Ray,
I’m using the Logitech K480 and the f1 key still works as you describe.
I do not here apostrophe, but I never paid attention to that so I do not know
if that is a change or what.
That could be determined by the punctuation setting for VoiceOver.

I’m not clear on your messages question. If you are talking text messages,
there is a bug in iOS 11 that leaves a “null” item when you delete a message.

IF you are talking Email messages, no, you do not have to delete them twice.

RE: screen curtain RE: Questions regarding Amazon Video, for a friend

2017-10-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It saves absolutely zip to turn on the screen curtain. The battery drain from
the screen comes from the amount of backlighting (mostly) and screen curtain
does not change the backlighting, it just artifically blackens the screen.
There are assumptions that on a phone with an OLED screen like the soon to be
released iPhone X screen curtain might save battery, but I don't believe it
until I hear official confirmation from Apple that this is so. In the meantime
if you don't have sighted people using the phone set your brightness to 0% and
turn off auto brightness, if anything this will save you a bit of battery.
Did you use your signature during Irma as well? *smile*

Forgot about the screen curtain. Does using the screen curtain save much on

If he has turned on the screen curtain and it interferes with this app
(unlikely as it may be) he should maybe turn it off with a 3-finger triple tap.

Hello everyone,

I’ve not tried this program yet. Been meaning to do so. Just hadn’t gotten
around to it.
However, I have a totally blind friend, who has been using it for some time,
now. He has a 6S, with I believe the latest update. As well as latest app
update.

He told me today that he used to be able to see everything in his library. But
that now this isn’t the case.
He said that where he thinks he should see his library, I think he said this
was toward the right side of his screen, it states screen curtain on, and won’t
show the library.
He says that if he does a search for something he’s purchased, it then will
show it.

Does anyone else use this App?
Is anyone else having any sort of problems, especially when it comes to seeing
their Amazon video, library?
Can anyone offer me some thoughts, or suggestions?

Thank you,

Terri

Re: WiFi thermostats

2017-10-22 Thread Richard Turner

Yes, you can raise or lower it by one degree at a time with the up or down
buttons. Or you can double tap on the Voice Recorder mic button and say set
heat at 70 degrees, etc.
Then, there will be a button to either set it as a permanent hold, or to hold
until a certain time.
You can also set up a schedule, though that is rather tedious.

I have several years of experience with the Nest thermostats: we own two, and
we have two Nest smoke detectors as well (primarily because they will call your
phone if an emergency occurs at home).

The Nest app is moderately accessible … I have not been able to set schedules
using it. Also, if the thermostat has a problem connecting to your wifi, or
via the internet to the Nest main servers, it will display error messages only
on the thermostat (which you usually have to have sighted help to deal with).

You could get around the inability to set schedules by use of the “learning”
feature (having your installer clear all learning after installation and
testing is very helpful). Each time you make an adjustment to the temp, the
idea is that if it sees you do this repeatedly it will make a schedule for you.

My wife found it confusing when it would suddenly make a temperature setting
change without explanation, so we eventually turned off learning (I guess it’s
a personal preference).

It’s very nice that the Nest will manage humidity in a home which has a
two-speed or a variable speed system. It does this by running the system at
slower speeds when the humidity rises too high. Even with a standard single
speed system the Nest will manage humidity by “over-cooling” up to 4 degrees if
you enable this feature. However, it takes sighted assistance to adjust the
humidity level setting (it’s not something you usually ever adjust again
however).

It’s a very good idea to get an installer who is certified as a “Nest Pro”, so
ask them. Turns out my installer was not, and I am still arguing with them,
and trying to teach them about Nest features. Their one employee who
understood Nest thermostats has left them.

If you have both Nest thermostats and smoke detectors, if you have any smoke
the detectors will cause your heating or air conditioning to shut off to stop
the spread of smoke … a nice feature. Their smoke detectors report the problem
with a recorded voice announcement, along with its location, such as “low
battery in the dining room” or “smoke in the up stairs”, so this is also nice.
They self test themselves monthly, and report the results to you via the app.

While the ability to control Nest thermostats is built into the Echo, I use a
third party Skill called “The Thermostat” because it allows me to ask it what
is the humidity in the up stairs, and other such additional questions and
commands, so you may want to look into this skill as it works with many models.

Chip

Apple's iPhone X bottleneck woes may be over.

2017-10-22 Thread Maria Reyes
This looks like good news!!! Hope this is true.

A new supply chain report suggests that the chokepoints on iPhone X
manufacturing are loosening, and shipments from assemblers may meet demand
before the holiday season concludes.

Contradicting earlier supply chain reports, DigiTimes claims that chip vendors
"were not aware" of any production delays or shipment cutbacks. The same
reports claim that chip deliveries for the iPhone X have been on schedule, with
the supply chain needs for components sated before the holiday season.

Tuesday's report claims that shipments of the iPhone X will "grow
substantially" after October -- which it would have to, to have any
availability in November, if previous reports are accurate.

However, the report also claims that the iPhone X won't reach equilibrium of
supply and demand until the first quarter of 2018. Should the new predicted
schedule hold, that would mean that there is sufficient supply of the device at
about the same time as the iPhone 7 Plus did.

Many of the earlier reports of constrained component supply, including one from
Monday, came from DigiTimes itself, so it is not clear where the new, or
refined, information is coming from. DigiTimes has an unreliable track record
in predicting Apple's future product plans, but does occasionally provide
accurate information from Apple's supply chain.

Apple's iPhone X debuted on Sept. 12 and has a 5.8-inch Super Retina OLED
display, the A11 Bionic processor, a 3D-sensing TrueDepth camera at the core of
the Face ID technology. The device ships Nov. 3, and starts at $999 without any
promotions.

Re: Google mail question.

2017-10-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
If you delete a message in Gmail, it should be removed from the server
in about 30 days. I'm not sure if the 30 days starts from the time the
message was received or the time the message was deleted. So for
example, if you just deleted a message from last January, it may still
stick around for 30 days before it's deleted from the Gmail servers.

Like I said, I don't worry about it and just let Gmail clean up after
itself. I did go in and check though, and the oldest email in my inbox
is from May of 2011, but the oldest email in my trash folder is from
August 2017.

Gmail doesn't actually have folders on the servers. It attaches a label or set
of labels to each message. When you're looking at a folder in Gmail, you're
just looking at the messages on the server that have that label. So for
example, when you delete a message, the trash lavel gets added to the message,
so when you bring up the trash folder, you're seeing all of the messages that
have the trash label attached to it. Any message that has the trash label will
be deleted from the server in 30 days. This is nice if you accidentally deleted
a message and want to get it back.

The all folder just shows you every message on the server, so it'll include
messages with any label on them, such as the trash label. This is handy if
you're looking for a message and you don't know where you filed it.

I can't answer your other questions since I'm OK with just letting Google clean
up my messages after 30 days or so.

Lynn,
When you first open the app, it defaults to the food section which counts your
points for the day. If you go to the very bottom of that page there is a link
to browse restaurants. When you double tap on that, swipe right a couple of
times to the search bar. Type the name of the restaurant you wish to find in
the search bar. Then swipe right down until you get to that name and double tap
on it. I hope this helps.

Ray,
If you go into the VoiceOver, Typing Feedback setting and turn on either
characters or both characters and words, then you will hear “left open quote”
when hitting the apostrophe, but that means you will hear every key you type.
I normally have my hardware keyboard set to only words.
I don’t know if you can change the way VoiceOver says the name of the
Apostrophe key. I think I will experiment with that.

That could be determined by the punctuation setting for VoiceOver.

I’m not clear on your messages question. If you are talking text messages,
there is a bug in iOS 11 that leaves a “null” item when you delete a message.

IF you are talking Email messages, no, you do not have to delete them twice.

rick,
The honeywell app works very well. The only thing I really wish was exposed to
VoiceOver is the current inside/outside temperature reading. You can use the
voice button and ask, but that is a bit hit and miss.
I like the fact that you can make adjustments from anywhere.

The skill you mentioned sounds very interesting. Is there any skill available

Hth,

Chip

Hello listers. I know this topic has been discussed several times on this list.
At the time I had a functioning WiFi thermostat from Radio Thermostats known as
the Filtreet CT50.

Unfortunately, it’s bitten the dust and no longer connects to my network, even
not after long hours of trouble shooting including the wiring. It’s time for me
to move on so I’d like to purchase a thermostat that works with Alexa. The one
I’ve seen on Amazon is the Ecobee3 lite second gen for $168 via Prime shipping.
Of course the real issue is whether or not it’s IOS app is workable with
VoiceOver. If anyone has had any experience with this brand, I’d be interested
in knowing your experience in terms of accessibility.

There are 2 other thermostats that work with Alexa. The Nest learning and the
Honeywell RTH9585WF1004 so if anyone has any experience with either of these,
I’d also be grateful for any feedback with regard to their respective
accessibility.

RTH9585WF1004 since it’s app looks to be at least somewhat workable. The
Ecobee4 looked interesting but I found the demo mode in the app to mostly be
inaccessible with no way to interact with the controls with VO.

The skill you mentioned sounds very interesting. Is there any skill available
that will allow you to create schedules? Also, how much can you really do via
the Echo or Siri? I get the feeling it’s quite limited.

Subject: RE: WiFi thermostats

Hth,

RE: how to use WhatsApp for a particular purpose

2017-10-22 Thread Chip Orange
I use the group feature of WhatsApp quite a bit ... in concept it's very much
like this mailing list, except each of us in the group leaves voice messages
instead of email messages to the group.

This might be a good way to offer lessons of any kind, as each less would go
out to the entire group, who could also hear any questions.

When recording long voice messages you may want to know that there is an
alternative to holding your finger down on the voice message button (which is
the usual way to record a message). The alternative is to start the message by
holding your finger down, then use your other hand to turn off voice over and
then turn it back on. As soon as you turn voice over off you can release your
finger from the voice message button and it will continue recording. You can
verify this by looking for a timer which is at the bottom of the screen near
the voice message button.

To stop the recording you give the voice message button a double tap.

Good luck,

Chip

Subject: how to use WhatsApp for a particular purpose

hello,
Somewhat impetuously, I have offered to teach English to various people around
the world using WhatsApp. I have used this app for a while now, but, Millie to
receive messages and reply to them. I have a list of, say, eight people, with
their phone numbers, who wish to avail of my services. Wilde we would be a
group, as such, I am thinking that the calls would be on an individual basis.
am I right in assuming one can use WhatsApp in the same way that one can use
Skype? so, we can chat away as with a normal phone call? would there be any
point in me setting up a group? it might be easier to keep tabs of the various
calls and people, but not sure about that… in fact, I almost wish I hadn’t
volunteered, I don’t really know how to go about this. can anyone give me some
tips as to how to organise this via the app?

thanks in advance, fingers crossed, Sandy

Re: Braille Displays . . . Again!!!!

2017-10-22 Thread Wayne Scott
I use a Focus 14 with my iPhone. And it works fine. I have never heard of a 24
or 32 crl display. The Focus 14 costs around $1300. Plus, it's very portable.
Unless you have a Braillenote 18, that's the oqy one I can think of. I think
APH has a braille display that might work. Check there. Being partially deaf, I
hfound braille to be a lifesaver. I use it in combination with speech at times.

As far as I know, none of the Siri voices are available to developers, so no.

If you want that, I'd suggest writing to supp...@voicedream.com and requesting
it.
Also, putting in a request to Apple accessibility to make the Siri voices
available to developers.

I use it at work. I usually use JAWS and Chrome, and I find it

take action on the buttons where I need to do something. Like I said,
it's all doable, but I have to take my time, and I do find it a bit
tedious. It is better then printing it though and getting sighted help

A sales person was making a presentation and wanted a signature
using a program which he called "docu sign."  Frankly, I didn't
understand his explanation and hope that some list member can
tell me how it works and whether it is accessible when using an
iPhone 6.

Thanks.

Re: Google mail question.

2017-10-22 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Gmail doesn't actually have folders on the servers. It attaches a label
or set of labels to each message. When you're looking at a folder in
Gmail, you're just looking at the messages on the server that have that
label. So for example, when you delete a message, the trash lavel gets
added to the message, so when you bring up the trash folder, you're
seeing all of the messages that have the trash label attached to it. Any
message that has the trash label will be deleted from the server in 30
days. This is nice if you accidentally deleted a message and want to get
it back.

The all folder just shows you every message on the server, so it'll
include messages with any label on them, such as the trash label. This
is handy if you're looking for a message and you don't know where you
filed it.

I can't answer your other questions since I'm OK with just letting
Google clean up my messages after 30 days or so.

Braille Displays . . . Again!!!!

2017-10-22 Thread Christine Grassman
Hello all:
At the risk of being another pain in the behind looking for the optimal Braille
display for my needs, here are my needs:

1. It must be very portable;

2. It will be used for mostly a great deal of reading, and is needed for work
and personal use;

3. It must work reliably with the iPhone;

4. As a rapid Braille reader, one of the tinier displays simply will not do,
*yet*, a I cannot imagine that any 40-cell display is truly portable. I have
never seen a 24- or 32-cell display, and suspect they might be right for me,
but aside from the Brailliant, I have been unable to find reviews on any 24- or
32-cell displays.

5. The Actilino looked good, until I read that it only had 16 cells, *ant* that
updating it would require a Windows machine. On a related note, I cannot find
any reviews of Basic Braille, though the description looked good.

6. I seriously considered ESYS 24, but it is a little pricier than I want; my
limit is $2500, and I prefer between $1500 and $2000.
Also, I heard the ESYS devices require a Windows machine for updating.
7. Can anyone who is an extremely fast Braille reader who uses one of the
smaller Braille displays please let me know their experiences, good or bad?

8. Does ATC on the Actilino really work, perhaps canceling out the fact that it
is quite small? Anything sluggish simply is not going to cut it.

9. I have fairly small hands, so ergonomics requires easy access to panning and
the space bar; I also have had rather nasty tendinitis in my dominant hand from
using my cane and from too much typing on the iPhone, so I have to take this
into account.

10. I have seen the Focus line of displays and do not particularly like them.

11. The Vario Ultra 20 looks pretty good, but I am not sure if it might be too
small; it would depend on how easy it is to move from line to line, and I have
seen some reviews which say it is more complicated than some of the others,
though I realize this is quite subjective.
12 I have seen the lists of supported displays, and cannot find reviews for
most of them.
Help! Please! Thanks so much. I need more inconspicuous access to my reading; I
feel rude having an earphone in my ear when others around me are presenting or
talking.

Regarding deleted texts

2017-10-22 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I think I already know the answer to my own question. I just want to
check, to make sure.

The other day I was trying to delete some text messages. I accidentally
deleted a number, that had texts in it. It wasn't a number I had saved yet.

I can't remember if these were I-messages, or not. But I don't think so.

Anyway, is it possible to get these texts back, or are they gone for good?

Honestly, I don't care so much about the texts, I just really need that
phone number. I don't remember it. I can not believe I did this!

Anyway, is there anything I can possibly do?

Thank you,

Terri
