Hi Jewel,
You won't find it until you have at least one voice besides the default voice,
then languages will show up in the rotor.

strange iMessaging issue

2018-03-31 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this issue. I can't say for
sure when it actually started.

Anyway, sometimes when I text others who have I devices, I noticed that
if they send a couple of texts back to back, that I usually can't read
the 1 before the last 1.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

If so, is there anything I can possibly do about it?

Is there some way to view all the messages?

This issue is rather annoying!

Thank you,

Terri

How do you enable the audio descriptions for Netflix? I just signed up and
wanted to watch a movie with it. Do I have to just look for ones that
describe? Thanks for any help you can give.

Why stop with Facebook? The download of my Google data was even more revealing, USA Today

2018-03-31 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

I am posting the following article because it references several apps that
are available on iOS.

Mark

How to download your Google data and what you'll find
By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY Updated 3:44 p.m. PDT Mar. 30, 2018

Curious to see how much a sprawling Internet company knows about your likes,
history and movements? Download your Google data.

This is the week many of us took a harder look at our Facebook data, spurred
by a reminder that we've allowed the social network incredible access to our
preferences, thoughts, movements and friends.
But Google tracks even more of our lives, as more people use Google for many
other parts of their days -including e-mail, calendar, web browsing and the
Android mobile operating system, which has an 85% market share of
smartphones, according to market tracker IDC.
Many of us started using Google before Facebook, and thanks to wildly
popular services like Google Maps and Waze, Google can keep tabs on our
every move. But the varied nature of Google's apps and products (which also
include No. 1 video site YouTube) mean that it may be keeping more on you
than you may realize.

I downloaded the Google data this week. Here's what I found.
Begin by going https://takeout.google.com/settings/takeout.
This is Google's data download page, where Google shows you all the various
units from the company. Google lets you choose whether to download the data
from all the categories from the Google universe or go piecemeal.
Choices include Calendar (what appointments I had), Chrome (my searches),
Drive (my saved uploads), Location History (everywhere I've driven to or
asked directions for in Google Maps), Play Music (what songs I listened to),
YouTube (videos) and Hangouts (who I interacted with.)
Gmail is not on the list, but the application keeps a record of your
e-mails, unless you've deleted them to make space. Last year Google said it
would stop reading your email to target ads.
You have the choice of getting the download via an e-mail link or having it
archived in your Google Drive, but this does count against your storage
quota, Google notes. (I subscribe to a 1TB backup, and it's already got 750
GB full, so I went for the partial download.)
But it's worth a look for everyone to see what information Google has and
take a few seconds to delete it all.
Google notes that in making the request, the download could take "hours, or
even days," to compile, depending upon how active a Google user you are.
Mine arrived in a few hours, delivered to Gmail. After unzipping the files,
most are categorized in clear-to-read English and go way back - mine to
2009.

The list included everything from the mundane (a voice request on Google
Home to solve 6*12.50), that I listened to Prince on Google Play last week,
watched a James Corden clip on YouTube and every Google search, made both
publicly and anonymously in Incognito mode.
That last bit of history was a surprise. Google tells users that searching
in Incognito mode means "Chrome doesn't save your browsing history" and
"basic browsing history information like URLs, cached page text, or IP
addresses of pages linked from the websites you visit."

We reached out to Google for comment, but have yet to hear back.
So if Google is holding onto your data, even when you think it's not, here's
a tip: delete it.

How to delete:

Go to Google's My Activity page.
>From there, Google lets you choose what to delete. The process is
cumbersome. You pick a date (today, this week, this month, all time) and the
category (say, Google Chrome.)

Select your date, hit enter and watch it all go away. Google says deleting
the data will mean less effective and speedier searches. I've been deleting
search histories for years, and Google is still lightning fast for me.

Irish web developer Dylan Curran was shocked at his findings when he looked
at what Google had on him. He tweeted his reaction, in a 37-tweet tweetstorm
that got widely read, with 4,400 comments and 160,000 retweets.
37. I would really appreciate it if you could help me out,
https://www.patreon.com/iamdylancurran , I will keep doing what I'm doing
and help as many people as I can irregardless of what happens. But if I can
dedicate myself to this full-time, we can definitely progress with change.
- Dylan Curran (@iamdylancurran) 6:49 PM - Mar 27, 2018

Curran was freaked that Google had kept his location and search history from
the Chrome browser, the names of files he had saved for backup on Google
Drive and even the ones he had deleted, along with every website he'd
visited via Google, going back over 10 years.
"They are collecting a lot more information than people would be aware of,"
he told us.
We spoke to Curran for a #TalkingTech podcast (click the audio below to

Here is how I buy Kindle books on my ios device. From the book: Kindle for iOS
Accessibility Gestures - Quick Reference Guide

Kindle Store: Buy & Download to your iOS Device

You can shop from the Kindle Store using the Safari browser and deliver Kindle
titles to the Kindle reading app on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Your
device must be connected to a wireless or data network in order to download
Kindle content to your Kindle reading app.

>From the Safari browser, visit the Kindle Store website:

· iPad: www.amazon.com/ipadkindlestore

· iPhone or iPad touch:
www.amazon.com/kindlemobilestore

1. Sign in to the Kindle Store with the same Amazon account you used when you
registered the Kindle reading app. Browse for Kindle titles you want to read,
and then tap to view the product detail page.

2. To send the Kindle title to your device, from the Send wirelessly to
drop-down menu, select your device. If you don't see your device, make sure you
signed in with the Amazon account registered to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod
touch.

3. Tip: Tap Try a Sample to download the beginning of a book for free.

4. After you purchase content, your titles are delivered to the Kindle app on
your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Check your cloud tab.

Subject: Amazon Kindle, can I buy using the app?

Hello Folks,
I have not used the Amazon Kindle app for a long time. When the App first came
out for iOS, it was not possible to use to purchase books. For a strange
reason I thought this feature has been added later. When I searched for a book
I want to buy today on the app, I was able to download a sample, but I could
not find a buy button.
Is it still not possible to purchase books using the Kindle app? How do I buy
the book I want then?
I appreciate your suggestions.

Cheers,

Hello Robert,

Now i am no expert.

Music unlimited is 4.99 Month.
Spotify is 9.99.

Don't know what amazon prime is, around seven ten uk pounds I think.

When you have bought music from amazon, then that music can form part of
your library and be available on-line.

To play your local music, requires the instalation of an media server,
and that will grab music files from a variety of local drives or network
addressable storage systems and the like, and stream it to the echo.

Good Luck.

Re: IPhone charge cycles

2018-03-31 Thread Gordon
It's not a good idea to leave it on the charger all the time. It doesn't
hurt the battery if you top it off even if it's not low. So for example,
you're getting ready for your Easter dinner and your battery is at 76.
It's not going to hurt to put it on the charger while you're in the
shower to bring it back up to 100 so you'll head out to your dinner with
a full battery.

For instant: I am going to my aunts tomorrow for Easter dinner. Which will be
in the mid afternoon. So, it I left my iPhone on the charger for this night and
the beginning of tomorrow morning before I go. Would this save a partial charge

The main concern is that: would I put stress on the battery, it I'm leaving it

2018-03-31 Thread Arlene
Actually, Terri, while you have a solution of using the phone as a music and
book player, you could also use it as a phone with t-mobile's digits
service. You would pay $10 a month if you chose to purchase the service, and
the phone number would be the same as your existing phone number. I have
digits on the ipad mini, so when I get a call on my cell phone, both ring,
my phone and the ipad mini, so I could answer whichever I'm closest to. For
more details you could give t-mobile a call and they could go through all
the details with you that's if you would ever want to consider that as well
as using the phone as a book and music player. Just another idea. We just
found out about this recently.

Also Best Buy might give you store credit. I just took an old iPad there

I was going to use it as my mp3 player. But it's only a 16 gig model,

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.

IPhone charge cycles

2018-03-31 Thread Daniel McGee
Hello everyone

Since we only have so many charge cycles until our iPhone batteries start to
degrade and find it more difficult to hold a charge. I was just wondering if
many of you leave it on a charger all the time. Until you need to go out
somewhere or at least find yourself in a situation where the phone is required.

For instant: I am going to my aunts tomorrow for Easter dinner. Which will be
in the mid afternoon. So, it I left my iPhone on the charger for this night and
the beginning of tomorrow morning before I go. Would this save a partial charge
cycle or two?

The main concern is that: would I put stress on the battery, it I'm leaving it
on charge for all this time?

If you are a T Mobile customer and are over 55 years old, take advantage of
the unlimited 55 plus program. You can get one line for $50 per month, with
unlimited talk, text, and data. And you can get two lines for $60 even if
the second line is for someone who is under 55. Also, if you are a baseball

Subject: Made decision regarding my iPhones

Hello everyone,

First of all, I appreciate the advice I got, regarding rather or not to
recycle my 1 iPhone. i also appreciate the thoughts and advice,
regarding rather or not to purchase an iPod.

I hadn't realized that it had been 3 years since the last iPod Touch was
released. I also didn't realize that the Nano was no more. SO I am glad
to now have this information.

I did have an iPad Mini for a while. I liked it for the most part. I
loved the sound quality, and the battery life.

However, it was too costly for me, and I didn't care for the split
screen. Also, keeping up with all those products was something I didn't
really care for.

So I feel what I am going to do for now is, use that iPhone that I can't
actually use as a phone, as my music and audiobook player. I might as
well use it for something, until at some point I can't use it. Then I
can make a decision from there, once that happens.

I did make a call to T-mobile earlier, just to find out what my options
were. I have jump on-demand. So if I really wanted to do so, i could get
a different phone every month. No, that's honestly not something I want
to do at all. But it's nice to know that I could upgrade my iPhone.

Maybe at some point I will do this. But for now what I have works.

Thank you again to those of you who offered your thoughts and advice.
It's appreciated.

Left, right arrows, turns on, then off, quick nav.

This is not my problem. As I wrote, I believe the problem is a setting

culprit..smile.

Still need to know which setting to change? is it a VO language setting,
is it a matter of removing spare unwanted languages, but why is the
language change being triggered?

Re: Echo?

2018-03-31 Thread Joe Paton
Hello Robert,

Now i am no expert.

Music unlimited is 4.99 Month.
Spotify is 9.99.

Don't know what amazon prime is, around seven ten uk pounds I think.

When you have bought music from amazon, then that music can form part of
your library and be available on-line.

To play your local music, requires the instalation of an media server,
and that will grab music files from a variety of local drives or network
addressable storage systems and the like, and stream it to the echo.

Good Luck.

Re: Amazon Kindle, can I buy using the app?

2018-03-31 Thread Russ Kiehne

· iPhone or iPad touch: www.amazon.com/kindlemobilestore

Hi,
Two things to check.
One, did the mute switch get flipped down which will silence sounds, but it
will still vibrate.

Two, did you check that Do Not Disturb did not get enabled accidentally?

Also Best Buy might give you store credit. I just took an old iPad there
yesterday. It only had 16 GB on it and was running real slow. I was going to
keep it but decided to take it to Best Buy. I got a $65.00 gift card to use at

If you don't have so much extra cash I would say just buy the battery
pack and call it a day. The IPod 6g is a bad buy because of how old it
already is.

Thanks Richard, I am feeling very stupid the mute was on. I have never
knowingly pressed that button. I put the phone in a drawer when I go to bed I
think the phone touched some of the other clutter in that drawer.

Many thanks

I go to bed. It must have touched something to turn it off, as I have never
knowingly put the phone on mute.

Many thanks

Janet, for those of us that are really knew, how would you put mav on? I
would really appreciate knowing this because whenever I've tried typing with
my bluetoothkeyboard, no letters appearently are written and I didn't know
why, so what you wrote about here, as simple as it is was something that
someone like me needed to know. Thank you.

Re: Use my phone, or purchase an iPod?

2018-03-31 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
I lvoe this, and feels to true - Phone is about the worst aspect of an iPhone!.

But I take both routes, keeping an old button Nokia handy on the one hand and
an old ipad on the other. Echo is about to encroach on
the entertainment side next; so my solutions are getting quite eclectic now.

BobH, still finding way around the 21st century. Still got a toe in the XP

If battery life is the concern why not take the money that you would spend
on the iPod
and buy an external battery or something like the Mophie juicepack, which is
a case with a built in external battery. Or you can take that money and
upgrade to an iPhone with more storage, or the 7 or 8 plus which have larger
batteries. Personally, I like having as few devices as possible, but it's a
personal decision. Some folks opt for a cheap flip phone for making and
taking calls, and either an iPhone or iPod Touch for the other stuff, as the
phone is probably the worst thing about an iPhone.

Re: Use my phone, or purchase an iPod?

2018-03-31 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
This is where we use a previous phone, or get an iPad Mini, which has bigger
speaker output than a phone if you don't want it
connected to other bits; though bluetooth and speakers is almost agiven these
days. I keep meaning to move into a spare 6+ MrsH
abandoned, so I took for repair. Agree to keep pure entertainment off phone and
keep it for more important comms.

Subject: Use my phone, or purchase an iPod?

Hello once more everyone,

I always try to think things out and make good decisions. That's
important to me. So lately I have been wondering if I should purchase an
iPod, or not. I know some people use their phone for everything. If you
can do that and like doing that, then that's awesome!

However, my current phone is an SE, and has 32 gigs of space. I do play
Apple music from my phone, as well as some games. I also make a lot of
calls pretty regularly, as well as texting. Sometimes there are days
where I run my battery down quicker than other days.

Honestly, I would like to have an iPod for mostly listening to music,
reading, playing games on it, and possibly a few other things. I want to
have my phone for calling and texting, and some other Apps I don't
always want to have to worry about my phone's battery. Especially if I
am out somewhere.

I had an iPod many years ago, and I liked it. I purchased it used.

So here's my big question.

Is an iPod really a good investment?

I ask this, because I know every couple of years or so, I would have to
purchase a new iPod, in order to keep it current. If not, then it will
become out of date, and possibly not function properly.

It's the same thing with the iPhone really. I have to say that this is
the only disappointing thing about different technologies. I mean, I'd
rather be able to update stuff, and not necessarily have to purchase
new, in order for the device to continue to work.

So if I do decide to purchase an iPod, is it best to purchase new, or
refirbished?

I think I know the answer to this. But I figured I would ask anyway.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Canada is pretty new to the Echo skill ecosystem. Many people use a U.S.
address in order to get access to more amazon Echo
functionality. But if it grows anywhere nearly as quickly as it grew in every
other country I think it will come in to its own
before long.
I like the voice control that amazon Music gives me. and with Unlimited I
rarely come across something that I cannot hear. Usually
if amazon Music Unlimited doesn't have it Apple does. And it often works the
other way around for me as well. Although at this time
Apple does not have voice control. I'm hoping that comes soon.

in the UK, amazon prime music, has over 2 million songs and growing, and if you
have music unlimited, it has over 40 million songs.

So it is certainly not pathetic, here in the UK.

It must be different for you, in canada.

Alexa can play a lot of music, but when you compare it to Apple Music, Spotify

which you get with an Amazon Prime subscription has a mere 1 Million songs
compared to the around 40 million songs from the other

I'll add to Sieghard's excellent overview that Alexa and the Amazon Echoes are
great for listening to podcasts. You don't even need
to enable any additional skills to do this. You just need to know the name of
the podcast. For example, you can say "Alexa, play
AppleVis podcast" and she'll play the latest episode of that podcast. Very
convenient.

in the UK, amazon prime music, has over 2 million songs and growing, and if
you have music unlimited, it has over 40 million songs.

So it is certainly not pathetic, here in the UK.

It must be different for you, in canada.

Dave.

Alexa can play a lot of music, but when you compare it to Apple Music,
Spotify or Deezer it's positively pathetic. Amazon Music which you get with
an Amazon Prime subscription has a mere 1 Million songs compared to the
around 40 million songs from the other services.

Aah, now that appeals. Bro' was on about music, but not sure how that was
done either. Podcasts have persistently illuded me so far, so lots to play
with TG!

Thanks, BobH.

I'll add to Sieghard's excellent overview that Alexa and the Amazon Echoes
are great for listening to podcasts. You don't even need
to enable any additional skills to do this. You just need to know the name
of the podcast. For example, you can say "Alexa, play
AppleVis podcast" and she'll play the latest episode of that podcast. Very
convenient.

Do these service cost? Do you get to download and keep?

I have my own music, and can't really play it. An SD card slot on one of these
owuld be like - Wonderful, especially if you could
talk it through a lengthy folder structure.

Thanks, BobH.

Re: couple of IPhone questions if I may!

2018-03-31 Thread Arlene
Janet, for those of us that are really knew, how would you put mav on? I
would really appreciate knowing this because whenever I've tried typing with
my bluetoothkeyboard, no letters appearently are written and I didn't know
why, so what you wrote about here, as simple as it is was something that
someone like me needed to know. Thank you.

Hi Jo, this may be nothing but with a magic keyboard like most others you
have to check whether mav is on or off before you can put text in. sorry
if this is like teaching your mother to suck eggs but just thought I would
say. Janet

Subject: couple of IPhone questions if I may!

Hi all,

First, we are running latest encarnation of IOS on an Iphone 7 english
uk as default language.
When the browser, safari, is sent to the mikesradioworld.com
website, The spoken output, is in a non-english language.
It sounds like chinese, but I can't be sure.

If the browser is sent to the BBC web site, it behaves.

How to prevent Voiceover changing languages, and why would you want it
to do that.

On another IOS device, there doesn't appear to be much text available on
mikes radio world site , but the language doesn[t change.

Next, is a magic keyboard problem.

The keyboard connects to the device, you can traverse the home screens,
and property sheets for say adding a contact, but when it comes to
entering alphabetics, into the text boxes, nothing. Nada. boing, boing,
boing, but no characters in the edit box. You can add them from the
on-screen keyboard, but not from the magic blue tooth device.

When I pair the magic blue tooth keyboard to e second phone, it works
fine, so I guess this is a phone fault or phone setting that needs to be
changed.

Thanks for reading.

Really hammering down with rain, in the southeast of england.
