bluetooth / wifi speakers

2021-12-13 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Hi lists,

I find myself in need of a replacement Bluetooth / wireless capable speaker

I have currently a number of sonos products around my house and I'm looking
Primarily at the sonos roam and move portable speakers

I just wondered if anyone has had an interaction with both if not either of
these,
Other than in a store / retail display stand?

They need to be able to talk with my iPhone and both these do with airplay 2 if
not Bluetooth 5.x.

I have one in mind over the other but would like to hear other peoples views on
these devices if possible.

Thanks.

Simon F

Re: bluetooth / wifi speakers

2021-12-13 Thread Richard Turner
I have the Roam and love it.
It works great as a bluetooth speaker for my iPhone when needed, otherwise is
plugged in as part of the overall system in our house providing music in a
small room.

Anyone familiar with the Nextdoor app for IOS?

2021-12-13 Thread Kathy Blackburn
My husband and I have moved, and I'm having trouble figuring out how to change
my address in the Nextdoor app. I am running the latest version of IOS and the
latest version of Nextdoor. I find one editfield and a combobox below that. I
need a street address with an apartment number. I can't work out how to enter
the needed information on the screen I'm seeing.
Thanks for any help.

Attention aware yes, it makes it easier to unlock.
Require attention, NO. Then you have to be looking straight at it, which is
not always possible if you cannot see the screen.

RE: face ID

2021-12-13 Thread Alan Lemly
Rita Howells posted an excellent article on Face ID to the idevi...@groups.io
list this morning. I’m pasting it following my
signature.

Alan Lemly

Face ID in iOS 15: Rita’s iDevice Advice for December 13, 2021 About Face ID:

Much of our digital lives are stored on iPhone and iPad, and it's important to
protect that information. In the same way that Touch ID revolutionized
authentication using a fingerprint, Face ID revolutionizes authentication using
facial recognition. Face ID provides intuitive and secure authentication
enabled by the state-of-the-art TrueDepth camera system with advanced
technologies to accurately map the geometry of your face.

With a simple glance, Face ID securely unlocks your iPhone or iPad Pro. You can
use it to authorize purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store, and Book Store,
payments with Apple Pay, and more. Developers can also allow you to use Face ID
to sign into their apps. Apps that support Touch ID automatically support Use
Face ID (supported models) to securely and conveniently unlock iPhone,
authorize purchases and payments, and sign in to many third-party apps by
simply glancing at your iPhone.

To use Face ID, you must also set up a passcode on your iPhone.

Set up Face ID or add an alternate appearance If you didn’t set up Face ID when
you first set up your iPhone, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set up
Face ID, then follow the onscreen instructions.

To set up an additional appearance for Face ID to recognize, go to Settings >
Face ID & Passcode > Set Up an Alternate Appearance, then follow the onscreen
instructions.

If you have physical limitations, you can tap Accessibility Options during Face
ID set up. When you do this, setting up facial recognition doesn’t require the
full range of head motion. Using Face ID is still secure, but it requires more
consistency in how you look at iPhone.

Face ID also has an accessibility feature you can use if you’re blind or have
low vision. If you don’t want Face ID to require that you look at iPhone with
your eyes open, go to Settings > Accessibility, then turn off Require Attention
for Face ID. This feature is automatically turned off if you turn on VoiceOver
when you first set up iPhone.

The technology that enables Face ID is some of the most advanced hardware and
software that we’ve ever created. The TrueDepth camera captures accurate face
data by projecting and analyzing thousands of invisible dots to create a depth
map of your face and also captures an infrared image of your face. protected
within the Secure Enclave: transforms the depth map and infrared image into a
mathematical representation and compares that representation to the enrolled
facial data.

Face ID automatically adapts to changes in your appearance, such as wearing
cosmetic makeup or growing facial hair. If there is a more significant change
in your appearance, like shaving a full beard, Face ID confirms your identity
by using your passcode before it updates your face data. Face ID is designed to
work with hats, scarves, glasses, contact lenses, and many sunglasses.
Furthermore, it's designed to work indoors, outdoors, and even in total
darkness.

directions say to tap on an item.

Whether or not Face ID works with an app depends on the app’s developers and
what they’ve programmed the app to be able to do. Open the Settings app.

Select Face ID & Passcode.

Enter your iPhone passcode.

Select Other Apps.

Green toggles show you which apps have Face ID enabled.

Note: when running VoiceOver, the green selection means that app allows for
Face ID and will not be “dimmed”.

A gray toggle means Face ID is disabled. Tap the toggle to enable Face ID for
that app.

Note: when running VoiceOver, the gray selection means that app does not allow
for Face ID and will be “dimmed”.

When you go to open an enabled app, you'll be able to sign in using your Face
ID instead of entering a password or passcode each time.

Re: message app has disappeared from my home page, and and also my phone says Doc and contacts together when going into home screen?

2021-12-13 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Pat,

It sounds like screen recognition may have gotten turned on on your home
screen. That could result in some items not being read and others being read as
a group. If you have screen recognition on the rotor, from your home screen
turn the rotor to screen Recognition, and flick up or down until it's off. It's
probably also in Quick Settings, which you can get to with a 2-finger
quadruple-tap. Make sure you're on a home screen before giving that command.

HTH,
Anna

FW: iOs 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2 released, article from the AppleVis blog

2021-12-13 Thread Richard Turner
Apple Releases iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2; Bringing Apple Music Voice Plan, App
Privacy Report, New Safety Features, and Bug Fixes
Submitted by AppleVis on Monday, December 13, 2021.
[Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team]

Apple has today released iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2 to the public.

Our experience is that the following accessibility bugs have been resolved or
significantly addressed in iOS 15.2 and iPadOS 15.2:

  * "Hey Siri" appears to now work as expected when your device is
locked.
  * if you have Safari configured so that its address bar is at the top of
the screen, you can once again use a Bluetooth keyboard or braille display's
keyboard to enter text in to the address
bar.
  * When using the emoji search facility to find and insert an emoji in to a
text field, when you double-tap on the desired emoji VoiceOver once again
announces the bane of the emoji that's been inserted rather than announcing the
last character that you
typed.
  * When using drag and drop to rearrange the position of a shortcut in the
Shortcuts app, VoiceOver once again provides meaningful feedback whilst
dragging regarding where the shortcut will be placed when
dropped.
  * On the Power Off / Medical ID / Emergency Call screen, VoiceOver no
longer finds and speaks erroneous UI elements if invoked when you have an open
app in the
foreground.
  * When using the Mantis braille display and changing the rotor setting with
up and left or up and right arrow, speech will no longer unmute itself if
muted.

At the time of writing we are unaware of any new bugs or regressions for blind
and low vision users in these releases.

As we always stress, we can make no claims on the completeness or accuracy of
our testing. We are only a small team, and it is simply impossible for us to
test all devices, configurations, applications, and use cases. Accordingly, to
help us ensure that the information on this page is as complete and accurate as
possible, please let us know in the comments of any additional fixes;
enhancements; or regressions that you find in your own use of iOS 15.2 and
iPadOS 15.2.

Rita Howells posted an excellent article on Face ID to the
idevi...@groups.io list this morning. I’m pasting it following my signature.

  Alan Lemly

Face ID in iOS 15: Rita’s iDevice Advice for December 13, 2021 About Face
ID:

Much of our digital lives are stored on iPhone and iPad, and it's
important to protect that information. In the same way that Touch ID
revolutionized authentication using a fingerprint, Face ID revolutionizes
authentication using facial recognition. Face ID provides intuitive and
secure authentication enabled by the state-of-the-art TrueDepth camera
system with advanced technologies to accurately map the geometry of your
face.

With a simple glance, Face ID securely unlocks your iPhone or iPad Pro.
You can use it to authorize purchases from the iTunes Store, App Store, and
Book Store, payments with Apple Pay, and more. Developers can also allow you
to use Face ID to sign into their apps. Apps that support Touch ID
automatically support Use Face ID (supported models) to securely and
conveniently unlock iPhone, authorize purchases and payments, and sign in to
many third-party apps by simply glancing at your iPhone.

To use Face ID, you must also set up a passcode on your iPhone.

Set up Face ID or add an alternate appearance If you didn’t set up Face ID
when you first set up your iPhone, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode >
Set up Face ID, then follow the onscreen instructions.

To set up an additional appearance for Face ID to recognize, go to
Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Up an Alternate Appearance, then follow
the onscreen instructions.

If you have physical limitations, you can tap Accessibility Options during
Face ID set up. When you do this, setting up facial recognition doesn’t
require the full range of head motion. Using Face ID is still secure, but it
requires more consistency in how you look at iPhone.

Face ID also has an accessibility feature you can use if you’re blind or
have low vision. If you don’t want Face ID to require that you look at
iPhone with your eyes open, go to Settings > Accessibility, then turn off
Require Attention for Face ID. This feature is automatically turned off if
you turn on VoiceOver when you first set up iPhone.

The technology that enables Face ID is some of the most advanced hardware
and software that we’ve ever created. The TrueDepth camera captures accurate
face data by projecting and analyzing thousands of invisible dots to create
a depth map of your face and also captures an infrared image of your face.
protected within the Secure Enclave: transforms the depth map and infrared
image into a mathematical representation and compares that representation to
the enrolled facial data.

Face ID automatically adapts to changes in your appearance, such as
wearing cosmetic makeup or growing facial hair. If there is a more
significant change in your appearance, like shaving a full beard, Face ID
confirms your identity by using your passcode before it updates your face
data. Face ID is designed to work with hats, scarves, glasses, contact
lenses, and many sunglasses. Furthermore, it's designed to work indoors,
outdoors, and even in total darkness.

Face ID for Apps on an iPhone:

How to Turn On Face ID for Apps on iPhone (iOS 15 Update).

Face ID can be used to unlock apps on the iPhone.

Save time by using Face ID instead of entering a passcode.

Avoid having to remember a unique passcode each time you log in to a
secure app.

How to Add Face ID to Apps

Note: When running VoiceOver, perform a one finger double tap gesture
when the directions say to tap on an item.

Whether or not Face ID works with an app depends on the app’s developers
and what they’ve programmed the app to be able to do. Open the Settings app.

  Select Face ID & Passcode.

  Enter your iPhone passcode.

  Select Other Apps.

Green toggles show you which apps have Face ID enabled.

Note: when running VoiceOver, the green selection means that app allows
for Face ID and will not be “dimmed”.

A gray toggle means Face ID is disabled. Tap the toggle to enable Face ID
for that app.

Note: when running VoiceOver, the gray selection means that app does not
allow for Face ID and will be “dimmed”.

When you go to open an enabled app, you'll be able to sign in using your
Face ID instead of entering a password or passcode each time.

RE: bluetooth / wifi speakers

2021-12-13 Thread Simon A Fogarty
Yeah was looking at both today,

The roam is very nice and small / compact,

About half the price of the move if I count in the wifi charging adapter,

But the volume doesn't scare the neighbours if I turn it up.

But in saying that the roam still has a nice volume and the battery life is
pretty much the same in both devices
Approx. 10 hours in each.
But I"ve not yet been able to try a move with my own music

Cheers though
It's good to know they work well off the phone.

I have the Roam and love it.
It works great as a bluetooth speaker for my iPhone when needed, otherwise is
plugged in as part of the overall system in our house providing music in a

RE: Two Apple watches

2021-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Use a wired headset so you don't deal with any Bluetooth delays and you can
easily call Apple Accessibility and also do stuff on your iPhone if they ask
you to do so. I use my iPhone all the time while I'm on a call to check a text
message or email which came in, even reply briefly if that is all it takes, to
write something down in Notes, to check somebody's phone number or address and
pass it along to the person I am speaking with etc. I guess probably one of the
few things you can't do while you are on a call is to use SIRI or use a
recording app.

Simon,

I have not called Apple accessibility, yet. I don't have a second phone to use
so that they can walk me through the process if what I want to do is possible.
I guess I'm going to have to call, take notes, hang up try the given advice &
if the advice works, then great. If not, I'll just have to call Apple
accessibility a 2nd time. Thanks anyway for your honesty & input.

RE: Tap to wake or not

2021-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have it turned on and like it, but you should just try as this is entirely
subjective and you'll get many who say they turn it off and others say they
turn it on. Even if 8 out of 10 say they turn it off then for me that is still
not the correct setting and if you happen to like it as I do then even if
everybody said you should turn it off it would be not good to do so.

Hi all,
do people have there phones set on tap to wake or just use the side button.
I found with my previous screen it would keep waking when it bumped anything
when in my pocket. However that was with a non Apple screen. I can’t remember
if it did that when the phone had a genuine screen.
Just am interested what people who keep the phones in there pockets. I suspect
ladies don’t have this problem if they put it in a handbag.
Thanks for your ideas.

RE: Tap to wake or not

2021-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
There is no shake to wake and in any case I still decide to wake my phone
because I have to tap it, but I find it a more natural thing to do for the most
part than having to press the side button. But as I said, it is entirely
subjective and depends on what you train your self to do just as in Windows you
can do the same thing often with a number of keystrokes and some prefer one
keyboard shortcut over another to do the same thing. You simply have to try it.
How it reacts to when the phone is in your pocket I don't know because just as
Richard I can't stand having my iPhone in my pocket, even with a 4-inch iPhone
5S I felt it was uncomfortable and I always carry my phone in a belt holster.

RE: My First Favorite Feature of Apple Watch Series 7

2021-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hey Richard, then when it happens as you are tossing laundry into the dryer, I
hope you continue to toss until it has finished counting down!
Personally I find this a bit too gimmicky for me, I have washed my hands for
50+ years without a watch telling me how long to do so and even during COVID
times it just becomes second nature to do it properly. But that is me and I
certainly don't want to discourage anybody from using it if they find it useful.

The little guy that lives in the watch can see what your doing 😊.

Another answer, it is magic.

The real answer is it uses the sensors in the watch to detect a specific
pattern. Likely it will get some false positives; like when it thought I had
fallen when I was tossing laundry into the dryer

People you trust and email still can see your email, but you can choose to
hide your email when you for example sign up for some newsletter or anything
like this. For this you can create an alias email address which you then use
and any email which is sent to that address you still get as you would all your
regular email, but if at some point there comes a time when you get too much
junkmail to that address you can just delete the address and it won't affect
your regular main email.

RE: bluetooth / wifi speakers

2021-12-13 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I have both and usually use the Move when I am outside and want a bit more
substantial sound. As long as you are within your WiFi range they both use WiFi
and the Sonos network to connect and don't act like a regular Bluetooth
speaker. Personally I still find sometimes that I prefer to grab my Logitech UE
Wanderboom 2 which if I have a book playing simply takes over as soon as I turn
it on and since it uses whatever the Bluetooth protocol is called for extended
range it works great anywhere in the house and even outside, it is supposed to
go up to 150 feet I think (about 45 meters) and while that might happen without
walls and such in between, I can easily have my iPhone on my charging pad in
the bedroom and be outside in the driveway which is about 20 or 25 meters away
and it works fine. The Roam is a bit of a battery hog especially if you don't
push and hold the power button to truly turn it off.

Hi lists,

I find myself in need of a replacement Bluetooth / wireless capable speaker

I have currently a number of sonos products around my house and I'm looking
Primarily at the sonos roam and move portable speakers

I just wondered if anyone has had an interaction with both if not either of
these, Other than in a store / retail display stand?

They need to be able to talk with my iPhone and both these do with airplay 2 if
not Bluetooth 5.x.

I have one in mind over the other but would like to hear other peoples views on
these devices if possible.

Thanks.

RE: bluetooth / wifi speakers

And just FYI, you can charge the Roam via a USB-C cable or stand it vertically
onto any Qi charging pad.

Yeah was looking at both today,

The roam is very nice and small / compact,

About half the price of the move if I count in the wifi charging adapter,

But the volume doesn't scare the neighbours if I turn it up.

But in saying that the roam still has a nice volume and the battery life is
pretty much the same in both devices Approx. 10 hours in each.
But I"ve not yet been able to try a move with my own music

Cheers though
It's good to know they work well off the phone.

I have the Roam and love it.
It works great as a bluetooth speaker for my iPhone when needed, otherwise is
plugged in as part of the overall system in our house providing music in a
small room.
