RE: Test Drive an Orbits Reader Display Anyone? I Don't think so

2019-03-14 Thread Bill Outman
That's surprising, because I know they had one at the NFB national convention
last year, and I looked it over.

I'm interested in one, just need to work on financing, as my funds are tight.

One of my fellow local chapter members has one that I looked at again recently.
I am impressed by the crispness of the display, the fact the cells can be
easily felt, a factor for me in attempting to read Braille.

It could double as my Bluetooth keyboard.

Subject: Test Drive an Orbits Reader Display Anyone? I Don't think so

Hello Everyone,

Today, I went to the exhibit hall at the 2019 CSUN Assistive Technology
Conference here in southern California.

Among other goals, I was interested in test driving a few Braille displays for
use with my iOS devices.

Imagine my surprise when I arrived at the A.P.H. booth and discovered that they
had no Orbit Reader 20s on hand for visitors to explore. While I was there, 2
other people walked up and asked about the Orbit Reader 20 and were equally
disappointed at the lack of a demo model.

I did, however, get a look at an entire host of other BRaile displays, from
other companies, including the latest version of the Focus 40. Now, that, is a
beautiful device.

Regardless, I was sorely disappointed at not having an opportunity to test
drive the Orbit Reader 20 Braille display.

And the beat goes on,

Mark

Re: Keyboards

2019-03-14 Thread Richard Turner
Well, I have not found one better than Flicktype; though I don't use it that
much because I too do not want a subscription.
I use MBraille for input when not using a bluetooth keyboard.
GBoard from Google has the period and at sign on the screen; but it also has a
search box above the keyboard rather than the numbers row even though it says
that is an option.
Also, the settings do not speak with VoiceOver as to whether they are on or off.
So I wouldn't recommend that one.
You can try Flicktype for free and use it for somethings from within the app.
Good luck,
Richard

Re: Hearing aids locking up when streaming media or telephone

Hi Carolyn:

Mine are Rexton brand from Costco. I have never had any problem with VO.
The only problem I have is when I am using a blue tooth keyboard to type a
text and it is sitting close to my iPhone. Then there is a lot of static in
the aids. Other than that, they work perfectly for everything else...phone
calls, TV wireless, etc..

What do they plan to do to resolve your problem?

RE: Hearing aids locking up when streaming media or telephone

2019-03-14 Thread Tony
I have not had this happen with my Resound aids although I haven’t had much
experience with them and the iPhone yet.

My previous Phonak aids never had problems with the iPhone but do have problems
with the company’s Bluetooth transmitters locking up at times and needing to be
powered down and back up to reconnect. Phonak says I am the only one with this
problems but a friend has the same problem and is being told he is the only one.

I am currently using one Phonak and one Resound aid. The phonak gives me
betterunderstanding and doesn’t have problems with the iPhone. The Resound
never drops out when using the computer with their Bluetooth transmitter and
allows me to hear myself better when singing. With this combination I can make
notes on the computer while taking a phone call.

Harry,
Step 2 on that page is the link to get the scanner beta.
It doesn't have the name; just the code, but if you have testflight installed,
that link will open in testflight and you can get the app.

Query re what settings I ought to check having upgraded to a new IPhone

2019-03-14 Thread 'Eleanor Roberts' via VIPhone
Hi all

I’m hoping someone can assist me with this. I’ve just upgraded to an IPhone 8.
The shop transferred my sim card, and most things seem to have come across ok.
However, I’m just after any advice as to what settings people think I
should/it’s important to check on my new phone to make sure they’ve all
transferred correctly?? I’m particularly interested in saving as much power as
possible, and also in protecting my privacy. So any advice would be veery much
appreciated.

Secondly, how do I go about changing the name of my IPhone, both on my phone
and my Mac?, so that I know it’s my new phone I’m dealing with? And how do I go
about removing any old phones from my Mac?

Thirdly, there are some apps on this phone that I definitely don’t want
on/won’t use, and I thought that if I removed them I might save myself quite a
bit of storage space. So how/what’s the best way of doing this?

Finally, how do I check that text message forwarding is working correctly
between my new phone and my IPad/Mac?

Sorry for all the questions, but any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Eleanor

Re: Voice Dream Scanner beta

2019-03-14 Thread 'Wren LANGLEY' via VIPhone
hi Richard,
When I first read your messages, somehow I missed the one that had the link
with the scanner for the Scanner app.

I found it, downloaded it, and all is well.

Thank you for the help. We were very nice person, and always willing to help. I
want you to know that I appreciate it.

I did go back to the App Store and it still told me the app was not available.
I live in the United States and independence Missouri.
I am very sorry that dictation is not working well for me anymore. Siri doesn’t
seem to work well either, and my only reason for saying that is that I want to
let you know that it just doesn’t work. So I’m sorry for the dictation errors.

Hello Richard, so here is what I did and if I did something incorrect maybe you
could let me know. I clicked on the link and got the voice dream beta, that
worked perfectly. Then I went into Voice Dream and clicked on add and clicked
to turn on the scanner, it sent me to the App Store, and when I tried to
download that Scanner app, it said it wasn’t available in my country. Do you
know if this is not available in the US? Thanks

Well, for my money, it blows knfbe away. And I paid too much for that app,
which has actually kind of gotten worse recently rather than better. It imports
PDF files, which is the only reason I have it on my phone. It seems to me the
five dollars isn’t quite enough. I agree you can’t charge too much. But five
dollars is like giving the thing away, and Winston isn’t Microsoft.

Which beta did you install?
Follow the link I sent for the scanner app.
Or search for Voice Dream Scanner beta and follow the link you find that says
something about join the beta ...
I do not recall where you live, but in the US it is readily available; but not
in the app store yet, only through the beta program.

Subject: Voice Dream Scanner beta

For those who have not heard, Winston Chen, the developer of Voice Dream
Reader, is developing an OCR app called Scanner. It is in public beta, so
anyone can test it and give him feedback.
If you also install the Voice Dream Reader beta, you will be able to choose
Scanner from the Add dialog in VDR.

Here is the latest info from Testflight which you have to have installed in
order to use the betas but it is free in the app store.
I've tested the app quite a bit in the two days I've known about it and it
blows everything else out of the water.
There is one very annoying thing in beta 3 that I've asked him to disable, but
if Edge Detection is on, there is a constant tone playing that is truly
annoying.
It doesn't say below, but you can use the up volume button to capture the image.
Saving as PDF is not only fully accessible, but it retains any images in the
document.
At this point, unless I can convince him to charge more, he is thinking of
charging $5.00 for the app.
I think it is worth much more.
Here is the info from TestFlight.

Here's the high level stuff:

- State-of-the-art A.I. for OCR and text recognition: Fast and accurate, even
in poor lighting conditions. Works entirely on device: No need for internet and
your data stays private.

- Export scans as plain text or PDF with embedded text to another app, or save
them on your local device, iCloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive.

- Works with Voice Dream Reader. You need to download the latest beta version
of Voice Dream Reader, version 4.8.0. If you haven't signed up for beta, you
can do it here:
https://testflight.apple.com/join/5amQM57U.
After downloading the latest Reader Beta, you will be able access the scanner
directly from Reader and add scanned documents to your Reader library.

Additional Features:

- Automatic detection of document edges for stretching and cropping

- Automatic detection of document orientation

- Automatic image enhancement

- Batch mode for scanning multiple pages quickly

- Spoken words are highlighted in the text or the image

- Select text-to-speech voice and change speed

- Uses premium voices purchased in Voice Dream Reader

Beta 3:

- Auto Scan (if an page is detected and phone is held steady for 2 seconds)

- Audible tone for page detection. VoiceOver only. Should there be a way to
disable this?

- Capture Button is now the entire video preview window

- No longer read content a

Yes, iPhone.

You have to install Testflight from the app store first. Then follow the link
below to get the beta.

>From Testflight

- No longer read content again after enhancing image

- Minor bug fixes

Beta 2:

- Improved orientation detection

- Added option to automatic read text after capture

- Fix crashes

Beta 1:

This new app let you scan paper documents with the camera and recognize text,
listen using built-in text-to-speech, and save and export.

Limitations: Only languages using Latin alphabets are supported. For example,
Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Russian, and Arabic are not supported.

Re: Voice Dream Scanner beta

2019-03-14 Thread Richard Turner

it already blows Seeing AI away with the fact that you can do multipage
documents in a batch and save as one file with formatting in tact. And it is
all done right on the phone!

This is also where it blows KNFB Reader away to because still, for $99.99, they
cannot retain formatting.
I'd gladly pay quite a bit more for an app this easy to use and especially with
the integration with Voice Dream Reader.
But, please, try it out and give him the feedback you have on anything and
everything about the app.

Re: The Health App

2019-03-14 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Terri,

You can record health data manually, but there are apps that make it easier to
record particular types. For instance, if you use a sleep tracking app, it
records sleep data. If you have an Apple Watch, it records activity data. There
are also shortcuts that record health data, such as one for logging water.

Best,
Anna

Re: GPS and Destination Direction

2019-03-14 Thread Richard Turner

most of them do in my experience.
Google Maps, Apple Maps, MapQuest, etc.
That doesn't mean they always do it, or always get it right.
In my area, even numbers are on the south and west sides of the street. So if
it tells me it's on the left side and I am heading east and it is an even
number, I know it is wrong since odd numbers are on the north side.
So, I ignore what apps say and go by the address pattern where I live.

RE: Returning to call after holding

2019-03-14 Thread Richard Turner
It has been a long time since I had this happen, but there should be a return
to call button in the upper left corner on the screen.
If not, and you just have the keypad on the screen, in the lower right there is
the hide keypad button, double tap that and one of the 6 buttons will be return
to call or some phrase like that.

Sometimes, when I am on a phone call, I get another call at the same time. I
can find the button to hold and accept, but how do I return to the previous
call? This is with VoiceOver running.

RE: seeing AI version 3 update today

2019-03-14 Thread Bill Outman
Well, AIRA, which is a subscription service that does a lot of what Be My Eyes
does, have an option for smart glasses. That a different type of service,
though. I am not sure if you have AIRA available in the U. K. yet. I have
heard of people using a hands free mount for the phone so the phone can be put
on a baseball or construction hat. I have no personal experience with that,
however. I’d be curious about how that was done.

Hi Chris,

I just wish the app would work with a pair of smart glasses; that would be my
dream come true.

Greetings,

Seeing AI has a great update today.

One of my favorite changes is that you can reoer the channels to have them in
your preferred order.

I will explain it in the context of the list below.

Mar 12, 2019: Version 3.0

•Explore photos by touch: This new feature allows you to explore how objects in
a photo are arranged. Select "Explore Photo" from the Scene channel, photo

browser, or when recognizing photos from other apps. Then, move your finger
over the screen to hear where objects are located.

•All new iPad support.

•Get faster access to your favorite features by customizing the order in which
channels are shown.

To do this, open the menu from the main screen, go to settings,
then Reorder Channels.

The channels are listed in reverse order on the screen. Short Text is listed
at the top, and Light detection is the bottom. Next to each channel is a
“reorder button.”

Hold that button and drag the apps to your preferred arrangement, remembering
that on the main screen when you are done, Short Text will be the first channel.

VoiceOver users of course have to double tap and hold the second tap.

It works great!

•On the Person channel, you can now teach Seeing AI to recognize someone new,
directly from the main screen.

The Face Recognition button is now on the main screen. A few
left flicks from the person channel.

•When recognizing photos from other apps, you will now hear the processing
sound as in the main app.

Enjoy,

Richard
