Right, it's only Apple's own Airpods which work worse than any other bluetooth
headset on the market with Apple's own Apple Watch.
Steve Jobbs used to say "it just works" or that "it's like magic". I guess this
is o longer the case, however.

Hello Donna,

You're quite welcome.

Do not be too hard on yourself where the connection of Apple Watch to AirPods
is concerned. Apple still has some compatibility tweaking to do, where they
are concerned. Give it a little time.

I realize that you want to use your Apple Watch during your exercise routine
with AirPods, however, in the meantime, your iPhone will work just fine as an
exercise tool, in conjunction with Airpods and Apple Watch.

Donna, for the best results, you really need to get to know almost every aspect
of how VoiceOver works with Apple Watch. So, explore everything. I'm not
necessarily referring to the many different watch faces but, rather, all of the
settings and configuration options available to you.

Learn, for example, how to install and remove apps from the watch so that you
can do it with confidence.

Also, understand that where you place a third-party Complication, on a watch
face, may vary the data it displays.

Once you have mastered this, you may consider installing a variety of
third-party apps that can help you better track your exercise routine.

For example, my preferred step counter is FitPort. However, another popular
step counter is Pedometer++. Still another highly recommended step counting
app is Duffy.

As for me, I prefer not to have any music on my Apple Watch for several reasons
the primary of which is the conservation of Apple Watch battery power.

So, for example, before any predetermined exercise routine, I make certain that
FitPort is launched on the watch then I engage music on my iPHone as I begin to
exercise.

Of course, there is also the workout app that is extremely accessible and very
popular. Personally, however, I find it a bit too cumbersome to use early in
the morning when I begin to exercise.

For me, I prefer to track my steps throughout the day.

It's a good idea to get extremely familiar with all aspects of the Health app,
on your iPHone as many third-party apps will use the Health app to store and in
some cases, read and write updated data.

Just give yourself some time and it will all begin to make sense.

Mark

Hi Mark,

Thanks a lot for the tip to activate crown navigation. As soon as I read your
post, I followed your instructions and started scrolling with the crown. I do
like it better than tapping and touching.

Unfortunately, I still haven’t conquered pairing the AirPods with the Apple

two devices connect via Bluetooth.

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to help.

'Black dot of death' Unicode bug can crash Messages on iPhone, Mashable

2018-05-09 Thread M. Taylor
'Black dot of death' is crashing iMessage, and there's only one way to fix it
By Rachel Kraus, 11 hours ago

Apparently we live in a universe where crashing your friend's phone is
considered a fun prank.

There's a new bug going around that can paralyze the iPhone's Messages app if
it receives a message with a particular character, and not even a reboot will
fix it. As reported by Cult of Mac, the bug is called the "black dot of death,"
but it's not actually the black dot emoji (⚫) that does the damage.

SEE ALSO: Apple uses Siri in workaround for iPhone Messages crash bug

Instead, a thousands-character-long string of invisible Unicode text, which
accompanies the dot, does the damage. The text is too much for the Messages app
to handle, rendering it unusable, crashing every time the user tries to launch
it. The bug affects iOS 11.3 and the iOS 11.4 betas.
A YouTuber with the handle EverythingApplePro appears to have created the bug.
With it, "pranksters" can send a message to their (soon to be former) friends
that can contains the black dot emoji — as well as that string of invisible
text. As soon as the recipient opens the message, Messages freezes. And just
like the bug that made the rounds in February that involved a character in the
Indian language Telugu, restarting the app or rebooting your phone won't fix it.

The only fix, according the the YouTuber, is to use 3D Touch on the Messages
icon on the iPhone's home screen. Push hard and you'll see the Quick Actions
menu, tap "New Message," and that should do the trick. If you have an iPhone
without 3D Touch, however, you'll be out of luck (sorry, iPhone SE owners).

The black dot of death bug is said to be the iPhone remix of a similar exploit
that made the rounds on WhatsApp for Android. At least it's an
equal-opportunity bug now.

Mashable has contacted Apple to learn if and when it will release a fix for the
bug; we'll update this story with any new information.

I did get one from there back when I had my 4S. These Hadley videos have been a

it and just send to the list in the body of an email.

Hi Carolyn,

I'm npot exactly sure what your question is, but here is how you add or
delete things from the roter on your iPhone.

Go into settings then general then accessibility. The first category is
vision and right below that you will find "voiceover on." Perform a single
finger double tap. Don't worry that won't turn off VO.

On the next screen the first entry will say voiceover on. This is where
VO may be turned on or off. Continue flicking down the screen until you reach
the "roter" button and double tap it. The next screen will show all the
elements you can have in your roter. If you explore it you will find some
elements will say selected and some not. This is probably self explanatory, but
selecting will include the element on your roter and unselecting it will
exclude it. Once you have the roter configured the way you want, double tap the
button in the upper left corner that says voiceover back. Keep double tapping
the back button until you have backed out of settings entirely and are back on
your home screen.

I hope this helps.

When you change the rate via the rotor, it changes by 5
percent. When

you adjust it in settings, it adjusts by 10 percent.

So, adding it to the rotor does give you a little finer control.

Yes, thanks. I'll save this one for a while until I get it down pat.

Best regards,

Hi Carolyn,

I'm npot exactly sure what your question is, but here is how you add or delete
things from the roter on your iPhone.

Go into settings then general then accessibility. The first category is vision
and right below that you will find "voiceover on." Perform a single finger
double tap. Don't worry that won't turn off VO.

On the next screen the first entry will say voiceover on. This is where VO may
be turned on or off. Continue flicking down the screen until you reach the
"roter" button and double tap it. The next screen will show all the elements
you can have in your roter. If you explore it you will find some elements will
say selected and some not. This is probably self explanatory, but selecting
will include the element on your roter and unselecting it will exclude it. Once
you have the roter configured the way you want, double tap the button in the
upper left corner that says voiceover back. Keep double tapping the back
button until you have backed out of settings entirely and are back on your home
screen.

I hope this helps.

Except if you use it for swimming, then make sure you don't forget to turn off
crown navigation or else you can't get the watch out of water lock unless you
turn off Voiceover first.

Hello Donna,

Congratulations on your new Apple Watch.

I'm not certain if John covered this in this thread but I strongly suggest that
you enable Digital Crown Navigation. When the watch is awake, two-finger,
triple-tap the display in order to toggle this feature on and off. When
Digital Crown Navigation is enabled, you can use the Digital Crown, (the knob
located adjacent to the long button on the side of the device, to navigate
around the display area, as opposed to using swipe gestures or the
explore-by-touch method, in order to locate various complications.

I think the modular watch face is the best one for beginners.

Finally, almost all of the major configuration of the watch can be done from
the Watch app, located on the iPhone.

Hi sandra,

Are you planning to use BARD Mobile? If so, download the braille book in BARD
Mobile; it will handle the unzipping. If you are using a different method, you
can unzip the book on the Mac by locating it in Finder and pressing Command-O
or Command-Down Arrow. The Mac will unzip the book into a folder with the same
name as the zip file.

Re: Changing Payment on Phone

2018-05-09 Thread Tom Lange
Hi.
It’s been quite some time since I’ve had to do that, probably a year or so.
When I switched from a credit card to a debit card I had to reacquaint myself
with how to set the expiration month, date and year. The month, day and year
each had a picker item which appeared in the lower right corner of the screen
and, they each had to be dealt with separately. To do that, I would manipulate
the values in each picker item by flicking up or down until I reached the
desired value, then flick to the left and double-tap the Done button which
appeared immediately to the left of the picker. It’s critical to understand
that activating the Done button freezes the selected value in the picker,
otherwise you’d lose it when moving on to the next one, which is frustrating
and crazy-making. When I first encountered this situation years ago I almost
got kicked out of a taxi because the driver thought I was yelling at him.
Frankly I don’t know why Apple couldn’t just simply ask you for a date in
mm/dd/ format or whatever is required in your location. I hope this helps
some.

How many hours was it for the phone to drop from 100% to 89%? If it was

Subject: Help with SE battery drain

Recently I charged my SE to 100% and lay the fully charged phone on my night
table.  In the morning, the charge was down to 89%. Before I went to sleep that
evening, the charge was down to 60%. I did not make or receive any calls.  What
could be going on to cause battery drainage without my using the phone?

What should I check to make sure I have  the phone set for the most efficient
battery usage?

Thanks so much for your help and suggestions.

Re: Help with SE battery drain

2018-05-09 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Those levels don't strike me as bad enough to worry about yet. But my phones
are older, could be battery starting to lose it's
ability a bit, it happens, it's expected. The onset of this will depend how
long you had it and how heavy you used it, in terms of
how often you got to recharge it before. A frequent user would need to charge
every day, I used to get away with once a week, but
not now. I'm sure others will point you at things to check, amazing how iOs
updates can put things back on that you turned off
years ago.

Recently I charged my SE to 100% and lay the fully charged phone on my
night table. In the morning, the charge was down to 89%. Before I went
to sleep that evening, the charge was down to 60%. I did not make or
receive any calls. What could be going on to cause battery drainage
without my using the phone?

What should I check to make sure I have the phone set for the most
efficient battery usage?

Thanks so much for your help and suggestions.

Re: My first Apple Watch – series 3

2018-05-09 Thread John Panarese
The easiest thing to do is choose a watch face that includes the battery
indicator as a complication. I have done this with the modular watch face.
Also, you can include any complication as an "auto speak" item. So, for
example, when I tap the watch to get it to tell the time, I have it set to also
announce the battery level as well.

Re: chanin speech on iPhone

2018-05-09 Thread Kimber Gardner
Hi Carolyn,

I'm npot exactly sure what your question is, but here is how you add
or delete things from the roter on your iPhone.

Go into settings then general then accessibility. The first category
is vision and right below that you will find "voiceover on." Perform a
single finger double tap. Don't worry that won't turn off VO.

On the next screen the first entry will say voiceover on. This is
where VO may be turned on or off. Continue flicking down the screen
until you reach the "roter" button and double tap it. The next screen
will show all the elements you can have in your roter. If you explore
it you will find some elements will say selected and some not. This is
probably self explanatory, but selecting will include the element on
your roter and unselecting it will exclude it. Once you have the roter
configured the way you want, double tap the button in the upper left
corner that says voiceover back. Keep double tapping the back button
until you have backed out of settings entirely and are back on your
home screen.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, John, really appreciate your help.

Now I am easily able to find a notification Center, as well as the control
center. Is there a quick way to also see how much battery life is remaining?
That would be really helpful as well.

Guess I will have to keep working on. My air pots. I will try again, ensuring
that my iPhone is, either off, or know where in range of the watch.

Again, thanks a bunch.

When you change the rate via the rotor, it changes by 5 percent. When you
adjust it in settings, it adjusts by 10 percent.
So, adding it to the rotor does give you a little finer control.

Re: My first Apple Watch – series 3

2018-05-09 Thread John Panarese
Hello,
The notification center for the Apple Watch can easily be reached from the
main screen by flicking up or down with one finger until you hear,
notifications. Double tap with one finger and you'll be able to view all of
your notifications.

I have paired my Air Pods, though it wasn't as easily as it is made to
sound to occur. You have to be sure your other Apple Devices are not in range
or the Phone, for example, will offer the pairing request. In my case, after
some effort, it just seemed that the watch suddenly started working with the
Air Pods. I put the case against the watch, took the air pods out of their
case and put them on. They just started to work, but this happened after a good
five or six attempts.

Subject: first model apple watch problem with latest software

Hello list
I did an upgrade and now I have no speech. I do hear the clicks when I move my
finger on the screen. When I press the round button three times quickly I hear
“voice over off” but pressing it again three times quickly does not bring
speech back, however I can hear the clicks again. I did a factory reset and a
fresh setup but the problem still persists. Does anyone else experience this
and how does one report this to apple. I can not phone because phone calls from
South Africa are quite expensive.
Regards
Fanus

Re: Any VO accessible drum, beat, rhythm app?

2018-05-09 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
Doesn't garage band do that?

I wanted something like this to act as metronome or provide rhythm backing I
could play to.

Hi,

Has anyone found a VO accessible drum, beat, rhythm app?

Thanks, Keith
