Re: Clearing notifications from multiple devices at the same time

2018-11-27 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
I think the only way to do this would be to disable notifications for
individual apps on your second device. As far as I am aware the means to do
that which you wish doesn’t yet exist.
You could go to
https://www.apple.com/feedback/
and suggest it as a future feature under efficiency or productivity for your
given device though.
Take good care.

Hi Todd,
I get certain notifications on my active iPhone, and on my old iPhone which is
now acting like an iPod. For instance, Amazon sends me notifications. And there
are a couple of other apps that I have set to give me notifications. There are
certain apps that only give me notifications on one device. And of course I
expect to have to delete those. But if I get the same notification on both
devices from a given app, such as Amazon, I would like to be able to blast at
once and not have to do it again on the other device.

2018-11-27 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
HI Mike,

I’ve got over 300 contacts and Siri is too finicky to rely on to interpret my
requests in all sorts of scenarios. It’s happened where I wanted to call/text
mom and next this I know, I’m talking to Ron. Call/text Magdalena (or Nena) and
I end up having to apologize that I interrupted Elena or whoever. This is why
to avoid any awkward situations or explanations of how that last text wasn’t
really meant for X, but rather a relative, I just tell Siri to call/text my
sister. Call/text my mother, etc.

I don’t need to be reaching out to any of my subvendors at 8:00 AM on a Sunday
by accident.

Hi Cristóbal,

Why don't you put your sister's name into the pronunciation dictionary? I do
that for my hispanic family members names to make sure they're pronounced
correctly.

You're list of word choices that you've made mistakes with still has me

Take care. Go Rams!

All this as well as if English is your second language.
My wife hates Siri and gave up on using it and dictation but for the most basic
of text. German's her first language and while she's completely fluent in
English, she still has an accent. She's self-conscious of it and while I'm
probably bias, I don't think it's that pronounced. She does have what I might
consider a general "European" accent, but it's not like I live with the
governater or Boris and Natasha either. And even if I did, so what. You figure
dictation would be better at these sort of real world variables by now.
My German's not good enough to where it would make sense to be swapping texts
back and forth in German (although, it would probably help me to pick up more
stuff), so all our techy communication is in English.
Also the hassle if you're dealing with foreign sounding names. I have to say
"my sister" instead of Magdalena since 9 times out of 10, it'll get messed up.
Thank God I don't ever have to dictate my name. Lopez, Hernandez, Ramos is fine
if you gringo-fy the pronunciation, but good luck if you have to refer to
Horacio Vialpando Monreal for example...
I've sent mistakes of boobs instead of boots. Fuck you instead of thank you.
I'm shitting instead of I'm sitting...
Spell checking can be so tiresome for every little text though. I’m sure I've
let a bunch of their instead of they're, cite sight and site where/wear go
through too. Wouldn't be surprised if some people think I'm illiterate by now.
Ah technology...

I had a real good chuckle at the dictation mention and how better it is to talk
than type at times.
Of course this would be true if SIRI wasn't so stupid and make so many mistakes.
I dictate a lot, but I have made it a rule never or at least extremely rarely
will I send a message without going over it word by word because sometimes
especially with a bit of background noise just hearing it read back can sound
like it's OK when it is not.
I find especially often I will say "a" or "him" or "them" and SIRI puts "the"
instead of "a", "them" instead of "him" and so on.
A couple of weeks ago I send a message to my Mom where I was talking about my
niece who wants to get a backpack for Christmas. As some of you know I own a
retail business and sell outdoor and hunting gear and backpacks are definitely
an item we have lots of. Anyways, I dictated the message but instead of
"backpack" SIRI wrote "fuck fuck", sorry for the bad word, but I am not kidding
and I sent the message and didn't catch it because I was doing this as I was
walking with traffic noise and it honestly sounded correct. My Mom did realize
what happened so it wasn't the end of the world, but sometimes what SIRI comes
up with can be potentially extremely embarrassing and at times I really scratch
my head. Another one is my guide dog's name which is Radar, SIRI never gets
that right, it either puts "reader" or "raider"

Secret iPhone & iPad Typing Tips: Trackpad Mode and more!
By Rene Ritchie, 24 Nov 2018
Tap. Shake. Press. Whether you're using an iPhone on the go or an iPad Pro to
get your very real work… or play… done, the more efficient you can be, the
better. Including typing. Especially typing.
Following the launch of the latest iPad Pro, even basic typing tricks like
trackpad mode and cursor movement spread through social with viral shock and
delight. Years old, many people still simply didn't know.
Well, let's fix that now.
I usually try to do these things in order, but this one got so much attention
lately I'm going to front load so you get it first. If you're using the virtual
keyboard you can quickly switch it to a virtual trackpad, which makes precisely
placing the cursor for precision edits much, much easier.
1. Touch and hold the Space Bar.
2. Swipe your finger over the trackpad to move the cursor.
On a 3D Touch iPhone, you can also press firmly to switch to trackpad mode, and
press again to switch between moving the cursor and text selection.
On an iPad, you can just use two fingers directly on the text to move the
cursor, and double tap to switch to text selection.
It's so good it kinda makes you wish external keyboards had a way to support
it. And on more than just

There are a lot of settings you can toggle for the keyboard, including
auto-caps, auto-corrections, spell-check, caps lock, predictions, and more.
1. Launch Settings.
2. Tap on General.
3. Tap on Keyboard.
4. Toggle until you're happy.
For most people, most of the time, the defaults are not only fine. But, if
they're not for you, at least not right now, fix them up just the way you like
them before we go on.
Speed caps (and numbers and symbols)

If you only want to enter one number or symbol, don't tap Number or Symbol
button — there's a faster way!
1. Touch the number or symbol button and keep your finger on it.

There are a lot of settings you can toggle for the keyboard, including

All this as well as if English is your second language.
My wife hates Siri and gave up on using it and dictation but for the most
basic of text. German's her first language and while she's completely fluent
in English, she still has an accent. She's self-conscious of it and while
I'm probably bias, I don't think it's that pronounced. She does have what I
might consider a general "European" accent, but it's not like I live with
the governater or Boris and Natasha either. And even if I did, so what. You
figure dictation would be better at these sort of real world variables by
now.
My German's not good enough to where it would make sense to be swapping
texts back and forth in German (although, it would probably help me to pick
up more stuff), so all our techy communication is in English.
Also the hassle if you're dealing with foreign sounding names. I have to say
"my sister" instead of Magdalena since 9 times out of 10, it'll get messed
up. Thank God I don't ever have to dictate my name. Lopez, Hernandez, Ramos
is fine if you gringo-fy the pronunciation, but good luck if you have to
refer to Horacio Vialpando Monreal for example...
I've sent mistakes of boobs instead of boots. Fuck you instead of thank
you. I'm shitting instead of I'm sitting...
Spell checking can be so tiresome for every little text though. I’m sure
I've let a bunch of their instead of they're, cite sight and site where/wear
go through too. Wouldn't be surprised if some people think I'm illiterate by
now.
Ah technology...

I had a real good chuckle at the dictation mention and how better it is to
talk than type at times.
Of course this would be true if SIRI wasn't so stupid and make so many
mistakes.
I dictate a lot, but I have made it a rule never or at least extremely
rarely will I send a message without going over it word by word because
sometimes especially with a bit of background noise just hearing it read
back can sound like it's OK when it is not.
I find especially often I will say "a" or "him" or "them" and SIRI puts
"the" instead of "a", "them" instead of "him" and so on.
A couple of weeks ago I send a message to my Mom where I was talking about
my niece who wants to get a backpack for Christmas. As some of you know I
own a retail business and sell outdoor and hunting gear and backpacks are
definitely an item we have lots of. Anyways, I dictated the message but
instead of "backpack" SIRI wrote "fuck fuck", sorry for the bad word, but I
am not kidding and I sent the message and didn't catch it because I was
doing this as I was walking with traffic noise and it honestly sounded
correct. My Mom did realize what happened so it wasn't the end of the world,
but sometimes what SIRI comes up with can be potentially extremely
embarrassing and at times I really scratch my head. Another one is my guide
dog's name which is Radar, SIRI never gets that right, it either puts
"reader" or "raider" or "rider"

Hi

1. Open the app store app.

2. Tap on Today.

3. Tap on My Account at the top. 4. Swipe down to Redeem Gift card or Code.

5. Remove the strip from the back of the gift card.

Hi List,

I purchased one of those iTunes gift cards from Amazon over the Black Friday
weekend to get the 20% discount. I know I've seen many posts here in the past
about scanning an iTunes gift card to one's account but I can't for the life of

Thanks in advance.

My Mom did realize
what happened so it wasn't the end of the world, but sometimes what SIRI comes
up with can be potentially extremely embarrassing and at times I really scratch
my head. Another one is my guide dog's name which is Radar, SIRI never gets
that right, it either puts "reader" or "raider" or "rider"

Hi Mary,

What kind of notification? My messages and calendar notifications seem to
all clear when I dismiss them from one device.

2. Slide your finger up to the number or symbol you want to enter.
3. Let go!
Once you're done, the keyboard will instantly switch back to text more. The

When you want to SHOUT AT SOMEONE WHO IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET you don't need

3. Tap shift again to go back to lower case.
YOU'RE WELCOME.
Special characters

Typing the letter 'e' is easy as tapping it. Typing 'èéêëēėę' is almost as easy.
1. Touch and hold down on the letter to get a popup with alternate
characters.
2. Slide over to the alternate character you want enter.
3. Let go.

If you have an external keyboard connected to your iPad, you get all sorts of
useful keyboard shortcuts along with it.
That includes classics like command C command C to copy and Command V to paste,

Changing the Siri voice on my stereo pairedHomePods

2018-11-27 Thread Mary Otten

Sent from my iPhone I got the HomePod from Best Buy, and I have to say I am
very impressed with the sound of a pair of them for $500. They are very close
to the sound of speakers I have that I paid a lot more for several years ago,
which is what I was hoping. I first set up one HomePod, and I did see that
there was the availability for changing the Siri voice, as well as the voice
over speed. Now that I have a pair, I don’t see that anymore. You’re supposed
to do 3D Touch or long press on the HomePod in your Home app. Then you’re
supposed to go down to the bottom and see details. And when you’re in there,
you’re supposed to see the ability to change the Siri voice. The problem is
that now but it’s a pear, I don’t get any ability to long press and hold and
get any sort of screen with details. I wonder if you can only change the Siri
voice when the pods are not paired. That seems strange.

app, or area of the system, you're in.
Shake to undo (iPhone only)

If you type some text, delete some text, or even paste some text and later
regret, you can undo it.
1. Shake your iPhone.
2. Tap Undo (or Redo).
Yeah… it's… weird. But it works. What works even better is a dedicated Undo
key, which only the Plus size — but strangely not the Max size — iPhones have
and only in landscape.
It'd be great to see that everywhere.
One handed mode
If you're a walk and typer with your iPhone, coffee in one hand, texting in the
other, or if you just prefer typing one handed, you can offset the keyboard
right or left to make it easier.
1. Tap and hold the Globe button.
2. Tap the left or right biased keyboard button.
Type away, and when and if you want to go back, just hit the big arrow on the
other side.
Split Keyboard
On smaller iPads, basically 10.5 and under, you can undock and move the
keyboard, and split it left and right for easier thumb typing.
1. Touch and hold the keyboard button, bottom right.
2. Tap Undock to release or Split to separate.
You can redock and merge at any point by doing the same thing. And, yeah, Apple
seems to think the new 11-inch and all 12.9 inch iPads are too big for this
feature, but almost anyone who knows about it and tries it just thinks it's
broken and that might not be the better solution.
Dictation

As improved as the iPhone and iPad keyboards are, sometimes it's still easier
to talk than type. Dictation has gotten better over the years, including
streaming transcriptions, and offline speech-to-text. Just…
1. Tap the mic button

How to quickly connect AirPods to Apple TV, Cult of Mac

How to use AirPods with Apple TV
By Charlie Sorrel, 1:00 pm, November 26, 2018

You kids don't know how good you have it.
Are you a late-night movie watcher with sensitive neighbors? Do you hate
watching your Apple TV with the volume set too low? Then you might love
today's tip. Did you know that you can use your AirPods with your Apple TV?
Sure you did. But did you also know that you don't need to dig around in
your Apple TV's menus to hook them up? There's a Siri Remote shortcut that
makes switching ultra-convenient.
How to quick switch audio outputs on Apple TV
Press and hold, and you're in.
Here's the tip, by way of Wolfboyz on Reddit: Apple TV has a shortcut to
switch audio output devices. Just press and hold the Play/Pause button on
the Apple TV remote when viewing the Home Screen, and you'll see a panel
listing all available AirPlay speakers. Even though AirPods use Bluetooth
and not Wi-Fi, they still show up here thanks to the magic of Apple's
integration.
Use Siri
Another way to quickly switch audio outputs is to use Siri. Invoke Siri and
say "Audio settings." This will open up the Audio Output screen, and you can
use the remote to quickly pick your output. This version only appears to
open up your most-recently-used audio settings panel, so you may find
yourself deep in the Settings app, instead of on the Audio Output panel. But
if you recently switched speaker/headphone outputs, then this is almost as
quick.
AirPods and HomePod
These tricks work thanks to the fact that AirPods are tied to your Apple ID,
so if you're signed in on an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, they're already
paired.
And if you're using a HomePod, you can use this same trick to pop up the
audio output settings, and choose the HomePod instead, just like you can
from an iPhone or iPad.
It's a shame that Apple doesn't make these great tricks and shortcuts more
obvious. Then again, I guess it's my job to dig them up and pass them on.

podcast app question

Hi,
When you listen to podcasts in the podcast app on the i phone, will episodes
just delete themselves after you’ve listened to them?

Also, is there a way to download all the eps of a podcast at once, rather then
one by one?

Thanks!

Clearing notifications from multiple devices at the same time

2018-11-27 Thread Mary Otten
I wonder if there is a setting somewhere that I am missing which would enable
me to clear a notification from one device, and having done so, not see that
notification on any other devices. It’s kind of annoying to have to make
duplicate notification clear out. And since everything syncs in the cloud, I’m
wondering why this is not possible. So I hope I’m just missing a Settings
somewhere.

RE: Auto brightness problem

Hello,

This issue is definitely a software glitch.

In my case, all last week, each time I restarted my 8 Plus, regardless of the
brightness level, the screen would reset to zero.

For whatever reason, this week, at least, it reboots with the same brightness
level, 50% at which it was at the time of shutdown.

Hi Cathy. Every time I restart my iPHONE7, my brightness is set to 100%. I
always have to set the brightness to 0% and can't find a way to prevent it
changing when I reboot. I think this might be an intentional change to make
certain that sighted people can always see their devices when they restart
them. I could easily be wrong about this though.

RE: Does Anyone own both a Sonos One and a Play:1 Speaker - Question About Airplay

2018-11-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Yes, Sonos One and Play 5 for now, actually, I think also on the new Beam
SoundBar and possible on the PlayBase as well. The new Sonos Amp also has it.
It is available through installers now and will be available for normal
purchase in February.

Is AirPlay on Sonos only on Play 1 and Play 5? This has been my understanding.
I have 4 Play 3's, and not really a place I'd want a Play1. I could use a
standalone Play 3 in a little used room, though, where I would put one of my
current Play 3's.

Thanks, Keith

Hi Chuck,

I think you have to group them. The Sonos One will receive the stream from your
iPhone via Airplay and of course anything you group with it will also play it,
but if you take the Sonos One out of the group I don't see how the Play 1 can
receive the stream. I have two stereo sets of Sonos 1 speakers and our Apple TV
fourth generation, if I go to Airplay in Audible I see only Bathroom, Kitchen
and Apple TV and bathroom and kitchen are where my Sonos One speakers are.
However, if it is Audible you want to play you could play it on any Sonos
device via the Connect to a device button which is somewhere in the middle of
the screen, in terms of swiping it is one swipe to the right from the book
title image and one swipe to the left of the Jump back button.
You may need to have Audible set up in your Sonos app as a source and you can
of course also access any of your books directly via the Sonos app and bypass
the Audible app completely.

Sieghard

I hope this makes sense.

RE: Laundry app accessibility

2018-11-27 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill,

I gave up on this about a year and a half ago although I am not saying things
haven't changed by now. I was also hoping we would see a lot more of these
washers and dryers who can be controlled with an app, you can do it with
thermostats, the Instant Pot, Lights and so many other devices that one would
think the technology is there and it would just be a matter for a company to
decide if they want to use a direct WiFi connection or the zWave standard. But
as I said, when I was ready to buy I found nothing I liked and I bought a Miele
washer and dryer which don't have an app, but I can operate them since they
have actual buttons and while some of these buttons display options on an LCD
screen I can either write down the order or use my iPhone and an app like
Seeing AI to read the screen. The nice thing is that if the machine I bought it
switched off it always starts at the same option, e.g. there is a button for
Master CAre which is a program and then you press another button to cycle
through about 6 or 8 options like Towels, Outer Wear, Denim and Jeans etc. When
you first turn the machine on and press Mastercare it always starts at Towels
so if Denim and Jeans is the third option I know I have to press the button
twice to get there.
I know this may not be a good solution for everybody and this was a very
expensive washer and dryer set when compared to many of the usual brands here
like Samsung, LG, Maytag etc., but I have very specific expectations and would
never ever buy a Samsung washer/dryer and probably not most other Asian brands,
either. I find the German designs and in the case of this Miele set,
German-made appliances better in terms of built quality and washing quality. I
am pretty sure there are very good others out there and probably even some of
the Korean or Chinese ones, but that is just me, I bought a high-end Bosch
dishwasher and expect this Miele washer and dryer set will be with me for at
least 20 or 25 years. Our next big purchase is a range and here I am looking at
one with an induction cooktop and a good oven, unfortunately our house isn't
big enough to have a separate cooktop and wall oven, but Bosch also has some
very nice ones and while I'd love to buy a Miele here also those are beyond my
price range since you are easily looking at $10,000 Canadian for one of those,
the ones from Bosch are around $4,000 Canadian.
I'd love to hear if others actually have purchased a connected washer and dryer
and, if you decide on one, please share your experience.

Take care,
Sieghard

Hi all,
I was just listening to David would bridges podcast where he set up his
HomePod. And of course he was in the home app. I have an iPhone 7 Plus which is
no longer acting as a phone, since it doesn’t have a Sim card in it, although
it will do Wi-Fi calling as long as it’s on the Wi-Fi network where my real
iPhone is. I got the impression as David did his set up that you might only be
able to control the HomePod from a given device. So I’m just wondering if I
have to be careful which device I set my homePod up with. That is, if I were to
use my iPhone xr to set up the phone, can I then use my iPhone 7 Plus to do
airplay, say of an audiobook from audible or whatever. Or can I only airplane
from the device on which the set up was initially done? I hope that makes sense.
Mary

I manage five different calendars and for convenience, I use the native app,

I deal with upwards of 200 different calendar entries in any given month. Be it
for business or personal, etc. I find it easier to have them seperated by app
instead of havign them all in one and enabling/disabling or by flag or color to
sort through.

Do you have access to a computer and have you tried to go to

See if you can login with your new Apple Id and password.
As for the old one, what email did you use and to you still have access to that
email?
If so you should be able to go to Forgot Password and get a password reset link
emailed to the old email address.
I assume you now use janet.harv...@outlook.com as your Apple Id? What email did

HI Donna,
I’ve tried several times to enter my password, but the phone is not accepting
it, that is my problem. I don’t have any other restrictions either. This is
not just to update an app, this is to update my Apple id settings, in which I
can’t do, so as a result, I will not have access to certain account settings
until I can get this issue rectified. I have never selected any secret
questions either. I’m just thinking when I changed my password a few years
ago, I probably should have updated certain Apple settings, but I didn’t know
at the time I needed to do that.

Janet,

Try entering the password that you use to unlock your iPhone. When installing
IOS updates the iPhone will restart once the update is complete. If you have a
passcode set for restrictions it may be requesting that passcode be entered. My
guess is it wants your unlock password though. If you have forgotten the
password to your first iTunes username; when logged out of all iTunes accounts,
enter the old iTunes user email & swipe to I Forgot. You should have had to
setup secret questions when originally setting up the old iTunes account. You
will be given 2 of the questions, just type in their answer. If the questions
are answered correctly, you will be prompted to enter a new password &
confirm the new password.

Donna

Hi,
Ok, I signed out, and I signed back in, and that was successful. I’m still
getting the exact same message though. Telling me I need to update my Apple
settings, in which I still get the same message saying wrong password, and then
I get a message saying to enter my Apple id, or I will not be able to use some
services until I update my Apple id settings. I get only one edit field, and
even though, I tried entering my Apple id as well as my password, it still says
wrong password. Any other suggestions? I don’t want to merge my old and new
Apple ID though,

Thank you all.

Signed out of both iTunes and iCloud on your iPhone. Then try to sign back in
again. Another option is to clear you’re cache. The last suggestion would be
to call Apple accessibility. Unfortunately, there is no way to merge you’re old
and new Apple ID. Concerning iTunes, you should just be able to sign out on the
PC. If not, ensure your library is backed up, uninstall then reinstall iTunes.

Make sure you go into settings, messages and have both SMS and MMS turned on as

Hi all. Just wondering if anyone is still having issues with the “message
sent failure” bug when using siri to send a text message. It generally occurs
when I’m texting someone who has an Android Phone. I have an IPhone 7 running
the latest IOS version. I’ve called Apple Care and done a re-set network
settings. The problem still exists. Any thoughts. I can live with it, but
I’d rather find a solution.

  God bless!

Re: Auto brightness problem

2018-11-27 Thread Michael Feir

On my 5S: I have it off in display accommodations, yet when I turned the phone
on, it automatically goes to 71%! It will stay at zero when I turn it down
either in settings or the control center, but the next time I boot the phone it
goes back up to 71%; how can I make it stay at 0 if that’s what I want?
