advise on updating phone.

2022-10-14 Thread Adam Morris

Hi all,
have a 13 pro currently.
Am thinking to update to a 14 pro max for better battery life.
Sales guy says if I update to a 14 pro I should get better battery life
than the 13 pro since the tests Apple run are in a controled environment.

I doubt this.
From what I gather the 14 pro plus isn't an update to the 13 pro max
since it still uses the same chip and not the updated one.

Thoughts?
TIA.

unzip apps?

2022-10-14 Thread goshawk on horseback
hello all,
am hoping someone here can help me to find the most useful unzip app please.
as there are quite a few of them, so what I am looking for, if possible, is as
follows:
fully accessible/usable with voice-over.
should be able to handle zip files with folders and subfolders, as most of what
I will be unzipping will be audio books, sets of audio books, sets of radio or
tv series, and such, (hope that makes sense).
it would be desirable if the app could handle different formats. at a guess,
most of the files will probably be the standard .zip ones, but sometimes there
may be others in other formats.
I am not a budget freak, so am not bothered if it is a paid or free one, as
long as it hopefully meets my requirements.

RE: Strange issue with my app switcher

2022-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Katrina,

First of all, it sounds to me like maybe something went not quite right with
your update because I have not heard of any issues with people being able to
power off their phone in the usual way, e.g. press volume up, press volume down
and then press and hold the side button for about a second or two until the
power off screen comes up.
You mention the "double tap to power off", "emergency call" and "cancel"
screen. Just FYI, there is no emergency call on that screen and hasn't been for
some time.
Also, you say to do a hard reset you press volume up and volume down and then
you hold volume down and the side button at the same time. I assume it is no
surprise that this won't force a hard reset because it is the wrong button
press combination. Yes, you press volume up followed by volume down, but then
all you do is press and hold the side button for maybe a 12 to 15 count
depending on how fast you count.
Also, in iOS 16 you can simply tell Siri "Reboot my phone", you will be asked
"Just to confirm, you want to restart this device", then you say "Yes" and the
phone reboots, nothing to press or do, just wait until the lockscreen comes
back up.
I have an iPhone 11 and while I am on the iOS 16.1 Beta after using the
official iOS 16 and 16.02 release for a short time, I don't recall the app
switcher issue to be present for every app, e.g. if you had 10 apps open if I
remember correctly only the last one was listed twice.
Anyways, I would highly recommend you maybe start with a simple reboot, if that
doesn't help try Settings > General > Reset and select "Reset Network Settings.
This will require you to re-enter your Wi-Fi password and name you r phone
again in Settings > General > About, but it can often have some quite
beneficial results.
If that also doesn't help make sure you have a backup and completely reset
your phone.

Subject: RE: Strange issue with my app switcher

Yes, definitely having issues with the app switcher. I was forced to update to
16.0.3 on my iPhone 8, in order to use my new airPods Pro. Many Things have
been challenging ever since. After entering the app switcher, it is necessary
to listen for "active" after the app name. If you just hear the name of the
app, keep swiping; if you have several apps open, this can be frustrating and
time consuming.

I am so upset with what's happening with the notification center. Until
speaking with Apple Accessibility, I was unable to open notifications. I could
clear notifications but not open them. I read somewhere that "list" should be
selected in the notification settings, so I did that; there was no change. I
learned about a work around, and am grateful for it, but again it is so
frustrating. I have to double tap on a notification, quickly swipe left to
where I hear open, and then quickly double tap. And, I am not kidding about
the need to move quickly. This method has been working pretty well until there
was a reminder in the notification center; notifications could only be removed
after I cleared the reminder.

I don't understand why, but I am unable to do a hard reset after the update.
After tapping the volume buttons (up and then down) and then holding in on the
down volume/side button for well over 30 seconds until my hands give out, the
screen with "double tap to power off", "emergency call" and "cancel" remains
and does not shut down/reset. I wanted to try the forced reset to try and
remedy the crazy behaviors; turns out, I don't think that would have helped as
others are experiencing the same issues.

I'm wondering if my issues are related to my using the iPhone 8? It would be
interesting to know if similar issues occur on newer phones. I'm giving
serious thought to getting a 14 Pro, but I hear things aren't all that great
for users of that model and/or IOS 16.0.3. I am nervous about the combination
of dealing with learning to function without the home button and at the same
time dealing with IOS 16 issues. As part of my research and/or decision making
process as to whether to switch to the 14 Pro, while at the Apple Store the
other day, I tried to open the app switcher and control center. I didn't get
to play around for more than 5 minutes, but never had success using the
techniques described on this list. An employee said it may be due to the
device only being a model and not a fully functioning phone. Another employee
said they have 2 visually impaired employees on staff, but both weren't in that
day. He remarked that one of those employees mentioned that there is a problem
with accessing the app center via voiceover when using IOS 16, and that perhaps
that is why I didn't have success.

I thought the app switcher thing with an app occasionally being shown twice had
already been resolved? If not then it certainly seems to be resolved in iOS
16.1 which I expect will be released either the week of October 24 or during
the first week of November, OK, so it could also be the week of November 7, but
I doubt it would be later than that.

RE: How to replace an iphone's battery.

2022-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Barbara, I understand the idea behind thinking being able to replace a battery
would be desirable. However, with these modern Lithium batteries and the
availability of external power banks there really is little or maybe I should
say no reason why this would be of interest to people. You could never have a
thin and sleek phone if you needed a battery cover and a compartment to hold an
external battery. Waterproofness would not be impossible since for example all
Garmin GPS's are IPX7 waterproof and most of them use AA batteries, but
primarily it would add much in terms of size and bulk and really for nothing.
It is actually possible to order battery replacement kits from Apple and I know
sighted people who will use the special tools which come with the kit and then
switch out their battery, but I so far have not heard of a blind person being
able to do this and considering that you can have it done for $49 at an Apple
Store I personally don't see much sense in it unless you really enjoy tinkering
and like doing this sort of thing..

Before the iphone, I used to have two nochia phones with a specially installed
screen reader on them. This made them pretty accessible. But The iphone is
much better. I wouldn't go back, I was just saying that I wished that you could
change the batteries as easily as you could with them. I never ever ever want
to go back to to texting using a phone key bad, it was just terrible, lol.

I also remember buying an extra battery for some phone I had back then and
paying $69 or $79 for just a second battery which of course was not a Lithium
battery so it would develop a memory after a year or two.
Now you go to Apple and for $49 they put in a new battery, doesn't sound very
complicated to me and if I were at 80% battery capacity and were planning to
keep my iPhone 8 for at least another year I would do it in a heartbeat.
Of course you can always go back to a non-smartphone, pretty sure you can still
get a flip phone, but then of course you can say good bye to accessible
texting, contacts, GPS navigation, reading books on your phone, doing some
quick OCR of some piece of mail lying on your desk, checking the weather, your
bank balance and I could continue for several more lines listing things I do
with my smartphone. Is an iPhone expensive? Yes, no doubt, but what about the
$2,000 Canadian I spend on the HPPDA with MobileGeo back in 2005 or 2006 which
was the first truly portable and accessible GPS. It had this funny overlay with
the buttons so the touch screen of the PDA was pressed in the right places and
one of the things I remember the most is how often I had to stop walking and
reboot the thing because it wasn't working.
Then there was the $500 for my Booksense and later when I had my first Windows
5.1 smartphone I had to buy MobileSpeak for $300 and MobileGeo for $900 to have
a screenreader and GPS. I used to buy these little HTC smartphones which had
the full keyboard with buttons and they were around $400 so add this up, $400 +
$300 for the screenreader and $900 for the GPS and you now just spend $1,600
for an accessible smartphone with GPS. I could now go to an Apple Store and buy
an iPhone SE 2022 for $579 Canadian and while this is Apple's "lowest-end"
iPhone, it is still 5 times more stable and reliable and I can do 10 times as
much with it.
It's easy to forget what we had or did not have even 15 years ago and how far
this technology has come and what Apple's move to making these devices
accessible out of the box has done for accessibility in general. It's all too
easy to complain about new bugs when a new version of iOS comes out and about
the lack of accessibility in some apps, but let's face it, we do have it pretty
good these days. Yes, I know Apple did not develop Voiceover on the Mac and all
iOS devices, watches and Apple TV's out of pure goodness and all that, but they
started the ball rolling in a direction nobody thought it could go before and
to a large degree it is because of that why Android accessibility is what it is
now, why Microsoft is putting a lot of effort into making Narrator a better
experience and why just about every large company nowadays has some sort of
accessibility department.

RE: Strange issue with my app switcher

2022-10-14 Thread Katrina Anderson

Subject: Strange issue with my app switcher

Hello, all I noticed that when I open the app switcher there seems to be two
occurrences of the app. For example, if I had just mail open, I would hear the
word mail and then if I swipe to the right, it would say mail button and then I
can flick up and close it if I do not swipe to the second Word I can’t close
it. I wonder if anyone else is having this issue? I’m not sure if I phrased it
very well, but it seems bizarre to me.

Correction to my app switcher issue

2022-10-14 Thread Barry Abbott
What I meant to say, was using the mail example what I would first here is the
word mail and then I would swipe right and I hear mail active and I have to go
there in order to close the app. I am using the iPhone 13 Pro.

Re: How to replace an iphone's battery.

2022-10-14 Thread Barbara Stahl
Before the iphone, I used to have two nochia phones with a specially installed
screen reader on them. This made them pretty accessible. But The iphone is
much better. I wouldn't go back, I was just saying that I wished that you could
change the batteries as easily as you could with them. I never ever ever want
to go back to to texting using a phone key bad, it was just terrible, lol.

Yes, doing it via the phone is also a good option.
We live in a small town and I know the pharmacist at one of our local
pharmacies so I can just call them and make an appointment and then they still
put it in the system of course so my record is updated accordingly.

Hi Fazil,

I just had a look and this is entirely stupid because as soon as you double tap
on the date of birth a date selector opens, but instead of the usual 3 boxes
where you can select the year, then the month and then the day, it comes up
with the current month and year, e.g. October 2022 and you then have a calendar
where you can tap on any day in October 2022 and it would be selected. There is
also a picker box where you can flick down and it will change from October 2022
to September 2022, then to August 2022, then to July and so on. Of course this
is ridiculous because I tried a double tap and hold then dragging the finger
down the screen to make this go faster, but it doesn't work so you literally
would have to flick down hundreds of times to get to your month and year. I
believe you are somewhere around my age, can't remember, but I was born in
April of 1967 so I would first have to flick 9 times to get from October 2022
to January 2022, then for each consequent year I would have to flick 12 times
so in order to get from January 2022 to January 1968 (54 years) I would have to
flick 648 times + the 9 flicks for this year and then I would still have to
flick 9 more times to get from January 1968 to April 1967. So, after 666 flicks
I could then find April 19 and double tap on that and you better make sure when
you try to flick really fast you don't mess up because that what happened to me
when I was somewhere around 1980 and the picker closed and when I opened it
again I was back in October 2022.
As I said, this is ridiculous and I am pretty sure I would have found a
different way if there was one so this is one for the computer for sure, when I
just tried this on my PC the birth date was a simple edit field and it says you
have to enter your birthdate in the format MMM DD, so this means you write
the first 3 letters of the month like Jan, Feb, for April it would be Apr or
for August it would be Aug, then you write the day like 02 or 27, then put a
comma, then put the 4-digit year like 1967 or 1972 or 1959.
There is also a date picker on the computer where people who work in a visual
mode can easily pick the date and I assume a sighted person can simply drag
their finger down on the picker in iOS, but it doesn't work with Voiceover.
One last comment, I went back to my iPhone because I initially tried this with
Safari assuming this is what you use. I use Edge as my default browser on the
iPhone and while Safari may have this feature and I don't know about it, in
Edge you can open a website, then tap on the "Browser" tab at the bottom and
select to "Open as desktop site". This means it will open the desktop version
of the website and not the mobile version which would be the default on an
iPhone. When I did this I was also able to enter my birth date on the iPhone in
that simple text format I described above.

RE: A problem getting into the Ap Store

2022-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
That means that either the App Store has a current and temporary issue or you
are for some reason not connected to the internet.
The first thing of course would be to reboot your iPhone, now that you use iOS
16 you can simply tell Siri "Reboot my phone" or reboot my device. Siri will
ask if you really want to do this and as soon as you say Yes your phone will
reboot. This is a nice addition over having to shut the phone down and turning
it back on.
For whatever it is worth I just opened the App Store and had no issues.

I updated my phone to 16.03 and now I can’t get in to the ap store. First it
says it’s loading, then it keeps giving me the message that it can’t connect

Does anyone know if there is something more I should be doing?

RE: Entering Data on gov.bc.ca/getvaccinated?

2022-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

And I don't miss the days when I dropped my old flip phone or whatever I had at
the time and phone, battery cover, battery and all came apart and were
skittering down the street in different directions.

2022-10-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If your battery health/capacity is really at 30% and you plan to use this phone
in any meaningful way without it being permanently plugged in you should simply
spend the $49 and get a new battery put in. Nobody can tell you whether it will
work for 1 hour, 30 minutes or 2 hours as that would depend entirely on what
you do at the time and even how good your cell signal is, if you are in an area
with really good coverage the phone will use less battery than if you are
somewhere with hardly any service where it will constantly search for towers
trying to connect.

Re: How to replace an iphone's battery.

2022-10-14 Thread Barbara Stahl
Wow, That's crazy. I definitely won't be trying to replace it myself. Why does
it have to be so complicated. It makes me a bit nostalgic for my non-smart
phones where you could just pop open the back and easily replace the battery.
Thank you all so much for the info.
Hopefully they will still have iphone 8 batteries when I'm ready to replace
mine. The battery health says its running at 80 percent which still gives me
several hours of use before it runs down. I hope to get a bit more milage out
of my phone before upgrading, because these devices are crazy expensive lol.

I have always had it done by apple. The last time it cost $49 and took
2 hours at the local store.

How to replace an iphone's battery.

2022-10-14 Thread Barbara Stahl
Hi!
So in the battery health thread, some people discussed getting a new iphone
battery. So I was wondering, how do you change an iphone's battery? Do you have
to send it away to apple, or can i somehow buy a replacement battery and
replace it myself?

RE: battery health

I know another person who replaced an 8 with an 8. I guess 8 was a popular
phone.

I wouldn't have gotten the same phone as before. The iPhone 8 phones are very
much out of date compared to the new phones. I don't know how much longer they
will be supported. I know the iPhone 8 won't be updated beyond 16.

Yes, well Carolyn, you gotta understand that I had the iPhone 8 Plus for 2 1/2
maybe three years before it started having issues like no one could hear my
audio and then no one could see my video and then VoiceOver started wigging out
on me. A lot of other things happened but luckily my dad was smart enough to
actually get warranty for my phone so I was able to get a Phone for only $350
and it’s the same model I had before and I got it last year. and also since I
was traveling a lot during 2017, 1819 and 20, I did have to use my phone a lot
because I had four modes of transportation to connect with and that was going
to and from work five days a week for approximately 10 1/2 months. A year.
also, when I was stuck in traffic during rides to and from work, I would use my
phone to pass the time by listening to music or watch some TV or catch up on
some podcasts or Messages mail, etc. Maybe even read a good book from the
national library service for the print disabled. perhaps even a game or two.

Re: Messages

2022-10-14 Thread Øyvind Lode
I'm on iOS 16.0.3 and if someone reacts to a message I've sent I get a
notification note that I've got a new message.
Their reaction is read by VoiceOver and in the messages list the
message I sent is shown and VoiceOver reads: Your iMessage text I
wrote and emojis etc and lastly Joe likes this.
This behaviour has been in there since Apple added the ability to
react to messages.
