Mark on iPhone 13 from an iPhone 8 Perspective

2021-09-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I've enjoyed reading all of the comments on iPhone 13.

To say that I was disappointed that this year's iPhone models do not have
any kind of fingerprint reader, would be the understatement of the season.

So, as for me, I have updated my beloved 8 Plus to iOS 14.8, had a new
battery installed earlier, today, and intend to hold out for one more year
(smile).

Besides, not that I am superstitious or anything but I do not relish the
idea of using any kind of device with the number 13 being part of its name
(smile). It took all of my courage, back in the day, to install iOS 13!!!
(big Smile). Again, not superstitious, just careful (grin).

Mark

HomePod problem

2021-09-15 Thread Mary Otten
I have a stereo pair of HomePods which was working just fine yesterday. This
evening, I went to watch my Apple TV through the HomePods, and they are not
responding at all. Siri doesn’t respond. Touching the top of the homePod eels
no sound, and in the home app, I am informed on helpfully that this device is
not responding. No kidding. This device requires attention. But they don’t give
me any hint as to what kind of attention or how I might find out. I unplug them
and re-plugged them, and I got the sound that indicates that they came back on.
But they do not work at all, and I can’t find anything useful from Apple
support site. Does anybody have any idea what kind of attention the device
might require aside from a sledgehammer?
Mary

2021-09-15 Thread lenron brown
If I could I would probably go for that Sierra blue. There is just no
way I am upgrading my watch and phone right now though. Right now I
have the normal blue watch and blue phone.

2021-09-15 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hell I cant' remember correctlyt

It's either a two finger triple tap on the touch pad or a three finger double
tap on the touch pad.

Sorry I'm away from my tv so can't confirm that at the moment.

Explore mode? How do I access that feature? Sounds like it provides similar
capabilities to the review mode on a Fire TV device.

I'm really wanting something that will repeat information spoken by
VoiceOver. Sometimes Siri pronounces words oddly, and I need to hear it
again to make out what she said.

So if know review mode, maybe a way to repeat previously spoken information?

Good choice, especially with a 12 Pro Max there is even less reason,
 just
 1
generation behind with both phone and watch, upgrading every year
increasingly is becoming a thing of the past for most people other

Simon,
You have to remember, Apple makes up names for their colors.
My wife describes Sierra Blue as a light Sky Blue. All of their colors, she
says, are in the pastel hews.
It is only on the 13 pro and pro max.

The regular 13 and 13 mini have Midnight, which is basically black.
They also have a "blue" that is a darker blue than the Sierra Blue. Interesting
they don't make up a name for the regular blue...

No pink for me. I want a masculine looking iPhone. Midnight is the new black. I
would be open to purple though.

2021-09-15 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yeah I spoke to apple about the s7 watch yesterday,

I asked what the star light colour was and she said that it's a cream type
colour
A combination between gold and silver.

Which is what Richard said yesterday.

Again a colour to attract the Asian / Chinese market who like the bling colours.

My sighted wife, who is a quilter, says that Starlight is a creamy white color.
Think of the color of cream and that is pretty darn close.

That makes sense, because Starlight implies the color of the light coming from
a star, right?

What I remember from my sighted first 12 years, camping in the mountains at
around 8000 feet, when the stars seemed almost close enough to touch, cream is
a good comparison for starlight.

She also said all the colors are pastels.

Their purple she said is a light lavender. Pink, a lighter pink. Space Gray a
medium to light gray.

First of all we have four color schemes at our disposal. Be it azure blue to

color schemes Purple, Pink, Starlight, and Space Gray.

I think that means Apple is calling Gold, Starlight if you take them in

Purple: azure blue

Pink: golden pink

Starlight: Gold

Space Gray: sidereal grey

I always get space grey or black,

Then put a wallet case around it

To keep cards and things in there as well as great protection.

And yeah I guess I pretty much wear black or dark colours all the time. Or most

But that's more it's just easy to accessorise if I knew what to accessorise

Sierra Blue is only available for the pro models. The regular 12 and
12 Mini has a blue color, but some have described it as a lighter blue from the
dark navy blue of the iPhone 12. The description was the 13 colors had a pastel
quality to them. I liked the navy blue color in the iPhone 12. It would go
great with a black leather iPhone case. I want to learn more about regular 13

Hi LeDon,

I might have to revisit the slide to type setting. When I tried it with iOS 14,
I wasn't impressed but I was comparing it to FlickType which I will no longer

I'll play around with the slide to type setting a bit later and report back

Hi List,

I'm looking for an alternative to FlickType for when I have to upgrade my
iPhone SE 2020 or upgrade to iOS 15 and no longer have a working FlickType app.
Can anyone using Microsoft SwiftKey keyboard comment on its accessibility and
what on screen typing is like using it with Voiceover? I don't use a Bluetooth
keyboard and much prefer on screen typing with my iPhone especially when I'm
away from home and I'm starting to research other alternatives for when
FlickType is no longer on my device.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Subject: Initial thoughts after today's Apple Event

We just finished watching the Apple Event. I should mention that I have an
iPhone 11 and an Apple Watch 6 and my wife has an iPhone 11 Pro and also an
Apple Watch 6 and we also have whatever was last year's latest basic iPad.

I found today's announcements somewhat underwhelming, the new iPad Mini sounds
nice, but the Apple Watch 7 certainly isn't an upgrade I would consider and
neither is the iPhone 13.

A huge amount of time was spend on the iPhone 13 and 13 Pro phones new camera
systems and in the case of the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max also on the Pro Motion
display with its up to 120 Hz refresh rate, for most blind people this is of
little relevance.

I was also surprised that no mention was made whether Lidar now is in all
iPhone 13 models or still only in the Pro models, maybe I missed it, but I
don't think so.

Conclusion: no new Apple toys for us this year, but I look forward to next
year's announcement of the Apple Watch 8 and iPhone 14, maybe we'll see some
more compelling new features.

Of course there is still more news expected about Airpods which were not
mentioned with a single word so who knows, maybe I'll buy my wife a new headset
for Christmas, I am still holding out for whenever Sonos will release their
headset. Until then we'll save our hard-earned Dollars since I am also looking
at upgrading our 25-year old mid efficiency gas furnace with a new high
efficiency model and heat pump and that's a big one in terms of cost, if I want
to finance this from not upgrading our iPhones we'll have to keep our current
ones for another 10 years 🤣

Best regards,

Sieghard

Typically much cheaper to get insurance through your home policy, I pay around
$30 or $40 Canadian a year to have my iPhone 11 added as a separate item
without deductible.
This covers damage,, loss or theft and especially a phone like the iPhone 8
which you could buy used for $200 or less in my opinion is hardly worth paying
$120 a year, but everybody has to do what they think is best.

Richard. The extended apple care is through apple not my carier which is
Verizon. What happened was when my apple care expired on June 7 of this year.
I had paid $200 for the past 2 years. After it expired, I went to settings
under my name and under apple care, a message came up. It said that I had 30
days from when my apple care expired to pay for apple care if I wanted. There
were different options, and I chose the $10 per month option. I can cancel at
any time, however, I need to be aware, that if I do cancel that is it, and I
wouldn't have apple care any more. I'll pay the $10 per now, but if I get a
new iPhone, I could either continue to pay for the apple care on my olde
iPhone, or stop.

I definitely agree that people should go with what they want and what works for
them. My own experience is that my personal iPhone is a iPhone 11 and the
iPhone my employer gave me is an iPhone 7. As I move back and forth between the
two, I definitely now prefer a phone without the home button. I prefer the
extra real estate, which I think helps with braille input. When I’m grabbing my
iPhone 7, I’m constantly sliding up from the bottom or top and getting
frustrated that I’m not getting to my home page, app switcher , … I suppose you
could have a home button on the back or the side of the phone, which could give
you the best of both worlds. Even though I’m OK with giving up the home button,
I do miss touch ID. I’m OK with face ID, but there are just times I want to
unlock my phone without having to stick it in my face.

I hold my phone in my left hand and do gestures with the right, but am

Diane, I will say, I've tried those wipes, and they're almost impossible for a
person to do with one hand. Cuz there are some cases where I have to hold the
phone, in the same hand that I'm doing the gesture with. I don't have that much
strength in my right hand. So that's why I prefer the phones with the home
button. And believe me me, I've tried it on my mom's 11.

We did tune in a bit after the event started, did they say when iOS
15 will be released to the public? I assume it will be some time
mid next week, but thought I check to see if somebody knows the
 exact date.
I will probably wait for a few days past the official release this
time, last year as well as this year I just had no time to
potentially deal with public beta issues since I only have one
device and I need it to function and I am curious to read the final
verdict on Applevis regarding what the main issues still are in iOS
 15 before I upgrade.

not have the home button. It’s just a matter of sliding up or down to get what

Josh, is that $10 per month through your carrier?
Apple Care is only a one year extension on the waranty on a new phone.
Some carriers offer a protection plan that goes longer and costs a lot more
when you add it up over time.

I think that means Apple is calling Gold, Starlight if you take them in

 will
be released to the public? I assume it will be some time mid next week,
 but
thought I check to see if somebody knows the exact date.
I will probably wait for a few days past the official release this
 time,
last year as well as this year I just had no time to potentially deal
 with
public beta issues since I only have one device and I need it to
 function
and I am curious to read the final verdict on Applevis regarding what
 the
main issues still are in iOS 15 before I upgrade.

 Hello,

Does anyone know if the Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) have a review mode
for VoiceOver. Something that allows a user to explore the content
displayed in a grid layout of an Apple TV screen item by item.

If so, how do I activate it?

My Fire TV Cube has such an accessibility feature for Voice Guide. You
hold the menu button down on the remote control for 3 seconds to enable it.

I'm really wanting something that will repeat information spoken by VoiceOver.
Sometimes Siri pronounces words oddly, and I need to hear it again to make out
what she said.

So if know review mode, maybe a way to repeat previously spoken information?

Specifications for the 13 Pro Max, was about after the apple event ...

2021-09-15 Thread Richard Turner
According to the site I usually find by searching for specifications for
specific phones, the standby/talk time is 28 hours on the 13 pro max; 95 hours
of music playback,

Definition

Talk time is the officially quoted longest time that a single battery charge
will last when you are constantly talking on the phone.

The talk time is highly dependent on the cellular network environment such as
the distance to the closest GSM cell tower. Moving fast while talking (as in a
vehicle) also negatively affects battery life.

Manufacturers measure talk time in controlled conditions and the quoted numbers
are rarely reached in real-life scenarios. These numbers are best used as
reference when comparing phones from the same manufacturer because battery life
measurement methodology will probably vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Quite often you will find the Talk time field in the specification pages of new
phones empty as the

Re: Initial thoughts after today's Apple Event

2021-09-15 Thread Angie Nutt
Glad I’m not the only one who goes for phones with particular colours when
available. If I was planning to upgrade I’d have the 13 mini in pink. As it is,
I got 12 mini in red last year. Plan to keep my Watch 5 for another year at
least provided nothing goes wrong with it. Hope the pink mini doesn’t tempt me.
LOL

All the best
