Mark on Latest Commercial Release of iOS 13 Using iPhone 8 Plus

2019-10-04 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

Well, quite unexpectedly, I updated my 8 Plus to the latest version of iOS
13, today. This is to say, I thought the system would ask me to agree to
the terms of service, before updating but, for the first time in my history
with the company, it did not. Instead, it went right ahead and updated
then, after rebooting, it asked if I agreed to the terms of service (smile).
I'm not blaming apple, too much, after all, I freely entered my phone's pass
code which permitted the update.

Be that as it may, I must say that I have no major problems with the latest
commercial release version of iOS 13. I am careful to mention that I am
referring to the commercial release because I am running the latest iPad OS
beta on my iPad Pro.

After updating, I have been trying to reproduce many of the issues I've read
about here on the list. I am happy and surprised to report that I cannot
reproduce any of them on my 8 Plus. This is to say, call routing is
performing as expected. Call waiting and all things call related are
working just fine. Try as I may, I have not yet managed to lose VoiceOver
or any hap tic feedback before, during, or after making any calls, even
those on Face Time.

Mind you I've only had iOS 13 on my 8 plus for 1 days so who knows what
tomorrow may bring but, for now, all of my go-to apps, such as Nearby
Explorer, Over Drive, all of my banking apps, Twitter, and all of the native
apps appear to be working as expected.

The only annoying thing I have noticed, so far, is that when typing in a
contact, when composing a text message, VoiceOver does not read the label
associated with a particular number. I will file a bug report on this,
tomorrow.

Steps to reproduce:

1.
>From within the messages app, compose a new message.

2.
Place focus in the, "To" field.

3.
Type in the first few letters of a contact's name such as "dav" for the name
"David." Now in previous versions of the OS, VoiceOver would say something
like, "David Johnson, Mobile." In this release, it merely says, "David
Johnson, 800-555-1212." Which may or may not be David's mobile number.

As for the second thing I have noticed is that now, thanks to iOS 13 and
Watch OS 6, my seemless VoiceOver audio switching between the watch and the
phone no longer works on my Plantronics Voyager Edge. At least, I cannot
get it to work. I can get audio from either device but no longer does it do
so automatically.Thanks Apple.

If anyone out there has got this working, please let me know how you
accomplished it.

Okay, that's all for now.

In the Journey,

Mark.

I'd suggest you use whichever headphones give you the best sound without much
bleed that could disturb others on the plane.

Make sure you know how to turn on airplane mode which is most easily accessed
by opening control center by placing focus on the status bar and doing a 3
finger swipe up.

I'd also recommend that you download the Audible books you plan to read to your
device before leaving home.

RE: Details needed on purchasing an Audible book with a credit using the app

2019-10-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

I guess for people who really try to do everything on their phone this may
sound like a good idea. I still prefer to use my PC, go to Audible.ca and do my
searching, adding to the wishlist and so on. I find it much easier, faster and
more efficient using Jaws and Chrome.

Sieghard,

You cannot check your wish list with the Audible app based on my experience and
what Audible Support told me when I asked this question on the phone the other
day. I find that extremely backwards on their part. It would seem if they want
you to purchase content using the app and available credits, that the first
thing they should do is give you access with the app to your wish list where
you store the titles you want to buy.

This sounds pretty complicated and you have to know exactly what book you want
if you have to search for it or did I miss anything here, e.g. can I for
example see what's in my wishlist and add it using a credit?

Mary: Thanks very much. I have been wondering how to do this as well.
I have looked in the Discover and other tabs in the Audible app, but didn't
think to do a search from the My Library tab. One would think that they would
have told us more about how to use this feature, oh well.

Do you have folders on the top row of your home screen. If you have folders it

the rotor to vertical and then flick up and you should be in the status bar.

Yes, that's the status bar. I look for the speaker hole at the top of

RE: Iphone On Airline

2019-10-04 Thread Alan Lemly
I'd suggest you use whichever headphones give you the best sound without much
bleed that could disturb others on the plane.

Make sure you know how to turn on airplane mode which is most easily accessed
by opening control center by placing focus on the status bar and doing a 3
finger swipe up.

I'd also recommend that you download the Audible books you plan to read to your
device before leaving home.

Enjoy your trip to Orlando.

Sorry, what I meant is the gesture you can now create to go to the status bar
in voice over, not using vertical navigation.

Do you have folders on the top row of your home screen. If you have folders it
will not go up to the status bar when you use vertical navigation. If you have
icon on the left and right then put your focus on one of them and then change
the rotor to vertical and then flick up and you should be in the status bar.

I have had some success with this by creating a Voice Over gesture to go to the

It works on the 11 Pro, 10S and 8 to my knowledge. The trick is you have to
be in the top row of icons for it to work.

I have used my Beats Solo3 headphones on planes with no problem.
While they are not noise canceling, they cover the entire ear,
blocking out the noise from the engines. Be sure to use airplane
mode. While some airlines claim to offer Wi-Fi, I have found the
speeds really slow and don’t count on using it. Instead, I load all
different kinds of music on the phone for times when I am not
interested in reading.

I don't know of any sort of rules that ban aftershocks on aircraft,
that would be odd but airlines do so love weird rules. However, I'd

Re: Watch muted... but still ringing?

2019-10-04 Thread Shai
Hello,
It appears that now the only means of muting the watch so that it does
not ring out loud is to use the watch app and navigate to phone and
double tap. Once you navigate to phone, the sound can be turned off
from there.
Muting the watch via the control center only mutes charging sounds and
some VoiceOver sounds such as the clicks that occurs when entering
your passcode.

Re: [EXTERNAL] Re: Accessible guitar tuning app?

2019-10-04 Thread Richard Turner
Here is information from the help section of the Talking Tuner app.
HotPaw Productions Talking Tuner
HotPaw Talking Tuner is a hands-off, sound-activated, talking musical
instrument tuner. It talks to tell you if you are in tune or not, so you dont
even have to look at it. Talking Tuner uses built-in speech synthesis, and thus
does not require that VoiceOver be enabled.
I received a request to develop an iPhone app which could help a
vision-challenged individual tune their musical instrument. This is the result.
Talking Tuner can assist someone to tune a musical instrument without having to
look at or touch their iPhone's display.
With the Auto-Speak switch turned on, Talking Tuner will listen for a note to
be played, and then, after waiting for the end of the sound (so as not to talk
over it), will speak the note name, and how many cents sharp or flat the end of
the note is estimated to be.
Using headphones may help make it easier to hear what this app is saying while
tuning. Make sure to turn the volume up high enough to hear it.
The pitch estimation algorithm works best for notes

between 2 octaves below Middle-C to 2 octaves above Middle-C. It may not work
as well for very low notes, very high notes, or with any background noise,
harmony, or accompaniment present. The default frequency resolution is about +3
cents (3/100ths of the pitch difference between semitones). 100 cents is the
frequency difference between semitones. 50 cents is halfway between notes, or
pretty much way out of tune. 1 cent represents a tiny 0.058% frequency
difference.
The Volume Threshold slider in Talking Tuner sets the sensitivity. Higher
numbers will require a louder sound
before the app starts to estimate the pitch. 3.0 is the default volume setting.
There is a setting available (for Talking Tuner inside the ios Settings app)
for higher resolution spoken frequency reporting (+-2 cents and +-1 cent).
However, note that the response time and delay may be slower at these higher
resolutions. There is also a setting available to configure the Concert A
reference frequency, which has a default value of 440.0 Hz.

Maybe try the Twitterrific app until the scrolling issue improves. Again, try

But, it is nice to be able to just do the app switcher.
I do not have a better way at this point.

RE: Question about Rotor.

2019-10-04 Thread Carolyn Arnold
Thanks. That explanation is very helpful

Subject: RE: Question about Rotor.

No, you can't get rid of the rotor, but you can either use it or not.
It's like the 2-finger double tap or, for that matter, any gesture, you can't
get rid of the 2-finger double tap to answer or hang up a call or to start or
pause playback, but you can use it or not use it.
Turning the rotor clockwise or counter-clockwise is simply a way to get to
certain options faster.
Think of it as a continuous dial on a device, let's say to keep it simple, you
have a washing machine with a knob and you can turn the knob either clockwise
or counter-clockwise. Let's further assume there are 12 washing programs on the
dial, each at a position of the hour, e.g. let's say 12 o'clock is "Normal", 1
o'clock is "Permanent Press, 2 o'clock is Delicates etc. Let's further assume
10 o'clock is for Wool and 11 o'clock for Silk.
Now, if you want Delicates you would turn your knob clockwise to the 2 o'clock
position, if you wanted Silk you can continue to turn it all the way around to
11 o'clock, or you can turn it back counter-clockwise to 11 o'clock which would
be much faster if you are either on the 12 o'clock position (just one click
back) or even if you are on the 1, 2, 3 or 4 o'clock positions.
Now, let's assume your rotor is set to "Characters, if you turn it clockwise
you get Words, Links, Headings, Buttons, Volume, Speed etc.
So, if you want to go from Characters to Volume, you have to turn the rotor
clockwise, put 2 fingers on the screen and given them a bit of a twist, you
will hear "Words", lift them up and do it again, you get Links, then you do it
again and you get headings, then buttons and finally you get to Volume.
Now you can flick up or down with one finger to change the volume. If you want
to read word by word in an email or text message, turn the rotor until you get
to words, then flick down with one finger and Voiceover reads word by word
going forward, if you want to go back a few words, flick up a few times. If
you get to a word which you want to spell letter by letter, you have to turn
the rotor to the left or counter-clockwise because the Characters option is
before Words, put 2 fingers on the screen and give them a bit of a twist, but
as if you were turning a knob counter-clockwise, Voiceover will say
"Characters", then you can flick down with one finger and instead of reading
the entire word Voiceover will read character by vcharacter.
If you are on a website you can turn the rotor to heading and then if you flick
down Voiceover will jump from heading to heading just as if you were to push
the letter "h" on the keyboard for most screenreaders.
You can always go into Voiceover Settings and to the practice area and
practice turning the rotor. The unfortunate part is that in iOS 13 there is a
fair bit of inconsistency in the rotor. For example, I was reading an email
with a table and I turned the rotor to the left to "Rows" which allows you to
go down the table row by row I fyou flick down. In this case the table had
columns for Description, item number, quantity ordered and price. If you are on
the description column and go to rows and then flick down it goes down the
table in that column, if I flick right it goes across the row to item number,
quantity and price. Then if I flick left back to description that is fine, but
now if I want to go down another row the rotor has lost it's position and I
have to first turn it back to rows and it sometimes drives me crazy how
inconsistent that is. I think in cases where you are in an email the rotor
should simply stay where I put it and not revert to some default which requires
me to continuously put it back to where I want it.
The point is, however, that you don't have to dismiss the rotor or anything
like that, it's like on a keyboard, if I use the arrow keys to arrow around a
document and I then want to write something I simply take my hands off the
arrow keys and start typing, I don't have to do anything to get rid of the
arrow keys and similarly with the rotor you just don't turn it if you don't
want to.

Best regards,
Sieghard

in Audible unless I go to the app switcher and re-open it from the app
switcher. Do other people have this problem? If not, any suggestions for how to
get it to work right on initially opening it?
Thanks in advance, Keith

RE: Details needed on purchasing an Audible book with a credit using the app

2019-10-04 Thread Alan Lemly

One would think that they would
have told us more about how to use this feature, oh well.

from the United States public library system, is now as VoiceOver
accessible, in iOS 13, as it is in iOS 12 and earlier.

Re: Problem continuously scrolling in native Twitter app

2019-10-04 Thread Christina
The twitter app isn’t behaving that way at all for me. It just continuously
scrolls down. Make sure you have the latest Twitter app because they just
updated it a day or 2 ago. One other idea is to make sure your wifi data or
data signal is strong. Also try rebooting your phone. FYI, I’m running iOS
13.1.2, on an iPhone 11 and my Twitter app is up to date.

Free audible originals was Details needed on purchasing an Audible book with a credit using the app

2019-10-04 Thread Christina
There was an Audible app update a couple of days ago. Last night I wanted to
see what the free audible originals are for October. I can’t find them
anywhere. The originals tab has been replaced with a channels tab. I looked and
looked and I can’t find them. I did find an Audible Originals heading under the
discover tab, but they didn’t seem to be free. Does anyone know where to find
the free audible originals on the app?

Thanks

When I find a title I'm interested in and double tap on it to get

I'm curious what others are experiencing with using the app and

Thanks in advance for any details you can share.

Hi, It’s actually pretty awesome and it’s not complicated at all. The app has a
home tab as well as a discover tab to poke around at books. It’s not as robust
as the website, but it’s pretty good. There is a from my wish list section, but
I haven’t explored that very much to see if it’s my actual wish list or a mix
of books I added and or suggestions of books based on my wish list. Overall
it’s really great to be able to get audible books with a credit right through
the app.

How do you delete audible books in your library once you have finished reading
them? I went to device and tried to select the book and pressing delete button
but that doesn't seem to work. Would someone tell me how because I don't even
find an edit button.

RE: Details needed on purchasing an Audible book with a credit using the app

2019-10-04 Thread Alan Lemly
Mary,

Thanks so much for the detailed instructions. When I tried them with no change
in my results, I realized it was time to sign out of my account to see if that
made a difference. After signing in again, everything is now working as you
described. I've got to get in a better habit of signing out of my apps more
often because this isn't the first time signing out and in again has corrected
an app issue.

Alan

Hi Alan,

Open the Audible app. Switch to my library if it’s not already there. Make sure
that all or cloud is checked, rather than “on device“. Then do a search for the
book that you want. It should show up in the results that follow, but just not
in your library. Double tap on the title. The screen that opens will have
things like sample on it. It will also tell you how many credits you have. If
you move past that, you will see a button that says something like add to
library for one credit. If you double tap that, you’re good to go.

Mary

latest Audible version and my iPhone 8 running iOS 12.4.1. When I find a title
I'm interested in and double tap on it to get details about the book, I get a
button to sample now and a publisher's summary but nothing about buying it with
a credit. I do get an option to remove it from my wish list for titles I've
placed there.

I'm curious what others are experiencing with using the app and buying with a
credit. Voiceover just doesn't seem to offer me the control button I need to do
this.

Thanks in advance for any details you can share.

Re: Details needed on purchasing an Audible book with a credit using the app

2019-10-04 Thread Mary Otten
To be honest, I have a tried the Discover tab. If I just want to browse, I tend
to use the Audible site itself. So my only experience buying with a credit from
within the app has been doing a search, either for an author I’d like to see if
they have anything I haven’t read, or a book that I know I want. So it is
entirely possible that you can do what you are saying regarding the wish list
etc. The key is to find a way to get the page for the book you want up. Once
you have that book up, you should find the ability to purchase and add to your
library with one credit. But yes, I do think they should’ve put out more
information as to how this can be done, rather than leaving it up to folks to
just discover it.

RE: Setting up an activity in iOS 13

2019-10-04 Thread Cristobal Muñoz
Yup. A few times I’ve had an issue where I swear I was doing everything right
or just couldn’t figure something out and finally ended up calling the
accessibility line. I did the share screen thing with them and walking through
it, the Apple rep pointed out a step that I was missing or in a couple of
instances, was able to document an actual bug.

It doesn’t’ happen very often that I call them, but they are after all there
for a reason.

This sounds like an interesting and useful feature. I look forward to finally
upgrading to 13.X once some of those bugs get addressed.

Maybe try Apple Accessibility and see if they can figure out why it’s not

RE: Details needed on purchasing an Audible book with a credit using the app

2019-10-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
This sounds pretty complicated and you have to know exactly what book you want
if you have to search for it or did I miss anything here, e.g. can I for
example see what's in my wishlist and add it using a credit?

I have looked in the Discover and other tabs in the Audible app, but didn't

RE: Question about Rotor.

2019-10-04 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The point is, however, that you don't have to dismiss the rotor or anything
like that, it's like on a keyboard, if I use the arrow keys to arrow around a
document and I then want to write something I simply take my hands off the
arrow keys and start typing, I don't have to do anything to get rid of the
arrow keys and similarly with the rotor you just don't turn it if you don't
want to.

Best regards,
Sieghard

if I want it, clockwise knob so that it works for me?

When you want it you turn the figurative knob, i.e. you make a sort of turning
gesture with two fingers on the screen a bit apart, you can turn clockwise or
counter-clockwise. If you don't want to change anything in the rotor, don't
turn it.

2019-10-04 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Alan,
Open the Audible app.

Re: Setting up an activity in iOS 13

2019-10-04 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Anna,
Yes, I am running 13.1.2. And I did go back and make sure that the activity was
set how I wanted it. I have tried all sorts of ways to get it to be activated.
I have turned my rotor to activity, open the mail, and manually flip to
activity one. I have flick to activity one prior to opening mail. I have left
things completely alone and opened mail. It just never works. I’m really
disappointed, because for me, this was one of the main things I really was
looking forward to with the new iOS. That and enhanced shortcuts and HomePod

So, as far as my quick test goes, it works as advertised.

Hi List,

A couple of weeks ago, I received more than one email from Audible touting a
new feature allowing one to purchase new Audible books using their app and an
account credit. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to do this using the
latest Audible version and my iPhone 8 running iOS 12.4.1.

When you want it you turn the figurative knob, i.e. you make a sort of turning
gesture with two fingers on the screen a bit apart, you can turn clockwise or
counter-clockwise. If you don't want to change anything in the rotor, don't
turn it.

Hi Carolyn,

the rotor is a way to choose how to navigate. Pretend there's a knob between
two fingers and twist the knob left or right to move through the choices. When
you find the one you want, flick up or down to move backward or forward by that
element. So to move by headings, you would turn the rotor to headings and then
flick down to go to the next one or up to go to the previous one.

HTH,
Anna

I just did a search and talking tuner is still available by HotPaw Productions.
With it you play a string and it will verbally announce the note and whether
its sharp or flat.

I find Libby impossible to use with any reliability and they even state it is
not accessible with screen readers. But I use the Overdrive app and love it. At

and have been using it ever since. I can also easily download books to my

Yeah, in general, I didn't ever find the VoiceOver Overdrive experience on iOS
to be all that great be it with e or audiobooks.
In the sense that things were labeled and such, sure I suppose, but as far as
the user experience... It's not my first or second or third choice to consume
reading material on my iPhone.

Hi Mark,
I gave a really serious look at the libby app and also the OverDrive app a
while back, maybe even before iOS 12. It might’ve been iOS 11. I really really
couldn’t get it to work well, either one of them. I wanted to borrow print
ebooks, not audiobooks. With the OverDrive app, are you using the print side or
the Audible side? Do you have books sent to your Kindle app?
Or are you able to find them and read them efficiently within the overdrive
app? I just remember having all kinds of problems with anything having to do
with getting library books.

RE: Question about Rotor.

2019-10-04 Thread Tom Rash
This gesture is not hard, but is a bit confusing until you do it. Think of it
as putting two fingers on the screen and moving one up and one down
simultaneously.

HTH,
Anna

RE: Accessible guitar tuning app?

2019-10-04 Thread Robert Wright
I just did a search and talking tuner is still available by HotPaw Productions.
With it you play a string and it will verbally announce the note and whether
its sharp or flat.

Re: Problem continuously scrolling in native Twitter app

2019-10-04 Thread Kathy Brandt
I go to see latest tweets, and flick from one tweet to the next. At the bottom
of the screen, just above compose tweet, it says see new tweets. If I were to
want to continue reading beneath that last tweet, I can’t, because if I double
tap on see new tweets, the screen jumps back to the top. I want to see new
tweets only when I want to see new tweets; I should be able to read through 700
if that’s what I want to do before seeing new ones if it’s going to send me
back to the top of the display and make me start over. In the center of the
screen I was advised at one point here to place a finger briefly in the middle
of the screen, and then flick, which would let me read more tweets, and for a
while in past updates there was indeed a show more tweets button, and below
that, tweets I presume from even much earlier. In any case, if I double tapped
on show more tweets, I was not sent back to the top of the screen. I hope this
clarifies things.
