Re: Kindle Books On The iPhone?

2020-12-07 Thread Michael Feir
Hello Joy. Perhaps, my insomnia will actually be useful here. I have well
over 2000 Kindle books and read them exclusively on the Kindle app on my
iPHONE. The app is set up with a different overall style than the Books app
but it offers a wonderful reading experience when you grasp the basics.
I've written extensively about the Kindle app in my guide. It's called
Personal Power: The iOS Edition. It's free to everyone and available in
several formats. I recommend the Epub version. It works well in the Books
app or even better in the Voice Dream REader app if you have that. The
guide has a section called REad All ABout it. This covers a number of book
reading apps including a detailed look at the Kindle app. You can obtain
the guide from the Dropbox folder I've put it in. I've pasted the link to
the folder below. If that proves to be troublesome for you, I'm happy to
personally send you a copy. The audio narrated versions are too large for
that but the Epub and other document formats are easy to send around. The
link is:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/soubx9x41xjsxo8/AAC0K5acw10d45Ib6g6ItWPLa?dl=1

I hope this proves useful and that you will be able to master the Kindle
app. It's well worth learning how to use. Kindle prices are often much
cheeper than Apple Books especially if you watch for daily deals and other
sales.

Getting the new Macbook air with silicon

2020-12-07 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,
I’m lucky enough to be getting this for Christmas. It will arrive with Big Sur
installed and my old system was backed up to time machine with High Sierra. I
have some questions please:

•If I set up my new machine from a time machine backup can I just transfer all
my personal data and not downgrade back to High Sierra?

•Will this data transfer include all data such as email folders, apps installed
and such like?

•Will it include information such as email accounts and logins, Safari saved
passwords and autofill data?

I really could do without having to set up from scratch again.

With thanks in advance as always.

Ian

Re: KeyPad Not in Focus After Placing Phone Call

2020-12-07 Thread Steve Matzura
I had the same problem when I received a call but was required to press
a button to be connected. Sounds like a spam thing, but it was perfectly
aboveboard for the kind of call it was. I was trying to get in touch
with a delivery person who gave me the wrong package, and the way it's
done is you request help from the delivery service, and then you press a
button that says "Connect me to ..." the name of the person who
delivered to you. When you do that, your phone rings and you're required
to answer the call and press 1. I'll make this change and hopefully
it'll solve my problem next time. Frankly, I hope there won't be a "next
time". LOL.

Re: Unlocking the iPhone 12 Mini

2020-12-07 Thread Richard Turner
All iPhones can be locked, with or without a passcode or face ID. Locking just
means putting it to sleep, or allowing the autolock to take affect

Just tap the power button once, and it is locked.
You simply do the one finger slide up from the bottom to the first vibration to
unlock any phone without a home button.
Why she cannot do that the same as on her XR, seems odd.
not using a passcode or Face ID just means anyone can use the phone and reset
it, etc. .

"You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon
airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep
space, that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was
young."
"Why, what did she tell you?"
"I don't know, I didn't listen."

The following is what I wrote in my previous email on this thread
TranslatePhoto is an app you may like to try. . The main purpose of this
app is to scan and OCR from a language and translate it to another but
you can definitely read the source language Text without translating it to
another. The app does have a free version. And it does support Arabic
 and many other eastern languages

Re: QARDIOARM blood pressure monitor?

2020-12-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
For those interested, I ordered my QardioArm from Amazon. I got a
bundle of the QardioArm, a carrying case and an 8-pack of triple A
batteries for $106. There was about an $8 added taxes and fees, but
not too bad compared to the full price from the Qardio store/app. What
sold me on this monitor was that it has Apple Watch compatibility.

Be well,
Wayne Merritt

Re: SuperSense is on sale, is it worth buying?

2020-12-07 Thread Shane Lowe
Hi there,
My name is Shane, and I work for Supersense. Thanks so much to all of
you who have been looking into the app!
Yes, our goal is to support as many languages as possible, and while
the processing isn't perfect for each one yet, the app currently has
the capability of scanning any written language with better results
than I have seen in any other app. For clarification, I am a totally
blind iPhone user.
We're also working on the app regularly. For many of us, Supersense is
our full-time employment, and we are really dedicated to the project.
We tend to put out updates once every two weeks, and for the next
little bit we're battening down the hatches and focusing on
solidifying the features we already have to make for the best user
experience. Of course, any new features we develop are included in the
lifetime cost of the app, so you won't have to pay for Supersense more
than once.
Please let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks again
for your interest! :) You are also welcome to request a call from the
app, where you can get free technical support and training.

Re: Accessible Jeopardy game app for iPhone?

There is a game called something like World Jeopardy which I
downloaded and is mostly accessible. I haven't messed with it lately,
but from what I recall, I was able to choose categories and answers. I
think it was free to download.

Hi there,
I sent you a message last night, but wasn’t sure if you saw it so I thought I
would reply again I love love love love love super sense did I say I love the
app? The only problem I have is that I just sent for a lifetime subscription
not realizing that your prices would be reduced it is definitely worth the
money but I wish I had waited and could have gotten it at a lower cost.
I tell as many people as I can about the app and encourage them to try it.
Have a wonderful holiday.

Re: Kindle Books On The iPhone?

2020-12-07 Thread Alan Lemly
Hi Joy,

I'll say right upfront that I haven't fully climbed the Kindle learning curve
but I understand your issues after playing with it just now. I would suggest
that you execute the Library button which I believe is second from the left on
the Kindle main screen bottomline toolbar. After doing so, you should have a
list of books in your Kindle library on the screen. Double tap on the one you
want and you might hear something about it downloading if it hasn't been. When
the download completes, double tap the book again and do a two finger swipe
down to start continuous reading. I don't much care for the screen presentation
of Kindle books because accessing the text in order to move by words or to get
spelling does not appear to be available. Or as I stated, I don't use it enough
to know the tricks of using it. If I had a Kindle book I wanted to read, I
expect I'd just get my Echo to read it.

Good luck.

Alan Lemly

No I downloaded it on the iPhone, I don't have a PC. I did try the two finger
flick but all that got me was the word image repeated.

Re: Getting the new Macbook air with silicon

2020-12-07 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Ian,

You couldn't downgrade your new computer even if you wanted to because all
older operating systems are designed for Intel chips, not the new Apple ones.
However, the Mac includes software called Migration Assistant that lets you
restore from a Time Machine backup. I'm sure Migration Assistant is designed to
import your data, such as email folders, and whatever settings are relevant,
and to ignore system files from old operating systems. You may have some extra
set-up to do, but I would imagine most of it will happen automatically.

Best,
Anna

Re: SuperSense is on sale, is it worth buying?

2020-12-07 Thread 'Harry Bell' via VIPhone
Hello, Shane! I have a lifetime subscription and I look forward to developments!
One thing I cannot work out: when in instant reader mode, your app reads out te
first document it sees but if i want it to start reading a subsequent document,
it refuses to budge and insists on talking about te first document. How do I
start a new instant scan? And are there some tutorials I have not located?
Thanks
Harry

Re: Accessible Jeopardy game app for iPhone?

2020-12-07 Thread Shirley Baker
If you have one of the echo devices, you can just ask her to enable jeopardy.
If you have the Alexa app on your phone, you should be able to just ask to play
it.

Re: How to view/open EMail attachments from within iPhone?

2020-12-07 Thread Dave Clement
Hi,

You need to double tap on the actual attachment file name which is immediately
below the text of the email. Often it sounds like a bunch of numbers, other
times it has a normal name.

Re: SuperSense is on sale, is it worth buying?

2020-12-07 Thread Shane Lowe
Hi,
Thanks so much for the kind words; I'm so glad you're enjoying the
app. As always, please let us know how we can improve it to make
Supersense more useful.
Harry, to solve your problem, you can double-tap the stop button, and
it will switch to a start button. Double-tap that again, and you
should be going on a clean slate. I'm also reporting this to our
developers so we can get it sorted. You shouldn't have to use my
solution for long!

TranslatePhoto is an app you may like to try. . The main purpose of
 this
app is to scan and OCR from a language and translate it to another but
you can definitely read the source language Text without translating it
 to
another. The app does have a free version. And it does support Arabic
 and many other eastern languages

RE: Kindle Books On The iPhone?

2020-12-07 Thread Cris Ali
Reading word by word, or line by line, or character by character on kindle is
done the usual way by selecting character or word or line on the rotor. What is
not available is the ability to mark and copy text. I think Amazon disabled
this feature on kindle deliberately.

Good luck.

Chris, the document scanner is available during the free seven-day
trial of Supersense. If it isn't coming up for you, let me know and I
can reach out to you off list with a promo code that will allow you to
test the app a bit further. The same applies to anyone who would like
to continue testing Supersense.

Yes, our goal is to support as many languages as possible, and while
the processing isn't perfect for each one yet, the app currently has
the capability of scanning any written language with better results
than I have seen in any other app. For clarification, I am a totally

We're also working on the app regularly. For many of us, Supersense is

We tend to put out updates once every two weeks, and for the next
little bit we're battening down the hatches and focusing on
solidifying the features we already have to make for the best user
experience. Of course, any new features we develop are included in the
lifetime cost of the app, so you won't have to pay for Supersense more
 than once.

Harry, I'm glad it worked! :)
Chris, the document scanner is available during the free seven-day trial of
Supersense. If it isn't coming up for you, let me know and I can reach out to
you off list with a promo code that will allow you to test the app a bit
further. The same applies to anyone who would like to continue testing
Supersense.

Yes, our goal is to support as many languages as possible, and
while the processing isn't perfect for each one yet, the app
currently has the capability of scanning any written language with
better results than I have seen in any other app. For
clarification, I am a totally blind iPhone user.
We're also working on the app regularly. For many of us, Supersense
is our full-time employment, and we are really dedicated to the project.
We tend to put out updates once every two weeks, and for the next
little bit we're battening down the hatches and focusing on
solidifying the features we already have to make for the best user
experience. Of course, any new features we develop are included in
the lifetime cost of the app, so you won't have to pay for
 Supersense more than once.
Please let me know if you have any other questions, and thanks
again for your interest! :) You are also welcome to request a call
from the app, where you can get free technical support and training.

Hello, Shane! I have a lifetime subscription and I look forward to
developments!
One thing I cannot work out: when in instant reader mode, your app reads out
te first document it sees but if i want it to start reading a subsequent
document, it refuses to budge and insists on talking about te first document.
How do I start a new instant scan? And are there some tutorials I have not

If he doesn’t write the list with the answer about the price, I’ll pass it

Question About Using Echo Device with Older iPhone

2020-12-07 Thread Shirley Baker
My husband has an iPhone 5S. He has an echo dot that is of course connected to
it. He is not very good using his phone except for asking Siri to make calls
for him. I connected the dot to his phone. My question is he is thinking about
getting the classic blind shell phone. With that phone you cannot use any echo

2020-12-07 Thread Richard Turner
I see that now, but it would have to completely blow my socks off to spend $49
for an app for scanning, though I gather it does barcodes and such too.
I have Voice Dream Scanner and Seeing AI and between those two, I can scan and
recognize bar codes quite well.
If I get a promo code to check it out in its current version, I will give it a
full test of all its features and then decide if my socks are blown off, grin.

RE: SuperSense is on sale, is it worth buying?

2020-12-07 Thread Richard Turner
Shirley, here is the full description and What's New from the app store:
Description
Supersense is the smartest and simplest scanner app made for the blind and
visually impaired users to read any text format, currency or product details
from a barcode independently.

With the power of AI, Supersense automatically figures out what you are trying
to scan, guides you on how to point the camera, and reads the content in the
right format. Its unique design minimizes the time and frustrations of scanning
and reading text for a blind and visually impaired user.

Full features of Supersense:

- Smart Scanner: The app automatically detects whether you are trying to
quickly read a piece of text, a long document, a currency or a barcode.

- Smart Guidance: The app guides you on how to point the camera and finds the
best angle to have the most accurate results

- Quick Read: Instantly read the text presented in front of the rear camera

- Document: Read longer documents with the assistance of smart guidance. Once
the text has been recognized, use VoiceOver commands to navigate through the
recognized text and share it to other apps.

- Multipage Scanning: Scan documents with multiple pages simultaneously and
navigate through the text.

- Currency: Recognize currencies and hear the value of a banknote

- Barcode: Scan barcodes to hear the name and brand of the products with
additional information

- Object Explorer and Find: Scan your physical environment and hear about the
objects that are around.

- Import: Read and explore text from the images and PDF files. Also you can
send them directly from any other apps with using "Recognize with Supersense"
tool in your share menu.

- Read History: Displays your recognition history in a single screen.

Most features work without an internet connection so that the blind or visually
impaired user can use it in any situation. The app has full VoiceOver
accessibility support and is available in multiple languages. Whenever you get
stuck, you can always find our tutorial under Menu or request a call and we
will reach you to give personal training on how to use Supersense.

Supersense is developed by Mediate, an MIT-spinoff AI start-up based in Boston.
Mediate develops innovative computer vision systems with the support of the
National Science Foundation and the US Department of Veterans Affairs. This app
is just the first step in our mission to develop groundbreaking AI solutions
for people with visual disabilities. We have developed the app with principles
of human-centered design and with the assistance of blind and visually impaired
users. We also partnered with many organizations that help the blind and low
vision community.

If you would like any assistance or help, please email us at
feedb...@mediate.tech. We always love to hear ideas and feedback from the blind
and visually impaired community.

Subscription Plans:

Supersense has limited access to all features. If you would like unlimited
access, we have created subscription plans.

- Monthly Subscription: $4.99

- Yearly Subscription: $49.99

- Lifetime Subscription: $99.99

These subscription plans help us to continuously develop new features to
provide immense value to the blind and the visually impaired.

If you choose to purchase a subscription, the payment will be charged to iTunes
Account at confirmation of purchase. All subscription plans automatically renew
unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24-hours before the end of the current
period. Auto-renew may be turned off by going to your iTunes Account Settings
after purchase. The account will be charged for renewal within 24-hours prior
to the end of the current period. Any unused portion of a free trial period, if
offered, will be forfeited when the user purchases a subscription to that
publication, where applicable. If you don't choose to purchase a subscription
plan, you can simply continue using designated Supersense features for free.

You can read our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy from here:

We hope you will enjoy your new super sense!

Currently, Supersense handles columns slightly better than other apps
I have experimented with (Seeing AI, etc) but our research and
development department has created an AI model that handles them much
better. We are currently working on implementing this, so you will see
changes coming in that area.

Calendar questions

2020-12-07 Thread Anne West
I decided to enter some doctor appointments into my iPhone 8 calendar. Most
appointments are in the My Chart app but some are not. I'm having an awful
time. The calendar seems to be very different.

I tapped on the add button and entered the title of my appointment. The
picker items for the date and time were not there so gave up and asked Siri
to create an appointment. He did with no problem. I wanted to go into the
appointment and edit it, nothing doing. I tapped on the date with one event
but it wouldn't open for me to edit. So what am I doing wrong? I wanted to
add alerts but the event wouldn't open when I tapped on it.

Confused everyone? I am! The calendar is not voice over friendly now.
Pointers appreciated.

Anne

2020-12-07 Thread Wayne Merritt
You do need to have a SiriusXM account to use this app. The original
app recommended on this thread will use your Sirius information to
log-in to your account so you can listen.

Tracker for dogs?

2020-12-07 Thread regina alvarado
Hi, I will take the chance on this, though I figure nobody has used one of
these. I am looking for a tracking device for my phone for tracking two dogs. I
would like it to be accessible but failing that one I can show to someone else
who can then track them. If someone has used one of these please let me know.
Thank you in advance. Appreciated.

Re: Calendar questions

2020-12-07 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi Anne,

The calendar is VoiceOver friendly, but yes it is different. You now put the
time in with numbers with no colons. So, if you have an appointment at 1:00 PM,
you would enter 0100. Leave the colon out. Then you can select AM or PM as
needed. The date is a little different as well. You now double tap on the day
ou want. It ias definitely different, but I wouldn’t call it VoiceOver
unfriendly.

Supersense, initial impressions

2020-12-07 Thread Richard Turner
I've spent the last hour or so running SuperSense through its various modes,
thanks to Shane's promo code.

in the document mode, Pros: I like the way it prompts you with specific
messages, like move farther from the document; move an inch to the left, etc.
I like the music while processing, very nice.
The accuracy is very good.

Cons: like most OCR apps, it cannot handle columns. If it did, I would
possibly buy it.

Bar codes, Pros: Very fast.
Cons: it did not recognize a hardback book ISBN while Seeing AI's product
channel did. Otherwise, I think pretty even.

Currency, Pros: very fast.
Cons: I was scanning a $10 bill and when I moved the camera sideways, a couple
times after saying $10, it said $50.
That would be too confusing to someone who did not know or have another money
identification app to double check with.
Explore Mode, Pros: pretty quick and generally accurate. I could see this
helping someone in a hotel room find things like light switches, thermostats,
etc.
Cons: none at this time.

Smart Scan, Pros: very fast and pretty accurate.
Cons: it does not seem any better than Seeing AI's Short Text mode.

Quick Read, Pros: seems very fast. Also quite accurate.

No cons at this time.

Overall: I most certainly would never pay $100 for this app.
I'm doubtful I would even spend $50.

If I did not have other apps to get my scanning needs met, I would seriously
consider spending the $50, but I'm not in need of it right now with the other
apps I have.

I wish it would start each mode in the stopped position rather than immediately
begin trying to scan.

I will keep exploring uses for it and write if I have updates worth while to
add.

Using French Apple Magic Keyboard for English?

2020-12-07 Thread Fazil
Hi, list.

I saw a French Apple Magic Keyboard on Craig List.

Would I be able to use it for English typing exclusively if I purchase this
French Keyboard? Would the voiceOver keys be second and third from the left
edge in second row?

Thanks!

2020-12-07 Thread Cris Ali
You got lucky Man. I received no promo codes. I am interested in apps that
recognize Arabic text, and that was the reason for starting the discussion. I
was able to try the instant read on an Arabic text and the result was
disappointing. I tried to import a photo with Arabic text on it, the ocr
quality was okay, but not any better than what i got when I imported the same
photo to voice ocr which I got for free before the app became subscription
only. I am interested in the document scan, if I get a promo code for that. I
am also testing envision to see how it scores in comparison.

Reading Bar-Code in SuperSense?

2020-12-07 Thread Fazil

How can I read Bar Code using SuperSense?

The app asks me to point my camera to bar code, how could I point camera to
bar code if I don't know its location on the package?

Thanks!

Bar codes are usually near a seam on the label for cans, and on the bottom of
boxes.
Also, along the seam of bags.
It beeps while looking for the code.
Good luck.

Hi Ann,
It sounds like you ahve th month view, which is good, that is what I recommend.
What happens when it says selected and the number of events is tht the vents
are shown below the month calendar, say about half way down the screen.
Each event when there is more than one is on a separate line.
Once ou find your event, double tap it and that iwll open the event and details.
There will be an edit button when you want to change or add details.
I hope that helps.

in the document mode, Pros: I like the way it prompts you with specific

I like the music while processing, very nice.

The accuracy is very good.

Cons: like most OCR apps, it cannot handle columns. If it did, I would

Bar codes, Pros: Very fast.

Cons: it did not recognize a hardback book ISBN while Seeing AI’s product

That would be too confusing to someone who did not know or have another money

I Richard,

When I read your other email on the pricing. I took it to say it would be $99 a
year. Is this the way you read it? If that is the case it would be really
expenseve. I remember paying about $75 for KNFB as I thought I got it for a
good price. That app did not pan out very well. I am like you Richard. It seems
really expensive.

I’ve spent the last hour or so running SuperSense through its various modes,
thanks to Shane’s promo code.

in the document mode, Pros: I like the way it prompts you with specific
messages, like move farther from the document; move an inch to the left, etc.

I like the music while processing, very nice.

The accuracy is very good.

Cons: like most OCR apps, it cannot handle columns. If it did, I would
possibly buy it.

Bar codes, Pros: Very fast.

Cons: it did not recognize a hardback book ISBN while Seeing AI’s product
channel did.

Cons: it does not seem any better than Seeing AI’s Short Text mode.

Quick Read, Pros: seems very fast. Also quite accurate.

No cons at this time.

Overall: I most certainly would never pay $100 for this app.

I’m doubtful I would even spend $50.

If I did not have other apps to get my scanning needs met, I would seriously
consider spending the $50, but I’m not in need of it right now with the other
apps I have.

I wish it would start each mode in the stopped position rather than immediately
begin trying to scan.

I will keep exploring uses for it and write if I have updates worth while to
add.

Right now, it is on sale for half price. I'm not sure I'd pay $50, even as a

RE: Kindle Books On The iPhone?

2020-12-07 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I’ve been able to mark and copy text in my Kindle books. This may not be
allowed in all books though. To do it, use your roter to select character, word
or line and then flick up or down to find some text you want to highlight or
copy. Now perform a single finger triple tap. In the resulting dialog, at the
bottom, you’ll see two controls. Flicking up or down on the first control will
determine the left most text you’re highlighting and flicking up or down on the
second control will set your right most edge of your highlighted text.
VoiceOver will read the new text that you’re selecting as well as all of the
text that’s now selected. It’s a bit tedious but definitely doable. Once you’ve
selected the text your interested in, you can copy it or highlight it. Your
highlighted text ends up in your notebook for that book, along with whatever
notes you’ve taken. You can bring up your notebook for a book by just double
tapping inside the book.

Reading word by word, or line by line, or character by character on kindle is
done the usual way by selecting character or word or line on the rotor. What is
not available is the ability to mark and copy text. I think Amazon disabled
this feature on kindle deliberately.

Good luck.

Looking for a 10 band voiceover friendly equalizer

2020-12-07 Thread doug parisian
Well gentle readers, in my not too humble opinion, apple embarrassed
themselves with that unfortunate excuse under music they call an equalizer.

What I really would like would be a 10 band equalizer with the ability
to store at least five favourite configurations (or more.)  I see
several in the App store but am hoping not to have to try every one of
them.  I would like said equalizer to be independant of other apps but
would allow other apps to use the equalizer features.

I also want a Bryston 4B or equivelant amp for Xmas, BBG!
