Re: An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

2022-12-26 Thread Lelia Struve
Hi all, a question about the Alexa enabled thermostats. Do they all have a
way not to be used with either Alexa or the internet? Or for example, does
the amazon one have a Braille overlay like the microwave does? Thanks

RE: Is it safe to remove phone from list

2022-12-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Max,

Ah! I see.

In such an instance, then I would call Apple and report the device as having
been stolen. They will place it on a special list that will prevent the device
from being reactivated. Do not remove the device from your account until you
speak to Someone at Apple who will advise you on how best to proceed.

I am sorry that her phone was stolen; What a terrible thing to happen.

Should you decide to contact Apple and report the phone as having been stolen,
please let us know your experience with Apple on this so that others who may
have a similar incident will no how best to proceed.

Hi Mark,

I have a Honeywell thermostat, which I access via Alexa to perform basic
functions. Yes, I had to register with Honeywell and/or Total Connect Comfort
(TCC), but I don't recall the process being difficult. I've had this
thermostat for several years, and only recently discovered it could be accessed
via Alexa. The process of connecting Alexa to the device was easy as I recall.

The thermostat can be accessed via the TCC app, which is very accessible via
voiceover. When I first got the thermostat years ago, before I found out about
the app, JAWS had trouble accessing all features (e.g. programming the device),
so I relied on sighted help. However, JAWS had no problem at all with the
website when I tried a year or so ago. Rarely go to the website though as the
TCC app is great for programming, etc. And, again Alexa does a great job with
the basics like ID of indoor temperature, changing the temperature, etc.

Okay, I know that I have asked this question before but, now that I must buy a
new thermostat for my home, within the next week or so, as my 32 year old model

thermostat do you either recommend and / or are currently using?

I am aware of the Nest brand models; I thought they were Google-only models but
I think they also can work with Alexa, right? Does anyone have any experience
with Nest / Alexa compatibility?

Also, I know that Honeywell makes Alexa models but, from what I have read on

Hello Everyone,

Okay, I know that I have asked this question before but, now that I must buy a
new thermostat for my home, within the next week or so, as my 32 year old model
is starting to fail on a virtually daily basis, what Alexa compatible
thermostat do you either recommend and / or are currently using?

I am aware of the Nest brand models; I thought they were Google-only models but
I think they also can work with Alexa, right? Does anyone have any experience
with Nest / Alexa compatibility?

Also, I know that Honeywell makes Alexa models but, from what I have read on
the web, today, one must setup an online account with Honeywell before the
device can be used with Alexa. That sounds like a lot of trouble to me; maybe.

The only thing I know for certain is that I want a model that will work with
Amazon Alexa, out of the box, because I do not want to use a third-party app,
is I can avoid doing so.

I have come to trust the Alexa app for iOS and iPad OS.

able to use it, or at least the logic board from it (locked phones are

RE: Is it safe to remove phone from list

2022-12-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello,

To be honest, I do not know why you would want to remove your wife's phone from
your account unless, of course, you want to add it to her account.

If you remove her phone from your iCloud account, the phone will still have the
6-digit unlock code on the device, itself.

What the message is indicating is that, if not attached to your iCloud account,
then if someone knows the 6-digit unlock code, then they could add it to their
iCloud account; which would be the natural scenario were the phone sold or
stolen.

So, ideally, you will want to remove the phone from your iCloud account and
then register it with another iCloud account as soon as possible.

As for the difference between telephone keypads and calculator keypads? That,
my friend, is a long story and has more to do with the history of technology
than anything else.

There are a lot of weird things in life: for example why do we refer to
insurance that is for use when one dies as life insurance? Rather than death
insurance? (smile). I do not want to get off-topic but could not resist (big
smile).

Hello Mark,

Glad to read you’re getting along so well with your new iPhone.

I suppose one could temporarily turn off speech and rely on VoiceOver’s clicks
as guidance. What I do is to swipe around a bit rather than landing on the
digits directly so the casual listener does not necessarily know which digits
were entered.

I think a privacy option could be applied to any input field designated as a
secure one too for passwords and the like.

One thing that has intrigued me over the years is why on a telephone keypad 1,
2, and three are above 4, 5, and six whereas on a calculator and tills they are
below?

Thanks to all list members for your contributions this year and to our Mark for
moderating the group. A little early but all the best to you all for 2023.

An Alexa Compatible Thermostat, Anyone?

2022-12-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

Okay, I know that I have asked this question before but, now that I must buy
a new thermostat for my home, within the next week or so, as my 32 year old
model is starting to fail on a virtually daily basis, what Alexa compatible
thermostat do you either recommend and / or are currently using?

I am aware of the Nest brand models; I thought they were Google-only models
but I think they also can work with Alexa, right? Does anyone have any
experience with Nest / Alexa compatibility?

Also, I know that Honeywell makes Alexa models but, from what I have read on
the web, today, one must setup an online account with Honeywell before the
device can be used with Alexa.  That sounds like a lot of trouble to me;
maybe.

The only thing I know for certain is that I want a model that will work with
Amazon Alexa, out of the box, because I do not want to use a third-party
app, is I can avoid doing so.

I have come to trust the Alexa app for iOS and iPad OS.

iOS / iPad OS Unlock Privacy for Low Vision VoiceOver Users

2022-12-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello All,

One thing that I have come to enjoy about all of my Android devices is that,
if Talk Back is enabled at startup, when entering the device unlock code,
one can have Talk Back say "dot" instead of saying the actual number or
letter being entered on the device. This is extremely convenient and
private for low vision users who need a screen reader but have enough
residual vision to be able to enter a passcode when in the company of others
without having others hear the actual passcode.

Is there such a feature for iOS and/or iPad OS?

Again, just so you understand, on my beloved Samsung Galaxy S10, when
starting up the device, if I have headphones attached, when entering the
passcode, Talkback will announce the character being entered. However, I
have it set so that if headphones are not connected, then Talkback merely
says "dot" for each character being entered.

With Face ID, given that one may be required to enter the unlock code more
than one time after device startup, it would be nice to have such a privacy
feature for VoiceOver.

All replies appreciated.

Mark

RE: The New Apple TV

2022-12-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Patti,

I have not done any research on the latest model of the Apple TV but I suspect
that the difference in the size of the port, located on the bottom of the Siri
remote is because it is a USBC port and not a Lightening port.

Apple, slowly but surely is switching from Lightening to USBC because USBC is
more compatible on a global stage.

You will have to purchase a new cable in order to charge your new Siri remote.

While I applaud Apple's adoption of a more universal standard, given my,
already sizable investment in the Apple Orchard, switching from Lightening to
USBC will be a bit costly.

Fortunately for me, as I use an Android phone, I already own a few USBC
adaptors and cables.

As for how Apple packages the Apple TV? You are not missing anything. That is
just the way it is.

2022-12-26 Thread Michael Irons
Hello everyone I got the iPhone SE 20 because I was not willing to mess around
with Face ID and possibly having to wear a mask. I didn’t think I would be able
to set up Face ID where it would work. I was born blind from birth and
literally have not seen a thing in my life. I have lots of difficulty
understanding what things really look like. I would say if no one leave me they
might as well come and beat me up.

Hello Everyone,

I think it is fair to say that no one was a bigger critic of Face ID than I.

However, I must admit that using Face ID on iPhone 14 has been much, much
better than my experience than on iPhone 11.

I cannot articulate how or why this is so but there is definitely a difference
in how the systems feels between the two devices.

The funny thing is, two nights ago, when I went back to my beloved 8 Plus for a
few minutes to check on an app, I found myself wanting to use Face ID gestures
more than my beloved Touch ID. It took me more than a few minutes to figure
out why some of the gestures were not working on my beloved 8 Plus. When I
realized that Touch ID was the method of choice on the old phone I couldn't
stop laughing at how readily the brain can adapt to new techniques.

To those using Touch ID, I say keep doing so for as long as you can.
However I will add that on iPhone 14, at least, Face ID is not bad, not bad at
all. (smile).

Mark

It gets VoiceOver focus as soon as you enter the App Library. You should just
be able to double tap and start typing the name of the app you want to search
for as soon as you get into the App Library with that last three finger swipe
right. I reported an issue to Apple recently, but you can't get there with a
two finger flick up or by a four finger tap at the top of the screen. Can you
get there by exploring the top of the screen?

There are several ways to do this, but what I do is to go to the App Library.
You can get there by performing a three finger right from the last home page.
Now you can flick around all of your installed apps until you find the app
you're looking for. You can also perform a three finger up to sort your apps
alphabetically or use the search field at the top of the screen.

RE: LOCATING AN APP ON THE IPHHONE SE

2022-12-26 Thread Christopher Chaltain
There are several ways to do this, but what I do is to go to the App Library.
You can get there by performing a three finger right from the last home page.
Now you can flick around all of your installed apps until you find the app
you're looking for. You can also perform a three finger up to sort your apps
alphabetically or use the search field at the top of the screen.

GPS App With Specific Details

2022-12-26 Thread Kelly Ford
Hi,

I use a range of GPS apps and web sites but have not found one that has some
details I’d like to have at times. I am curious if anyone has found such.

For example, in planning a route, I’d like to schedule stops based on time
travelled so if I’m going to be on a 20 hour drive I can say I want to stop
every 8 hours and have the route planned based on those stops.

Most of these apps also give you the turns and connections you are going to
make. Sometimes they’ll tell you when you are crossing into another state. I’d
like an option that would list some for of the cities I’m passing along the way.

Today I tend to get most of these details, especially from the second category,
by using an app called Exit. It lists the different exits along an interstate,
what’s at the exit and typically gives you an idea of the city.

Kelly

How to delete an ap from my IPHONE

2022-12-26 Thread Marilyn and Don Bilderback
Go to any Home Screen, touch an app, flick up or down to edit Mode, and
double-tap. Now find the app you want to move. Flick down to the Drag option
and double-tap. Touch an app or folder that you want to be to its left or
right. Then flick down until you get to the Drop option you want, and
double-tap.

Edit mode will close a few seconds later, or you can do the Home gesture or
press the Home button to exit.
