Plea for more descriptive subjects

2018-08-07 Thread Jeffrey Turner
I know this is really the job of the moderators, but I already asked Mark to
remind people about this, and he hasn’t.

It is so much more helpful to use more descriptive subjects on your posts than
something like “Question” or “My phone won’t” because those shorter subjects
don’t really give any idea of what your post is about. Remember that your post
goes into the permanent archive which is an important resource for this group,
and your message may not be found by people searching that archive unless the
subject is clear.

My apologies if I’ve overstepped, but my patience ran out.
Jeffrey

RE: Can't Activate Amazon Prime Audio Description in Canada

2018-08-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Barry,

I assume you mean "Bosch" as in the Harry Bosch series? I am in BC and don't
think I ever came across anything on Amazon Prime with audio description,
certainly it doesn't seem to be available for the Harry Bosch series.

I have an Amazon Prime Subscription here in Nova Scotia Canada. I cannot get
the Audio Description to work. I have contacted Amazon Support. They cannot
tell me whether or not it is available in Canada. I have followed the steps
correctly but do not see an option for turning on the Audio Description.

I have tried it on my iPhone 7, my Apple TV 4th generation and within the
Prime Video App on my Sony Smart TV — all with no success. I have tried it with
Boch which does have Audio Dscription.

Have any other Canadians tried it and succeeded?

Thanks.

2018-08-07 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I am cross-posting this to both the V iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing
list.

As of the latest Twitter for iOS app, v7.28.2, released July 24, 2018,
VoiceOver users cannot read long direct messages. If the DM goes beyond a
certain number of characters, speech stops. This was not the case in
previous versions of the app.

Please join me in reporting this issue.

The following is the review I posted in the App Store. You are welcome to
use any or all of it in your feedback to Twitter:

STEPS TO REPRODUCE:
1.
Make certain that VoiceOver is enabled.

2.
Select the Messages Tab located along the bottom row of the display.

3.
Attempt to read a direct message longer than 15 or so characters.

I am posting this review as a means of requesting that the Twitter
developers address this problem as soon as possible.

Thank you,

It is easy to find somebody's email simply by pressing Shift+Tab a few times

As you can see this "From" field contains the "on behalf of" followed by the

Only the Viphone email is given, if I wanted to reply directly to you I have no

Shift+F10 and select copy, this will copy only their email address to the

I’ve noticed a couple messages on this list commenting that, when someone
wants to reply directly to the sender of a specific e-mail message, they can’t
find that person’s address. Here’s a somewhat clumsy “work around."

First, reply to the message in question.

Then, locate the “Originator Line” and you should find that the e-mail address
of the person sending the message to which you wish to reply is listed. Copy
that direct e-mail address, go back to the “To” field - deleting the list
address and paste the sender’s address there instead.

NOTE: The above tip presumes a degree of proficiency with selecting, copying
and pasting text. If you are interested in using the tip but are uncomfortable
with text selection feel free to contact me directly at:

wfgal...@gmail.com

*No, the above address is not the one I’ve registered with on this list, but
that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me to
peruse!

Hi Hank,

Try the following:
Open the Control Center by touching the top of the screen / status bar, then
swiping up with 3 fingers. Now swipe to the right a few times, I believe
it's 4 times, to the Lock Rotation or Orientation button, & single finger
double tap it to toggle it on / off.

Landscape & Portrait screen displays explained below:

gmail nor iCloud.

I am replying to your email, just look at the header below, all it says is your

other addresses say something lik e “on behalf of” followed by th eposter’s

that direct e-mail address, go back to the “To” field - deleting the list

Can't Activate Amazon Prime Audio Description in Canada

2018-08-07 Thread Barry Abbott
I have an Amazon Prime Subscription here in Nova Scotia Canada. I cannot get
the Audio Description to work. I have contacted Amazon Support. They cannot
tell me whether or not it is available in Canada. I have followed the steps
correctly but do not see an option for turning on the Audio Description.

I have tried it on my iPhone 7, my Apple TV 4th generation and within the
Prime Video App on my Sony Smart TV — all with no success. I have tried it with
Boch which does have Audio Dscription.

Have any other Canadians tried it and succeeded?

Thanks.

Hi all,

I've just re-downloaded this app onto my phone.

Is there any way to take a virtual tour of my city from my home with this
app?

I see where I can have a third party app provide directions to a certain
place and can see intersections near by, but that's all I see.

Thanks for the help,

Kayla

A helpful person with the lists did some checking for me, and it seems that
the @group.io is blocked as several servers, like AOL, and my server said
that for the time being, it must be "black listed," since none of the mail
is showing on my web site emails. So, I hope time will solve the problem.

You have a log in that you use to manage your Google Groups. This log on
doesn't have to be the same email address you use to subscribe to a
particular group. One of the options in My Membership and Email Settings for
This List under My Settings is to specify the email address you use to send
and receive posts for the list. You could use a different email address for
every group if you wanted to.

Hi all. I decided that since my address doesn’t show up in the
membership list that I would try and rejoin and then try to go nomail
from there. Don’t know if I’d get double messages that way or if it will
correct the issue that I’m having. We shall see. It was just a thought
as when I’d go online logging in to the google groups web site under my
icloud account that I set up there it doesn’t show me subscribed to any
groups at all.

Anthony,

Do the following:
1. Touch the app you want to remove or swipe to it 2. Swipe up or down with one
finger, Voiceover will say "Edit Mode" and then double tap, Voiceover will say
"Started Editing"
3. Now swipe down again with one finger, Voiceover will say "Delete", double
tap, Voiceover will say "Delete" followed by the app name.
4. Swipe right, Voiceover will say "Deleting this app will also delete its
data", then swipe right again and you hear "Cancel", swipe right one more time
to "Delete", double tap to confirm and the app will now be deleted.

not much to explain, it’s a simple little app which uses the GPS receiver in
your phone to display your elevation/altitude above sea level, it will also
display the coordinates of your current location and, if you are walking or
driving, it will display your current speed.

If you want just information as to where you are, upcoming streets and so on
you can use Blindsquare
  which costs
$39.99 UUS.

You can also use Apple Maps which is on your phone already and it’s called
“Maps” or you can download Google Maps

which is also accessible, both of them are free to use.

If you want a dedicated GPS app for the blind which also lets you put in an
address/location you have the following two options:

Nearby Explorer for $79.99

Seeing Eye GPS XT for $199.99

Seeing Eye GPS – subscription model, $9.99 for 30-day use or $69.99 for 1-year
use

Sieghard

Hi Don,

I had a look and found the following two apps:

GPS Data XXL

Price: Free, offers $0.99 in-app purchase to remove ads

However, I downloaded this app since it was free and while it displays
elevation, speed and coordinates in a nice way which Voiceover reads well I
don’t see anything about number of satellites and strength even though the
description mentions this, I have to get one o fmy sighted employees to take a
look tomorrow to see if the information is there but not accessible to
Voiceover.

I might keep this app, though, I can ask SIRI about my elevation and such, but
I think this one works without data and it’s nice to have access to this in an
uncluttered format and speed is also nice when you are in a car or train, have
to try it next time I fly to see if it works on the plane, often these apps
don’t work at very high altitudes and speeds.

Here is another one which costs a few bucks, but I didn’t buy it, it gets good
ratings, though, just not sure about accessibility:

GPS Diagnostic: Satellite Test

Price: $2.99, offers $1.99 in-app purchase for “Coordinates-Pro” whatever
exactly that is.

Sieghard

Hi Listers,

I am looking for an app that will report the number of sattlelites in view at
any particular time or location.

I had one called status tool which was great, giving number of sattlelites,
their signal strengths etc.

That app was never updated so it won't run on IOS 11.

I have downloaded apps such as gps, gps status, gps tools, etc. and none of
them do this.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Maybe I am wasting my time, not sure.

Hi Bill,

It is easy to find somebody's email simply by pressing Shift+Tab a few times
when the message is open until you get to the "From" field. I did this in your
message and after pressing Control+A and then Control+C, here is what I get if
I paste the content of the clipboard:

'Bill Gallik' via VIPhone Yours is another example
where your email is not part of that address, here is an example from a message
Donna posted:
viphone@googlegroups.com; on behalf of; Donna

As you can see this "From" field contains the "on behalf of" followed by the
person's email address. I don't know what those of you where the address
doesn't show up do differently, but even if you reply to the email the address
is simply not there, here is the header when I press Control+R to reply to your

Only the Viphone email is given, if I wanted to reply directly to you I have no
way of doing so whereas with Donna's and most other posts I can just go into
the From field, put the Jaws cursor on their email, right click or press

*No, the above address is not the one I’ve registered with on this list, but
that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me to
peruse!

Is the voice on that TV the same as the one on the Roku stick? We have one of
those, and I actually found a voice almost not understandable. I’ve been using
speech synthesizers for a long time, all the way back to dos. So it’s a great
mystery to me why these folks who make these TV boxes accessible can’t find a
way to give us a voice that’s really clear. Amazon wins hands-down in my
opinion in that regard. Just like with the Roku TV, switching ports is totally
accessible on the Amazon one, and you can also named him whatever you want,
which I didn’t bother doing. You also have voice control of the TV, including
turning it off and on, switching ports, launching movies or apps whatever. The
Amazon TV is more expensive than that Roku. So if you’re satisfied with the
voice, it sounds like it could be a good way to go. I just couldn’t get past
the voice if it’s the same as the one on stick that we have.

RE: going through the process of unlocking a phone

2018-08-07 Thread Zhi Huang
Hi Sieghard:

After reading the article and calling, and talking to Comcast and Verizon, I
know it should work, but truth is, I just have to ask, is it worth all the
trouble, and would it even accomplish the task in the end. To top things off,
Comcast currently has a deal until September 30 where you can get an iPhone8
256GB for $700, the same price for the iPhone8 64GB model. Since my wife's
iPhone 6 is dying quickly and she has to travel soon, we thought about this.
However, when we get there we get this stuff about limited supply and how they
only have the 64GB for $700. The guy then has the nerve to ask, DO you need
all that storage? I told him, since the 256 model is $150 off, do you need
$150?
Truth is Comcast has the best deal. $12 per GB of Data and $2 per line for
unlimited talk and text for Internet subscribers. My wife and I only use 1 to
2 GB between us so monthly bill would be $16 for 1 GB to $40 even if we used 3
GB. Problem is, it's not worth all the trouble if it probably won't happen
anyway.

Seems like you didn't read the article Zhi provided the link for, the person
who wrote it said he already had a line with them and put in the SIM into the
unlocked iPhone 5S he wanted to add and it worked, but still at the store they
told him they couldn't do it. Maybe at a different store it would be different,
but there are probably other good deals out there and my attitude here would be
that if they don't want my business and monthly payment possibly for years to
come then I go elsewhere and I would possibly go further and remove any other
services from them if I had any.

Hello,

One solution to this would be to get a friend or family member's comcast sim,
put it in your AT iPhone, go back to the comcast store and show them very
directly that it indeed does work absolutely fine?

I don't know what those of you where the address
doesn't show up do differently, but even if you reply to the email the address
is simply not there, here is the header when I press Control+R to reply to your
email:

Only the Viphone email is given, if I wanted to reply directly to you I have no
way of doing so whereas with Donna's and most other posts I can just go into
the From field, put the Jaws cursor on their email, right click or press
Shift+F10 and select copy, this will copy only their email address to the
clipboard not the entire line which I pasted above and selected with Control+A.

*No, the above address is not the one I’ve registered with on this list, but
that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me to
peruse!

RE: App waonted that provides gps sattlelite info:

2018-08-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
not much to explain, it’s a simple little app which uses the GPS receiver in
your phone to display your elevation/altitude above sea level, it will also
display the coordinates of your current location and, if you are walking or
driving, it will display your current speed.

If you want just information as to where you are, upcoming streets and so on
you can use
Blindsquare which
costs $39.99 UUS.
You can also use Apple Maps which is on your phone already and it’s called
“Maps” or you can download Google
Maps
which is also accessible, both of them are free to use.
If you want a dedicated GPS app for the blind which also lets you put in an
address/location you have the following two options:
Nearby Explorer for
$79.99
Seeing Eye GPS XT for
$199.99
Seeing Eye GPS – subscription model, $9.99 for 30-day use or $69.99 for 1-year
use

GPS Diagnostic: Satellite
Test
Price: $2.99, offers $1.99 in-app purchase for “Coordinates-Pro” whatever
exactly that is.

I don't know what those of you where the address
doesn't show up do differently, but even if you reply to the email the address
is simply not there, here is the header when I press Control+R to reply to your

*No, the above address is not the one I’ve registered with on this list, but
that address gets much less traffic and will be much more convenient for me to
peruse!

RE: going through the process of unlocking a phone

2018-08-07 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Seems like you didn't read the article Zhi provided the link for, the person
who wrote it said he already had a line with them and put in the SIM into the
unlocked iPhone 5S he wanted to add and it worked, but still at the store they
told him they couldn't do it. Maybe at a different store it would be different,
but there are probably other good deals out there and my attitude here would be
that if they don't want my business and monthly payment possibly for years to
come then I go elsewhere and I wold possibly go further and remove any other
services from them if I had any.

Hello,

One solution to this would be to get a friend or family member's
comcast sim, put it in your AT iPhone, go back to the comcast store
and show them very directly that it indeed does work absolutely
fine?

speech synthesizers for a long time, all the way back to dos.

It has a composit or component port (I can’t keep the two straight). I like the
set-up very much.

I have an Apple TV and i want to pair it with an accessible TV. If you have one
and are extremely pleased with it I would like to know about it so I can get
one too.

Can’t read an entire DM on Twitter

2018-08-07 Thread Kathy Brandt
If someone has written a direct message beyond a certain point, it cuts off. I
can only read the whole thing if I switch the rotor to word and flick through.
Has anyone else noticed this?

Re: going through the process of unlocking a phone

2018-08-07 Thread James English
Hello,

One solution to this would be to get a friend or family member's
comcast sim, put it in your AT iPhone, go back to the comcast store
and show them very directly that it indeed does work absolutely
fine?
