1. What display do you have now?
I have a BrailleEdge 40.

I use Duxbury, and there's a script that I can call up that tells me,

Happy new year and reflections

2018-12-30 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi Everyone,

I'm about to close off for 2018, and wanted to wish all of you a happy new
year, the best opportunities knocking at your doors, and plenty of adventures
to come :)

I also wanted to share with you some reflections and an update on what's coming
up with Astreos.

Some of you may know, but the app has been featured across the world, in a
physics magazine in the UK, a Russian science magazine, Blind cool tech and
many others.

To keep pace with the feature requests, I have been working hard on a few
things, but thought it better to create a blog entry that you can read below:

https://www.oseyeris.com/post/a-look-back-and-the-expanse-of-astreos

Do keep up to date with what's happening as next year I'm adding a feature that
will blow away both astronomers and amateur users alike. In fact, this has
never been done in a space app, though quite a few features are already new and
unique.

I will be pushing some updates for those who are on the beta list as well, with
a new universal search feature as we have many mor objects available, now also
black holes. Imagine knowing where the center of our galaxy is, and seeing and
feeling the massive black hole that is residing right there, tearing stars
apart. I get a sense of the grandeur of the universe when I check it out.

In any case, logging off for this great year and wishing everyone the best for
the next :)

A++

RE: A Question about Synchronizing Text Messages between Apple Watch and iPhone

2018-12-30 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello Mark,

Unfortunately as far as I know there is no way to have messages synchronised
between any device and the Apple Watch.

Happy new year to you all and all list members.

Subject: A Question about Syncronizing Text Messages between Apple Watch and
iPhone

Hello All,

Well, now that I have begun to send text messages on my Watch, I am discovering
that removing a thread from the phone, does not remove it from the watch and,
sadly, vice versa.

Now, as I do not want message syncing between Mac OS and iOS, I have the iCloud
message syncing feature disabled on my account.

So the question: Is there a way to have messages synchronized between only the
watch and the phone, to which it is paired?

Thank you,

Mark

RE: OT: Looking for a Second Braille Display.

2018-12-30 Thread Robert Wright
It sounds like you are looking for something similar to the braillenote apex.
There is a braillenote touch but this is a android device with a braille
display.as for knowing what cell you are on as you have described this would be
based on the app you are using such as pages or word. Something that would have
a status line.

Favor needed: could you write me off list? I have a Duxbury favor to ask. I too
have the BrailleEdge40.i have books I have downloaded in brf that I need
reformatted for a 40 cell braille display. It would take me a year to try and
save up to buy Duxbury. I was wondering if I could send you the book to
reformat for me.

Re: OT: Looking for a Second Braille Display.

2018-12-30 Thread Richard Turner

The maker of the Vario Ultra went out of business, so do not even think about
one of those.
As far as I'm aware, there are only two options really when it comes to braille
note takers which is what Danny is talking about.
The Polaris from HIMS, who also make the Braille Edge; and the Braillenote
Touch.
They are both based on Android.
The polaris has, in my opinion, a better overall interface, but I'd say anyone
considering a braille note taker today needs to find a way to get some hands-on
time with each unit.
They also need to have a good bank account as you are talking around 5500
dollars.
O, and none of them will tell you which cell you are on in a line. You'll have
to simply count, though most of them have an indicator every 5 cells.
There is the El Braille I guess, but I've not seen that one.
HTH,
Richard

Hello Mark,
Since Apple uses iCloud as their way of syncing between devices, I do not know
any way this is possible without iCloud being enabled.

Re: Voice Dream Reader and Dropbox

2018-12-30 Thread Ann Byrne
When sequencing files, remember that chapter
10-19 will follow chapter 1 unless you make it chapter 01.

At 10:46 PM 12/29/2018, you wrote:

To add a little, make sure the file names are
sequential, like chapter1.mp3, chapter2.mp3, etc.
Put all the files in a zip file with the name of
the book as the name of the zip file.
Then, when you download the zip file into VDR,
you will have a book with each file being a chapter in the correct order.
It doesn't matter what the names are, so long as
a computer would put them in order.

Hi,

I am attempting to learn how to download books
from Dropbox to Voice Dream Reader. The book
is in multiple files with one chapter per
file. The only way I can figure out how to
download it to VDR on my phone requires me to
download each file separately. When this is
done, each file (chapter) is listed as a separate book in my VDR library.

How do I get all the files into one book on VDR?

Thanks.

I wanted to add to what River said. If you don’t know how to get into the

fingers. This will take you to the control center and then lock orientation

As long as the call switches to speakerphone the proximity sensor is working
correctly and it is not being blocked. Have you tried to close all apps and

Is it still a problem if it is more like 18 inches away?

It really sounds like the proximity sensor is being triggered for some reason.

Maybe take a dry, microfiber cloth and really scrub back and forth with it over
that area of the screen and see if that helps.

The phone is maybe ten or twelve inches from my face when this happens and I am
holding the phone by the edges so my finger is not covering the ear opening. I
have successfully entered numbers before, just not since this last update.

I've not had any problems, but I also never keep the phone near my face. Also,
make sure your hand isn't covering the top portion of the phone where the

Hi,

recently i have noticed that the screen on my iphone 7 becomes totally
unresponsive during phone calls. For example, when presented with a choice of
numbers to enter -- press 1 for this, press 2 for that -- I am unable to
detect the number pad or anything else on the screen. I'm told by a sighted
friend that the number pad is present, but voiceover is completely
unresponsive. When this happens, I cannot even double tap to end the call.

Any thoughts?

have him wait a while, then reboot the phone by at least powering it off and
back on.
Then try again. It should let him try 2 or 3 more times.
But, Apple makes it very clear from the beginning that passwords are required
to have at least one capital letter.
It is a tedious process to reset a password so hopefully the reboot will work.

RE: Amazon Echo Definitely Better than Apple HomePod, in One Respect

Hi Mary,

Do you use Google to search for stuff on the web? I also see you have a gmail
address, I bet Google is happily collecting information about all you do
online. You can choose Apple over Android or choose to buy an Echo over a
Google Home or not buy a smart speaker at all, but you absolutely cannot not
separate this stuff any more today and if you are online you may as well make
peace with the fact that you are giving up a good amount of information for the
convenience of it.

Hey Mary,

I’m glad to hear someone on my side of the fence for once. It seems that the
internet seems to hate Apple for the sake of hating Apple. The HomePod in my
eyes will never be what Amazon has made the Echo system. I am personally ok
with that too. It was created to be a home speaker system to listen to your
music, podcasts, and even news related topics. I love it for the simplicity. Of
course you can also check the weather, set timers, etc. It does all of this
just like the Echo system of speakers. The skills that are in the Echo store
are simply to cheesy for me to take seriously. The only skill I am looking
forward to is the MLB skill to tell Alexa to listen to the Atlanta Braves this
season. I think I might be able to accomplish this task with the HomePod and
the Siri short cut for the MLB @Bat app too. We will have to wait and see.

RE: swimming with apple watch

2018-12-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I agree, you likely paused it at times. By the way, it is not correct that only
time counts where your heart rate is up during a walk or swim. If I set the
Workout to Outdoor Walk Open Goal and then go for a 45 minute walk where I sit
on a bench for 10 minutes half way through the walk it still tells me that my
workout is 45 minutes unless I go in the settings and turn on to pause the
workout if there is no movement.
Same as during a pool swim, I use my Apple Watch for that all the time and I
have it set for 1000 metres which is 40 lanes in a 25-metre pool. It usually
takes me about 32 minutes to swim that if I don't stop, but if I stop for 5
minutes and it takes me 37 or 38 minutes it will show that total time.
It's not the heart rate which matters but that setting regarding
movement/motion.

personally, I would say leave it alone when doing the swim, as unless you
can get it to tell you the time by vibration mode, when swimming the speaker
doesn't work very well anyway.
I would also say that if you want a good swimming tracker, you may want to
think about investing in a marlin, from:
http://www.platysens.com/marlin/
as whilst I haven't had the time issue you mentioned, certainly in open
water, the distance registered on the apple watch, compared to the distance
I know I have done, is way off of the mark. so in future, I will probably
leave the swim tracking to the marlin, and just use the apple watch for an
alarm, to tell me when I need to come back to shore or what ever.

You have to have a certain level of heart rate for it to count. So if
you stopped to check the time, your heart rate likely dropped.
When I take long walks, I only get a certain amount of credit but when
I use my elliptical which is constant and hard work, I get the exact
time credit.

Hello everyone,

I am really starting to get in to listening to podcasts. I mean, I have
listened to a few every once in a while. But now I am listening to many more,
and more often.

So I was wondering, what are some of the most accessible podcast Apps?

How do I find 1 that will have most of what I want?

I know that Apple offers a podcast App. But does it offer everything that most
catchers, or players might offer?

Thank you,

Reason? It has the best speech compression in my opinion.

How do I manage my iPhone SE, when I know there is a notification, yet want to make and talk on a call?

2018-12-30 Thread Carolyn Arnold
Today, I had a notification, two in fact. But, I wanted to
call my friend before checking them. The only way I could be
the boss of that one was by using a head set. Also, I turned
off Voice Over, which I don't like to do during a call, in
case one comes in that I want to know about or even take.

When I did get off the phone, I never could get the caller's
voice mail to play, but she speaks so well, that every word
was in text with no under score. The other was for a
prescription, which is ready now, but I knew would be ready
tomorrow. It was already dark when that message came about
the prescription, so I won't be getting it until tomorrow.

Anyway, bottom line, is there some way that I can put all of

You could try turning on Do Not Disturb while on the phone.
You could change your notification settings to no alerts, and even no sound.

Re: question about Dream Reder

2018-12-30 Thread Richard Turner

>From the manual:
Library

Supported Document Formats

Go to the section "Reader" - "Visual Settings" - "Layout Choices for Documents
of Different Formats" to read about how Voice Dream Reader handles a particular
type of content.
Adobe PDF (.pdf) Password protected and DRM encrypted PDF files are not
supported.
DRM-free EPUB eBooks (.epub). Both EPUB 2.0 and EPUB 3.0 books are supported.
DAISY text or audio books (.zip) DAISY 2.02 audio or text, and DAISY 3.0 audio
or text. DAISY 3.0 multi-part books are not supported. Also, if a DAISY book
contains both audio and text, we only retain the text, since almost all
full-text-full audio books use TTS.
Microsoft Word (doc and docx).
Microsoft PowerPoint (ppt and pptx).
Apple Pages (page).
Apple Keynote (key).
Google Doc.
HTML (html and htm).
Web Archive (webarchive).
Rich Text Format (rtf).
Audio (mp3, mp4, and m4a).
Zipped audio (.zip) The ZIP file creates a single book item in Voice Dream. The
name of the ZIP file becomes the title, and each MP3 file becomes a chapter or
track with the name of the file as chapter name. Please make sure the file
names are sorted in the same order as it appears in the book. Having a "track
number" works great. For example, "01 Chapter 1.mp3", "02 Chapter 2.mp3", etc.

Re: How do I manage my iPhone SE, when I know there is a notification, yet want to make and talk on a call?

I turned off all notifications except for those I consider essential like
weather alerts or for uber and lyft.

You could take several different approaches.
You could try turning on Do Not Disturb while on the phone.
You could change your notification settings to no alerts, and even no sound.
You could turn off notifications completely.

case one comes in that I want to know about or even take.

Anyway, bottom line, is there some way that I can put all of
that notification repeat stuff on hold while I have a
conversation with someone? Thanks.

Unable to delete iphone custom ring tones with latest version of itunes JAWS2019

2018-12-30 Thread Shai
Hello,
I am using an iPhone with iOS 12.1.2 and iTunes 12 latest version on a
pc running Windows 10 with JAWS 2019. I have a few custom ring tones
that I placed on my phone through iTunes but I am noticing that when I
go to the tones section in iTunes with my phone connected, they do not
seem to appear. The tones do however still seem to be on my phone.
Has anyone seen this behavior? Thinking that there was a different
method of deleting tones now, I went into the folder that I pasted the
tones from and erased them this way but somehow they still continue to
play on the phone.
Thank you in advance for any responses.
