ear.ly

2019-06-18 Thread Gordon
I haven't seen anyone talk about ear.ly out here, so I wanted to let you
all know about it. It's free and an audio version of facebook live or
periscope that's blind friendly. It's actually pretty cool because you
can stream live and invite anyone who's listening to join you as a
speaker. There are so many different ways this app could be beneficial.
Some people use it to go live when they're walking around outside, but
it could be used for demonstrating products or technology you have.

RE: Sighted people and Voiceover Screen Curtain (was: how do I unsub from this list)

2019-06-18 Thread janet gross
Sieghard and all,
Ok once again, I will only reply to this Screen curtain issue one more time.
I’ve seen many sighted people including my family, as well as my friends using
the screen curtain, matter of fact, I even seen my Niece’s school teacher using
it. please don’t ask me why, but the fact remains, I see this quite often.
I’ve even been on a public bus, and seen a bus driver using it, and the reason
I know this is because they either tell me they like this screen curtain if
they know me, or I hear Voiceover saying screen curtain on or off. Maybe some
sighted people use that feature for privacy as that is the reason I use the
screen curtain feature. Who knows, but it doesn’t matter to me if a sighted
person wants to use an accessibility feature. Although, I have noticed most of
them who use the screen curtain, is when either they turn their phone off, or
like this school teacher, she uses Siri to set the timer, and she turns on the
screen curtain, maybe she doesn’t want the kids to see her phone screen. They
might not even realize they are using an accessibility feature, so if they want
to, so be it!
So some blind people say sighted people don’t know anything about
accessibility, and I say I do know some sighted people do know about it. We
all are certainly entitled to our own opinions.
Please let’s not turn this in to bashing.

I could ask the opposite, what makes you think all, most or even some sighted
people know about the screen curtain?
I am completely blind but as part of operating a retail store in a small town
where the only other few visually impaired or blind people are some elderly
folks who have lost their sight I deal exclusively with sighted people and that
includes going to buying shows where I often pass my phone to a sales rep to
show him a picture or ask him/her to take a picture of a product to show to my
employees. I rarely have come across anybody who can even take a picture when
Voiceover is on because sighted people don’t know you have to double tap a
button when Voiceover is active, they tap the Take Picture button a few times
until I tell them that doesn’t work. I don’t often turn on the screen curtain,
but when I do and forget I usually get the comment “Hmm, your phone is off” or
“your screen doesn’t work”.
I guaranty that if you went to a mall and did a random survey of 500 sighted
people where you handed them an iPhone with Voiceover and the screen curtain on
and asked them the simple question whether they can tell you the time which is
displayed on the phone that none of them could. You might of course get lucky
and somebody may have a blind friend or family member who may have told them
about the screen curtain feature which does not exist for sighted people and is
completely a foreign concept for them.

anything about the Screen Curtain?, but each to their own! LOL!

Carolyn,

How could they turn off Screen Curtain? They haven't a clue, and there is
nothing to see.
Wondering the very same thing. Given that a sighted person will use the screen
to do what we do using the screen reader, how could they do it without anything
to see?

2019-06-18 Thread janet gross
Sieghard,
Ok, I just seen this message, and I feel I should reply just one more time
regarding this card issue. What I said was I know they, meaning Arlene and
Wayne, were not talking about Apple pay. I did not say I wasn’t talking about
Apple pay. Once again the whole point was regarding the picker, and that is
what I was trying to help them with.
PS, this is my last comment on this.

Hello Janet,

You say you were not talking about adding a card to Apple Pay, but you wrote “I
ask this because I just added my credit card to Apple Pay”
Sorry if I don’t know you mean one thing when you write another.
In any case, Mark already provided the correct information by explaining how
some people can’t update this information on their device but must do so by
logging in to the Apple Id website. I am also part of that group because I have
no option to update my card’s expiry date or card verification code on my
iPhone 8, the information is greyed out.

Yes, I know they are not adding or changing Apple pay. The picker in changing
expiration and security codes for credit cards have changed in iOS 12, and that
is what I was talking about, and I am surprised if you don’t know this.

They are not trying to add their card to Apple Pay, they want to update the
expiry date and card verification code for the card on file. I took a quick
look on my iPhone and didn’t see it as obvious although I am sure it can be
done, but usually I do this on my PC with Jaws by going to
http://AppleID.apple.com, then I sign in and I have never had an issue there.
But, as I said, I am sure Apple Accessibility can walk them through it and if
necessary even do screen sharing with them.

What phone are you using? I ask this because I just added my credit card to

expiration date and the 3 number security code from the card, after the camera

Our credit card was just updated. the card number is the same, though the
experation date and 3 digit code is different. No matter what Wayne does there
doesn't seem anyway to up date those numbers, and he was in the update area.
Either the numbers are dimmed and then just where you think you could even add
another card where it says okay, it won't go to where you could input another
card, it just won't go. You can't expand and use the combo boxes. He tried 3
different screen readers, when he was trying to update the card on the
computer, and we were logged into our account. So it's rather like going in
circles and we've done it on the computer andphone several times over, so I
hope someone knows how to change or edit and type in the new experation date
and the 3 digit code. Thank you for the help with this.

oh, ok. I have never heard of this but do understand it. I hope it will work
for you and if so can you let me know how to do it?
Thanks, Dave

Thank you Dave, I do understand that being near enough for the WIFI network to
show automatically and then joining it is a simple way to add a network.
However, the option to manually enter the information (network name and
password) is available on other devices and if it is available on the IPhone I
would really prefer to use it in this specific instance.

RE: will be sending back my Logitech keyboard

2019-06-18 Thread Merv Keck
You should consider the Logitech K480. It is easy to pair. Big and heavy
compared to the 780. Has no dongle. Also has no numeric keypad if you want one
of those. But if you don't need a numeric keypad it is only about $22 and can
be used on 3 devices. I use mine with the iPhone, iPad Pro, and Apple TV.

Subject: will be sending back my logitech keyboard

Hi to all. I just tried out my new wireless/ bluetooth keyboard and it
doesn't work at all. I turned on the switch and I plugged in my USB dongle. I
got nothing at all. I then unplugged my dongle and tried to pair it to my
iPhone via bluetooth, and nothing again. I bought this keyboard to help me
with typing on my iPhone. I'm going to talk to apple because I think my phone
is broken. I went into settings and tried to get my phone to where I don't
have to keep typing in my passcode everytime my phone locks itself and even
though I typed in my passcode and changed the setting to off, it didn't take.
If it weren't for the fact that I need a phone to make and receive calls, I'd
sell it for whatever money I could get. The only good thing about my phone is
the quality of phone calls. I like that very much.

Carolyn,

My wife has the Otticon hearing aids and she pairs it through the accessibility
settings. Go to settings, general, accessibility, MFI hearing device. Click on
Otticon1. There should be a button that shows up to pair. You need to do the
left and right aids separately.

Hope this helps.

Carolyn, what I'm getting ready to tell you may not work, in fact, you may

have already tried it already. Hardware and software can be strange and not

work, so here's what I had to do with something a bit more simpler, having

to do with a bluetooth keyboard. But I could not get that thing to pare and

it was setting right in the bluetooth devices. So I turned the bluetooth

keyboard off, and I decided to tell the iphone to forget about the device.

then I turned the bluetooth on the iphone, off and then back on. and then I

turned the bluetooth keyboard back on, and the iphone was ready to pare. It

gave me a code to type in on the bluetooth keyboard, and I typed it in, and

hit enter and I was done. It began working perfectly then. Give that a try,

and if that doesn't work I'll see what I could do to come up with something

else. I hope it works for you.

Carolyn, turning bluetooth off and back on or restarting the phone might not
work. Even the instructions I gave you, might not work. If you tried them and
they didn't work, then unless I come up with something else before you go to
the audiologist, hopefully they could solve it. If you do try the instructions,
I hope they work.

I've talked to them about it too - done everything suggested - going to

Hi Wayne,

Thats a great suggestion. I forgot to mention that to Carolyn. I often have
to do this when I cannot get something paired.

I put in new batteries. It must have paired with them, named them Oticon,

said zero percent, but I can't get Bluetooth connected with my aids either

in Bluetooth or in MFI. I am afraid I'm going to have to end up going to the

audiologists - most inconvenient at this particular time in my life. Thanks

morning she tried on a whim and it went off. However, during the time she
was having trouble because she had put on assisted touch I began trying to
figure out how to make a new gesture for her in assistive touch. When I
called Apple Accessibility about the problem, after I failed myself to
help, they told me assistive touch is not hooked (wrong word, but not sure
what the word is, to VO. It didn't make sense to me because people who are
blind sometimes have difficulty with their hands just like sighted people.
They told me there was no way to help the situation, but when I pointed
out the problem she said she would absolutely put the problem of assistive
touch to the engineers. So, no way of knowing if there may be a solution,
but at least they are looking into it. The rotor and the twist is another
really hard gesture to do for people with bad hands, shaking or wrist
problems. I myself can do it, but I cannot turn back. I have to go
completely through my rotor settings after using one to find a previous
one. No understanding of why. My wrist just won't go left. Anyway, if they
work on this problem and hook the answer to VO I think it can only make
the iPhone experience even better for more people.

If you cannot double tap with two fingers because of a tremor disorder,

Maybe, just maybe, with iOS 13 Apple will finally allow switch controls

I've complained about this from day one as some of our clients cannot use

 have to have VoiceOver.

Well, I discovered this camera app that will let Siri take a picture with voice
command. It seems to be a very accessible app.

Just go to settings and enable the Siri shortcut, then you can tell Siri to

The app has very good ratings.

Hi all,

Which apps are you comfortable using to read a credit/debit card? For
example, is Seeing AI safe to use for this task?

Thank You,

RE: will be sending back my logitech keyboard

2019-06-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I should also mention that if you send back your Logitech keyboard and buy a
different Bluetooth keyboard you still have to pair it just the same, all
Bluetooth keyboards need to be first put in pairing mode, then you have to
double tap on them in the list of Bluetooth devices on your phone and then
enter the pairing code.
Some Bluetooth keyboards have a little recessed button you have to press to put
it in pairing mode, some maybe have a power button which you have to push and
hold for 3 or 5 seconds before it goes into pairing mode or, as the Logitech
K780, you have to press and hold one of the device selection keys, F1, F2 or
F3 for about 5 seconds.
The nice thing about the K780 and I think just about all other Bluetooth
keyboards is that it has a physical on/off slider switch (on the K780 it’s on
the right side) which makes it easy to know whether they keyboard is on or off
and if you plan to bring it with you in a backpack it’s virtually impossible
for the keyboard to turn itself on. My first Apple Wireless keyboard had a push
button on the side and it would constantly get pushed in the backpack and I
basically had to unscrew the battery compartment and reverse one battery if I
didn’t want that to happen.

Since Joshua said his Logitech has a USB dongle I assume it might be the K780
which I also have, in fact, I have it paired to my laptop and my iPhone via
Bluetooth and I am currently typing this email on it.
I highly doubt there is anything wrong with either his iPhone or the keyboard
and that it is at this point user error, sorry Joshua, but if you could look up
the model and post a message here with that information some of us could
probably help you more. I believe you said you bought the keyboard from Amazon
which means you would have received an order confirmation email and the exact
model number would definitely be in that email.
The K780 is a fantastic keyboard, I personally don’t use the USB dongle since
my laptop has Bluetooth and I find the connection works better than with the
USB Dongle.
I also described before how to pair this keyboard, the only thing I would add
to Richard “it just pairs” statement is that once it shows up in your list of
Bluetooth devices and you double tap on it you have to enter a pairing code, I
think it is 6 digits, on the keyboard. If it is the K780 then it has a numeric
pad and that makes it very easy to enter the code which you can read on your
iPhone with Voiceover.
I mean no offense, but I see a bit of a similarity here with when you first
received your iPhone and you were so frustrated by the fact you couldn’t enter
the passcode that you wanted to send it back a day or two later. Now you can’t
pair your keyboard right away maybe assuming it should magically pair without
following the correct procedure and it’s a bit the same thing, all I can say is
just slow down, take a deep breath and then provide the model and ask for help
if you can’t figure it out from information that is available online. I think
when I once tried the USB dongle I had to go through the pairing process as
well so it’s not like Logitech wireless USB keyboards which are prepared with
the dongle you get and which simply work after you plug the dongle into a
computer. I don’t want to boast or sound superior, but I have been using iOS
devices for 10 years and I almost could guaranty that there is nothing wrong
with the product and that those who know the steps including myself could pair
this to your phone in less than 30 seconds.
As for not having to enter a passcode, do you want to turn off the passcode
permanently or do you just want to set it so you only have to enter it if, for
example, you haven’t unlocked your phone for more than a certain time? I am
actually not sure if this can be done. I do see an option under Settings >
Touch Id and Passcode (I have an iPhone 8 so if you have an XR this would most
likely be called Face Id and Passcode) that says “Require Passcode” and it says
“Immediately”. If I tap on this the only option given is “Immediately”, so not
sure about the purpose of this. I do, however, have credit cards added to my
phone so I can use it to make Apple Pay payments in stores and I assume it is
possible that “Immediately” is the only option because of this.
In any case, I can’t remember if you have an iPhone 8 which has Touch Id or an
XR or XS which has Face Id, but either way if you could get help to set up
either method correctly you can easily and quickly unlock your iPhone without
having to enter your passcode at least most of the time. The only time you
would have to enter a passcode is if you reboot/turn off your phone, if you
haven’t used it for whatever length of time it is where a passcode is required

Of course if security is not a concern you could simply disable the passcode
requirement and then you simply double tap where it says “Press Home to Unlock”.

2019-06-18 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Hi to all. I just tried out my new wireless/ bluetooth keyboard
and it doesn't work at all. I turned on the switch and I plugged in
my USB dongle. I got nothing at all. I then unplugged my dongle and
tried to pair it to my iPhone via bluetooth, and nothing again. I
bought this keyboard to help me with typing on my iPhone. I'm going
to talk to apple because I think my phone is broken. I went into
settings and tried to get my phone to where I don't have to keep
typing in my passcode everytime my phone locks itself and even though
I typed in my passcode and changed the setting to off, it didn't take.
If it weren't for the fact that I need a phone to make and receive
calls, I'd sell it for whatever money I could get. The only good
thing about my phone is the quality of phone calls. I like that very
much.

Reading pdf

2019-06-18 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
If I want to strip text from a web page on my iPhone XS iOS 12.3, it seems I
can only do so in a really roundabout way: can anyone suggest anything quicker?
I open the web page, double tap the Share button, double tap on Save PDF to
Books, then once in Books, I double tap on Share and then email a copy to
myself and then open the Mail app. Open the attachment in the email, double tap
the Share button and at long last I get the option to open in Voice Dream
Reader! Whew! Now I can OCR and export the text into Pages or Voice Dream
Writer in order to edit it!
Is this really the only way to get text from a web page into plain text format?
Thanks
Harry
