 8 series, there is a soft home button located
in the center bottom row of the display.
With the S 8, unfortunately, the Home button can scroll off the screen. This
is kind of a pain, to say the least--especially when one wishes to quickly
return to his/her starting point.

Apple tends to implement new technology with more flare and feasibility than
its competition. Let's hope it continues that standard.

8 tips and tricks for iOS 11's Notes app - CNET
Apple is slowly building its Notes app into a true Evernote replacement.
With the release of iOS 11, the Notes app has gained some useful features
that are sure to tempt you away from your current note app. Let's take a
look.
Tables
Screenshots by Jason Cipriani/CNET
You can now add tables to a note with a tap of a button. The table icon
sits

just above the keyboard; select it to add a 2x2 table. Add more rows or
columns with a tap on the border of the table to display a button next to
a

row or column, which then provides the option to add or delete the
respective item.
With the table created, add or edit text as you normally would.
Text editing
Screenshot by Jason Cipriani/CNET
Speaking of text, new text edit tools have been added to the Notes app in
iOS 11. Tap on the "Aa" button to reveal the new text tools, which include
monospaced text, and the typical text editing tools for lists, bold,
italics

and so on.
Scan documents
A brand-new document scanning tool is built directly into the iOS 11 Notes
app, and, frankly, is pretty sweet. We've already covered the feature in
detail, but here's the short and sweet version of using it: Open Notes,
open
or create a note > tap the plus sign > Scan Documents then line up the
doc.
After scanning a document, you can then use the Apple Pencil on an iPad
Pro

to mark up or sign the document.
Drag and drop
Jason Cipriani/CNET
iPad users will be able to highlight text or select a photo and drag it
into

the Notes app, instead of the longstanding copy and paste method.
Drag and drop is also available between notes within the Notes app itself.
Paper type
Screenshots by Jason Cipriani/CNET
Instead of the stale paper background, the iOS Notes app has had for some
time now, iOS 11 adds six new designs. Access the new designs when in a
note
with a tap on the Share button. The bottom row of the share sheet will
have

an icon titled Lines & Grids.
Pick one of the options and rejoice at the new look.
Control Center
Screenshot by Jason Cipriani/CNET
iOS 11's redesigned Control Center adds shortcuts to numerous apps and
services, one of which is the Notes app. After adding the Notes shortcut
to

Control Center, you will have access to Notes for jotting down a quick
thought or note with a swipe up from the lock screen. Open Settings >
Control Center to add the Notes shortcut.
To set whether a new note is created, or if the last note you accessed is
used when Notes is accessed from the lock screen, open the iOS Settings
app

Notes > Access Notes from Lock Screen and set your preference.

Gestures
Screenshots by Jason Cipriani/CNET
Your list of notes gains new options when you swipe to the left or right
on
an individual entry. For example, a swipe to the right will let you pin
the
note to the top of the list. A swipe to the left will give you the option
to

lock, move or delete a note.
Quick draw
Have an Apple Pencil and iPad Pro? You no longer have to go through the
process of enabling draw mode by tapping around the screen. Instead, just
put the pencil to a blank area in the note, and start writing or drawing.

in iOS 11, where it now offers a single page of user-configurable widgets and
switches. But if that same updated Control Center page had a mini dock at the
bottom for those same apps -- and/or a virtual home button
-- it would basically be a one-stop shortcut. The problem with exiling the home
button to the dock, though, is that it turns a single action -- pressing the
handy home button that we have now -- into a two-step process:
swiping first and then clicking the screen.
3D Touch could be better utilized for home screen shortcuts It still feels like
the variable pressure-sensitive 3D Touch technology that iPhones 6S and later
use is way underutilized, to the point where it feels unnecessary. But what if
pressing down on the home screen opened up sublayers, or app folders beneath?
Maybe pressing down on the bottom of the screen could launch back to the home
area, or Control Center. 3D Touch is there, and it's theoretically versatile...
now Apple just needs to put it to better use.

One-screen access to everything: is this is the post-home-button home screen?
Sarah Tew/CNET
iOS 11 on the iPad could be a preview of a no-home button iPhone The iPad has
already started exploring new ways of navigation in iOS 11.
(The beta has been out since June, and the final version will likely be
available in mid-September.) The app dock adds a lot of favorite apps for quick
shortcuts, making better use of the iPad's additional screen real estate. It's
not a massive change, but it's better than what it was in iOS 10, and better
than the Touch Bar on recent MacBook Pros. T

Like Netflix? T-Mobile is giving it away for free - CNET

Like Netflix? T-Mobile is giving it away for free - CNET
T-Mobile and Netflix are new BFFs.
The primary beneficiaries of this new friendship will be subscribers to
T-Mobile's "One" unlimited data plans, many of whom will get access to
Netflix for free, T-Mobile CEO John Legere announced Wednesday via spray
paint on an "Un-carrier Next" webcast video.
But the freebie only works if you have at least two T-Mobile One unlimited
data voice lines (single line customers are out of luck). The free Netflix
access arrives on Sept. 12. Customers on legacy or promotional plans, like
two lines for $100, or the senior citizen discount, need to upgrade to a
T-Mobile One family plan to be eligible.

T-Mobile CEO John Legere is at it again.
Josh MIller/CNET
The alliance is just the latest proof that the worlds of video and mobile
are colliding. AT&T is in the process of buying Time Warner -- home of "Game
of Thrones" and Batman -- so it can own more of the content you watch, and
has bundled HBO for free to some of its higher-end wireless customers.
Verizon has invested in creating short-form video geared towards younger
audiences and a mobile video service called Go90.

T-Mobile customers will soon get access to shows like "The Defenders" for
free.
Sarah Shatz/Netflix
T-Mobile, the third-largest wireless player -- well behind Verizon and AT&T
-- is opting instead to partner with a well-known entertainment player
rather than create its own shows and movies. Netflix is one of the world's
largest streaming video sites, with 104 million subscribers around the world
and nearly 52 million in the US alone, as of July.
It's about to get a few more.
Under the new program, T-Mobile acts as a reseller of Netflix, so a charge
and credit for the service will show up in your phone bill. T-Mobile One
customers will get the standard $9.99 plan, which allows for high-definition
video and two simultaneous streams. Customers opting for the $11.99 premium
plan can pay the difference in their T-Mobile bill.
"What we've struck with Netflix is an exclusive long-term partnership and
relationship," Legere said on a press conference call. "It's a great deal
for our customers."
"This is the right move at the right time -- for all the right reasons,"
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said in a blog post.
T-Mobile Chief Operating Officer Mike Sievert confirmed that T-Mobile is the
only US carrier that will be able to strike this deal, so don't expect the
other carriers to match this offer.
T-Mobile will be offering new accounts as part of the program, but you'll be
able to link your existing Netflix account as well.
T-Mobile stressed that it was paying Netflix for the service, although
Sievert hinted that it got a slight discount. He said the company would make
up for the cost through subscriber and revenue growth.
The carriers have been upping their game in terms of perks to get you to
switch to their service. There's T-Mobile Tuesday, a program to offer weekly
freebies. AT&T offers its DirecTV Now online streaming service for $10 a

US House votes overwhelmingly in favor of self-driving-car bill - Roadshow

2017-09-06 Thread M. Taylor
CNET News - Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 10:14 AM
US House votes overwhelmingly in favor of self-driving-car bill - Roadshow
A bipartisan effort has brought proper national regulation of self-driving
cars one step closer to reality.
Nearly every member of the US House of Representatives voted in favor of
H.R. 3388, otherwise known as the Safely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment
and Research In Vehicle Evolution (SELF DRIVE) Act. The act passed
subcommittee in July, and it left committee with a unanimous vote in its
favor in that same month.
A basic summary of the bill is that it clarifies how responsibilities
regarding the introduction of self-driving cars will be split between
federal and state governments. As The Hill puts it, the act puts authority
over the car in the hands of the feds, with authority over the driver
remaining within the purview of state government.
I wouldn't expect autonomous pizza deliveries to start in the next six
months, but the SELF DRIVE Act brings us one step closer to saving money on
tips.
Ford
That means the feds will handle things like safety standards and design,
putting a national framework behind it. The states will cover matters like
insurance, sales, licensing and inspections.
Under the SELF DRIVE Act, automakers would be able to deploy up to 100,000
self-driving vehicles even though they may not conform to each and every
federal safety standard. That said, this won't be the Wild West --
manufacturers must still provide the government with a plan of attack, and
they must secure permits for deployment, as well.
There's also some text tucked in there that relate more to cars and less to
self-driving cars specifically. The bill would mandate rear-seat alert
systems in new cars no later than two years after the bill became law. The
bill would also give the Secretary of Transportation the ability to revisit
federal headlight standards and adjust them as necessary to improve safety.
With the House's vote done, it's time for the Senate to act. They have
debated a similar bill, but the two bills will need to be merged into one
(reconciliation) and voted upon once again before the president has the
chance to sign anything into law.

Goodbye, home button? Get ready for iPhone's biggest change - CNET

2017-09-06 Thread M. Taylor

CNET News - Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 1:14 PM
Goodbye, home button? Get ready for iPhone's biggest change - CNET

What will life be like without one of these? Maybe we already know the
answer.
Sarah Tew/CNET
When Apple unveils its new high-end iPhone on Sept. 12, it's widely expected
to do away with the most iconic part of its handset: the home button. If the
rumors are true, the all-screen design of the so-called iPhone 8 means no
room for a bottom bezel, and thus no room for a physical home button (and
its Touch ID fingerprint sensor). It will be the biggest design change to
hit the iPhone in its 10-plus year history -- a radical change to the most
basic usage element that has existed on the phone since day one.

A glyph that appears in the HomePod firmware could be the rumored iPhone 8.
MacRumors
Or maybe it won't be that shocking a change at all.
In fact, Apple has been nudging millions of iPhone owners with changes to
homescreen navigation for the past several years. There are already pieces
in place to suggest the transition may not be as wild and weird as you might
expect. Android phones have already done it, and the iPhone can do it too.
The current iPhone's no-click home button could be training wheels for how
the iPhone 8 will work
Here's the funny thing: The iPhone's home button is already gone. Instead of
a physical button, 2016's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus featured a solid-state panel
that used subtle vibration to simulate a button press. It initially drew
mixed opinions: some felt the click was weird; others liked the haptic
thump. But the point is, I got used to it, and most people I know did, too.
It feels a bit like a real button, but it's not. And maybe that's how the
iPhone 8 display will work, too.
Enhanced vibration (called "Taptic Engine") give the iPhone and Apple Watch
their taps and thumps, and it already does a few things on the iPhone 6S and
later models to feel tactile in iOS 10 (scroll wheels in settings, or
pressing in on app icons). Pressing in on a part of the screen will probably
feel the same as pressing in on the solid-state home button does now. The
bigger problem, of course, becomes how to relocate that Touch ID fingerprint
sensor -- or come up with a replacement.

I just want to get to what
I need faster.
On an iPad Pro with iOS 11, swiping up brings a dashboard with open apps,
plus Control Center. It's a single place to swap between apps or adjust
settings. Basically, it's a type of Home Screen, buried ben

Re: some uber and lift questions

Why are you getting the discounts?

Cheers,
Jed.

RE: inside temperatures

2017-09-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Or something like the Netatmo Weather Station or various other sensors which
are available from other companies and of course not all of them work with SIRI.
I wish Netatmo would although it is not so difficult to do a 3-finge swipe
right from the home screen to the Today screen where I have Netatmo set up as a
widget.

RE: Ear pods and Siri

2017-09-06 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And finally when iOS 11 comes out you can set up the Airpods so one side gets
SIRI to listen and when you tap the other side it works as Play/Pause.
Now they just have to add volume up/down functionality and skip forward/back
and I might even buy a set.
But let's first see if there will be a new Airpod with a W2 chip next week.

puzzled that, with my iPhone in my pocket, double tapping on my earpod did not
work when out and about to evoke Siri. It just occurred to me today to check
Siri settings and when I turned on Allow Siri when locked, my double tap was
recognised at once! These little things do help... Harry

my second question is on Twitterific. How do you compose a tweet to
someone you are following? I tried on both the native Twitter app and
couldn't find the tweet button. I don't see a way on Twitterific. I

Re: some uber and lift questions

2017-09-06 Thread Wayne Merritt
Awesome!

Re: some uber and lift questions

2017-09-06 Thread Mike Arrigo

Original message:

Cheers,
Jed.

Re: some uber and lift questions

2017-09-06 Thread Feliciano Godoy
I prefer Lyft. However, I also use uber. From my experience, lyft tends to be a
tad bit cheaper in most cases in my county. I always check both because one is
usually cheaper than the other. In terms of the user interface, Lyft is more
intuitive. You signed up for both rideshare services as your experience may
differ compared to mine

RE: some umber and lift questions

2017-09-06 Thread Mike Ulrich
I'll tell you one thing about keeping one's county budget good for Public/Para
Transit; you've got to get others motivated to attend your county's budget
meetings; and with the whole disabled community: SCREAM to improve, or at the
very least, maintain the current budget.

Right about now my county, Lee County Florida, they're getting ready for the
2017-2018 budget public hearings. But as I keep in touch with our county
commissioners and both the director of LeeTran and the director of Passport;,
Para Transit, they've told me that their respective budgets will not be cut
down. That's acceptable enough for me.

The whole point being, if you, or a group of people, feel the need to get more
in transportation, then it's up to you to show up at your county's County
Commissioner meetings and sign up to speak under Citizen's Input time; and
voice your request from the heart. Plus, you'll probably have to attend these
meetings time after time, being quite the pain in the arse.
Sure, you might be motivated enough to do this yourself, but when it comes to
getting other blind folks to show up and back you, it embarrassingly is clear,
they say they will, but they indeed don't! All talk and no walk! You've got to
have the numbers, because you don't have the cash; don't carry any water with
your local politicians.

So yes, this does require public speaking. But if you're not heard, then public
transportation and Para Transit are easy targets to cut in the budget.

Sorry to say it, but the blind/disabled voter block is a voter block without
deep pockets.

We use both and they are really close as far as expensive. The only thing
we do not like about Lyft is that you can not contact the driver to let them
know where you will be or that you are blind. A lot of the drivers here
drive for both. So, usually, it is like a flip of a coin to decide which
one we might use.

Subject: some uber and lift questions

Hey guys,

OK, i wanted some input here on a few things with uber and lift? What
1 do you guys like better? It seems like almost 6 of 1, half dozen of the
other if you know what i mean. Both apps seem to be accessible.
Also, when you are in a place, how do you usually explain to the driver how to
find you since you can't see them coming, like if i'm at the gym or something
and need them to pick me u, how would i know it's their car outside. Also if
anyone has used both, does 1 usually have a better price than the other?

Cheers,
Jed.

RE: some uber and lift questions

2017-09-06 Thread Richard Petty
I believe prices may vary from city to city, so One service or the other may
generally cost more than the other. In our area, Lyft is slightly less costly.
Slightly. In my limited experience, Uber seems more likely to increase rates
during peak, high-traffic times--that's during what Uber terms the "surge."
Service quality here is similar for both services. Often the same individuals
drive for both services, keeping both apps on their smart phones.

For the Uber app, it's fairly easy to send a text message to the driver. I text
the driver, indicate where I am (such as "standing next to green hospital
sign") and ask the driver to speak to me when he arrives. I do state that I'm
blind. When the driver arrives, I ask his or her name. If it's the same name
shown on the app, then I'm reasonably sure I'm being picked up by the service.
I don't speak the driver's name until he or she speaks it.

Hope this helps.

RE: some uber and lift questions

2017-09-06 Thread Jeremy Gilley
Good morning,
This is what I've found.

1. Lift can be a tad more expensive from what I have seen, and I use both.
2. Lift drivers actually go through a more thero background check then uber
drivers do. I've been told this by several lift and uber drivers.
3. At times lift will be surging when uber doesn't, so, this is something to
look out for.
4. I have yet to step into a old and or trashy lift car where I have with
uber. Not to say this can happen, but using both apps several times over the
past year, this is still my opinion.
Lift drivers just seem to appear to be more professional over all then uber
drivers, though I have ridden with very professional uber drivers.
In the end, its everyone's own experiences that helps them decide what app
to use in the end.
Hope this helps.

Ear pods and Siri

2017-09-06 Thread Harry Bell
In just sharing a discovery, though others may already know this. I'd been
puzzled that, with my iPhone in my pocket, double tapping on my earpod did not
work when out and about to evoke Siri. It just occurred to me today to check
Siri settings and when I turned on Allow Siri when locked, my double tap was
recognised at once! These little things do help... Harry
