Re: Annoying Facebook App Issue and a VoiceOver Question

2019-11-08 Thread Donna
Hi,

I may have accidently happened upon the setting that will, hopefully stop this
very annoying Facebook bug or whatever you want to call it. I haven’t had a
chance to confirm my finding. Go to settings, contacts, turn off Find contacts
in other apps. If this doesn’t work..My next observation is that the
interrupting contact name pop-ups is a group setting. I don’t experience the
name suggestion, if I’m replying to a friends post on my news feed or community
pages. To keep from pulling out my hair, I use Notes or another app to write a
comment, I then copy & paste on Facebook.

Re: Aggravating Issue with Messaging

Hi,

When sending a message to your friend, start a new message thread using only
her phone number & a new thread, in which you use only her email address. Not
creating two different message threads can cause text messages to fail to send.

Re: Glucose meters with voiceover

The other CGM meter is the Dexcom 6. I did know a totally blind man who had
the Dexcom 5 and it was accessible with the iPhone.

Actually, The Prodigy meter is an independent deal, it has nothing to do
with the iPhone or voiceover. There are two systems which work with
voiceover through an app. Both of them are continuous monitoring systems.
Are you looking for a continuous monitoring system that is a CGM? Or are you
looking for a glucose meter where you do the typical stick your finger and
get your immediate reading? If you’re looking for the latter, then The
Prodigy is the one you want. If you need continuous glucose monitoring, then
you have the freestyle libre, which has an app, or Another one, the name of
which escapes me now. It’s more expensive. Offers more features. I want to
say decks C om. They have the G5, and I think the newest one is the G6. If
you do not need, or your doctor won’t sign off on a continuous glucose
monitoring system, then as far as I am aware, The Prodigy is the only one.
And it has nothing whatsoever to do with iPhones or voiceover or whatever.

Hi. I am trying to find a text version of the Niv version that does not have
the footnotes and references in it. So far all of the versions that I have
found have the footnotes and references right in the middle of the chapter and
the verses which is hard to find out where you left off to read the next
verses. Thanks much.

Hi Folks,

Not sure if this thread has come through the
list yet. Has anyone had their SIRI voice
change with the advent of the 13.2.2 update?

As of that update, I no longer have Samantha as

I know I didn’t make this change, unless my

Is this a permanent thing, or will this happen again with further updates?

I know, it’s a silly question, and no, I am
not expecting an answer, but it’s just weird,
as other updates have not done this to me, and
while I’m not worried, unless I can’t change
it, it does bother me if I’m going to have
faith that Apple’s updates will actually fix
things, instead of breaking them.

Re: how to add items to cart with Uber Eats

2019-11-08 Thread 'Karen Delzer' via VIPhone
All I can say is, make certain that the restaurant you pick is
really one that is in service. We had that trouble just recently. We
tried and tried to get something from El Pollo Loco, but no matter
what we tried, it wouldn't work. Eventually, (don't know why we
didn't see this), but the restaurant name was dimmed, and apparently
not in service. As soon as we picked another restaurant, we had no trouble.

Re: Glucose meters with voiceover

2019-11-08 Thread Mary Otten
Actually, The Prodigy meter is an independent deal, it has nothing to do with
the iPhone or voiceover. There are two systems which work with voiceover
through an app. Both of them are continuous monitoring systems. Are you looking
for a continuous monitoring system that is a CGM? Or are you looking for a
glucose meter where you do the typical stick your finger and get your immediate
reading? If you’re looking for the latter, then The Prodigy is the one you
want. If you need continuous glucose monitoring, then you have the freestyle
libre, which has an app, or Another one, the name of which escapes me now. It’s
more expensive. Offers more features. I want to say decks C om. They have the
G5, and I think the newest one is the G6. If you do not need, or your doctor
won’t sign off on a continuous glucose monitoring system, then as far as I am
aware, The Prodigy is the only one. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with
iPhones or voiceover or whatever.

Re: Another Weird Pronunciation Issue

2019-11-08 Thread Richard Turner
Yes. The fix until someone gets their act together, is to go into the VoiceOver
Speech, pronunciations and add gun, the word, which US English voices say g u
n, and enter the substitution gunn, which has two n's.
I just did that and now gun is said correctly.
This for sure started with iOS 13.

Yes, it does, have used it myself.
Just hold your phone near the area on the faregate where you normally tap your
card and authorize with Touch Id (or Face Id if you have an iPhone X or later).
Your payment method will be preauthorized, but nothing will be charged until
you arrive at your destination and tap out. At that point the correct fare will
be calculated and it is then charged to your card via Apple Pay.

Hi. I am trying to find a text version of the Niv version that does not have
the footnotes and references in it. So far all of the versions that I have
found have the footnotes and references right in the middle of the chapter and
the verses which is hard to find out where you left off to read the next
verses. Thanks much.

Not sure if this thread has come through the list yet. Has anyone had their

As of that update, I no longer have Samantha as my SIRI voice, I have an

I know I didn’t make this change, unless my senility has finally caught up with

Is this a permanent thing, or will this happen again with further updates?

Question about scheduling an event

2019-11-08 Thread Vicki W.
Good Afternoon,

I have been trying to set up a reminder both through my calendar and
Fantastical. I finally switched from the Gmail calendar to the home calendar
and was able to set up the event through Fantastical, but not a reminder.

Well, when the event happened, which is a recurring event, I get an alert from
both my calendar and Fantastical at the same time. Can I delete it in my
calendar, which I never set up, and just leave it in Fantastical or will that
wipe out both of them?

I never could set up the reminder but I'm fairly certain that is an IOS issue
because it only started after the upgrade.

Thank you.

Vicki

Good thing I uninstalled Twitterrific and went back to the native app! I found
outreading the Help info, that only for 6months, one is able to use the client
if purchased when the 5.7 version was out, without having to subscribeanew.
That’s why I gave up on it, though I’ll miss some of itsfeatures!

RE: Apple Pay for Sky Ticket Train?

Hi thanks for sharing this information. I live here in Surrey BC and didn’t
know the answer thanks again for sharing the answer.

Generally speaking, in the footer of each list message is the link to

2019-11-08 Thread alia robinson
I’m not trying to start something or be rude, but how did you get here if you
don’t know how you joined, and the info is at the end of every message sent to
this list. all you have to do is replace subscribe in the address where it says
unsubscribe, or you could search googlegroups.

When I go to the section you describe, I see a lot of random shortcuts, but not
actually a list of apps. For example, I know Overcast works with it, but it is

And are all of these Voiceover accessible? How about that volume bar (item 7),
how would one interact with this using Voiceover? Same applies to the
screenshot of a webpage (item 13) where a sighted person can easily tap on the
thumbnail of the screen shot and then select full page to expand the screenshot
to the entire page not just what is visible on the screen? I'd love to be able
to use it.

Subject: iOS 13.2: The 13 best hidden iPhone and iPad features we can find, cNet

Hello All,

Although some of these features have already been discussed, there are a couple
that I absolutely love, including the automatic document scanning feature which
works beautifully with VoiceOver in terms of guiding a blind person in lining
up the camera for the automatic scan. While I'm not certain how much use a
totally blind person can benefit from this feature, low vision VoiceOver users
will definitely find the Files App auto-document scanning feature a true
treasure.

iOS 13.2: The 13 best hidden iPhone and iPad features we can find We combed
through the iPhone 11 and iPad Pro -- here's what we found.
November 5, 2019 7:30 AM PST

iOS 13 is a pretty significant update.
Apple's iOS 13 and iPadOS 13 launch has been a whirlwind. Since its initial
release, we've seen several updates released in just over a month. The latest
version is iOS 13.2, which added support for the iPhone 11's Deep Fusion camera
trick, and the new AirPods Pro (read our in-depth AirPods Pro review here),
along with a bunch of new emoji. All of that is in addition to the core
features iOS 13 brought to your devices. After you've updated your iPhone or
iPad to the latest software and caught your breath, make sure to try out the
new dark mode (huzzah!), the gesture keyboard and improvements made to Safari,
along with anything else we cover in our complete guide to iOS 13.

Those features are great and all, but we've also found a handful of features
Apple didn't announce that are just as good, if not better. The new volume
indicator alone is -- chef's kiss -- a feature iOS has needed for years. And
iMessage search, well, it's downright amazing. Don't forget about the new
photo-sharing options.
Below are 13 of the best, hidden features we found in iOS 13. If you haven't
installed iOS 13 yet, make sure you get your phone ready for the update before
taking the plunge. Should something go wrong while it installs, you'll be glad
you took the time. Oh, and if you're still on the fence about getting an iPhone
11, be sure to read our iPhone 11 review.

1.
Optimized battery charging
Routinely charging your iPhone's ($900 at Amazon) battery to full, and keeping
it there for extended amounts of time, can damage your battery over time. A new
option in iOS 13 is intended to help prolong your battery's life by learning
your charging habits and preventing the battery from immediately charging to
100%.
If you normally charge overnight while you sleep, Optimized Battery Charging
will keep your iPhone's battery at 80% for most of the night, finishing off the
last 20% of charge right before your alarm goes off.
To use the new features, go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health and turn it
on.

2.
Use the new Scroll Bar
When you're scrolling a webpage in Safari, a new Scroll Bar shows up on the
right side of the screen. Only instead of just being a handy way to see where
you're at on a page, you can now use it to scroll faster. Try it out by
starting to scroll on a page, then long-press on the scroll bar and drag it up
or down. The faster you drag, the faster Safari will scroll.

3.
Scan documents in the Files app
The revamped Files app now lets you scan documents and save them directly to
your device or cloud storage with little effort. Open the Files app, select the
Browse tab, tap on the three-dot icon in the top-right corner, then Scan
Documents. Hold your device over the document you want to scan, and it should
automatically capture the page. You can scan multiple pages into one PDF file
and then save to iCloud, or import it into another app once you're done.

4.
iMessage search actually works now
Searching for past messages in the iMessage app has always been horrible. It
simply hasn't worked. That's changed. You can now search for a single word or
phrase, and results are almost instantly displayed.
It's pretty cool. To try it, open the Messages app, swipe down to reveal the
search field and type. Neat, right?

5.
Search your iPhone with your voice
Anywhere you find a search bar in Apple's own apps, you'll notice there's now a
microphone on the far-right side. Tap on the new icon to enter your search
query by voice, instead of having to type it out.
Apps like Settings, Mail, Messages and the Today View are just a few examples

In the Shortcuts app, choose Gallery, then find the shortcuts From Your Apps

shortcuts should be listed.

Safari Shortcuts not launching

2019-11-08 Thread Todd W
Hi All,

After updating a few weeks ago to iOS 13 I noticed that the shortcut
buttons in Safari didn’t launch when tapped. I’m referring to the
favorites that come up when you tap the address bar to be able to type in a
web URL. I hoped that subsequent updates would resolve the issue but am
still seeing it after updating to 13.2.2. It’s happening on my iPhone 7
and the odd thing is that my iPad Pro works as expected after the updates.
Is anyone else having this issue? I’ve not seen reference to it as a known
issue but may have missed it somewhere along the line.

Thanks,

Todd

Hello,

I have been in contact with the developer of Twitterrific and there is a fix
coming soon. I have found that if you do a manual refresh on the timeline it
will load the proper text in the Tweet.

Subject: Annoying Facebook App Issue and a VoiceOver Question

Hi,
For quite some time now, I’ve had this annoying issue when posting or
commenting on people’s posts in the Facebook app. The scenario goes like this:
I’m typing away, either on the onscreen keyboard, or, more frequently on my
Braille display. I’ll enter part or all of a word and WHAM! up pops someone’s
name, completely stealing focus away from my eloquent prose, ha ha. At that
instant I verbally utter some eloquent and dare I say vociferous curses which
fortunately won’t make it into my post or comment. I then have to do a lot of
fiddling about to regain focus on the edit field where I was writing. My
question, therefore, is whether there’s a way to stop Facebook from popping up
what it thinks are contact suggestions? If not, is there a way to tell
VoiceOver to ignore those popups and maintain focus where I’m editing? Thanks
in advance for any suggestions.

RE: Braille Table in the Rotor

2019-11-08 Thread Nicki Keck
HI Tom,

This is really confusing, and I had trouble figuring it out too.

What you need to do is go to your braille tables and remove the U.S. English
braille from the braille tables. Trust me, you have to do this, or the
following won't work.
Then, go to where it says, default braille table, UEB. Double tap on that and
choose US English contracted braille, and you will be set. You can remove
braille table now and it will never change.

The reason just removing braille table from the rotor wouldn't work, at least
for me, is that it seemed that whenever I rebooted, or did any kind of IOS
update on the phone (which we all know has been frequent since 13), it changed
back to UEB. Also, if you don't remove the US contracted table from your
braille tables, it won't let you make it the default when you double tap on
UEB. Don't ask me why that is, but it won't. so you first have to remove it
from your braille tables.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Braille Table in the Rotor

Hi,
I have a couple of questions about Braille Table in the rotor. I use my iPhone
with a Braille display frequently; in fact, I’m using one now. I have input set
to eight-dot and output set to contracted. I have NOT switched over to using
UEB yet and, frankly, I don’t plan to do it until it’s absolutely necessary.
So, my questions are these:
1. Apple has set the system Braille table to UEB and I can add English US if I
want to, so I did. Can I set the system Braille table to English US if I want
to? Last I checked, I couldn’t find a way to do that.
2. Regardless of the answer to question 1, can I get rid of Braille Table in
the rotor? If I’ve set my preferred Braille table and don’t see a need to
change it on the fly, why would I need Braille table in the rotor?

These questions have been bugging me since IOS 13 came out.

Hi Tom. I have these exact questions. it doesn't matter if I change between the
two tables this pesky UEB keeps being the one used! I hate UEB!!! lol. I can't
delete it either. How annoying. Just because it's the standard doesn't mean
people want to use it. We should have the option.

Start by deleting the thread in the messaging app where it is using her
email address. Then I would suggest you go into the messaging app and start
a new thread to this person by starting a new message and select the button
to add a contact in the To field. When it takes you to her contact page,
select her cell number and then go on to the text field of the message.

Subject: Aggravating Issue with Messaging

Good Friday Morning All,

Several weeks ago I sent a message via the Messaging App to a friend using
her e-mail address rather than her mobile telephone number.

The aggravating issue is this; now when I try to send a message (via
Messaging) to her, her name resolves to that e-mail address rather than her
mobile number.

I have an iPhone 8 with iOS 13.2 currently installed.

I did edit my friend’s contact, removing her e-mail address and, of course,
leaving her mobile phone number in place. By doing this, I am now able to
message her using her name. But this is quite aggravating; both to have use
this “work around” and the fact that I was not offered a choice between her
e-mail address and mobile phone number.

There must be a more efficient way to get her mobile phone number rather
than her e-mail address. Can anybody offer any suggestions?

Re: Braille Table in the Rotor

2019-11-08 Thread Wayne Merritt
Hi. I'm speculating here, but I think if you aren't using a Braille
display or a second language, then that item does not appear in the
rotor. At least that has been the case for me. I have used Braille
displays with my iPhone before, but not currently. I've looked in the
rotor setting, and Braille Table is selected, but it is dimmed since I
don't have a display connected/am not using one. If I were to remove
the languages that I have in my rotor, such as a secondary US English
voice and the Australian voice, then Language would not appear in my
rotor either. AS far as changing the display language, in iOS 13.2, go
to VoiceOver/Braille/Braille tables. There is a system button where
you can go in to change the system wide Braille language you want to
use, such as English US.

Hth,
Wayne

Not Seeing Apps in Shortcuts

2019-11-08 Thread kelby carlson
There are a number of apps I'd like to try and create shortcuts for. However,
when I search for them in the shortcuts app, I can't find them even though they
are allowed to interface with Siri in settings. Are there some apps that just
don't work with shortcuts?

Re: how buggy does iOS 13.2 remain?

2019-11-08 Thread Richard Turner
Kelby,
The message below yours is from Sieghard about Apple and Steve Jobs, ... so I
am not sure which bug you are referring to.
If you are talking about the pronunciation thing with the word gun, that is a
VoiceOver issue as I'm using Tom Enhanced and it spells out the word gun, but
if I use a British voice, it reads the word correctly.
This is new as far as I can tell.

Richard,

It looks like this bug may actually only occur in VoiceDream with an iOS
voice—very strange, and I'll have to email the developer.

6 days after he passed away and while he was instrumental in the release of the
iPhone in 2007 and probably controlled many aspects of hardware and software

did not show up until 2009 so at best he was part of iOS development for 1 or
at most 2 versions afterwards. Back then there were a lot less devices and even
though they are Apple's devices, they still need to be supported. There were a
lot less apps and I would probably not be wrong in saying that many apps were
maybe less complicated, nowadays the sheer processing power of the iPhone

For me one of the worst bugs in iOS 13 is that dictation is extremely
compromised if you are bi-lingual and maybe it's even worse if you are
multi-lingual. I speak German and English fluently and have both keyboards
installed. Dictation in German for the most part seems fine although I don't
use it as often, but when my keyboard is set to English it's absolutely
horrible because often SIRI will try to interpret what I dictate in English as
German and the result is pure gibberish. Sometimes I dictate a shorter part of
a sentence and it's perfect, then I continue and I speak a bit longer and SIRI
inserts what I say half in English and half in what it thinks I said is German.
Like I said, it's horrible and one of these days I will have to turn off
Voiceover and ask a sighted person to start dictation for me to see if this is
only happening when Voiceover is running. I somehow can't see why it would, but
if it isn't and all sighted users also have this experience I am surprised it
wasn't fixed yet and if it is Voiceover related then I have to start bugging
Apple Accessibility about it.

I agree. I would also like to add that Apple is putting more focus on
accessibility in their development frameworks. SwiftUI, Apple’s latest
framework for developing the user interface for apps allows developers to make
a lot of apps accessible without much work. I would say if anything, Apple is
focused on accessibility more than ever before. I will say that when Steve
Jobs was running the company it seems like there were less bugs when IOS
upgrades were first released.

The addition of Voice Control which probably benefits users with motor

Lastly, every year when a new version of iOS comes out there are initial bugs,
some worse than others and every year for the last 10 years which
