Switching from Apple music family, back to individual

2018-08-02 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hello everyone,

Could someone please tell me how I would switch my Apple music
subscription back to an individual plan?

Do I have to wait until the day the subscription is supposed to renew?
Or can I change it before then?

I tried to change it back about a week or so ago. I was told I already
had a plan. So I am thinking I did something wrong.

Thank you,

Terri

Go to settings, then general and about phone. Flick a couple of times
and you'll see the name of your iPhone and can tap there to change it.

Re: Latency with using Bluetooth earbuds

2018-08-02 Thread Andy Baracco
This is common with older or less expensive bluetooth headphones. I recently
purchased a set of Gentek bluetooth earbuds that look similar to Air pods, but
cost only $25. The lag is horrible.
However, I have found almost no lag using Plantronics or Aftershokz headsets.

I’m using my first pair of Bluetooth earbuds. Is it a given that Bluetooth
earphones will have a slight latency or delay when using touch navigation on
the phone? This slight delay makes me really have to slow down moving around
the screen, especially in apps like Voice Dream where there are several
controls very close together. If I’m not careful, I end up tapping on the wrong
button because I was ahead of what I’m hearing. Is this just the norm when
using Bluetooth that I need to just get used to or are some Bluetooth devices
better than others for this issue?

There are, however, iOS apps also for Word, Excel and Powerpoint and they are

Peggy,
If the phone is locked, the two finger double tap will do nothing until it is

And if you wait a minute or less, it will just lock again.
It is a little hard to describe, but when the phone is locked, the screen

The screen which was not the lock screen, but the regular vdr screen, said
play, which is what it should say if the thing is paused. I then hit the side
button on my phone to lock the screen and opened it again with the same button.
So here I am on the lock screen, and I’m not seeing any button, not clay not
pause not anything. But if I double tap with two fingers, voice dream starts
reading, which is what I expected to do. So what lock screen are you referring
to where you see a button that should be play but is labeled pause. I’m just
not seeing that.

Reggie,

With focus on the Updates button in the Apps Store bottomline menu, go to the
top of the listed applications and do a 3 finger swipe down to refresh the
list. This used to happen automatically but a few iOS versions back it stopped
refreshing automatically so you have to do this 3 finger swipe refresh.

2018-08-02 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Reggie,
If you open the App Store on your phone, and then go to the top after it says
update all, and do a three finger swipe down, that should put you in business.
I’m not sure where the actual top limit is. So if that doesn’t work, mess
around in there, and you’ll get it. Somebody else will probably come along with
the exact instructions. But the three finger swipe down from the top, not the
one that brings up the screen where you have airplane mode at Cetera, but below
that, that’s what you want.

Re: Voicedream Dropbox Issue

2018-08-02 Thread Mary Otten
I’m sorry, but I cannot read reproduce this bug. If I start playing a book in
Voice Dream, then I hit the side button on my phone to lock the screen, and
then I hit the side button again to show me the lock screen, the button on the
screen says ponds. It should say that, since the book is still playing. So I
double tap the pause button, and the reading stops and the button says play. I
open voice dream, and with in the app, that also says play. I’m just not seeing
this problem. Like I say, I don’t know about headphones. But I can’t blame
Winston for asking you to quit reporting something if he can’t duplicate it. I
mean after all, developers can’t fix it if they can’t duplicate it. It is very
frustrating. I have had to build my library over again a couple of times with
voice dream bugs. But this one I simply cannot reproduce.

Re: Voicedream Dropbox Issue

2018-08-02 Thread pegkane52

Hi I don’t notice an issue with Dropbox but I do know that when I start playing
a document that is in Voice Dream if I lock my screen on this using the side
button it still continues to play but if I double tap using two fingers it does
not cause until I tap my home button and then I can get the document to Paul
was not sure if I’m confused or what’s going on I don’t even see a setting for
locked screen is there somewhere to look for that setting?
Thanks very much.

Re: Voicedream Dropbox Issue

2018-08-02 Thread Mary Otten
OK, I did the following. Open Voice Dream. Selected a book and hit the play
button. I let it read for sometime, less than a minute. I hit the pause button.

I have no idea what the problem could be. I've uninstalled and reinstalled VDR.
I have checked the battery settings and it is definitely VDR draining the
battery. As long as I actually close the app with the app switcher it doesn't
happen, but that's the only workaround.

The one-time watering screen works fine for me. As I said, the only
issue I found was the selection of zones when setting up a schedule.
Other than that I would put the application down as fully accessible.

Another item of note is that the developer has been very good at
accepting accessibility suggestions and is fairly willing to work at
making updates that are needed.

For whatever it might be worth, I cannot confirm your second bug about voice
dream not stopping when you hit pause. I have not noticed any battery drain.
And since I never use page navigation, I guess I never noticed that there was a
go to page button. Maybe it didn’t work well? Maybe the future itself is buggy
so they stopped it? I don’t know. This seems very on like Winston to not want

Re: Voicedream Dropbox Issue

2018-08-02 Thread Richard Turner

Well, perhaps you oalso should write the developer. But I'd make sure the files
have completely loaded on Dropbox first.
I've had times when it took a while for the file to sync after copying it to
dropbox on my computer before it was available to VDR. And no, I'm not using
the cloud sync in VDR, I'm talking only about Dropbox syncing.
I just went through all my dropbox folders from VDR, and on Dropbox, and
everything is there.

I hope you can sort out the issue.

when it is not, which severely drains the battery. So all of these things make
it more frustrating.

Re: Voicedream Dropbox Issue

2018-08-02 Thread Marie N.
I have been having a very similar issue with VDR and Drop box. It does not see
all the content on Drop Box and it even varies from time to time. I had not
used the app for some time and just began using it again and I put tthree Book
in the Zip format on Drop box and only one shows up in VDR and it is the last
one I put in.

Yes, I have tried this. I have also tried disconnecting Dropbox from VDR
completely.

I know it is a VDR issue because my Dropbox displays everything, and VDR only
finds a few of the main folders.

RE: Voicedream Dropbox Issue

2018-08-02 Thread Alan Lemly
Kelby,

Just out of curiosity, do you have cloud sync turned on in your Voice Dream
settings? I know that has caused issues with other users in the past so I've
never turned it on and like Richard, for me Dropbox is working fine with Voice
Dream Reader.

Have you tried going into Content Sources in your Voice Dream Settings and
turning Dropbox off and then back on again?

I assume you're running the latest version of iOS 11?

Hi Reggie and List:
I still use a Windows computer for the Web and other long writing tasks.

To my surprise, Safari on my iPhone works very well with my Texas Bank site and
I have quit using my computer to do banking because I think Ios is more secure.

It might help to make a list of tasks you wish to do and go from there.

Please write me of list.

Hi, first, please call me Reggie. I can't take credit for my tag line. It
actually was in a short newsletter on Yorkshire terriers. There was no credit
given so I stole it. LOL! I loved it also, and it got my guide and pet an extra
hug. Of course you know what happens when you assume it is fine, but so far the
writer has not shown up to give me what-for for using. Thus, assuming, be my
guest to use.

As for my age? I was born in 1952. Yup, one of those oldies! 😉😇

The idea of compactness and portability are attractive, but honestly, the

I have an i phone 8 plus and love it, use it all the time, for calls and more,

2018-08-02 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan
Interesting thread. I use my Windows computer for most internet stuff and
email, my BrailleSense for anything I don't want to use speech for like
reading the church bulletin during church or choir words as we sing the anthem,
, and my IPhone for almost everything else. Aren't we blessed to have so many
options!
God bless!

I agree! There are still things better and easier done with a PC. Printing

Hi,

I know for me, getting totally rid of the desk top or laptop wouldn’t work.

I am a writer, and I just can’t imagine spending long hours trying to write
a document on the phone, even with a bluetooth keyboard connected. for one
thing, I haven’t yet found a bluetooth keyboard that I like the feel of and
that I can write at a reasonabley fast speed on. I also have a rather large
collection of files, and this collection is too large to just throw up into
the cloud. To my knowledge, there still is no way to connect a portable
hard drive to the phone or i pad and access files from it.

The idea of compactness and portability are attractive, but honestly, the
macbook air is all that, so I guess that’s as small as I’ll get for serious
computing.

I have an i phone 8 plus and love it, use it all the time, for calls and
more, just not for serious work.

Hi, there!

Some people already said some good things, Sieghard made some nice points
and here's my point of view.

First of all, I'm 42 year old and I started using PC when I was 20 in
1996. I got my first dumb cellphone at age of 23 in 1999.

I actually spent first half of my life using landline phone and some
overgrown calculators such as ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64. When I started
to use PC I used it for almost everything. Web browsing, email, chat, VOIP
telephony, writing and reading documents, whatching movies, listening to
music, whatever you can think of. There was a time when I was using my PC
as alarm clock xD.

I started to use smartphones as of 2004. or something and I got my first
iPhone on 2012. I have to say I use my iPhone to some level but if I need
to do some serious writting, some extended websearch, even for reading 50
emails or more I'd rather sit in front of my desk and turn my PC on. Maybe
this is easier for sighted folks to acomplish on small touch screen but
I'm pretty much bounded if I can't use keyboard with all ten fingers.

For some years now I was using iPhone and Windows laptop but since I'm
passionate music listener some months ago I purchased Minix Windows box
and connected it to my TV and HiFi system. I wasn't satisfied with
performance, it was to slow using Windows 10 and Jaws on just 2 gigs of
RAM so I replaced it with serious desktop machine with I5, 8 gigs of RAM
and SSD. Of course, I found horizontal desktop case and put it in my
living room below the TV set. Now I have a decent multimedia player, have
my screen reader talk through HDMI and TV speakers while other sound plays
through HiFi system.

I turned my dumb Grundig TV into a smart one xD. i could use something
from iOS family like old iPad or iPod touch for this purpose and I tried
but it was not so comfortable. I have to say I never learned to use iOS
with a keyboard and I have 14 years of experience with Jaws and later NVDA
so this was also one of the reasons I decided to get this PC instead of
some iOS device. Before Minix I tried Apple TV but I got very disapointed
with its capabilities. I wanted to be able to browse the web and read
email but there's no such thing on Apple TV.

Maybe I should have go for Mac Mini instead of Windows desktop, the price
was more less the same, I don't know but I don't have the time to learn
new system and new screen reader and on the other hand Windows and Jaws
are part of me for more than twenty years.

So, the answer is I like my iPhone, as a matter of fact I can't live
without it but still can't use it as the one and only computing device.
Maybe this is because I'm, old fashionned, maybe because I'm not using
keyboard with iOS but this is my experience.

P.S. There's not a single chance in a million years I would write this
long email using virtual keyboard, even on BSI or MBraille xD.

Hi,
What was wrong with it?

I used it last night, quite successfully on my iPad.

Other than the fact that I can’t figure out how to select text.

Can anyone help with that?

2018-08-02 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi!

Well to be honest, I wasn't aware of these form factors. To be more
precise, I doubt Mini PCs are available for purchase in Croatia. I saw
some Windows Boxes similar to Minix but the hardware inside those are
not so fast as on usual desktop. Since the work is done and I already
have this PC runjnin/g I'll be more careful when the time for change
comes. At least I managed to choose specific motherboard, RAM and SSD so
it works like a charm, 20 seconds from pushing the button to desktop,
another 20 seconds for Jaws to speak, this is really great for Windows
PC. But, we're getting off topic here so thanks for the tip for Mini PCs./

full I3, I5 or I7 desktop processors, most support at least 16 and more often
32Gb of RAM and they have room for 1 or 2 SSD's. They are the size of a Mac
Mini or in some cases maybe just a tiny bit larger, but still very small more
or less square boxes with HDMI and/or DVI monitor outputs, usually 4 rear USB
and two front, of course RJ45 ethernet as well as wireless and bluetooth modems
and a 3.5mm combination headphone/microphone jack. In the case of the HP
EliteDesk mini PC's they even have very basic built-in speakers, but they are
not very loud. Some of these like the Intel NUC (it stands for next unit of
computing) come with wall-mount brackets and I really like these little PC's,
they are as powerful as you want them to be and they are small and silent.
Sometimes when the fan really kicks in on my HP units you can hear it, but not
usually.
Here in Canada these sell for usually around $600 to $900 depending on how much
RAM, how large anSSD and so on. You can buy cheaper desktops and laptops in the
price range, but if you want a quality desktop in a very small form factor then
these are great.

Hi, there!

Some people already said some good things, Sieghard made some nice points and
here's my point of view.

First of all, I'm 42 year old and I started using PC when I was 20 in 1996. I
got my first dumb cellphone at age of 23 in 1999.

I actually spent first half of my life using landline phone and some overgrown
calculators such as ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64. When I started to use PC I
used it for almost everything. Web browsing, email, chat, VOIP telephony,
writing and reading documents, whatching movies, listening to music, whatever
you can think of. There was a time when I was using my PC as alarm clock xD.

I started to use smartphones as of 2004. or something and I got my first iPhone
on 2012. I have to say I use my iPhone to some level but if I need to do some
serious writting, some extended websearch, even for reading 50 emails or more
I'd rather sit in front of my desk and turn my PC on. Maybe this is easier for
sighted folks to acomplish on small touch screen but I'm pretty much bounded if
I can't use keyboard with all ten fingers.

For some years now I was using iPhone and Windows laptop but since I'm
passionate music listener some months ago I purchased Minix Windows box and
connected it to my TV and HiFi system. I wasn't satisfied with performance, it
was to slow using Windows 10 and Jaws on just 2 gigs of RAM so I replaced it
with serious desktop machine with I5, 8 gigs of RAM and SSD. Of course, I found
horizontal desktop case and put it in my living room below the TV set. Now I
have a decent multimedia player, have my screen reader talk through HDMI and TV
speakers while other sound plays through HiFi system.

I turned my dumb Grundig TV into a smart one xD. i could use something from iOS
family like old iPad or iPod touch for this purpose and I tried but it was not
so comfortable. I have to say I never learned to use iOS with a keyboard and I
have 14 years of experience with Jaws and later NVDA so this was also one of
the reasons I decided to get this PC instead of some iOS device. Before Minix I
tried Apple TV but I got very disapointed with its capabilities. I wanted to be
able to browse the web and read email but there's no such thing on Apple TV.

Maybe I should have go for Mac Mini instead of Windows desktop, the price was
more less the same, I don't know but I don't have the time to learn new system
and new screen reader and on the other hand Windows and Jaws are part of me for
more than twenty years.

So, the answer is I like my iPhone, as a matter of fact I can't live without it

Hi Sieghard,

I think I know why we have the discrepencies. I’m using the Honeywell Total
Comfort Connect app, not the Honeywell Home app. I didn’t realize there was
another app from Honeywell that would control the thermostats. I’ll check it
out. Thanks for your detailed descriptions.

the bottom of the screen and Voiceover jumps directly to the last item on the

My version is 4.2.0 (371)

As for the current indoor temperature, when I first open the app and I have the
menu button at the top left, I have an “Add new device” button as the last
element on that screen and again a 4-finger single tap in the bottom half of
the screen will take me there. Swiping back once to the left currently tells me
“21.5 ring above inside”. Note that the “ring above” is a symbol and visually
looks like the degrees symbol, but Voiceover in this instance speaks it as
“ring above”.
Here is a full description of the screen:

Top line underneath the status bar: Menu button on the left, name of your home
in the middle as a heading and “Weather Forecast” button at the top right
Underneath this: “My Thermostat” on the left, double tapping on that will open
a new screen”,, next in the middle “Temperature set to 16.0 degrees Celsius,
double tap to increase button” and on the right “Set temperature is 16.0
degrees Celsius”
Underneath that on the left: “21.5 ring above inside”, the current room
temperature measured by the thermostat and I think again underneath that (have
to ask somebody to actually describe it) is the Add new device button.

Looks like my app is up to date from the app store. I can’t find a version

Matching wiring colors is not a problem. I have sighted friends who can be

You will have to match wiring colors. You will also need sighted help to

Re: HoneyWell Smart Thermostats, was: Thermostat for Gas Heating

2018-08-02 Thread Todd W
Hi Sieghard,

I think I know why we have the discrepencies. I’m using the Honeywell
Total Comfort Connect app, not the Honeywell Home app. I didn’t realize
there was another app from Honeywell that would control the thermostats.
I’ll check it out. Thanks for your detailed descriptions.

re, the latest Alexa app update

2018-08-02 Thread Dave

I have noticed, that since the latest alexa update. every time i open the app,
it keeps asking me to turn on bluetooth.

I don’t know, if this is only with the UK update, as my friend in australia,
doesn’t seem to have this issue.

I don’t use alexa, with any bluetooth devices, and don’t wish to turn on
bluetooth for no reason.

does anyone no of any way i can stop the app asking me this, every time i open
it?

Dave.

Hi,
Does anyone have any information about how accessible the keybank mobile app is
with voiceover.
In looking through archived messages for this group, I saw a message that said
that the app had some accessibility issues, but don't know if these have been
solved or not.
Thank you.

Re: Any Updates on Accessible sprinkler timers?

2018-08-02 Thread Denny Schwab
The one-time watering screen works fine for me. As I said, the only
issue I found was the selection of zones when setting up a schedule.
Other than that I would put the application down as fully accessible.

Another item of note is that the developer has been very good at
accepting accessibility suggestions and is fairly willing to work at
making updates that are needed.

That's very helpful. In Bill Holton's review, he noted, "There's also a

inaccessible both on the iOS and the Android app." Have you encountered this
problem? I wonder if that problem might have been solved by the developer.

I use the Rachio app and find it very accessible. The only real issue
I have is that it does not tell you if something is selected or not,
for instance when you are trying to select which of the zones are
going to be watered on a given schedule. It is easy enough to work
around that though, since you can get the list of zones currently
selected when you have the schedule fully created, then just go in and
edit it by tapping on the zones you don't want included in that list.

Re: what to replace a couple devices with

2018-08-02 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Hi,

I know for me, getting totally rid of the desk top or laptop wouldn’t work.

I am a writer, and I just can’t imagine spending long hours trying to write a
document on the phone, even with a bluetooth keyboard connected. for one
thing, I haven’t yet found a bluetooth keyboard that I like the feel of and
that I can write at a reasonabley fast speed on. I also have a rather large
collection of files, and this collection is too large to just throw up into the
cloud. To my knowledge, there still is no way to connect a portable hard drive
to the phone or i pad and access files from it.

The idea of compactness and portability are attractive, but honestly, the
macbook air is all that, so I guess that’s as small as I’ll get for serious
computing.

I have an i phone 8 plus and love it, use it all the time, for calls and more,
just not for serious work.

Re: what to replace a couple devices with

2018-08-02 Thread Gordan Radić

Hi, there!

Some people already said some good things, Sieghard made some nice
points and here's my point of view.

First of all, I'm 42 year old and I started using PC when I was 20 in
1996. I got my first dumb cellphone at age of 23 in 1999.

I actually spent first half of my life using landline phone and some
overgrown calculators such as ZX Spectrum or Commodore 64. When I
started to use PC I used it for almost everything. Web browsing, email,
chat, VOIP telephony, writing and reading documents, whatching movies,
listening to music, whatever you can think of. There was a time when I
was using my PC as alarm clock xD.

I started to use smartphones as of 2004. or something and I got my first
iPhone on 2012. I have to say I use my iPhone to some level but if I
need to do some serious writting, some extended websearch, even for
reading 50 emails or more I'd rather sit in front of my desk and turn my
PC on. Maybe this is easier for sighted folks to acomplish on small
touch screen but I'm pretty much bounded if I can't use keyboard with
all ten fingers.

Now I have a decent multimedia player,
have my screen reader talk through HDMI and TV speakers while other
sound plays through HiFi system.

I turned my dumb Grundig TV into a smart one xD. i could use something
from iOS family like old iPad or iPod touch for this purpose and I tried
but it was not so comfortable. I have to say I never learned to use iOS
with a keyboard and I have 14 years of experience with Jaws and later
NVDA so this was also one of the reasons I decided to get this PC
instead of some iOS device. Before Minix I tried Apple TV but I got very
disapointed with its capabilities. I wanted to be able to browse the web
and read email but there's no such thing on Apple TV.

Maybe I should have go for Mac Mini instead of Windows desktop, the
price was more less the same, I don't know but I don't have the time to
learn new system and new screen reader and on the other hand Windows and
Jaws are part of me for more than twenty years.

I know this is an individual preference, but here is a question for
consideration. OK, OK, may be a couple questions. LOL.

I am interested in whether anyone only uses a mobile device and never a
computer, is that possible. I have a Mac Mini, but I never use it. if I decided
to trade in my Mac Mini, what would I replace it with? If another computer,
which Apple? If not, what device besides my phone should I consider; an Apple
watch or a trade-in on an iPad Air? To what? Most interested in a laptop if a
computer with a small screen. Thanks for any thoughts.

Re: what to replace a couple devices with

I still do my best work sat at a desk with a real keyboard which I use both
hands on. This is how I got into it, so a bit late to
change to one-handed.

I also have a huge collection of legacy files I want/need to keep, so this
almost eliminates iOs in the absence of a navigable file
system.

There are partial solutions to both of these, but not total solutions to the
level we had at the beginning.
