Trained audio engineer gives his opinion on the HomePod

2018-01-29 Thread Maria Reyes
Hi all,
Got this article from another list.

Audio Engineer Shares Thoughts After Spending an Hour with HomePod

Usman Qureshi7 hours ago
An audio engineer who goes by the name of WinterCharm on Reddit, got an hour to
play with the HomePod, following which he shared his initial thoughts on
Apple’s first ever smart speaker (via The Loop). When he heard the HomePod side
by side with the Sonos Play One and Google Home Max, he found it much better
than both in terms of sound quality.

He highlights how walking around in the room with HomePod playing never gives
the feeling like you’re leaving the sweet spot. The speakers sound accurate,
never introducing extra bass when the song didn’t call for it, he writes.
“Volume is more than adequate. 40% was fine for me. Pushing them to 80% was
really fun.”

Below are a few excerpts from his review:

“Fucking hell this thing is TINY. It’s really surprising to see it in person.
Hefting it is odd, too. The fabric is soft but firm. It was also lighter than I
was expecting. It’s also very pretty. Aside from the single cord coming out the
back, there is no idication that it has a particular side/front. It’s built to
blend into whatever space it’s in, rather than stand out.”

“The first impression was the neutrality of the speaker. The HomePods are tuned
for an as-true-to-recording sound. When the song calls for it, there is bass.
When the song turns to crystal clear highs, they are reproduced faithfully.
What really was interesting is the instrument separation in the room.”

“At about 45% volume, the HomePod FILLED the room I was in with some great
sound. When you walked away from it, the sound gets quieter, but not as quickly
as you’d expect. All the details were still there, just softer. there was no
feeling of walking out of the sweet spot that you get with a normal speaker.
And that’s when it hit me… Apple really has done it.”

Re: Don't want to see everyone's numbers in a group text

I have the same request. We use these large group texts at work, and
it's hard to keep up. I will say that it's a bit better if you go into
the Messages app instead of trying to read the messages on the lock screen.

I'm only aware of the one price, $349, in the US. The Home Pod does

Overcast and Streaming

2018-01-29 Thread Kelby Carlson
Does anyone know why even when all episodes are set to stream in
Overcast playing one will then cause that episode to take up space on a
device? For example, let's say I'm subscribed to one podcast and I have
it set to always stream. I click play on the first episode. When I check
the storage settings in Overcast, it says it has 10 MB from that podcast
and the podcast will play in airplane mode. I want my episodes to
*actually* stream, not download.

RE: moving apps

2018-01-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Changed compared to iOS 10 or iOS 9?
Nothing has changed compared to iOS 10, you flick down on any app you want to
move, Voiceover will say “Edit”, you now double tap.
Now flick down to “Drag app name where app name will be the name of the app,
e.g. if you are dragging camera it will say “Drag Camera”, double tap this.
Now flick to or touch the app where you want to move the Camera, say it’s
Calculator.
Flick up or down again to the appropriate option, e.g. Drop Camera before
Calculator, Drop Camera after Calculator or Create a new folder with Camera of
Calculator.
If you are trying to put something into an already existing folder, e.g.
Utilities, it would say “Drop Camera into Utilities.
Double tap whichever option you want and press the home button to end editing
mode.

HomePod Owners With an iTunes Match or Apple Music Subscription Can Access Their iCloud Music Library Using Siri

2018-01-29 Thread Mary Otten

HomePod Owners With an iTunes Match or Apple Music Subscription Can Access
Their iCloud Music Library Using Siri
MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors / Tim Hardwick

Apple began taking pre-orders for its HomePod on Friday, but the company has
remained unusually reticent regarding some of the Siri-based smart speaker's
finer functions.

Last week we learned that HomePod can play songs purchased through iTunes Music
as well as stream podcasts and Beats 1 radio, but Apple didn't address
questions about the device's handling of iTunes Match content stored in iCloud
Music Libraries.

For those unaware, iCloud Music Library lets users upload or "match" up to
100,000 songs from their personal music library with the DRM-free iTunes Store
catalog, without eating into their standard iCloud storage allocation. The
feature comes as part of Apple's iTunes Match service ($24.99 a year) and is
also included with every Apple Music subscription ($9.99 monthly).

As it turns out, both iTunes Match and Apple Music subscribers will be able to
use HomePod's Siri voice-based activation to access tracks stored in iCloud
Music Library. The detail was seemingly confirmed on Sunday by Apple, as
relayed by iMore's Serenity Caldwell in a tweet. Also Sunday, Daring Fireball's
John Gruber reported hearing similar iCloud Music Library support from "a
friend seeded with HomePod", although how Siri works with cloud-stored tracks
not matched with the official iTunes Store catalog remains unknown.

Okay, got some HomePod clarification: iTunes Match *and* Apple Music users can
access their iCloud Music Library via Siri. 🎊

— Serenity Caldwell (@settern) January 28, 2018

To reiterate, the user whose iCloud account is linked to HomePod can access
their Apple Music subscription, tracks stored in their Cloud Music Library, and
iTunes Store purchases via Siri. However, Siri will not be able to control any
content streamed over AirPlay from supporting devices.

Meanwhile, HomePod owners without an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscription
can still play music they've purchased on iTunes, as well as stream podcasts
and Beats 1 radio, but Siri requests for playing songs by name, genre, artist,
and so on will not be available. Apple has still to clarify how HomePod handles
Family Sharing subscriptions to Apple Music, and whether the speaker's
Bluetooth 5.0 specification means it will accept pairing requests from devices
over the Bluetooth protocol.

Apple has positioned the HomePod as a speaker that can stream Apple Music, but
with built-in Siri, users can also send messages, set timers and reminders,
check the news, control HomeKit-enabled smart home accessories, and complete
several other tasks without needing to take out their iPhone. The speaker is
equipped with spatial awareness and Apple-engineered audio technology,
including a seven‑tweeter array and high-excursion woofer. It stands almost
seven inches tall and is powered by Apple's A8 chip.

HomePod is available in the United States ($349), UK (£319), and Australia
($499). Apple is currently taking pre-orders for the HomePod, with the device
set to ship on Friday, February 9.

Consequently, each time I receive a reply I have to listen to all
those phone numbers read out before I get to the content of the
message and it's super annoying. Is there any way of hiding all these
numbers or quickly moving to the message part of the text?

Thanks

Subject: finding the number screen

I have an SE which I have only used to Send and receive calls. I always
use Siri to dial.

What do I do to get the phone screen up with the numbers?

Is there a way to always have the phone screen on top?

Thaniks for your help!
