RE: Voice dream scanner lost its scan tone for me

2022-08-02 Thread Richard Turner
Check if you have a lot of apps open. Clear the app switcher.
If that doesn't do it, try rebooting.

Then, the usual last resort, delete the app and reinstall it, but that should
not be needed.

It sounds like what you’re saying is that you closed out the scanner from the
app switcher. You said you went in there and single finger tapped it which
means it closed. That didn’t do anything for me.

RE: Re: Is there anyway to back up bard books on a phone that you're getting rid of?

2022-08-02 Thread Christopher Chaltain
You can do this on an Android phone, or at least you could, but I don't see how
this would be possible on an iPhone. I think the developers can give you the
option of storing things in iCloud, so they would be backed up and then could
be restored. I guess they could also make storing your books on one of the
cloud storage options, like One Drive or ... they could also making streaming
an option, so you'd have access to them as long as they're in the BARD system.
Streaming would also allow you to keep your place in a book from device to
device.

Although I get why people might want to download and keep their books on the
phone, this isn't anything I would want. I don't need my books around forever
once I've read them, and I don't have a problem redownloading books I want to
read again. I do have a few reference books I keep on my phone, but like I
said, I'm OK with redownloading these whenever I get a new phone. Like I said,
this just works for me.

Lana. I just did a phone to phone transfer from an iPhone 8 to my new
13 pro max. My audible and bookshare books from voice dream reader transferred
over to my new phone just fine, but not my bard books.

A lot of that just depends on where you live, in my town you can order your
library card online. The town next-door you have to go in person… Each library
has their own rules. I guess…

RE: Question regarding Libby

2022-08-02 Thread Cristóbal Muñoz
I think only once I was able to get a library card without having to get it in
person. I was just lucky that I spoke to a nice librarian in Riverside County
who after I explained my travel situation issued me a card without me having to
go to a local branch. That's always the biggest challenge. You can always get a
temporary card online, but that's good for maybe a month or so. Living in So
Cal does offer that benefit that we have so many library systems close by, but
still, it can be a real hassle and barrier if you have to go in person to get a
card. Some libraries partner with other libraries to make their collections
available. The San Bernardino County library system is separate from the city
of San Bernardino library. The city library collection itself is pretty puny
and not all that impressive, but if you have a San Bernardino city public
library car, you then get access to the Alhambra Civic Center Library, Beaumont
Library District, Beverly Hills Public Library, Buena Park Library District,
Camarillo Public Library, Moorpark City Library, Redondo Beach Public Library,
Torrance Public Library, Whittier Public Library for example. Same goes if you
have a card from any of these same libraries.
There are some library systems where you can pay to be a member even if you
wouldn't otherwise qualify. The Brooklyn library in New York state and Orange
County in Florida come to mind. I think they charge something like $50 a year.
A cool thing about Libby up until a couple of updates ago was that when you
would search for library systems, after you'd click on a result, among the
information provided would be the number of audiobooks and eBooks in the
system's collection. Unfortunately that info no longer seems to be displayed or
at least not for me anyway.

Hello Terri,

Christopher's answer was spot on.

If you want to borrow a title that is not available, you can place it on hold
and when it becomes available, you will be notified either via email or from
within the app, or both. It's up to you. The great thing about Libby is now
you can see exactly where you are in the hold queue so you can kind of get an
idea of how much longer you will have to wait. Remember, all of the titles in
your public library system are free to borrow.

Just so you know, depending upon your library and the type of title you borrow,
you can keep a book for up to 21 days.

So, you borrow the book. All things being equal, in Libby, the book will
automatically be downloaded to your devices.  You can turn this feature off;
doing so will mean that you will be streaming an audiobook instead of having it
physically on your devices.

Once the book has been borrowed, you will see an Open button. Activate this
button and you will be taken to an interface very much similar to that of the
Audible app.

As a new public library subscriber, I think your greatest challenge will be
acquiring a library card.

With very few exceptions, your public library log-in credentials will simply be
a matter of you entering your library card number and a 4-digit pin. You only
need do this once.

Because I live in such a densely populated area, I have tons of library
branches within driving distance of my home. As a result, I have yet to apply
for a library card, online.

In short, as much as I love supporting authors by purchasing their work via
Apple Books, Kindle, and Audible, I think it equally important to support our
public library system by both donating funds, when possible, and enjoying the
library catalog as much as possible.

Subject: Question regarding Libby

Hello everyone,

I have heard of Libby before. But I haven't ever attempted to use it.

However, after reading about Mark's experience with it, I thought I would
download it, and give it a try.

I have a question though, that I hope someone can answer.

If I am able to search my library, and find audiobooks I want to read, how do I
actually listen to them?

And, if they are on hold, does this mean I can't get one, until a physical copy
is available?

I am slightly confused as to how this works. Any thoughts, or
suggestions are much appreciated.

Thank you,

Terri

Lana. I just did a phone to phone transfer from an iPhone 8 to my new
13 pro max. My audible and bookshare books from voice dream reader
transferred over to my new phone just fine, but not my bard books.

Lana,

This is the first time I have ever heard of this.
How long ago was this?

What store was it?

RE: Is there anyway to back up bard books on a phone that you’re getting rid of?

2022-08-02 Thread Richard Turner
To add to what Alan and others have said, BARD isn't like other apps, the only
way to get content onto the phone is through the app itself.
And, since now their books are on a fast server, it takes very little time to
download even lengthy audio books.
It may seem tedious and that is why they have a wish list; I don't put anything
on my phone unless I intend to read it in the near future. I have lots on my
wish list, which is connected to your account, and not on the specific phone.

Steve,

Yes, we're sure you cannot transfer downloaded BARD content from an old to a
new iDevice. Accessing previously downloaded content is the best way to refresh
memory on what might have been on the old device but the content has to be
downloaded again.

It sounds almost like automatic language switching is on; and something about
the web site is triggering that behavior.

I don't remember where the language switching setting is in Jaws.

Are you a part of the JFW users list?

I'd ask there since this is really a Windows/Jaws question.

Or, I could forward your message to that list ...

Re: Is there anyway to back up bard books on a phone that you’re getting rid of?

2022-08-02 Thread Alan Lemly
Steve,

Yes, we're sure you cannot transfer downloaded BARD content from an old to a
new iDevice. Accessing previously downloaded content is the best way to refresh
memory on what might have been on the old device but the content has to be
downloaded again.

You may find it is the last item unless you have reordered them. But for sure,
go to settings, content sources and make sure it is enabled.
