I have the tempo frames and I bought the extra orange lenses to protect my
retina. Swapping out the original black lenses was extremely difficult, so
beware if you plan to try this! Otherwise, the frames are brilliant

RE: Accessible stereo receiver with analog inputs with app or home kit?

2021-05-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
The Sonos Amp has 1 set of RCA analogue inputs and an HDMI input so it may not
be what Matthew is looking for if he wants multiple RCA inputs. Of course it
all depends on your approach to music nowadays, I find that with an Apple Music
subscription or, if you prefer, one from Spotify, Deezer or other music
service, there is little need for analogue sources such as CD players, but that
is still everybody's own and very subjective decision to make. I have Sonos
stuff all over the house and for me just asking whatever I want to play to play
from Apple Music is the ultimate in convenience.

Have a look at the sonos amp,

But really you're looking for a home theatre system which should do what you
want and if you get the speakers you want it could sound good as well.

Subject: Accessible stereo receiver with analog inputs with app or home kit?

Kind of a long subject line, but I'm looking for a stereo receiver with several
analog RCA inputs, able to be controlled either by an accessible home kit
interface or an app. Most of the articles I am reading are focussing on home
theater setup with massive surround sound features and video inputs. I think
about the fanciest I would get is one where you could have two sets of stereo
speakers playing the same thing. I read where a Marantz has an option to stream
to a Bluetooth speaker, so that could be an option for my second listening
area. This stereo is going to be used for things like turntables, cassette
decks and reel to reel machines, all input through RCA. I'm not sure if any
options already come with speakers, but I would want to upgrade the ones I have
now.
Thanks for any suggesttions on a very overwhelming subject.
Matthew

I have them and use them like this however depending on the volume of the audio
you are listening to and the traffic around you
It might not be always a good thing to have audio playing.

I've come close a couple of times to being hit due to not hearing the vehicles
and the volume wasn't that loud on my tenors or tempos.

But they are a great headset for doing what you are looking for.

RE: Accessible stereo receiver with analog inputs with app or home kit?

2021-05-01 Thread Simon A Fogarty

I bought the Bose Tempo Frames a few months ago and have no regrets. The
sound is phenomenal and the call quality great. Very easy to operate and
folks say they look great also. I am very happy with them.

RE: Accessible stereo receiver with analog inputs with app or home kit?

2021-05-01 Thread Richard Turner
You may want to consider the Sonos Amp.
But I've never had my hands on it which I would want to do if it were me before
buying or making sure you could return it easily.
You might check with any local audio/video stores to see if they carry Sonos
and could get one in to check out.

Re: Native podcasts app

2021-05-01 Thread Robert Hill
Hi All,

If you subscribe to the Applevis podcast, Thomas Donneville did one which
appeared this past Monday describing and demonstrating the native podcasts app
on the iPhone.

I haven't lisgtened to the whole episode yet, but from what I've heard so far,
he seems to do a great job of explaining a d demonstrating the features.

seeking Spell Checker

2021-05-01 Thread Vicki W.
Hi,

Does anyone know if there is a medical spell checker which can be added to IOS
that works across programs? In other words, instead of purchasing a medical
spell checker as you would for programs like Word on a computer, can you
purchase one that will work for most programs on IOS such as messaging, e-mail,
etc.?

Maybe something that can be added to the spell checker program that the
operating system uses as you would in Windows?

Thanks.

Thanks for any information in advance.

I don’t see a settings tab within the app. I went into Podcasts under the phone
settings and found episode display, but it doesn’t look like the full menu of

Native Podcasts app

2021-05-01 Thread William Outman
I am having trouble navigating episode lists in the native Podcasts app. I used
to know how to do this, and don’t know if I am forgetting a step or if there is
a new bug in the process with VoiceOver.
My example is searching for Airacast, which I found but could only see the most
recent episode. I see that this year’s episodes are listed but can’t navigate
to any others even when I use the see all button.
I just upgraded to 14.5 on my iPhone 8 Plus.

As long as I am somewhere where having the call on speakerphone doesn't bother
anybody it is not difficult to just take the phone away from your ear which
causes the call to go to speakerphone (as long as you haven't disabled this
feature). Then just swipe up from the bottom just like you would when you want
to go from any app back to the home page, you can then open the Messages app or
Contacts or any other app and do whatever you want to do while you are talking
to the other person on speakerphone. I have never had anybody ask me what I am
doing which means the microphone does not seem to pick up Voiceover, but if you
find it distracting to have both the caller and Voiceover on speaker you can of
course use a headset except then you have both the caller and Voiceover on the
headset which to me is no different than having both on the external speaker.

Hi, Carolyn. You can do this, but it is tricky. I usually use a headset as
has been suggested. I also try to adjust the volume of voice over so there's a
way to hear both the speech and the caller. Sometimes it helps to use a male
voice if speaking to a female and vice versa. You should be able to do all of
the things you listed while on a phone call. I've gotten texts before, and
depending on the volume, the Voice over usually drowns out the person's
speaking. Like I said, it does take some practice.

RE: Speaking of smart thermostats...

2021-05-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You should look a the Lyric series of Honeywell thermostats like the T6, T9,
T10 etc., they use the Honeywell Home app which is quite accessible. I haven't
played around with the schedule much because my wife and I are not keeping a
schedule to the point where it would even make sense to set one up. We also
have our Honeywell T5, this I think is a discontinued model, but it was very
inexpensive at $99 at the time) connected to Alexa so whenever we want to
change the temperature we simply ask Alexa to do so.

BTW, I just took another stab at the scheduling feature in the Total Connect
Comfort app that works with Honeywell thermostats, and I was able to adjust it
with a little tedious double checking.
But it is better than it was and it is mostly accessible.

Hi Mike,

We have had a VIP Talking Thermostat for years, well actually we have probably
had three or four of them due to issues with them. It is again not working
well, so we are now investigating smart thermostats.

Just curious, which smart thermostat do you have, and what do you find less
workable about it?

Thanks,
Pam

Hi Tracy,

We have 2 homes and we have a smart thermostat in 1, and a VIP talking
thermostat in the other. If we were to stay in 1 place I would choose the VIP
Talking Thermostat because of its ease of use and the speaking confirmation of
setting changes and instructions.

We have a Honeywell model that works quite well. The schedule section of the
app is difficult/not worth using with VoiceOver.

But, Once the program is set, you can do adjustments quite easily.

The Ecobee looks like a tech geeks dream but who wants music coming out of
their thermostat, really?

Check with your utility company, they may have some great deals on smart
thermostats.

I do not know, even with ours, if you can use Alexa to set a schedule. I have
not tried that as I am spoiled by having a sighted wife to do those things.

The one down side of smart thermostats is that if your internet goes down, you
would have to be able to use the controls on the device to make adjustments.
But, it will still work on the schedule I believe.

Hi all, I’m in the market for an accessible thermostat. I cannot decide between
a smart one or replacing my talking model. What has been your experience with
smart thermostats and their apps? Some of the below models in the article seem
way too feature rich for my needs. I mainly want to set programs, be able to
adjust temperature, or turn off the system.

Thanks for any assistance. Hope you find the article useful.

Hi Richard,
I only have the one language as my default. I’ve never added language to the
rotor either. Although, in the rotor a female’s voice says English default, I
swipe up again, then a male’s voice says Australia, I swipe up again then
another female’s voice says US English. I think I made some kind of headway
when I went in to the language and region settings though, because at least it
now says in the rotor US English default instead of saying Australia default.
Although, I went back in to the language and region settings, and the default
was set to Australian. I selected English US as default, and I got a message
saying if I select US English, this setting will restart my phone, I still
selected the US English, but the phone didn’t restart, and I didn’t get any
message to confirm this setting such as saving the setting, so I just closed it
out. I went back and sure enough, US English is not set as my default though.
Although now in the rotor I do hear the US language, but the two other
languages are still there, and rather I’m reading the news, or just swiping
the voices will suddenly change! I only know one language and that is US
English, that is wy I wouldn’t have added language to the rotor. Apple says
they haven’t heard anyone else talking about this issue that I’m having! Can
you imagine! LOL! This isn’t good!

You cannot remove language from the rotor, it appears if you have more than one
language selected, that is, a rotor language as well as the default language.
So, if you only have the default voice, my understanding is, you should not see
Language in the rotor.

Just move focus away from the Language rotor. You can't remove the language
rotor, as soon as you have more than one language installed it's there so the
only way would be to delete all other languages except for Samantha if that

RE: Performing tasks on iPhone, while taking part in a phone call.

2021-05-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
