At the Seeing Eye, you pay $150 for the first dog, and you pay
$50 for every dog after that. The first time you are there 26
days. After that, you go back for only 3 weeks instead of 4 for
your second dog and the rest of them. Guide Dog Foundation, and
Freedom Guide Dogs do not charge for their dogs. When I went to
Leader Dogs, the Lions Club paid for the dog. Freedom will come
to your home and train you in your own neighborhood.

RE: Guide dog in United States-help me Please 🙏

2019-12-01 Thread 'jan howells' via VIPhone

Hi Kiruna,

When I went to the Seeing Eye, there were a few people from
Canada there. They did not come to visit me before I went for
the first time, but they had me go there for an interview and and
a walk with an instructor and a dog harness. I passed their
walking test. They did not make me walk with a cane, just with
an instructor and a dog harness. The second time that I went,
they sent me exercises to do. They also took me home. If I
needed them, I would call them, and then they would come out to
my home or work sesting.

You put your apple device in landscape mode to use the mbraille
app. That way you can use an imaginary braille keyboard by
touch.

Re: MBraille

2019-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Joe,
It is a one time fee. If you want all of its features, I think it is around
$39.00 which includes the third party keyboard capability.
I have not used the braille screen input enough to be able to detail the
differences in gestures since I was using MBraille before Apple improved the
braille screen input.
But, here is the link to the help file where you can read through all of
MBraille's features.
I really like the "dot commands" which are commands you can do in the stand
alone app to then initiate an action in another app, like perfecting a note,
then writing in braille on the last line, the period followed by sms and the
person's name or phone number, and it launches the messages app with your text
ready to just hit the send button.
Anyway, here is the link:
https://mpaja.com/mbraille/en.lproj/help.htm

Have you checked that under notifications messages are on with sounds, and
badges etc?
Under sounds have you assigned a sound?
Make sure you have a sound there
Then in your contacts, you can assign a sound different than what is under the

Got my dog from Leader Dogs in 95 as well. At the time, I was living in Mexico.

Dave, that Amazon comment was very ignorant and entirely inappropriate.
Kiruna is from India and you may want to remember that not everybody knows
about everything.
I am in Canada and I get lots of people who ask me where I got my guide dog
from, how much they are and if I have to pay for them.
And just in case this is something you didn't know, India is part of the
Commonwealth just as Canada, Australia, Pakistan, Nigeria and other countries
are so maybe it would be possible for somebody from a Commonwealth country
where there is no guide dog school to apply to a guide dog school in another
Commonwealth country and be accepted to get a dog. I am not saying this is so,
but it is certainly possible.
I am in Canada yet I can apply at any US guide dog school to get a dog if I so
choose even though we have several guide dog schools in Canada. My first dog
was from Leader Dogs for the Blind in Rochester, Michigan and among the I think
24 people who were there in my group to get dogs 4 came from Spain on some
arrangement the Spanish government or maybe it was some sort of Spanish not for
profit group had with Leader Dogs.

Since nobody explained to Kiruna what the usual process is to get a guide dog,
I will do so in general terms.
You apply to a guide dog school, if it is the first time you get a dog from
them they typically would visit you where you live, they would want to see your
home and where you work (if you work) and they would also want to see you walk
around with a cane or your previous guide dog if you currently have one to
assess your mobility skills and so on.
If they accept you, they will at some point let you know when you can get a
dog, some schools have fairly long waiting lists. Once you get the date you
have to go to the school for typically a 3-week training course where you get
to know your dog and your dog gets to know you. Walking with a guide dog
requires training just as walking with a cane does and if you have never had a
dog you have to of course learn how to care for the dog, this includes
grooming, feeding and picking up the dog poop in a little plastic bag; I know,
sounds shitty, but I shit you not.
After your course you get to take your dog home, some schools may also send a
guide dog trainer home with you to do some more training in your own
environment or some schools may ask you to come for a shorter course at the
school and then you do more one-on-one training in your own city/town. In rare
cases a trainer may even come to you and do the entire training with you in
your city/town, but I think most schools would need a good reason to do this.
Most schools also like to follow up with you on an annual bases and they may
send a trainer to do a walk with you and evaluate how things are going.
Keep in mind that when you get a dog that dog is not yours. I assume all
schools are the same in this respect, but should you not care for the dog
properly they do have the right to take it away from you and I have heard of a
few cases where this was done.
As for the cost to train a dog, including breeding programs, puppy raising,
training and after-care it is I believe around $30,000 or $35,000 US so
actually buying a guide dog is not something most people could afford if the
schools weren't not for profit organizations who are financed from donations,
fund raising events, money bequeathed to them and so on. I believe in England
the government is involved as well and in Germany the health insurance pays for
guide dogs as well as for things like dog food, vet costs etc.

Lastly, remember the country where you live. How accepted are dogs there? I
haven't been to India with or without a dog, but I did once take my guide dog
to the Philippines where my wife is from. This was actually my first trip there
in 2009 and when we first met in person. I got all the paperwork done and I
wish I had not taken him. The first week was OK, we stayed on a small island
where we had rented a house together with another friend of mine from Germany
who is also married to a Filipina. The second week when I was back in the
Manila area I could not take my dog anywhere, not even into a Mcdonald's. We
did have a hotel which allowed pets for a fee and while a guide dog here is not
considered a pet and has rights, these do not apply in other countries. We
usually only went out for an hour or two at a time because I could not bring
him anywhere, I couldn't go into a mall with him (all malls in the Philippines
have armed security guards at all entrances), I

I actually still have a My Weigh scale brand new in its box as an emergency

When it comes to a scale I still like the MyWeigh talking scale. I know
Cristobal seems to break them at a prodigious rate, but I had my first for 20
years and then the company sent me a replacement for the shipping cost of $25,
that was now I think 3 years ago and the new one is going strong.

I am replying with MBraille as a third party keyboard.
It has had that capacity for a long time.
I like it better than the built-in braille screen input partly because you
select it when you need it and you don't have to deal with the rotor.
His approach has been the best braille app I've used.
He keeps it updated and you can elect to use UEB or not.

Re: Guide dog in United States-help me Please 

2019-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
Thank you Sieghard for giving such a complete answer.
I sent a link to a Wikipedia page of guide dog schools around the world, but
since I've never had a dog, I wasn't comfortable giving too much detail.
Great comment on the poop issue.

And just in case this is something you didn't know, India is part of the

are so maybe it would be possible for somebody from a Commonwealth country
where there is no guide dog school to apply to a guide dog school in another

but it is certainly possible.

Hi,
I suggest that you reach out to your local blind organization. They may have
resources for you. unfortunately, obtaining a guide dog is not fast process
where you can just pay out-of-pocket and get training. I personally prefer
guide dogs for the blind in California or Oregon in the United States. You can
also give them a call and get information.

It defaults to automatic.
If you double tap on it, you can choose, bluetooth, or speaker.
I have not tried this, but if the setting under audio that automatically

maybe this way the call will start on speaker, then switch to earpiece when you

If I understand what you are referring to, automatic switching between
speakerphone and the earpiece, this is based on the proximity sensor. It is
designed
so that you can pull the phone away from your ear and automatically switch to
speaker, but I have always found it to be a bit overly sensitive. In iOS
10, under settings, general, accessibility, voiceover, and audio, you can
disable this feature.

I can only repeat myself: remember there is a search feature in the Settings
app.
If you open settings and type “routing” or even just “rout”, the first result
is Call Audio Routing, swipe right once past it and Voiceover says
“Accessibility → Touch” which is the location of the Setting.

OK, well, Apple made some very odd choices in iOS 13 around where it put some

Call audio routing is now under Accessibility, VoiceOver, Touch.
The last item in there is call audio routing.
It defaults to automatic.
If you double tap on it, you can choose, bluetooth, or speaker.
I have not tried this, but if the setting under audio that automatically
switches to speaker when the phone is moved away from your head, is left on,
maybe this way the call will start on speaker, then switch to earpiece when you
hold it up to your ear.

Get a 1 litre or 32 ounce Nalgene bottle, fill it in the morning and make sure
you drink all of it in addition to what else you may drink, if water is all you
drink then drink two of them or get a half gallon pitcher and make sure you
drink it.
I am all for technology, but I find that some of the stuff is more trouble than
it's worth. What some say about needing a gallon of water a day is nonsense
anyways unless maybe you live in a very hot country and work physically, for
the most part your body does a pretty good job telling you when it wants water,
of course you then have to listen and not ignore it.

Hello,
It is an app that will help you to drink more water during the day. You can set
it up to remind you every hour to drink water and you can log each glass you
have. It will also calculate about how much water you need to drink every day.

It’s the one I’m still using. I bought it back in March of 2018. Replaced the
battery which cost me less than $5 in Spring of this year. I think there were
one or maybe two iOS updates in this time which for me messed with Vos ability
to announce weight in real time, but those were quickly acknowledged by staff
and fixed.
I believe there were one or two more models also mentioned for kitchen scale

I’ve had no need to look for a replacement device.

My understanding is that this is the method for the iPhone 8 and later.
I think for the iPhone 7 you hold volume down and the side button.
Of course if by “reboot” you mean to just turn it off then yes, all phones are
the same, hold the side button until the power off message appears, then tap on
Power off.

If you only need US Currency, the EyeNote app is excellent.

If you are both using the same ID, then it will be like sending messages to
yourself.
Try setting up a unique text tone in your contacts for your wife and see if
that helps.
My wife and I do not share an Apple ID so I can only guess.

RE: Food scales update

2019-12-01 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
It’s the one I’m still using. I bought it back in March of 2018. Replaced the
battery which cost me less than $5 in Spring of this year. I think there were
one or maybe two iOS updates in this time which for me messed with Vos ability
to announce weight in real time, but those were quickly acknowledged by staff
and fixed.

I believe there were one or two more models also mentioned for kitchen scale
purposes, but for me at least, the drop scale has so far worked like a champ.
I’ve had no need to look for a replacement device.

I know a while ago there was some discussion on this forum about the Drop
kitchen scale and it’s app. Wondering if that is still the best choice for a
kitchen food scale, and accompanying IPhone app? Are there any other connected
scales that people are using that are accessible with the IPhone?

I know a while ago there was some discussion on this forum about the Drop

a kitchen food scale, and accompanying IPhone app? Are there any other

Hello,
It is an app that will help you to drink more water during the day. You can set
it up to remind you every hour to drink water and you can log each glass you
have. It will also calculate about how much water you need to drink every day.

Any ones you can recommend?

Re: a call audio routing question

2019-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
OK, well, Apple made some very odd choices in iOS 13 around where it put some
settings.

If I understand what you are referring to, automatic switching between
speakerphone and the earpiece, this is based on the proximity sensor. It is
designed
so that you can pull the phone away from your ear and automatically switch to
speaker, but I have always found it to be a bit overly sensitive. In iOS

disable this feature.

Thanks for the info. However, I don't see anything at all under settings
that says interaction. Sometimes, I want to use the speaker when a call
begins. But I'll keep working with this, and keep meeting challenges with
iOS 13 as they arise.

It could be that this only works with certain Apple keyboards.
It certainly does not work with any of the Logitech keyboards I've tried.

How odd. That one isn’t working for me. Not sure if it’s a bug, or an issue
with my keyboard. My keyboard seems to be styled after the Magic keyboard but
it says there are shortcuts specific to iPad os, so I really wonder if some of
these could be causing the problem with VO as well as with other apps. Also,
strangely enough, in commands, it will let me delete, but not modify anything
or add anything new.
Thanks.

Re: a call audio routing question

2019-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
Dwayne,
If you are using iOS 13, you won't find settings from those directions, those
are for iOS 12 and earlier.
Accessibility has its own category now, just after display and brightness.
The only setting I'm finding is under VoiceOver, Audio, where you can have it
set to auto switch to speaker phone when you move the phone away from your ear.
Or, simply put your hand over the upper half of the screen and pull it away to
simulate having held it up to your ear.
There was a setting, which I'm not finding, to have it just go to the speaker,
but then it was hard to get it off speaker phone, so this method seems to work
better.
HTH,

Richard

If I understand what you are referring to, automatic switching between
speakerphone and the earpiece, this is based on the proximity sensor. It is
designed
so that you can pull the phone away from your ear and automatically switch to
speaker, but I have always found it to be a bit overly sensitive. In iOS

iPhone 6S dropping phone calls

2019-12-01 Thread Tom Rash
This has been happening for a while, I think since the IOS 13 upgrade. Not
with every call. It appears to be random. After a few minutes into a
telephone conversation, the call just drops. No real pattern to this.
Anyone else having this problem? Thanks.

I believe you have to purchase this App. I want it. But I don't want to
purchase it, if it is not accessible. I did look on Apple Vis to see if
it had been reviewed. I couldn't find it there.

Any help is much appreciated.

iCloud cyncing

2019-12-01 Thread Fanus Buys
Hello list
My itunes library has now been uploaded to iCloud. When I try to play some
songs on my iPhone the name of the album and song shows but when I try to
play it I get a message "this song is not available, if you want to play it,
go to itunes and switch cloud syncing on". I searched on the iPhone but I
can not find a setting which says "iCloud sync". Where would I find this
setting? I have an iPhone 11 and the latest IOS and the song does play on my
iPod Touch 6th gen, so I do not know what is missing on the iPhone 11.

How odd. That one isn’t working for me. Not sure if it’s a bug, or an issue
with my keyboard. My keyboard seems to be styled after the Magic keyboard
but it says there are shortcuts specific to iPad os, so I really wonder if
some of these could be causing the problem with VO as well as with other
apps. Also, strangely enough, in commands, it will let me delete, but not
modify anything or add anything new.

Thanks.

Command-F7 if I remember right.
Command is what the rest called the Windows key. But Mac's are laid out
different, so might be where we kept the alt key.

RobH, struggling to remember.

Subject: Turning On Voiceover on MacBook Air

Hi, list.

I have just ordered a MacBook Air and it would be here next week.

I have never used Apple laptop before so I would like to know how to turn on
Voiceover independently and other basic voiceover commands to start with.

Your help is much appreciated.

Thanks!
