can I clear the autocomplete suggestion list in messages?

2017-12-10 Thread R Van Lant
If I start to type an name when composing a new text message, it will suggest
names. Some of what it suggests are based on past messages I have sent. Is
there a way to clear this history so that it's not suggesting groups I no
longer wish to send messages to? I use Outlook 2010 on my laptop and there is
a button in Options that allows me to do this for email, so I'm hoping Apple
offers something similar on the phone.

RE: questions on cloud storage

2017-12-10 Thread R Van Lant
Kelly,
I have been thinking of unloading all the photos as you noted. I guess I have
put it off, thinking it is nice to have photos to show off of my kids, but I
guess I should admit that I just don't do that like my sighted friends do. I
think I have also liked knowing my photos are being backed up in somewhere
other than a piece of hardware, such as my laptop and external hard drive.

Maybe I'll go ahead and set my husband up with drop box and see how it works
for him. Can I log into two different Drop box accounts on my laptop -- to my
own and to his? Or do I have to figure out how to have him set up a folder to
share with me.

Believe me, I was really frustrated when he elected to go against Apple. It
still causes resentment because he'll ask me to troubleshoot issues with his
phone and it could have all been so much easier if I could just pick up his
phone, turn on VoiceOver and do what needs to be done.

Regarding your husband, he has to decide what tech ecosystem he wishes
to join. He obviously rejected Apple when he bought an Android phone

tried the joint drop box account idea with the free account with both

Apple apps: These were the most Popular Apple Apps of 2017

2017-12-10 Thread M. Taylor
These were the most downloaded Apple apps of 2017
By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY Updated 8:12 a.m. PST Dec. 8, 2017

LOS ANGELES - Snap, Inc., the parent company of the Snapchat app, had a
rough first year on Wall Street. Consumers couldn't have cared less.
The Bitmoji app, owned by Snap, came in at No. 1 on Apple's annual list of
the most downloaded free iTunes apps of the year, followed by Snapchat in
second place. Last year, Snapchat was the top app of the year, and Bitmoji,
which can be used to create avatars that slip into Snaps and e-mails, wasn't
in the top 10.
As with years past, consumers mostly gravitated towards familiar favorites.
The rest of the top 10 include:
3. YouTube (up from No. 6 in 2016). Video viewing.
4.Facebook Messenger (No. 2 last year). Chat.
5. Instagram (5th place, like in 2016). Photo sharing.
6. Facebook (No. 6 again). Social network.
7. Google Maps (No. 7 again). Navigation.
8. Netflix, (up from No. 9). Video viewing.
9. Spotify (up from No. 10). Music streaming.
10. Uber, which wasn't in the 10 last year.

The only new entry to the top 15 was Wish, a shopping app offering low-price
goods from China, at No. 15.

Last year's new entry to the top 10, Pokemon Go, was a short-lived smash.
This year, it didn't make the top charts, in either the free apps - or the
free games - which were led by Super Mario Run.

Music streaming service Pandora left the top 10 to clock in at No. 12.

Apple apps, like Apple Music and Pages, come pre-loaded on devices, and thus
don't get ranked in Apple's year-end charts.

In making its selections, Apple editors also identified several trends of
2017 worth noting.

Augmented reality apps came to recent iPhones in the fall, with the
introduction of IOS 11. Apple touted the IKEA Place app, from the retailer,
which lets you visualize IKEA furniture in your home, via an animated image
and the video editing app Filmr.

The year saw more mental health, mindfulness and stress reduction apps than
ever before, Apple said. Editors named Calm the app of the year.
On the charts, for the second year in a row, NPR's Fresh Air was the most
downloaded podcast, followed by the Joe Rogan Experience, Stuff You Should
Know, The Dave Ramsey Show and The New York Times' The Daily in the top 5.
This American Life, The TED Radio Hour, Planet Money, Pod Saves America and
TED Talks Daily rounded out the top 10.

Throughout the year, Apple regularly refreshes its chart of the top apps on
the iTunes Store and then ranks them on a year-end chart. It doesn't include
sales statistics.
While most downloads are for free apps, developers make money with either
advertising, selling subscriptions (Netflix and Spotify) or selling add-ons,
which is popular with gaming. According to market research firm AppAnnie,
some $100 million will be spent on apps at both the iTunes and Google Play
stores in 2017.

The choices for the top paid iPhone apps were less familiar. These were
headed by Facetune, the $3.99 app that brings Photoshop-like retouching to
the iPhone, followed by Tabs and Chords, which offers guitarists cheat
sheets on how to play popular songs. Also on the list; HotSchedules, for
listing work shifts; the Enlight photo app; and the 7-minute Workout
Challenge, the premium version of the free app.

The top free iPad apps are topped by YouTube, followed by Netflix, Facebook,
Messenger, Google Chrome, Amazon Prime Video, Gmail, YouTube Kids, Amazon
and Spotify.

Google unveiled its end-of-the-year charts earlier in the week but didn't
offer rankings beyond saying that Super Mario Run was the most downloaded
game of the year for Android devices. It also selected five choices for the
"most popular" new apps of 2017. They include:

Photo Editor, for jazzing up images.
What the Forecast, a weather that promises to forecast "how nasty it is
outside."
Boomerang: A subscription service for watching old Bugs Bunny and Co.
cartoons.
Top Buzz Videos: A viral video app.
Yarn. Chat fiction in the form of text messages.

RE: Help please with asking Siri to reply to a text message

2017-12-10 Thread Richard Turner
Siri has been behaving oddly this week.
Did you have Siri read you the message in the first place?
Or, did you open it and read it with VoiceOver and then ask Siri to reply to
this text message?

I find if Siri has read you the message, when it asks if you want to reply and
you say yes, things work a little better.

Otherwise, the usual try a reboot and so on and see if things work better.

Anything short of throwing the phone, grin.

Richard

Subject: Help please with asking Siri to reply to a text message

Hi,

I’ve had some problems with siri and trying to reply to text messages the past
week, and can’t figure out what’s going on. Any help will be much appreciated.

I receive a text message, usually an iMessage.

If I ask Siri to reply to the message with a
Thank you for this message”, I get Siri telling me, “Sorry we have a problem.
Please try again..” Trying again doesn’t help; I only keep getting this message.

If I open the Messages app, activate the text field, and dictate using Siri
“Thanks for this message”, Siri repeats the message and I then Send it.

So, it’s not a problem with internet access, either via Cellular or WiFi.

Is there a way to ask Siri to reply to a just received text message? I’m sure
I’ve done this in the past, but now cannot do it.

Thanks for any help. Keith

Help please with asking Siri to reply to a text message

2017-12-10 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

I've had some problems with siri and trying to reply to text messages the past
week, and can't figure out what's going on. Any help will be much appreciated.

I receive a text message, usually an iMessage.

If I ask Siri to reply to the message with a
Thank you for this message", I get Siri telling me, "Sorry we have a problem.
Please try again.." Trying again doesn't help; I only keep getting this message.

If I open the Messages app, activate the text field, and dictate using Siri
"Thanks for this message", Siri repeats the message and I then Send it.

So, it's not a problem with internet access, either via Cellular or WiFi.

Is there a way to ask Siri to reply to a just received text message? I'm sure
I've done this in the past, but now cannot do it.

Thanks for any help. Keith

questions on cloud storage

2017-12-10 Thread R Van Lant
Hi,
I am hoping one of you won't mind covering the basics on my questions about
cloud storage.

First, I currently have an upgraded iCloud storage account, as I ran out of
space on the free plan. I was looking at the settings today to see how much
space I'm using and see that I have primarily my photos being backed up. I
turned on backup for contacts, just in case. I'm curious about all the other
apps listed that I could be backing up to iCloud. Many of those apps don't
strike me as ones that would have data I'd be worried about losing. Is there a
reason I might want to be backing things up? The only other ones I think would
be good to maybe turn on is Voice Dream Reader. Kindle and Audible already
synch to the amazon cloud.

Second, I have the basic Dropbox account, as this seemed like the easiest way
to move files from my Windows PC to my phone, particularly into Voice Dream
Reader. I currently have it also backing up my photos, thinking it would be
easier to pull photos I wanted to my computer from this. (No, I have not
figured out putting an iCloud drive on my Windows PC; maybe this would be as
easy as Dropbox for photos and I could then save dropbox space by not having
camera roll on it.) If you use Drop box, do you also use iCloud? Any best
practices on when to use which one?

Third and probably most pressing, My husband is on an Android phone. He takes
photos and videos of our kids on his phone, that are too large to send via
email or text to me. He's very new to a smart phone and does not have cloud
storage going, to my knowledge. What direction should we go to allow me to
access his videos and such? I'm thinking dropbox would be straightforward, but
since I have the upgraded iCloud plan already, is that an option? Maybe I
should downgrade my iCloud storage and upgrade the Dropbox so we can share an
account. Anyone in a similar situation and could give best practices? I'm the
more technical of the two of us, but my husband is sighted and I don't know how
to set up his phone, so I need to be very specific up front on the
recommendation so I can be sure to have access to these videos.

All ideas and input welcome.

Robin

RE: Good light detector for small L E D lights

2017-12-10 Thread Mr. Ed
Hi Richard,

I downloaded and tried the Boop Light Detector. It seem to work real well. I
have a small L E D light on my headset when plugged and and Boop was able to
tell me it was on.

I will have to play with it some more but it seem to be quite good.

Thanks for sharing this information with me.

Have you tried Boop Light Detector?

It somewhat depends on how bright the lights are.

Maybe making sure the room light is off?

Boop light detector is free. So, no harm in trying.

Hi Richard,

My friend is wanting to see L E D lights down to about 1/8 inches in diameter.
This is the size that is on things like razors, chargers and other devices.

He has a small hand held light detector but it cost around $60. So I was
wondering if there were any light detector app that would work on those small L
E D lights.

Re: How is iOS 11 on an iPhone 5s?

2017-12-10 Thread Kathy Brandt
Thanks to all who answered my question. I updated my iPod touch six Friday
night, and my iPhone 5s yesterday. Things have gone pretty well. The few things
that have taken me by surprise, I have just rolled with, and so far I am
managing, so, it could be worse, and now I am glad to have access again to the
app which prompted all this, which I really would have missed, be my eyes,
which are use at least once a week. Thanks to all who gave me encouragement.

I went from 9.5 to 11.2. I’d say from beginning to and, the entire process took
about 40 minutes per device, and I’m just doing some fine-tuning.

I didn’t even know that mode exists. I didn’t change anything or is that just
the way it is by default. Thanks.

Re: Keyboard Recommendations

2017-12-10 Thread Julie Dawson
When you press the fn key with the f2 key to change it to the iPhone, where
is the fn key? Where do you purchase this keyboard and for approximately
what price?

Thank you.

Subject: RE: Keyboard Recommendations

I bought a Logitech K780 not that long ago, it does have a number pad, the
inverted arrow T is clearly separated, but it does not have the 6-pack
(Insert/Delete, Page Up/Down and Home/End).
Also, the function keys are all next to each other even though there would
have been space to put in the gaps between F4 and F5 and F8 and F9, but I
fixed this by putting a tactile dot on F4, F8 and F12.
To the right of F12 is a Cortana/search key when you use it as a Windows
keyboard and the very last one on the right is Delete, if you press it with
the FN key it's Printscreen.
I did have to download the logitech Options software to make it so the
function keys in Windows were function keys if pressed by themselves, by
default you had to press FN and the function keys for this, but it was
easily fixed.
I otherwise really like that keyboard and it has now become my primary
keyboard to use with my laptop as well as my iPhone, F1, f2 and F3 can be
programmed for 3 different devices.
If I use it with Windows and want to switch to my iPhone which is on F2, I
have to press FN+F2 because otherwise F2 is just the function key, but if
I'm using it with my iPhone and want to switch back to Windows then I can
just press F1 without the FN key because in iOS F1 has otherwise no meaning.
Of course the function keys pressed with FN are also used for things like
turning the brightness up or down, turning the laptops Touchpad on and off,
FN+F10 toggles Mute, FN+F11 is volume down and FN+F12 is volume up.
If I switch it to my iPhone pressing the spacebar wakes up the phone and I
can then just quickly enter my unlock PIN on the number pad and the phone
unlocks.
This keyboard also comes with a USB dongle so even if your computer didn't
have bluetooth, youcould just plug in the dongle and use it that way and the
dongle is conveniently stored in the battery compartment so it's always
handy and hard to loose.
Lastly, this keyboard is not a mechanical keyboard (I actually have never
seen a mechanical bluetooth keyboard) but it's very quiet and has a
beautiful feel to it. It has the usual slider switch on the right for
turning it on or off.
It is also very heavy because it has a groove all along the top above the
function keys and you can stick in your iPhone there and it holds it up at a
good viewing angle for sighted people and as the groove is open on each end
you can even put a large iPad into this groove and since the keyboard is
weighted it won't tip over.
With the exception of the function key gaps this is probably the nicest and
best designed keyboards I have had in a long time.

Regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Keyboard Recommendations

Hello,

Can anyone make recommendations for full Bluetooth keyboards for use
primarily with a PC laptop but also usable with iOS devices? I’m looking for
a quiet mechanical keyboard. I thought I’d found one by Matias, but the user
reviews aren’t convincing. Ideally, the arrow keys will be offset, and the
six-pack of keys will be included—Home, End, Page Up, etc. I have an Apple
keyboard but am looking for the full keyboard with number pad. Any thoughts?
Thank you kindly in advance.

Joe
