AW: iPhone sanitizer

2020-12-01 Thread Alexandra
I use one from an unknown company that works quite well. You put in your phone,
start the cleaning process by pressing a button which beeps. After five
minutes, you get a short sequence of three beeps to tell you the cleaning is
over. This is a great, accessible mainstream gadget.

Funny you should ask. I've not used them, but in the November issue of Access
World, the following was mentioned.Talking smartphone sanitizer

What do all of us touch thousands of times every day? Our smartphones or
tablets or other mobile devices. In response to this fact, devices employing
ultraviolet rays to disinfect phones and other small object grew quickly in
popularity with the pandemic.

Two unique models available from Mystic Access offer voice prompts to tell you
when the disinfecting process has begun and when it is complete. One model
offers aromatherapy as well, and both can accommodate other small items – think
cash, keys, credit cards, or other tiny items you touch all the time. Choose
between a five minute version with aromatherapy or fifteen minute version with
wireless charging capabilities. $65 from Mystic Access, www.mysticaccess.com or
call (716) 543-3323 .

Are there alternatives to the Staples ones that maybe talk or give

I believe they are called electronic screen wipes. Walmart or any office supply

2020-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
Money Reader is dead. So, sadly, you can't keep it without staying with the
phone it worked on, and I'm not sure it will work even then.
So, if you only need U.S. currency, Eyenote, by the Bureau of Engraving is
excellent and free. Plus it tells you if it is the front or the back of the
bill which is mostly unnecessary information unless you are trying to use a
vending machine of some kind.

Seeing AI has a currency channel with several currencies included. Also free.

Another free app that does some currency identification is TapTapSee:

A paid app that gets lots of high praise that has lots of currencies is Cash

There is no browser for the Apple TV as far as I know and neither is there an
email client and you can't text with it (not sure why you would want to).
You do of course have the YouTube app and for things like Facebook if there are
concerts you want to listen to, then that is what Airplay would be for, just
play the concert on your iPhone and Airplay it to your Apple TV, you will find
this in control centre.

Hi there,
So now that I am playing with the Apple TV, I wonder about apps for it. For
instance, am I able to do things like email, texting and other things like
Facebook or Twitter?
I stream Facebook live concerts and it would be cool to have them coming
through the Apple TV which is hooked up to my home entertainment system.

RE: iPhone sanitizer

2020-12-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
UV light is used in many applications including in water filters and I assume
it probably works well enough. Would I spend money for something like this?
Probably not, I wash my hands frequently and from time to time I just wipe down
my iPhone. I think it's important to realize that sometimes devices like this
may give you a false sense of security, I think it's still much better to wash
yur hands with soap and warm water often and simply don't touch more stuff than
you have to when you are out and about. Certainly those of you in Australia and
New Zealand can sit back and gloat if you wish since the super strict
lock-downs early on in your countries have maybe not illiminate COVID-19

RE: Apple TV and apps

2020-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
Along with what Sieghard said, you can airplay anything you want from your
phone to the Apple TV. You can also use Screen Mirroring to have the iPhone
screen on your TV, handy for low-vision users wanting to see their photographs
more clearly.
Depending on the TV, you can download lots of apps.
Here is a snipit from an Apple support page followed by the link:
Browse or search the App Store
Open the App Store App Store on Apple TV.

In the menu bar, swipe to any of the following categories:

Discover: Browse a great selection of apps chosen by the App Store.

Apps: Browse apps by category.

Games: Browse games in the App Store.

Arcade: Browse games available in Apple Arcade, an ad-free subscription-based
gaming service. See Find games in Apple Arcade.

Purchased: See the apps you’ve purchased in the App Store—including any apps
purchased on other iOS or iPadOS devices that have a custom Apple TV version of
the app, as well as purchases by Family Sharing members.

Search button Search: Enter a search term to find apps by name.

Use Siri to find apps
You can use Siri to dictate while using Search or at any time to find apps on
Apple TV.

Do one of the following:

In the Search screen of the App Store App Store, highlight the text entry
field, press and hold the Siri button Siri button on the Siri Remote, and speak.

For more information, see Use Siri dictation on Apple TV.

>From anywhere else on Apple TV, press and hold the Siri button Siri button on
>the Siri Remote, and speak.

You can search for apps by name, developer, or category.

Ask Siri. Say something like:

“Find Crossy Road”

“Find weather apps”

“What are some new sports apps?”

“Find apps by Apple”

Note: If you get movie and TV results instead of apps, try including “app” at
the end of your Siri request: “Find Crossy Road app.”

I stream Facebook live concerts and it would be cool to have them coming

RE: iPhone sanitizer

2020-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
I too would not buy one of these UV sanitizers to use on an iPhone, but for the
people who are extra concerned about germs, they may want to consider one to
use on their money.

When my wife was in college, she did an experiment for her biology class so she
could avoid the frog dissection.
She took several petri dishes and swabs and went to the bank and asked for some
money to take samples from.
The teller was quite interested and watched as she took swabs from a variety of
bills.
She found lots of bacteria, including Staff and Strep.
So, it is probably a good idea to at least wash your hands after handling
money, or if you want to go all the way, use one of these UV sanitizers on your
cash.

$65 from Mystic Access, www.mysticaccess.com
  or call (716) 543-3323.

airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep
space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was
young."

"Why, what did she tell you?"

"I don't know, I didn't listen."

Are there alternatives to the Staples ones that maybe talk or give audible

RE: iPhone sanitizer

2020-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
The below is from the apple.com on cleaning your iphones.
There is a separate section for each group of iphones. I suggest reading
trhough at least the section on your iPhone rather than stopping after the
first paragraph.

Cleaning your iPhone

Learn how to clean your iPhone.

Is it OK to use a disinfectant on my iPhone?
Using a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe or Clorox Disinfecting Wipes, you may
gently wipe the exterior surfaces of your iPhone. Don't use bleach. Avoid
getting moisture in any openings, and don't submerge your iPhone in any
cleaning agents.

iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 11, iPhone
11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max

iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 11, iPhone
11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max feature glass with advanced textured matte
finishes. On iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, and iPhone 11, the textured glass
around the camera complements the polished glass. On iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12
Pro Max, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max, the textured back glass provides
an elegant look that is also tough, slip resistant, and feels good in your
hand. With normal use, the textured glass may show signs of material transfer
from objects that come in contact with your iPhone, such as denim or items in
your pocket. Material transfer may resemble a scratch, but can be removed in
most cases.

Clean your iPhone immediately if it comes in contact with anything that might
cause stains or other damage — for example, dirt or sand, ink, makeup, soap,
detergent, acids or acidic foods, or lotions. Follow these guidelines for
cleaning:
· Unplug all cables and turn off your
iPhone.
· Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth—for example, a lens cloth.
· If material is still present, use a soft, lint-free cloth with warm
soapy water.
· Avoid getting moisture in openings.
· Don’t use cleaning products or compressed air.

Your iPhone has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic — oil repellent — coating.
Cleaning products and abrasive materials will diminish the coating and might
scratch your iPhone.

iPhone SE (2nd generation), iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X,
iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7

Clean your iPhone immediately if it comes in contact with anything that might
cause stains or other damage — for example, dirt or sand, ink, makeup, soap,
detergent, acids or acidic foods, or lotions. Follow these guidelines:
· Unplug all cables and turn off your
iPhone.
· Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth — for example, a lens
cloth.
· Avoid getting moisture in openings.
· Don’t use cleaning products or compressed air.

Your iPhone has a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic — oil repellent — coating.
On iPhone 8 and later, the coating is on the front and back. This coating wears
over time with normal use. Cleaning products and abrasive materials will
further diminish the coating and might scratch your iPhone.

iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE (1st generation),
iPhone 5s

Clean your iPhone immediately if it comes into contact with contaminants that
might cause stains, such as ink, dyes, makeup, dirt, food, oils, and lotions.
To clean your iPhone, unplug all cables and turn it
off. Use a soft, slightly damp,
lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don't use window cleaners,
household cleaners, compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia, or
abrasives to clean your iPhone. The front glass surfaces have an oleophobic
coating. To remove fingerprints, wipe these surfaces with a soft, lint-free
cloth. The ability of this coating to repel oil will diminish over time with
normal use, and rubbing the screen with an abrasive material will further
diminish its effect and might scratch the glass.

To clean the Home button (allowing Touch ID to work optimally), wipe it with a
soft lint-free cloth.

iPhone 5c

Clean your iPhone immediately if it comes into contact with contaminants that
might cause stains, such as ink, dyes, makeup, dirt, food, oils, and lotions.
To clean your iPhone, unplug all cables and turn it
off. Use a soft, slightly damp,
lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings. Don't use window cleaners,
household cleaners, compressed air, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia,
abrasives, or cleaners containing hydrogen peroxide to clean your iPhone. The
front glass surfaces have an oleophobic coating. To remove fingerprints, wipe
these surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth. The ability of this coating to
repel oil will diminish over time with normal use, and rubbing the screen with
an abrasive material will further diminish its effect and might scratch the
glass.

RE: Money Reader Alternatives

2020-12-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Apps come and apps go, I have been an iPhone user for 10 years and have this
seen many times. There comes a point when an old, unsupported app just won't
work any more or it won't be available any more for download on a new phone and
in this case it's no use to cry over spilled milk, just move on and use
something else. It's rare that there isn't some sort of direct replacement
which works just as good or better.

Funny you should ask. I've not used them, but in the November issue of Access

One model

Surprisingly Funny pronunciation with Samantha

2020-12-01 Thread R Van Lant
Hi,
I'm pretty patient with funny synthesizer pronunciations, but am really
surprised by one I just ran across using Samantha, given that this is Apple's
primary voice. Whether on the calendar or in the body of emails, (the two
places I've run into this so far), Samantha is pronouncing "Day" in New Year's
Day in some drawn out weird way. It does not do it on Christmas Day or Labor
Day. I recall noticing the problem also with "Good Friday", so created a
pronunciation correction for that a while ago.
Only Samantha and Samantha Enhanced do it, I've changed to the Siri female and
Fred voices and the problem goes away. Are you as surprised s I am on this?
Any idea what the synthesizer could possibly be trying to say?

Running IOS 14.2 on an SE 202, but the Good Friday thing was present when on my
old 6S with versions of IOS 13.

Hi,

I received an amazon giftcard, and I know that I am supposed to be
able to scan the code using the amazon app to add the giftcard to my

scanning?

In other words are there any tricks to loading an amazon giftcard
using the amazon app?

No, there is no message.
Just launch the app and point the back camera at the bill from about 4 to 6
inches above the bill.
You can go into the iPhone Settings, Eyenote, and have some options shown in
the app for when you might want vibrations instead of speech, etc.

Two More Things About the iPhone Sanitizer

2020-12-01 Thread Shirley Baker
If you have the one with aromatherapy, you can put a drop of essential oil in
there should you want your device to smell good but I never use that. Also, you
can use it to sanitize your apple watch. I have done that.

Blood pressure cuff compatible with Health app

2020-12-01 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. I'm probably repeating another common topic here. I've been
recommended to get a blood pressure cuff from one of my specialist
doctors. I would like one which is compatible with the Health app and
of reasonable price, as in not too expensive but gets good and
accurate readings. Any thoughts?

Best,
Wayne Merritt

RE: Blood pressure cuff compatible with Health app

2020-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
I'll list two that have received positive comments on this list before:
the QardioArm, I'll paste the link to their site below, which has a 30% off
coupon right now, but it is also sold at Target, Best Buy, Amazon and
Walgreens. The coupon code is BF30, which should bring it down to about $70
instead of $100.
https://www.getqardio.com/qardioarm-blood-pressure-monitor-iphone-android/
Another one is the WITHINGS Smart Blood pressure Monitor, which is also about
$100, but may have a coupon as well, etc.:

Thanks the voiceDream Scanner worked, and I found the claim code, but
the amazon app and website both have a non-accessible captia in order
to process the card :( Both the app and website need me to enter the
characters in the shown image so I guess I will need some sighted
help.

RE: using headphones with the iPhone

2020-12-01 Thread CJ & AA MAY
I have the bag standard headphones for the iPhone, with the little mic and the
switch where you can adjust volume etc. Any ideas why it isn’t working now with
my iPhone and yet will with my Milestone and other mp3 devices? I’m wondering
whether it has anything to do with the recharging case which I bought a couple
of months ago and whether this is stopping a firm connection?

I’d try removing the case and seeing if that makes a difference.

Re: How Do You Get Eyenote to Work?

2020-12-01 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Shirley, I want to let you know that you are not the only one who has a problem
getting eyenote to work consistently. The replies you have received as to how
to get it to work are correct, but for whatever the reason, I can't get it to
work consistently. I have discovered that it has to do with the lighting in the
area where you want to get it to work. On my iphone 6, it was really bad, the
only way I could get it to work consistently was to go outside in the daytime,
I am not kidding about that. On this SE 20, it isn't that bad, but I still
sometimes have to get really near a lamp or make sure the area is well lighted
for reliable results. I do miss money reader. It had a low light mode, I don't
know if it activated the flashlight or what, but I could sometimes get it to
work when there was very little light. Now, I mainly use Seeing AI to identify
currency.

Now, I mainly use Seeing AI to identify
currency.

RE: iPhone sanitizer

2020-12-01 Thread Simon A Fogarty
I’d only use them on a screen protector of a phone,
I’ve seen what can happen to an iMac screen when alcohol is used to wipe it
down,

But just wiping your phone down with a damp cloth is all you need really,

Put it this way,

You wipe your phone down with a wipe of any kind,
You then put it in your pocket and grab a door handle or stair rail or grab
handle of a bus / public transport and your hands are again covered in bacteria

Your phone is a small carrier of this kind,
But good luck to those that want to spend the money on such things.

I’ll just sit here and keep picking my nose and scratching my butt.

What do all of us touch thousands of times every day? Our smartphones or

Two unique models available from Mystic Access offer voice prompts to tell you

RE: How Do You Get Eyenote to Work?

2020-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
I just did a little test.
I have the Light Detector app on my phone.
I went into a closet with no light at all and of course, EyeNote did not read
anything.
I stepped into the dorrway of a bathroom that had no lights on, but has one of
those frosted glass windows so a little light comes into the room.
At the dorrway, with the Light Detector app on, it reported about 20% light
saturation.
At that level, EyeNote recognized a dollar bill almost instantly.
So my conclusion is, that you only need a little bit of light to get EyeNote to
work.
Or of course, use Seeing AI which can use the camera light.

Yeah looks to be fine,

I just downloaded it
It appears to be a vmware product and incorporates with exchange etc

A quick look at the boxer workspace 1 app which is what it’s called on the app
store seems to show it as being accessible with voiceover

So I’d say give it a go ad see how you get on,

If it doesn’t work then let the company know and they surely can come up with
other options for you with similar security

I’m actually going to have a play around with this and see what it’s features
are like.

I don't doubt that you can get it to work under those conditions, but it won't

At the dorrway, with the Light Detector app on, it reported about 20% light
saturation.
At that level, EyeNote recognized a dollar bill almost instantly.
So my conclusion is, that you only need a little bit of light to get EyeNote to
work.
Or of course, use Seeing AI which can use the camera light.

Now, I mainly use Seeing AI to identify
currency.

Re: How Do You Get Eyenote to Work?

2020-12-01 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
I've had pretty good success with it. I just had to make sure our
kitchen light was on and no problems. I put the bill on the table,
opened the app, and had my phone about six inches above the bill and I
gradually moved my iPhone closer towards the bill and again, no
issues. It told me the bill with no issues.

I am sorry you cannot get it to work. For me, I only need the phone to be 4 to

Yeah I downloaded it and setup my main email account,

It’s very very usable which now knowing it’s a vm ware product doesn’t surprise

Plus it works defaultly with a vm Ware email system plus,
Exchange, gmail and a few other systems.
So I would happily say it’s a great option for an alternate email client for
people.

RE: Money Reader Alternatives

2020-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Simon,
EyeNote is for US only.
Seeing AI and I think TapTapSee work with other currencies.
Cash Reader is the best for having lots of currencies.
If I didn't only have to deal with US money, I'd buy Cash Reader for sure.
If you read the details on the app store page, they list out all the currencies
and languages it works with.
Quite impressive.

Re: how do I sen an email to any AT&T wireless phone?

2020-12-01 Thread Richard Turner
>From a quick web search:

It is not commonly known that a text message can be sent to a person's cell
phone from a computer through an email account. Most cell phone carriers offer
free Short Messaging Service, or SMS, and Multimedia Messaging Service, or MMS,
gateways. These gateways convert emails into mobile phone messages. AT&T has a
gateway for both SMS and MMS messages. By following a few steps, you can send
short messages to someone's AT&T cell phone without stepping away from your
computer.

Step 1

Acquire the 10-digit cell phone number--area code included--for the person
receiving the message.

Step 2

Log into your email account and draft the message you want to send. Draft the
message in the same way you'd draft an email. AT&T allows 160 characters for an
SMS message. The characters used in the subject line are included in the 160
characters. If the message contains more than 160 characters, the message will
be split and the recipient will receive the message in more than one text.

Step 3

Attach media files that you want to send. To attach a media file, use the
attachment tool in your email program in the same way you'd attach files to an
ordinary email. Media includes video, image and audio files. The size of media
that can be accepted is cell-phone specific.

Step 4

To send an SMS message through the AT&T network, type the recipient's 10-digit
phone number before the carrier gateway @txt.att.net in the address window. To
send an MMS message, use the carrier gateway @mms.att.net. For example, if
sending an SMS message to cell phone number 1234567890, the "To:" line in the
address bar will read
"To:1234567...@txt.att.net". If sending an MMS
text to the same number, the "To:" line will read
"To:1234567...@mms.txt.net".

Step 5

Hit the send button. Sending a message to a cell phone is the same as sending
an email to another email account. The recipient should receive the message on
his cell phone in the form of a text.

In accessibility of the Hulu app on the phone

2020-12-01 Thread Mary Otten
I thought I had been hearing people say that the Hulu app has become much more
accessible. I signed up for the deal they had over the last long weekend, but I
am not finding it to be particularly accessible. If I open the app, I am in the
home tab by default. If I double tap on TV shows, everything that comes up on
the TV show screen has no label. You have two choices for each show, details
and more options. But the title of the show is never mentioned. If that’s
someone’s idea of Accessibility, it’s not mine. What am I missing? That’s an
absolute showstopper. I’m not going to double tap on every stupid thing on the
screen just to try defined out what shows are available. That’s ridiculous.

after shockz quality

2020-12-01 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi lists,

I'm taking a look at bone conduction headphones as an option to listen while
I'm out walking,

I've been looking at the after shockz treks air
And the new After shockz aeropex

But as I'm not able to check the quality of sound I thought I'd see what people
who have used these things, what they think of the sound quality,

I'm interested in things such as how much vibration is there against your cheek,
Is the base high or low?
And do they have good volume or are they normally pretty quiet at a half volume
point?

And what type of battery life are people getting out of these devices?

Cheers for any information folks might have.

Cheers.

If you are thinking of them for anything but speech, you will likely be
disappointed. They are not great for music. The vibration is not bad, but I
only used them for a couple of days. The Aeropex get about 8 hours on a charge,
which are the ones I tired I had high hopes for them, but even though they were
a better fit than the prior models, they were still rather tight on my head.
But, as always, sound quality is in the ear of the beholder. If you can get free

Hi Simon,

This is an item a person needs to try out for themselves. As our esteemed
colleague, Richard Turner stated, the, " sound quality is in the ear of the
beholder."

I only use my Trekz Air for talking / texting so I can't comment about
listening to music or any other type sound file you might want to listen to
but, they sound just fine to me. Experimentation is a must as far as where
you will hear the best in regards to the speaker placement on your jaw bone.
There are times where I've had to put the little speakers into my ear hole
because of distracting noise going on around me.

The Trekz Air has a built in equalizer but, since I haven't really played
around with it, the equalizer that is, I can't comment on that.

Overall for my purposes, the Trekz Air is an excellent headset.

Stay safe and take care. Mike.

Hello,

I own the Aeropex, and find the audio to vibrate less.

It is important to note that users who get these kinds of headsets should
never expect audio quality. They should use the tool for its intended
purpose. Bone conduction is great for hearing your surroundings while also
hearing audio, and is really great for use with GPS apps and such while
walking about or on a bus. Bone conduction is not, nor, in my view, will it
ever be a great audio source such as a high-end headset.

Also, if you would like to maximize the quality of the audio from the
headset, you should use the included foam ear mufflers. This defeats the
purpose of the bone conduction, but is good enough when you wish to have a
bit better audio quality.

Thanks.

I cannot get my orbit writer to pair properly with my iPhone 6s and I’m using iOS 14.2

2020-12-01 Thread 'Jerry Mader' via VIPhone
Hi folks. I’m wondering if anybody else can help me with this I have the orbit
writer by orbit research. And I’m on able to get it repaired properly using the
SRP protocol

And I’ve tried everything from resetting my entire phone to restoring my phone
to upgrading the orbit writers firmware, to resetting the orbit writer and no
luck. It will not pair. It actually gets going to pair but then it disconnects.
And it still shows up in the phone as orbit Reader 20 but it doesn’t wanna
connect it keeps saying disconnected because it’s not paired properly. I don’t
know what to do. I’ve tried getting a hold of orbit research but they don’t
answer their phones and I’m getting really frustrated. Does anyone have any
idea on what I can do here I really enjoyed using this keyboard when it used to
work. It stopped working today all of a sudden and I don’t know why. Anyone’s
help would be appreciated. Thank you

I’m interested in things such as how much vibration is there against your cheek,
Is the base high or low?
And do they have good volume or are they normally pretty quiet at a half volume
point?
And what type of battery life are people getting out of these devices?
Cheers for any information folks might have.
Cheers.

RE: In accessibility of the Hulu app on the phone

Mary,
I agree with you. I signed up for it when it first started coming out with the
deal that comes with Spotify. It bites with accessibility.

Subject: In accessibility of the Hulu app on the phone

RE: after shockz quality

2020-12-01 Thread jasmine.kotsay
Hi,

I have the Trekz Air, and I like them, but not for music. It’s sad that they
cost so much, but the music quality doesn’t always feel that great.

Hi lists,

I’m taking a look at bone conduction headphones as an option to listen while
I’m out walking,

I’ve been looking at the after shockz treks air

And the new After shockz aeropex

But as I’m not able to check the quality of sound I thought I’d see what people
who have used these things, what they think of the sound quality,

I’m interested in things such as how much vibration is there against your cheek,

Is the base high or low?

And do they have good volume or are they normally pretty quiet at a half volume
point?

And what type of battery life are people getting out of these devices?

Cheers for any information folks might have.

Cheers.
