Re: A Question About Third-Party Audio Description Apps for iOS

2020-03-22 Thread Yohandy

Hello,

Do you have a link to this app? is that the exact name? I'll try
searching for spectrum on the appstore and see if I can find it. I think
the other app you refer to is Actiview. Works just like this. hth!

The problem is that, at present, the number of available AD tracks is
somewhat limited.

A long while back, I seem to remember that there was a third-party app that
also provided audio description tracks that could be synchronized with the
playback of movies.

Does anyone remember the name of the app and is it still available?

I know that the Disney app, at one point, offered such a feature but am not
certain if that is the app I am recalling or not.

All replies greatly appreciated.

Hi Mark,

I was signed into my Google account, and under settings, I had notification
set to a high priority, but the only way that I knew I had notifications
was to go into the notification area of the app, and check them. I even
tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app but with still no luck. Very
strange.

RE: The Google News for iOS App, Give It a Try

2020-03-22 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Shane,

You ask an excellent question.

I am getting news notifications just as I would expect from an iOS app.

Now I am not a Google News for iOS expert but one thing that seems to be
crucial to using the app, in terms of using all of its features was to sign
into my Google account from within the app.

While it is not necessary to sign into one’s Google account in order to read
articles, I think the notification feature only works when a Google account is
active.

Just a guess.

RE: Hygrometer, Talking Unit Found, Info Inside

2020-03-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Just check it out at www.netatmo.com, there would also
be a number of older posts about it in the archives.
The app is accessible although you have to swipe for Voiceover to read the
information, touching and exploring the screen does not work very well.
You can access all the basic info like indoor/outdoor temperature, humidity,
indoor CO2 levels and, for the main module, the noise level.
Unfortunately at this point you can’t go back and see the information from
yesterday or other days in the past.
The system consists of the initial package which is the main indoor module and
the outdoor module. The indoor module gets connected to power via Micro USB and
it’s about the size of one of the round Anker or other brand external
batteries, a cylinder made from aluminum maybe 2 inches thick and 4 or 5 inches
long. Actually all modules have this form factor, could be that the other
modules are just a bit shorter.
The outdoor and other indoor modules take 4 Triple A batteries and you can
simply use a coin to unscrew the plastic lid on one end to put them in.
It’s been super long since I connected mine to WiFi and maybe the process has
changed, but basically you start out by downloading the app and you then do
whatever the wizard tells you to connect the indoor module to your WiFi. The
outdoor module which comes in the package is already paired to the indoor
module and you can easily have it 20 or 30 feet away unless maybe you live in a
house with concrete or stone walls, this may reduce the range a bit.
You can add up to 3 more indoor modules as well as 1 rain gauge and 1 wind
gauge.
The rain gauge is made from plastic, it has a funnel-like top and the water it
catches then falls through a small opening onto a tiny shovel which I assume
holds 1 Ml, when it’s full the weight of the water tips that shovel down and
spills the water out and another shovel on the other side is filled, sort of
like a tiny really well-balanced Seesaw.
On the bottom is a standard threated tripod mount and I think it comes with a
mounting bracket.
The wind gauge is also a thick plastic cylinder, maybe 4 inches thick with an
opening all the way around near the top, this is where the wind goes through
and it is measured. The app gives you wind speed, but I don’t think I saw wind
direction which I assume is there visually, but maybe Voiceover doesn’t read
it. I don’t have mine properly installed yet.
Rain Gauge and Wind Gauge do need to be mounted correctly, the rain gauge
should best be about 3 feet above ground on a pole and of course you have to
make sure it is perfectly level since it would not measure totally correct if
it were tilted one way or another.
The recommendation for the wind gauge is to have it mounted on the highest part
of your house’s roof and then on a pole which I believe should be 5 feet tall.
This means you probably have to get something made, I asked a guy to weld
together two steel plates in a V-shape so they fit perfectly across the ridge
of my house’s roof, then he will weld the 5-foot pole onto this and I’ll mount
the wind gauge on that. Of course you also have to use lots of silicon or roof
pitch to make sure you don’t get water coming through where you screw this to
the roof. The wind gauge has an arrow on it and it has to be mounted so that
the arrow points North, I still have to read or figure out where this is
supposed to be magnetic North or true North. This little detail tells me that
it does indicate wind direction as well as wind speed.
The new stations now are I think also Home Kit compatible, mine is too old for
this since I purchased my main unit back in 2013. At that point the app was
barely useable, but when I contacted Netatmo I received a relatively quick
reply from their head developer, a Spaniard who was living in Paris, France
where the company is located. He was quite interested in accessibility at the
time and made beta versions available to me and I then provided feedback as to
which changes worked well and which didn’t. I’ve been meaning to see if he is
still there and ask if he couldn’t try to make historical data available in
some way and also ask him about the wind direction.
All in all this is a good and accurate weather station, but it’s also not
cheap. I believe the initial main module with outdoor module is $159 US, then
each indoor module is I think $79 and the rain and wind gauges are a bit more
than that. I haven’t looked at their pricing in a while and they do sometimes
offer 15 or 20% off promos, I think last year they had a Father’s Day promo and
of course also a Black Friday one, you can also find it on Amazon I think, but
you can order directly from them as well and in this case that is what I would
do since it’s the same price.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi Sieghard,

I’m very interested in this Netatmo device. Any tips for me as I start
shopping for it? I would want the wind and rain gauge and probably two or
three additional sensors.
Tips appreciated.

Mail in Catalina

2020-03-22 Thread Eric Caron
Hi listers,

One thing I have noticed after updating to Catalina is that moving
messages to a mail box is slow with mail stating busy and then after a pause
finally opening up the context menu and eventually the list to move to a
mailbox.

Does this improve with time? It has been about a week.

Have others noticed this behavior?

I do have a lot of accounts and a lot of mailboxes where I organize
information. I expect I have a lot more mail than the average user.

Subject: gmail

This may be a
gmail question not a voice over question. Dismiss it if you think it
inappropriate for the list.
I've been going through the "ALL" folder and getting rid of all the mail I
thought was deleted but never has been. Everything is in there including notes
and they date back to 2017, which was when I set up the g mail account on my
iPhone.
All was going well until suddenly all the mail from the All folder
wound up in my In box. I don't remember saying move all to the In box but that
is the only thing I can figure out happened when I told it to move a few of the
posts back to the in box.
Someone told me that there is a way from the phone to tell gmail to
delete all deleted mail from the server but I can't find it anywhere in
settings on the actual phone. My guess that if this is even possible it must be
done from gmail on the internet.
In settings I see a place to turn off notes and calender which I take to mean
notes and calaender appointments will remain on the phone but there will be no
back up that I can access in the archive or All folder which I"m not sure means
it will never show up anywhere in ether space. Is that a correct assumption?
I picked up a cheapphone from Consumer Cellular and left it on the original
apple account which means if I cloud is on everything from my old phone starts
to get transferred over. I've turned backup and the drive off because I do not
want all that old gmail on the new phone. Same with not wanting Outlook on the
new phone either because it too never truly deletes everything you've deleted.
I intend to move everything over from the old phone which is still functional
for the most part but has a different number, when the new phone gets unlocked
in 180 days or so, I will move my T Mobile chip to the new phone and ditch the
consumer cellular service. I would have no problem keeping it other than I have
a free lifetime t Mobile account through a family member and I do not want to
give that up. I would in fact recommend CC for anyone who wants to look into a
more affordable option. I bought a new 6S for $150 which some may laugh at but
it's more than adequate for now until I find the need to replace it with
something with more memory. It's running 13_ and qualifies for the newest
updates and there is no hitch with it's performance. I wil switch it over to
Spanish and run it on wi-fi alone once I buy another new phone somewhere down
the line.

Any suggestions how to once and for all get mail off the server so it does not
download to other devices? I did a google search and the only useful thing I
found before losing patience was to go into the All folder and get rid of what
is in there.

I hope all are hanging in there with social distancing and recovering from
being sick or trying to prevent getting sick. I'm taking this time to clean up
my computer and files on the phone and generally things are busy as ever due to
the fact that communication through this technology is running smoothly.

RE: Hygrometer, Talking Unit Found, Info Inside

2020-03-22 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There is always a case to be made for a relatively inexpensive, stand-alone and
self-voicing product such as this.
However, the flexibility and additional features you get from a connected
weather station like Netatmo which you would check via you r iPhone or Amazon
Echo are worth the extra cost to me. I have had my Netatmo for I think 7 years
now and apart from changing batteries it’s performed reliably and I can check
the indoor and outdoor temperature at my house whether I’m at home or
travelling around the world (OK, not an option right now, I know).
In addition to temperature I of course also get indoor and outdoor humidity,
CO2 level and noise level on the main indoor module.
Since I have also purchased the rain and wind gauge I also get information
about that and the additional two indoor modules allow me to get temperature,
humidity and CO2 level in 4 rooms as the main module provides this information
as well as the 1 indoor module you get when you buy the station (it’s in our
bedroom) and then there are the two additional indoor modules (one downstairs
in my woodworking shop and one downstairs in our guest room).

Since Alexa and Google Home are both part of our home automation plan setting
and checking the remaining time for a timer is as simple as telling either one
of these digital assistants to do so. The nice thing is that when we are
cooking and just put something in the saute pan which needs a 3 minute timer
you can just ask Google Assistant to set it as you put it in without ever
having to first set it up or push any buttons and of course being able to set
multiple timers and give them names is fantastic. Since we have a Google
speaker with a display in the kitchen my wife can see at a glance what’s left
on the timer, all I have to do is say “Hey Google, what’s left on my timer” or,
if I have multiple timers I can say “Hey Google, what’s left on my potato
timer” or “What’s left on my Lasagna timer”. When the timer is done and the
sound plays I just say “Hey Google stop” and it stops again without me having
to go to where my timer is and press a button with potentially greasy hands.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Hi all,

this is what I decided on:
I didn't want to go the Amazon Alexa or iPhone route if I could avoid it, just
wanted a small unit I could put in the central part of the house. This is the
info
of what I purchased.

Product Description
Made for almost any room and lifestyle, this heavy-duty, stylish clock boasts
all the features you could ever ask for in a timepiece - and more. Its cube-like

table. And the features it offers make it an asset to any room.

All the buttons are found on the top of the clock in a circular pattern. The

But that's not all. The clock can speak the time in either 12 or 24-hour
format. With the press of a single button, you can access the built-in timer,

The clock will even announce how much time is left on the timer when you

Re: using the spectrum app on apple tv

2020-03-22 Thread PRAMIT BHARGAVA
Hi Larry,

If you are using Apple TV 4th generation and 4K remotes then using SIRI you
activate VoiceOver.
VoiceOver can also be turned on using Siri. Just hold the Siri button on
your remote, and then say “Turn VoiceOver on,” or “Turn VoiceOver off.”
To move between previous and next item simply brush your finger left or
right on touchpad.
The touchpad is the flat surface area towards the top of the remote; it’s
above the Menu and TV buttons. This is where swipe movements take place.
Use this button to select items by pressing down on the touchpad until a
click is felt and/or heard.

*A note on app navigation: Within the Spectrum TV app, pressing the Menu
button (top-left) acts as a “go back” button, where it takes you to a
previous item.*

*Hope this helps*

*Pramit*
