It is also super difficult to reset settings and perform software updates,

Well, of course Apple TV stuff has it. And I believe I saw where Hulu has it. I
should go double check, because I know there’s at least one other service that
has it. I heard it the little sample when you go in for the AirPods Pro, you

Les, one question for you since you have them.

Do you notice when you have noise cancelation on, that the right ear still
allows sound through those microphones? Granted, it is much lower than on
transparency mode, but it seems odd to me.

I'm just wondering if this is normal.

Thanks,

One thing I am very pleased about is what they call Transparency Mode.

There are 6 microphones on the outside of the headphones. While you are
listening over Bluetooth to your Apple device, if you turn on Transparency

the sound quality of whatever you are listening to. Unlike other things I have
had that tried to do that, the sound is in stereo. So, if someone speaks to
you from your left side, you hear it on your left side.

Those microphones are used to assist with the noise cancelation mode so it can
tell what the outside noise is and counteract it. So, when Noise Cancelation

Les, one question for you since you have them.
Do you notice when you have noise cancelation on, that the right ear still
allows sound through those microphones? Granted, it is much lower than on
transparency mode, but it seems odd to me.
I'm just wondering if this is normal.
Thanks,

Richard

Subject: Apple Airpods Max, review after a few hours

I received the Airpods Max today and unboxed them and was surprised how very
sturdy and solid they feel. I know, I've heard about them, but holding them in
your hands for the first time, everything about them screams quality!

Now, everything I have read about the "smart case" which some people call the
"smart pouch", and I have heard some say "Smart Bra"; but I would go with
pouch. I don't know if they changed the material, but the descriptions I had
heard made me think I was going to have a mesh kind of thing that was kind of
stretchy like the afore mention article of women's clothing. However, this one
feels like polyurethane, or even silicon. My wife says it still looks odd, and
with the headphones in it, more like a purse, but it appears to be quite
sturdy. I gather it has no charge of its own, it just tells the headphones to
go into a deep sleep…

Now, as for the headphones themselves…
I am quite seriously impressed! Yes, they are heavier than the average
headphones but so well designed you don't notice that much after putting them
on.
Yes, they are warm. It will be interesting when the warm weather hits how much
I'll want to have them on.

But, if you want amazingly good sound, that kind of just works with Apple, they
are fabulous!

One thing I am very pleased about is what they call Transparency Mode.
There are 6 microphones on the outside of the headphones. While you are
listening over Bluetooth to your Apple device, if you turn on Transparency
mode, those microphones allow you to hear the outside world without diminishing
the sound quality of whatever you are listening to. Unlike other things I have
had that tried to do that, the sound is in stereo. So, if someone speaks to
you from your left side, you hear it on your left side.

Those microphones are used to assist with the noise cancelation mode so it can
tell what the outside noise is and counteract it. So, when Noise Cancelation
is on, the world is pretty much blocked out.

I have some Sonos speakers on my desk and when my wife turned on the TV in the
living room, the sound came over my speakers. Well, I turned on Noise
Cancelation, and heard nothing of the TV while I was listening to some music.
Between songs, I could tell something was on in the far background, but not
enough to identify it or be bothered by it.

Now, about the $35 cable to allow you to plug them into a standard 3.5 MM
earphone jack like on Windows computers, Victor Readers, etc. It is over
price. But, while you do not get the fidelity you get over Bluetooth when it
is running all of it processes, they sound fine for speech when plug into my
Dell laptop. I have to turn the volume up on the computer or the headphones
since they take more power to drive them, but I could see myself using them
with the computer for Jaws.
They apparently do have to be charged to use them with the cable even. Unlike
my old Plantronics Beat Sense headphones that can be used with the cable even
if the battery is dead.
But an

Well, of course Apple TV stuff has it. And I believe I saw where Hulu has it. I
should go double check, because I know there’s at least one other service that
has it. I heard it the little sample when you go in for the AirPods Pro, you
can just hear a little sample of what it sounds like. And it’s very impressive.
So I’m thinking that if it gets adopted on a wider scale, it could be quite
awesome. Of course maybe competing services won’t go for it, but why not?

Note you can change the volume direction of that crown, I made mine higher to
the back, as then it feels like I’m turning it clockwise, like you’d do on most
stereos. I’m impressed at your detailed correlation of all the mics and
transparency! Transparency on the iPod pro isn’t nearly as effective. I sort
of implied this on a post to Mac Visionaries, but not in as much detail.
Transparency on the AirPod Max is really approaching augmented reality
territory! Especially when you turn down the music.

I won't be getting any stimilus chec but I'm glad for those that did
get their checks. The apple max headphones just cost way to much

They do sound very cool. I'll probably save up for a pair of bose

are designed so well. I tried out a pair of sony xm4 headphones that
were supposed to be so good, but they look so cheaply made, I sent
them back for a refund.

RE: Apple Airpods Max, review after a few hours

2021-03-26 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Richard,

I am very impressed with the Air Pods Max as well. I am also surprised how
sturdy and solid these are. We had unusually warm weather today. It was close
to 80 degrees here, so I went out on our porch, put them on and listened to the
Cubs baseball game for a while. Then I received a phone call. The person on the
other end told me how clear my voice was. I had no difficulty hearing him as
well. I did not purchase the cable. I do have the pods working via Bluetooth on
my PC. I have to switch the sound source to them when I wish to use them on my
PC. I was informed I could use my voice to switch sound output, so I will check
that out. I still have set up to do for our Apple Tv’s, but that should proceed
without difficulty. They are expensive, but like you, I used a portion of our
Stimulus check to get them, except I am paying them off over six equal payments
on my Apple Card, as well as getting 3 percent of the purchase price back. Not
a lot, but everything helps!

Best,

Les

But an interesting note about the Transparency Mode when using them with the
cable. There appears to be at least one microphone on the right ear that works
all the time when the cable is plugged in. But, if you press the button that
toggles to Transparency Mode, all the microphones come on. It is nowhere near
as loud or clear as when on Bluetooth, but you can hear what's happening around
you more than with it off.

I plan to run them through their paces and see how long the battery does last.

There are only two buttons on the right ear. They are on the top on either
side of the bar that goes over your head.

The one on the side of the bar nearest your face is a rectangular/oval button
that toggles between

My wife is having the same issue on her iPad mini.
She did a web search, and there are reports going back a long way from people
having this very issue.
No solutions yet.
So, if anyone who does not have an Apple music subscription is having the same
issue of Siri insisting it cannot fine the music you want on Apple Music even
though its on your device and you are as irritated as I am, please write Apple,
and Apple Accessibility even though this is not strickly an accessibility issue.
I plan to go to www.apple.com/feedback and submit a report.

They are, and I hope you are sitting down, $549.
And if you want the cable to use them with non-Bluetooth devices its $35.
Apple Care is $59.
So, I'm very blessed to have been able to get them.

There are 6 microphones on the outside of the headphones. While you are

the sound quality of whatever you are listening to. Unlike other things I have

to. Unlike other things I have had that tried
to do that, the sound is in stereo. So, if
someone speaks to you from your left side, you hear it on your left side.

Those microphones are used to assist with the
noise cancelation mode so it can tell what the
outside noise is and counteract it. So, when
Noise Cancelation is on, the world is pretty much blocked out.

I have some Sonos speakers on my desk and when
my wife turned on the TV in the living room, the
sound came over my speakers. Well, I turned on
Noise Cancelation, and heard nothing of the TV
while I was listening to some music. Between
songs, I could tell something was on in the far
background, but not enough to identify it or be bothered by it.

Now, about the $35 cable to allow you to plug
them into a standard 3.5 MM earphone jack like
on Windows computers, Victor Readers, etc. It
is over price. But, while you do not get the
fidelity you get over Bluetooth when it is
running all of it processes, they sound fine for
speech when plug into my Dell laptop. I have to
turn the volume up on the computer or the
headphones since they take more power to drive
them, but I could see myself using them with the computer for Jaws.

They apparently do have to be charged to use
them with the cable even. Unlike my old
Plantronics Beat Sense headphones that can be
used with the cable even if the battery is dead.

But an interesting note about the Transparency
Mode when using them with the cable. There
appears to be at least one microphone on the
right ear that works all the time when the cable
is plugged in. But, if you press the button
that toggles to Transparency Mode, all the
microphones come on. It is nowhere near as loud
or clear as when on Bluetooth, but you can hear
what's happening around you more than with it off.

I plan to run them through their paces and see how long the battery does last.

There are only two buttons on the right
ear. They are on the top on either side of the bar that goes over your head.

The one on the side of the bar nearest your face
is a rectangular/oval button that toggles
between Noise Cancelation and Transparency Mode.

The one on the other side of the bar is the
round, Digital Crown. Like a large version of
the one on the watch. That is used for volume,
pausing and playing, and holding it to ask siri.

That is all I know so far.

Later,

Richard

Hey Richard,

The song at the YouTube link you provided is the song I lost but the recording
I owned is not a live recording. I’ll look around the Internet and try to find
another copy of the song. And, as you suggest, I’ll store it somewhere on my
computer as well as putting it into my iTunes library. Thank you and stay well.

Take care,

Hi Malcom,

I use GoldWave for my basic tagging needs and it is pretty easy.

You have to do that one file at a time, so in that sense, it can be a nightmare
if you have lots to do at one time.

I have found that Apple sometimes pulls CD data from a database with absolutely
stupid information and so after getting all my CD’s from 30 plus years of
collecting them imported and fixed in itunes, I only buy albums from Apple as
downloads.

The database they use is particularly bad for audio books on CD.

It isn’t their fault since they pull from some generic resource, but I had an
audio book that was about 20 CD’s in length and I think only the first CD was
tagged correctly.

That was a true nightmare that I ended up resolving by just buying it from
audible, so it was one file well marked up, grin.

.

Hello Richard,

Like you I have transferred music from a variety of sources to my iPhone. I do
have an Apple Music subscription and from my experience it makes no difference.
I have never had a track deleted for me.

MP3 tagging is a nightmare though as I am sure you will agree.

I do not have an Apple Music subscription though, if that matters.

The thing you will want to do is to make sure the song is tagged correctly,
which it probably is if you are getting it from another service where you buy
it.

Just to be safe, I would keep that file somewhere else than in your iTunes
library as a back up to be certain it isn’t going to vanish.

BTW, was the YouTube link I sent you the correct song?

I’d not heard of that artist before and am interested.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for the information. I’ve managed to find the song on music services
other than the iTunes store. If I purchase a copy from one of these services
and then load it into the Music app, do you know if iOS will at some point
delete the song again because it does not appear in the iTunes store? I’d hate
to spend money on the song again only to have it disappear from my iPhone
again. Thanks and stay well.

Take care,

Apple Airpods Max, review after a few hours

2021-03-26 Thread Richard Turner

My wife says it still looks odd, and
with the headphones in it, more like a purse, but it appears to be quite
sturdy. I gather it has no charge of its own, it just tells the headphones to
go into a deep sleep...

Now, as for the headphones themselves...

But an interesting note about the Transparency Mode when using them with the
cable. There appears to be at least one microphone on the right ear that works

toggles to Transparency Mode, all the microphones come on. It is nowhere near
as loud or clear as when on Bluetooth, but you can hear what's happening around
you more than with it off.

I plan to run them through their paces and see how long the battery does last.

There are only two buttons on the right ear. They are on the top on either
side of the bar that goes over your head.
The one on the side of the bar nearest your face is a rectangular/oval button
that toggles between Noise Cancelation and Transparency Mode.
The one on the other side of the bar is the round, Digital Crown. Like a large
version of the one on the watch. That is used for volume, pausing and playing,
and holding it to ask siri.
That is all I know so far.

Later,

Richard

HI alan,
Yes, Outlook is included in Microsoft 365, I just wanted to distinguish between
it and the stand-alone version.

I agree about Outlook groups. I did finally get one to kind of work, but I
mostly just use the ABC Groups on my iPHone when sending to a group, like our

Hi Richard,

Methinks you're right. That makes me feel better in that I wasn't messing
something up but it sure would be nice if they shared. I find Outlook contact

Me thinks they do not share groups.
I use outlook groups and have never seen them show up in ABC groups. You have
to create them within ABC.

Is Siri really that worthless?

2021-03-26 Thread Richard Turner
YOU have a hint in my subject line.
Until very recently, like today, after I got my Apple Airpods Max headphones,
if I asked Siri to play an album or a song on my phone, it would do what I
asked.

Now, all it can say is "I cannot find that on Apple Music." Well, duh? I don't
have an Apple Music subscription and Apple Music is off on my iPhone.

Maybe Apple thinks since you bought these very nice, expensive headphones, you
want to shell out a hundred or so dollars a year for their catalog instead of
listening to the some 12,000 song you already own.

I will be contacting Apple on this but I just wanted to put it out there.

Blow off a little steam you know.

That way, I will be polite to apple.
Later,

Richard

Voice control questions

2021-03-26 Thread dean martineau
I am experimenting with voice control using in SE 2020. I think the feature has
great potential, but there are some things I haven't figured out. For one
thing, how do you direct Voice control to accept spelled words when you need
to ensure proper recognition? I also find that I don't get any dictation
feedback. Jonathan MOSEN does when he does his demonstrations, and I wonder if
it's because of my phone. Anyway, I would appreciate any suggestions from
people who use this feature to manage email and text messages among other
things.

Yes, I know what you mean. I did finally connect them. Microsoft could not help
me, but another Apple rep not in accessibility did. I had to go down to my
headphones in System Tray and open that, and then the Air Pods were recognized.
Again, the major use with these will be for Apple products, that’s really what
they were meant for. Thanks.

Hi All,

I received my AirPods last night. They are working fine with my iPhone. I am
having problems connecting them to my PC. I powered off my iPhone to make
certain there was not a conflict. I called Apple Accessibility and we
eventually got them connected, but no sound comes from them when running Jaws
on my Pc. I’m not certain they are really connected, as they seem to vacillate
between connecting and connected. I looked in Sound Settings and do not see
them listed there. Has anyone been successful in using these with a PC? I will
also contact Microsoft Accessibility to see what they have to say. A little
disappointed thus far with this issue, but I do expect it will be resolved.
After all, they are Bluetooth headphones. I really want to use these with Zoom
on my Surface Pro 5. Thanks for any assistance.

Best Regards,

Les

Me thinks they do not share groups.
I use outlook groups and have never seen them show up in ABC groups. You have
to create them within ABC.
I'm using Outlook 2016 through Microsoft 365.

RE: Missing Song

2021-03-26 Thread Richard Turner
Hi Malcom,
I use GoldWave for my basic tagging needs and it is pretty easy.

Hi all,

I’m using a PC running the latest release of Windows 10. The lost song is
called Blood On the Banjo by Kate Lee with No Strings Attached. It no longer
appears on the iTunes store and that’s probably why it disappeared from my
iPhone. I think this really sucks. Thanks. Stay well.

Take care,

I may be wrong...It is my understanding that if an app, song etc is hidden, if
it is removed from the app store iTunes, even if you have paid for the item it
is gone forever. If I’m incorrect, someone please clarify for me.

Hi all,

A few years ago I purchased a song using the iTunes app. The song disappeared
from my iPhone several months after that. I tried to redownload the song but
no joy. The song no longer appears in a search with iTunes. Apple
accessibility support tried to find the song but to no avail. They suggested
looking at hidden songs and see if it got dumped there. Support said they
can’t help with looking to see if the song was put in the hidden songs list
because that has to be done on a computer. I tried to do that but I didn’t get
very far. I find the screens for finding hidden items to be difficult to use.
If anyone has some steps I can use to look through the hidden items screens or
any other suggestions I’d be grateful if you could pass them along. Thanks.
Stay well.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek

RE: Missing Song

2021-03-26 Thread Edward Przybylek

Take care,

Ed Przybylek

RE: babyshark ringtone anyone

2021-03-26 Thread Richard Turner
Here is one I have used.
It seems to work best with Edge but I used to use it with Firefox.
Be aware, they will pop-up adds for junk but if you close that window you
should be able to download your converted file.
You put in the URL to the youtube video and tab to the convert button and press
enter.
After about 30 second or a minute or three, depending on the length of the
file, if you arrow down you should find the name of the track and a download
link.

YouTube is a great place to find all kinds of music. I love heavy metal and
have made more than 100 heavy metal ring tones. When I find the song on
YouTube, I copy the URL and put it into an online YouTube to MP3 converter. I
then download the MP3 file and fire up the program
MP3 Direct Cut. I can make countless edits and it does not recode the file and
diminish the sound quality. I like that it allows for fades.
After I have 30 seconds of audio, I upload the file to an online converter to
put it in the M4R format. The M4R file is then downloaded and copied to my
iPhone. Apple backs up ringtones to iCloud so I will never lose them.

The music is iconic, unique, and catches the attention of everyone in the room.

The two finger double tap should work no matter where the focus is, even if you

Hi,

I have the latest IOS on my iPhone XR. When I receive a phone call the name
pops up like you'd expect and I can double tap to answer. However, if I touch
the screen in some way that moves the focus the caller and the answer button
disappear. The phone still rings but I can't figure out how to answer it.

Any directions would be appreciated.

2021-03-26 Thread Richard Turner
Can you go to the page with a computer?
Then press alt+d and then control+c to copy the link and paste it into an email.
I do not use facebook, so I cannot tell you how to do this all from the iPhone.

Trouble answering phone calls

2021-03-26 Thread rhs via VIPhone
Hi,

I have the latest IOS on my iPhone XR. When I receive a phone call the name
pops up like you’d expect and I can double tap to answer. However, if I touch
the screen in some way that moves the focus the caller and the answer button
disappear. The phone still rings but I can’t figure out how to answer it.

Any directions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Looking for a contact management system

2021-03-26 Thread Michael Feir
You might want to give Cardhop a look. It's made by the same developer as
Fantastical. Definitely a step above the basic contacts app included with
iOS.

Looking for a contact management system

2021-03-26 Thread dean martineau
I would love to find, for a student, a powerful and accessible contact
management system for the iPhone. The goal is to be able to create contact
groups. It would be ideal to be able to add a contact, perhaps a contact from
the native Contact system, to one or more contact groups. Does such a thing
exist?

The 30 second limit is no longer there. I found this out by accident. Was
making a ring tone of princes purple rain, synced the unedited version, and it
showed up in my ring tones, played the whole song too. My collection of ring
tones is below for anyone who wants them
