How to sign up for iTunes match if you are running a Windows PC

2018-11-28 Thread Mary Otten
I am asking this question for a friend. I have been signed up with iTunes match
for several years, so I have no idea how to help him. He does not have a mask.
He does have a Windows PC, and he does have a bunch of stuff in iTunes. He was
trying to sign up for iTunes match and was not successful. So the question: how
to sign up for iTunes match if you are running a Windows PC?

Re: Secret iPhone & iPad Typing Tips: Trackpad Mode and more!, iMore

2018-11-28 Thread Tom Lange
I always caution my students that they need to be careful when texting or
e-mailing with Siri or just using dictation. Relying on predictive text can be
problematic, too. Earlier this year when the flu epidemic was especially severe
in the Carolinas and was widely publicized on TV news and in the papers, my
sister sent me a very well-meaning but hilarious text message in which she
talked about the epidemic and urged me to get a fly shit as soon as possible. I
caught the message just as I was settling into a paratransit vehicle and I just
cracked up, especially since my sister is usually very meticulous and precise.
I have no clue how that one slipped past her, but it did, which made it that
much funnier. Go figure.

2018-11-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
It did work for me, you have to touch the More Numbers and lightly hold for
about 3 seconds, then you hear the little TriTone and if you then drag your
finger up you get the numbers and symbols, touch a number and let go and it
types that number and the letters keyboard is back. This is not too bad for
typing a single number.

Secret iPhone & iPad Typing Tips: Trackpad Mode and more!
By Rene Ritchie, 24 Nov 2018
Tap. Shake. Press. Whether you're using an iPhone on the go or an iPad Pro to
get your very real work… or play… done, the more efficient you can be, the
better. Including typing. Especially typing.
Following the launch of the latest iPad Pro, even basic typing tricks like
trackpad mode and cursor movement spread through social with viral shock and
delight. Years old, many people still simply didn't know.
Well, let's fix that now.
I usually try to do these things in order, but this one got so much attention
lately I'm going to front load so you get it first. If you're using the virtual
keyboard you can quickly switch it to a virtual trackpad, which makes precisely
placing the cursor for precision edits much, much easier.
1. Touch and hold the Space Bar.
2. Swipe your finger over the trackpad to move the cursor.
On a 3D Touch iPhone, you can also press firmly to switch to trackpad mode, and
press again to switch between moving the cursor and text selection.
On an iPad, you can just use two fingers directly on the text to move the
cursor, and double tap to switch to text selection.
It's so good it kinda makes you wish external keyboards had a way to support
it. And on more than just

There are a lot of settings you can toggle for the keyboard, including
auto-caps, auto-corrections, spell-check, caps lock, predictions, and more.
1. Launch Settings.
2. Tap on General.
3. Tap on Keyboard.
4. Toggle until you're happy.
For most people, most of the time, the defaults are not only fine. But, if
they're not for you, at least not right now, fix them up just the way you like
them before we go on.
Speed caps (and numbers and symbols)

If you only want to enter one number or symbol, don't tap Number or Symbol
button — there's a faster way!
1. Touch the number or symbol button and keep your finger on it.
2. Slide your finger up to the number or symbol you want to enter.
3. Let go!
Once you're done, the keyboard will instantly switch back to text more. The
same works for shift when you want to enter uppercase letters!
CAPS LOCK

When you want to SHOUT AT SOMEONE WHO IS WRONG ON THE INTERNET you don't need
to hit the Shift button for each letter.
1. Tap the shift quick twice in a row.
2. Type your TEXT.
3. Tap shift again to go back to lower case.
YOU'RE WELCOME.
Special characters

Typing the letter 'e' is easy as tapping it. Typing 'èéêëēėę' is almost as easy.
1. Touch and hold down on the letter to get a popup with alternate
characters.
2. Slide over to the alternate character you want enter.
3. Let go.
On 3D Touch iPhones, you even get this really cool Taptic feedback for each
character… which kinda feels like it should be an option, like keyboard sound,
for every key by now.
Keyboard shortcuts
If you have an external keyboard connected to your iPad, you get all sorts of
useful keyboard shortcuts along with it.
That includes classics like command C command C to copy and Command V to paste,
even command Tab to switch between recent apps, and command space for
Spotlight. But you also get some special ones, like command H to return to the
Home screen.
Just hold down the command key to bring up a list of useful commands for any
app, or area of the system, you're in.
Shake to undo (iPhone only)

If you type some text, delete some text, or even paste some text and later
regret, you can undo it.
1. Shake your iPhone.
2. Tap Undo (or Redo).
Yeah… it's… weird. But it works. What works even better is a dedicated Undo
key, which only the Plus size — but strangely not the Max size — iPhones have
and only in landscape.
It'd be great to s

2018-11-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I'd believe that it was my rather slight accent, but it's not like many native
speakers weren't finding the same inaccuracy with SIRI dictation.
It sometimes gets things wrong where I really can only shake my head. For
example, I dictated a message the other day where I said something like "You
can bring this package to Canada Post when you have time" and SIRI put "You can
take this package to Canada Post Smithers when you have time".
I have "Canada Post Smithers" as a contact for calling my local post office and
I have seen this before where you say something and it inserts one of your
contact names, I mean I clearly said "Canada Post" and in no way said the word
"Smithers".
Another one went like this, I spoke a number, can't exactly recall the context,
but instead of 122 SIRI actually wrote "one22", I mean what's with this, this
is not even a word and it didn't even put a space between the word "one" and
the "22".

All this as well as if English is your second language.
My wife hates Siri and gave up on using it and dictation but for the most basic
of text. German's her first language and while she's completely fluent in
English, she still has an accent. She's self-conscious of it and while I'm
probably bias, I don't think it's that pronounced. She does have what I might
consider a general "European" accent, but it's not like I live with the
governater or Boris and Natasha either. And even if I did, so what. You figure
dictation would be better at these sort of real world variables by now.
My German's not good enough to where it would make sense to be swapping texts
back and forth in German (although, it would probably help me to pick up more
stuff), so all our techy communication is in English.
Also the hassle if you're dealing with foreign sounding names. I have to say
"my sister" instead of Magdalena since 9 times out of 10, it'll get messed up.
Thank God I don't ever have to dictate my name. Lopez, Hernandez, Ramos is fine
if you gringo-fy the pronunciation, but good luck if you have to refer to
Horacio Vialpando Monreal for example...
I've sent mistakes of boobs instead of boots. Fuck you instead of thank you.
I'm shitting instead of I'm sitting...
Spell checking can be so tiresome for every little text though. I’m sure I've
let a bunch of their instead of they're, cite sight and site where/wear go
through too. Wouldn't be surprised if some people think I'm illiterate by now.
Ah technology...

I had a real good chuckle at the dictation mention and how better it is to talk
than type at times.
Of course this would be true if SIRI wasn't so stupid and make so many mistakes.
I dictate a lot, but I have made it a rule never or at least extremely rarely
will I send a message without going over it word by word because sometimes
especially with a bit of background noise just hearing it read back can sound
like it's OK when it is not.
I find especially often I will say "a" or "him" or "them" and SIRI puts "the"
instead of "a", "them" instead of "him" and so on.
A couple of weeks ago I send a message to my Mom where I was talking about my
niece who wants to get a backpack for Christmas. As some of you know I own a
retail business and sell outdoor and hunting gear and backpacks are definitely
an item we have lots of. Anyways, I dictated the message but instead of
"backpack" SIRI wrote "fuck fuck", sorry for the bad word, but I am not kidding
and I sent the message and didn't catch it because I was doing this as I was
walking with traffic noise and it honestly sounded correct. My Mom did realize
what happened so it wasn't the end of the world, but sometimes what SIRI comes
up with can be potentially extremely embarrassing and at times I really scratch
my head. Another one is my guide dog's name which is Radar, SIRI never gets
that right, it either puts "reader" or "raider" or "rider"

I have also had this questions about the informed delivery app. Every morning,
I receive an e-mail from informed delivery. With that e-mail, I am able to
read the text of the mail pieces. If for some reason, I do not receive the
e-mail, I am unable to read the mail pieces with the informed delivery app on
my phone. When in the app, I double tap on the mail piece, and nothing
happens. I am unable to get to share. Yet, when they send me the e-mail, I am
able to double tap, and share comes up.
I have only used the iPhone, so I have no answers for the person wanting to use
windows.
If anyone is successful with using the informed delivery app, please let me
know.

Hello,
Yes you do need to worry about the case when considering wireless charging. If
you use a thicker case like the Defender wireless charging will not work. I
cannot recommend a case because I have the 10S and not the 10R I purchased a
wireless charging stand rather than the pad that lays flat and I like it just
fine.

Regardless of how you did it, has any list member successfully used informed
delivery from the United States postal service? If so, please tell me whether
you used the IOS app with help from Seeing A I or by some other means.

If I have the option, I would prefer to use Windows and possibly convenient
OCR. So I am hoping that there is a windows option available.

Thanks for feedback.

IT REALLY WORKS AND A CAUTION

2018-11-28 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone

Hi all,

Here's a quick story which should get you all laughing but it has its
serious side as well! Yes, it is about the use of the emergency callout
following a fall! ...

The trouble is, in my case it wasn't a fall but an attempt to act as
conductor at our evening song practice. There I was sitting on an arm
chair, beating time vigorously, and then the watch on my wrist came into
action. Yes, I was through to emergency with a number of friends
listening in!

I have realised that I must never use my left hand as a drumb whilst
wearing my watch.

Be careful, everyone, but be prepared to explain (or not) about the
music practice which resulted in such an action!

Out of step?

2018-11-28 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
I have Apple watch series four and iPhone xs and after the latest update to
iOS, the Health app seems out of step: today my Withings health mate app and my
Activity app both say I have taken 7,700 steps, while my Apple Health app
claims I have clocked up 11,300 steps. Anyone else noticing this?

Sleep tracking

2018-11-28 Thread pdllogan77
Wondered what others are using for sleep tracking. I have tried Sleep++ and
Pillows. The first of these is very accessible, but doesn't seem to do as
much as an appl like Pillows, however pillows isn't as accessible. There
are a lot of them out there, and a lot cost $$, so before spending any money
. wanted to get some input.

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

RE: Voice Message Alert question.

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Janet,
Have a look in Settings/Sounds and Haptics. There should be an option there to
choose the sound that plays when a new voicemail comes in.
As for the notifications themselves, I've no idea. Perhaps there is a problem
between your phone and your carrier which is preventing the carrier
notification from reaching your phone. It might be worth giving your carrier's
tech support department a ring.

Hi marie,
Nope they are from people that I know. Like I say though, it's such a rare
problem in my case that I just call them back and have done with it.
Thanks for the tip about resetting network settings though. I do know about
this but I must admit it's not something I've tried. I will make sure to turn
off iCloud keychain first so I don't lose all my wifi passwords!

Subject: Re: Iphone 6 and IOS 12 and incoming phone calls

Are these calls from people you recognize, or unknown calls? If they are the
latter, sometimes when spam calls are answered, there is actually no one on the
other end of the call. If it is happening with calls from contacts, there is a
definite problem. However I am not experiencing this with either the 6S or the
8, but I normally do not answer unknown numbers.
Things to try:
do a soft reboot.
Reset network settings. (this will require re-entering any networks you have
previously joined and changing the name of the phone if you have set a specific
name)

Hi,
Yes I've noticed it on an iPhone 8 on EE in the UK, but not often. It is very
frustrating and I can't find a fix. It happens sometimes on outgoing calls too.

I have noticed since IOS 12 that often I will get an incoming call. When I do
a 2 finger double tap to answer it it seems to answer but I hear nothing.
After a half minute or so the call hangs up.

I looked through the settings and can't find anything that seems to affect this.

Has anyone else noticed this? It is driving me crazy.

RE: selecting an option when on the phone

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Linda,

Theoretically, when you make a call, you should have a numeric keypad on the
screen. With that in mind, just take the phone away from your ear to activate
speaker phone mode and use Voiceover as usual on the screen to find the correct
number and type it. The keypad will act like a keyboard for this purpose and
should emit touch tones on successful entry of a number.

RE: iPhone 8+

2018-11-28 Thread Matthew Horspool
Hi Robert,
One of the speakers is in the usual place, to the right of the lightning port
with the lightning port closest to you and screen facing upwards.
The other speaker is in fact the earpiece. The grill to the left of the
lightning port is just a dummy grill, or perhaps it houses a microphone – but
it definitely doesn't house a speaker.

Re: Seeing AI, After A Little MoreThan A Year

2018-11-28 Thread kelbycarlson
Does anyone have more specific suggestions? Like I said, I've even had my
wife use the app to scan documents and she hasn't gotten any better results
than I have. I can sometimes get decent results with the short text channel
and it is useful for scanning barcodes, but the document channel never
works. I do try to position it farther away from the document and follow
the guidance instructions, but nothing helps.

http://AppleID.apple.com and log in there?

See if you can login with your new Apple Id and password.

As for the old one, what email did you use and to you still have access to that
email?

If so you should be able to go to Forgot Password and get a password reset link
emailed to the old email address.

I assume you now use janet.harv...@outlook.com as your Apple Id? What email did

HI Donna,

I’ve tried several times to enter my password, but the phone is not accepting
it, that is my problem. I don’t have any other restrictions either. This is
not just to update an app, this is to update my Apple id settings, in which I
can’t do, so as a result, I will not have access to certain account settings
until I can get this issue rectified. I have never selected any secret
questions either. I’m just thinking when I changed my password a few years
ago, I probably should have updated certain Apple settings, but I didn’t know
at the time I needed to do that.

Janet,

Try entering the password that you use to unlock your iPhone. When installing
IOS updates the iPhone will restart once the update is complete. If you have a
passcode set for restrictions it may be requesting that passcode be entered. My
guess is it wants your unlock password though. If you have forgotten the
password to your first iTunes username; when logged out of all iTunes accounts,
enter the old iTunes user email & swipe to I Forgot. You should have had to
setup secret questions when originally setting up the old iTunes account. You
will be given 2 of the questions, just type in their answer. If the questions
are answered correctly, you will be prompted to enter a new password &
confirm the new password.

Donna

  Hi,

Ok, I signed out, and I signed back in, and that was successful. I’m still
getting the exact same message though. Telling me I need to update my Apple
settings, in which I still get the same message saying wrong password, and then
I get a message saying to enter my Apple id, or I will not be able to use some
services until I update my Apple id settings. I get only one edit field, and
even though, I tried entering my Apple id as well as my password, it still says
wrong password. Any other suggestions? I don’t want to merge my old and new
Apple ID though,

  Thank you all.

Signed out of both iTunes and iCloud on your iPhone. Then try to sign back in
again. Another option is to clear you’re cache. The last suggestion would be
to call Apple accessibility. Unfortunately, there is no way to merge you’re old
and new Apple ID. Concerning iTunes, you should just be able to sign out on the
PC. If not, ensure your library is backed up, uninstall then reinstall iTunes.

Hi Mary,
I can't be much help as I only have one Homepod. However, I know that there is
a way of drilling down into a stereo pair to see the individual speakers that
make up that pair. If you can figure out how to do that, you might then be able
to change the Siri voice.
Perhaps others on here can assist further.

Sent from my iPhone I got the HomePod from Best Buy, and I have to say I am
very impressed with the sound of a pair of them for $500. They are very close
to the sound of speakers I have that I paid a lot more for several years ago,
which is what I was hoping. I first set up one HomePod, and I did see that
there was the availability for changing the Siri voice, as well as the voice
over speed. Now that I have a pair, I don’t see that anymore. You’re supposed
to do 3D Touch or long press on the HomePod in your Home app. Then you’re
supposed to go down to the bottom and see details. And when you’re in there,
you’re supposed to see the ability to change the Siri voice. The problem is
that now but it’s a pear, I don’t get any ability to long press and hold and
get any sort of screen with details. I wonder if you can only change the Siri
voice when the pods are not paired. That seems strange.
