Yes I do know about this trick. For some reason on Dish in order to get any
audio description on TBS you have to change the SAP setting to Spanish even
though there is a setting for audio description in the accessibility settings.
It makes no sense to me.

Scott, here's a trick that works with dish sometimes, that you can try. Try
switching it to spanish, sometimes that will give you the audio description
with dish.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your message. I also live in GA but I am not in Atlanta but
we both get our CBS from the same affiliate so I think that I will try and
reach out to them to see if I can get them to understand that this is not
acceptable.

You said that this began happening for you about 2 weeks ago, it sounds as
if that they definitely did something to cause this. at that time because it is
at this point that we stopped getting the descriptive track on Dish.

Hello, I am also actually having that same issue. However, I have Comcast.
It actually started happening two weeks ago, and this is something that has
happened with my CBS local affiliate in the past, but it has been a long time
since it has happened. Also, when it has happened before, it did not affect all
of my cable boxes, and it didn’t affect me watching the show on the Comcast
Xfinity stream app. However, this time it is affecting everything. I don’t know
where you live, but I live in Atlanta, Georgia. My local affiliate has no idea
what I’m talking about when I’ve spoken to them about this issue. So, I try to
reach out to the accessibility department at CBS. I’ve left a couple of
messages for them, but so far I haven’t received a return phone call.

  Hello,

I know that this list is for iOS related topics but tonight I am very
frustrated with a service that I am hoping that some of you on the list might
be able to assist me with.

My wife and I are huge fans of The Big Bang Theory and up until recently
we have been able to enjoy the show with audio description on CBS. As this show
is down to the last 6 episodes we are wanting to be able to watch these final
shows with the audio description, but for some reason Dish is not giving us the

not seem to know why this is happening.

My question for the list is: is there anyone else that is having this
issue with Dish and if so, have you alerted Dish of the issue?

We are really considering switching back to Direct Tv but with Dish we
have Text To Speech on the living room tv as well as the one in the bedroom. If
I remember correctly when we were with Direct Tv a couple of years ago we could
not get Text To Speech in the bedroom. If there are any Direct Tv users on the

How to use Calendar with Siri in iOS, iMore

2019-04-19 Thread M. Taylor
iMore - The #1 iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch blog - Thursday, April 18, 2019

How to use Calendar with Siri

Siri is not just voice commands on all of your Apple devices-it's your
personal digital assistant as well. And with a digital assistant, you'll
probably want to use Siri to manage your hectic schedule. After all, chances
are high that we all have meetings, appointments, and scheduled events to
keep track of every day, so keeping them all together on your iPhone, iPad,
or Mac just makes sense.
However, while inputting everything in manually is totally possible, using
Siri to add, update, and even cancel events just makes your life much
easier, and who doesn't want that?
So here's everything you can do with Siri when it comes to managing your
hectic schedule.

How to create a calendar event with Siri
When you're out-and-about, it can be a hassle to open up Calendar, create a
new event, and then fill out all of the details. In fact, it's much easier
to just tell Siri and have her add it to your Calendar for you.
1. Activate Siri by holding down your Home or Power button, or just say
"Hey Siri".
2. Tell Siri what you want to schedule, including date and time, along
with a name if applicable.
For example, say "Schedule a call with Lory Gil tomorrow at 12 pm." Of
course, you'll replace the names and date and time with your own info.
If you have multiple calendars and want your event to go to a particular
one, make sure to mention it to Siri. Otherwise, it will just go to your
default calendar.
3. Siri will then display a preview of your event and ask you to
confirm.
4. If there is something wrong with the event info, you can tell Siri
to Change to edit details.
5. You can also Cancel the event if you change your mind.
6. If you want to add it to your Calendar, just say Yes when Siri
confirms.

How to update a calendar event with Siri
Sometimes you'll need to make adjustments to your scheduled events because
of last-minute changes and whatnot. We get it, stuff happens, and it's often
a very common thing. Siri can help you make changes to your appointments,
and it's super easy!
1. Activate Siri by holding down your Home or Power button, or say "Hey
Siri".
2. Tell Siri that you want to move or reschedule an event.
Simply say something along the lines of "Move my 3 pm meeting tomorrow" or
"Reschedule my doctor appointment to next Tuesday."
3. When you have multiple events in one day, Siri will ask you to
confirm the event you want to update.
If it's a recurring event, Siri will ask if you want to modify just that
event or all future events. You can tap on the options or speak them to her.
4. Let Siri know what details need to be modified.
For example, you can say "Move my meeting on Thursday at 10 am to tomorrow
at 3 pm."
5. Once you give Siri a new time and date for an appointment, she will
ask you to confirm with a Yes, either verbally or by tapping the button.

How to cancel a calendar event with Siri
If you no longer need to have a meeting on your calendar, just cancel it
completely. Siri is happy to assist with that as well.
1. Activate Siri by holding down the Home or Power button, or just say
"Hey Siri".
2. Tell Siri which event you want to cancel.
For example, you can say "Cancel my lunch with Ryan tomorrow at 4 pm."
If you had multiple meetings with someone, Siri will ask you to confirm the
specific one that you want to cancel.
3. Siri will want you to confirm what you just told her, so just say
Yes or tap the button.

How to view and check your Calendar with Siri
Sometimes we're just crazy busy and forget what's on our calendars. Don't
worry, you can just ask Siri if there's anything scheduled on a particular
day.
1. Activate Siri by holding down your Home or Power button, or just say
"Hey Siri".
2. Tell Siri something along the lines of, "What's my schedule for
today?" or "What's on my calendar for Saturday?" or "What's on my calendar
for May 20?"
3. After you specify a date for Siri to check, she will tell you if
there is anything scheduled, as well as display and read off what they are.

How to use Siri with third-party calendar apps
In iOS 12, Apple added Siri Shortcuts, which allows you to quickly do
everyday tasks with your favorite apps just by asking Siri. This means you
can have Siri work with your favorite third-party calendar apps, like
Fantastical, just by asking. Siri will also learn your routines over time,
suggesting common tasks on the Lock Screen or in Search. But you can add
them manually through the Settings app.
1. Launch Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
2. Scroll down and tap on Siri & Search.
3. Take a look at Suggested Shortcuts and see if there is one for your
preferred third-party calendar app.
4. If it doesn't appear in the suggestions, or if you want to see more,
just tap on All Shortcuts.
5. Go through the list and find your favorite calendar app, t

tried going into edit mode and doing a a double tap and hold and then moving to

Hello,

The speaker sound issue, if it is at the top of the phone, can be
fixed with blue tack.

RE: Questions about a possible fix or a full upgrade?

2019-04-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I agree, it’s too bad you didn’t get the battery replaced before December 31,
Apple had a special deal and did battery replacements for $29.95 ($34.95 here
in Canada). However, since your iPhone 7 is most likely out of warranty by now
even if you bought Apple Care Plus, I would look for a good cell phone repair
shop in your area and get it done there, it will be much cheaper than if you
take it to an Apple Store.
As for the sound, did you make sure your voice didn’t accidently get switched
to the compressed version instead of the high quality version?
You do say it sounds muffled in general, does that also apply to playing music?
If you want to upgrade and can at all stretch it out to September I would
recommend it since we are now more than half way there. I would certainly not
recommend an upgrade from an iPhone 7 to an iPhone 8 even though I decided to
get the iPhone 8 last fall, but I came from an iPhone 6S so a bit more of a
difference. I am sure the XS is nice, but keep in mind you’ll pay more, if you
want to upgrade now maybe take a look at the XR, most people I know who bought
it are very satisfied with it and it’s less money than the XS. With respect to
size it is a bit bigger than your iPhone 7, but not as big as the older Plus
phones like 6S Plus, 7 Plus and 8 Plus even though it has a larger screen. Of
course you do loose the home button and while in the long run we all need to
get used to that, getting an iPhone 8 would make sense if you really want a
home button like on your 7 and it would serve you for the next 3 or even 4
years with 1 battery replacement maybe after 2 years if you want to maintain
the battery performance.

Hello Jim,

If you got an iPHone 7 right after they came out, you've had it for 2 and a
half years or so. It's not at all surprising if the battery is starting to
fail. Replacing a battery is a lot cheaper than replacing a phone. I have no
idea about the speaker sound. You might want to take it to an Apple store and
get it checked out.

Best,
Anna

Lately, I've noticed that I have to charge it more often than I used to, and
I'm wondering why that might be if my use is about the same.
And today, I've noticed that the sound on my iPhone speakers sounds slightly
muffled. This morning, it sounded clear, and now I don't understand what
happened. I've tried turning the phone off and back on, and I've also tried
doing a reset. Still sounds weird, not just with VoiceOver but with Siri and
audio in general.

I'm wondering if I should maybe begin looking at a possible upgrade, since AT&T
has told me I've been eligible for the past six months or so.
What are your thoughts on this, or if you think I shouldn't upgrade, then what
do I do about my sound and about the increasing need to charge my battery more
often?
If you think I should upgrade, should it be to an 8 or a 10R? I'm totally
blind so don't need the other fancy camera of the 10S; although, I love the
size of the 10S.
I'm just beginning to look at my options and want the opinion of the experts

I am a frequent lyft rider. This morning I received an Email from
another list saying that yesterday's update to the app created an
accessibility glitch in that the "Request a Ride" button no longer worked
with Voiceover turned on.

later today we took a lyft Ride. There was no issue with that button,
but after pressing it, the next screen only showed that a driver had been
found, but the usual identifying info about the driver and car, and the
expected arrival time was not present. Then when the driver was one
minute

away that screen popped up. Has anyone noticed any issues with the newly
updated app? I understand that lyft has acknowledged that there are
issues,

and promises to fix them soon.

Re: Questions about a possible fix or a full upgrade?

2019-04-19 Thread Wayne Merritt
Jim, I have had speaker issues as you describe on the 7, 7 Plus, and
my current 8 Plus. I still don't know why it keeps happening to me,
but after several months, I start noticing a decreasing speaker volume
in the speaker at the top of the phone. The bottom speaker has worked
great and I haven't noticed any decrease there. Others have commented
the same to me. Regarding whether or not to upgrade, note that new
phones will be coming out in September, and at this point, it may be
worth waiting to see what Apple does rather than rushing out to get an
upgraded model right now. Also, in September, the prices of last
year's phones will drop. If you can get by for the next 5 months or so
then you might as well wait.

Dear Robin & List:
If you want too reboot the phone after an IOS update and find it is still
working strangely, go to settings general, select reset at the bottom of the
list. Select reset everything. This does a more comprehensive clear-out of the
phone, erasing any junk left from the IOS upgrade. You may lose network
passwords; however it is worth it to have to re-input them.

RE: Restart

2019-04-19 Thread Brian K. Lingard
Dear Robin & List:

If the phone has a home button, press home & power for seven seconds, this
reboots the phone.

If no home button, press volume down button & power for seven seconds, this
reboots the phone.

I find Iphones often give a brief shake when rebooting. This confirms they are
rebooting.
Warning! Holding down home or volume down & POWER MORE THAN 7 seconds can
place the phone in recovery mode where you need to connect it to iTunes to
recover the phone.

RE: Signing documents with VoiceOver?

Have you tried adding ‘handwriting’ to your rotor?

Subject: Signing documents with VoiceOver?

Do any VoiceOver users on this list sign documents using your iPhone? I am
able to do a signature by opening a PDF attachment in the Mail app and doing
the following:
After the attachment is open, double-tap on Markup and VoiceOver then says
“Markup on button.”
Double-tap on Add Annotation.
Double-tap on Signature.
Then there is a spot where I can double-tap to start drawing my signature.
After I draw my signature, I double-tap on Done to close the attachment.
The problem is that the signature is in the wrong place in the document.
It seems I’m almost there I just need to know how to get the signature in the
correct spot.

RE: ReStart

2019-04-19 Thread Robert Wright
When your phone is plugged in it will make a tone to alert you. There has been
an out cry for years to have a tone when it is on battery power.

When ReStartin a Windows PC, there is an Audio
Tone to Indicate that My PC is beginning its ReStart
&
When My Samsung Galaxy begins its ReStart, it
Indicates such by emitting a little Vibration Alert-Tone
&
there isn't any such Indication on My iPhone when Turning it ON
