Apple accessibility reply regarding haptic time on Apple Watch

2023-12-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
A few days ago the discussion about haptic time on the Apple Watch came up
again and a few people posted they could not get it towrk at all whereas others
had no issues and yet again others seemed to get mixed results.

On my new Apple Watch Ultra 2 I can use haptic time with very good consistency,
however, there is one oddity which sounds like it is a bug. First of all, here
is what Apple Accessibility said in their reply to the email I sent them in
which I asked for clarification as to which gesture exactly should work and
what result to expect and whether there were any exceptions:

Hello Sieghard,
Expected behavior with Taptic Time while VoiceOver is enabled is to use a
one-finger double tap to feel hours and minutes, or a one-finger triple tap for
just the minutes. This is with the screen locked.
If the watch is awake, place your palm over the watch face to put it to sleep
or if Wake on Wrist Raise is turned on, turn your wrist downwards and then
perform the one-finger double tap. We tested this with a Sleep Focus enabled
and managed to get the same results.
If you are receiving different results when trying these above steps, we
recommend partnering with a member of our AppleCare Accessibility Support team
to further troubleshoot. If they are unable to resolve the concern through
troubleshooting, then they can escalate their findings to the appropriate teams
for further investigation.
You will find the contact information for the team in the following support
article: https://support.apple.com/HT209585

The reason why they mentioned sleep focus is because for me a 1 finger double
tap does absolutely nothing when my automatic sleep focus is on. It is set to
start at 10:30 PM and end at 7 AM and by now I have tested and reproduced this
at least 10 times. If I double tap the screen at 10:28 PM or 7:01 AM all is
well and haptic time vibrates the hours and minutes. If I do so at 10:31 PM or
a minute or two before 7 AM the doubl e tap does nothing, but a triple tap with
1 finger gives me hours and minutes consistently. In the sam eway a quadruple
tap during the time when sleep focus is on gives me just the minutes in haptic
time, of course when sleep focus is not on I already get just minutes after a
triple tap.

I plan to reach out to the support resources they mention in the arcticle in
the new year because unless some other setting causes this, it should
definitely be something they take a closer look at.

I would be very curious to know if others have to use a triple and quadruple
tap and if so, whether this is also in certain scenarious or whether it is
always so. Please make sure to also mention the watch model you have since I
assume this could also have something to do with it.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Another great new Be My Eyes feature "Be My Eyes Groups"

2023-12-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
This is what I received a couple of days ago from Be My Eyes:

Be My Eyes is pleased to announce a major new feature called Be My Eyes Groups!
For years we've heard from our community that not every person is comfortable
asking for help from an unknown volunteer, no matter how kind. That's why,
starting today, Be My Eyes is offering a major new capability to give blind
people more choices.
In addition to our existing 7.1 million volunteers, now blind people worldwide
can also build their own custom network of people to help with everyday tasks.
Build your own trusted group of friends or family to help with more personal
and sensitive tasks you might not wish to share with an unknown volunteer -
it's your choice.
Maybe you need a friend or family member to confirm a medication. Or maybe you
would feel more comfortable with a friend reviewing your paper mail. Surely
among 20 friends and family members someone would be happy to help you out at
the moment you need it. Now Be My eyes technology makes that easy. Once you've
assembled your trusted group, just press the "My groups" button to connect with
the first available person who is known to you.
To create a new group, click on "My groups" in the Be My Eyes App homepage and
follow the instructions on the screen. After you have created and named your
first group, you will be able to send an invite link to your friends and family
members. You will find the link at the end of the group creation process. Once
you've assembled your trusted circle, just press the Be My Eyes Groups button
to connect with the first available person who is known to you. You can enter
up to 20 people in your circle and have up to 5 different groups on Be My Eyes.
When you've set it up, your group will always be there to help, in any language
you and your friends speak. And just like the other Be My Eyes features such as
standard volunteers, Specialized Help and now Be My AI, our new Be My Eyes
Groups feature is free of charge for non commercial use.
We'll roll out Be My Eyes Groups worldwide beginning December 20th as an open
beta test to ensure it's working well for our worldwide user group. To access
this new feature, just open the current Be My Eyes app and click on the button
marked "My groups" to start creating your individual trusted group.
We welcome user feedback about the feature. Write to us at
i...@bemyeyes.com so we can continue to improve this
service.

Minding my own business on the iPhone doing something I don't remember but
probably in messages, the phone suddenly said "keyboard hidden". and the
keyboard was gone. I could dictate, but could not correct. No keyboard. I
retrieved the stinker by connecting my logitech k480 and pressing f3.

What makes the keyboard disappear? How, without attaching the K480, can I
retrieve it?

thanks much,

RE: Comparison between Envision AI and Be My Eyes AI descriptions

2023-12-23 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
As others mentioned, this is just the initial setup screen. Be My Eyes has two
kinds of users: those who need assistance and those who provide it. If you are
blind and want to use it for assistance you tap on "I need assistance", then
create an account and you are good to go. You won't ever have to do this again.

Hello Richard and Everyone,

I was going to start a new thread but decided to ask my questions here:

After hearing so many wonderful comments regarding Be My Eyes, along with the
description you just posted about how the app can describe something without
human intervention, I decided to download it and give it a try.

Did I miss something? When I launch the app, I only see, no pun intended, 2
options (1), I need visual assistance, call company or volunteer and (2), I’d
like to volunteer, share your sight.

I was hoping to use the app’s AI image description, only, at this point.

How does one activate that feature?

The app store indicates that there are in-app purchases but, even after
exploring the website, I cannot determine what the various fees are for and how
they work. For example, in the app store there seems to be a purchase for
$19.95. What does this particular fee cover?

All replies greatly appreciated.

I just updated Envision AI and it mentioned something about improved
descriptions.
I took a picture and it said, "I'm not sure but it could be a room with a tv on
a table."
I did the same scene with Be My Eyes AI and got the following.

The picture shows a living room with a cozy and homely atmosphere. On the left,
there is a wooden rocking chair with a black jacket draped over it. In the
center, a flat-screen TV is placed on a wooden stand, and beneath the stand,
there appears to be a cable box or DVD player. To the right of the TV, there's
a lamp with a classic design on a small table. Behind the TV, a window with
white curtains allows natural light to enter the room. On the right side of the
image, a decorated Christmas tree is partially visible, suggesting the photo
was taken during the holiday season. The walls are painted in a light color,
and there is a large, framed artwork of a Christmas tree above the rocking
chair. The floor is wooden, and in the foreground, a corner of a quilt with a
patchwork design can be seen, indicating the viewer might be sitting on a couch
or bed covered with this quilt.

Image description provided with Be My Eyes.

2023-12-23 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
I completely agree with you Richard, I only mentioned SuperSense’s description
out of interest rather than a recommendation.

I may say the same of Tap Tap See and One Step Reader!

There are many apps on my iPhone that no longer deserve being there.

My comparison was based on one image alone with my iPhone placed on a stand
controlled with a Bluetooth keyboard. Had I taken photographs of other
subjects under different lighting conditions my results may have been totally
different.

How to turn on iPhone Stolen Device Protection; and should you? 9 to 5 Mac

2023-12-23 Thread VIPhone

How to turn on iPhone Stolen Device Protection; and should you?
9to5Mac: Saturday, December 23, 2023

An important new security feature for iPhone has arrived to test with the
iOS 17.3 beta that gives you protection in the event your device is stolen.
Join along for a look at how to turn on iPhone Stolen Device Protection and
also some advice on whether or not you should use the feature.

With the first iOS 17.3 beta, Apple launched the ability to test out iPhone
Stolen Device Protection. The feature comes after WSJ’s Joanna Stern
investigated a rise in iPhone thefts in public places like bars. The
approach typically saw attackers observing victims entering their passcodes
before stealing their iPhones and then using that to immediately change
their Apple ID password and lock the owners out of their accounts and even
iCloud backups.

Notably, Joanna even interviewed an iPhone thief who was able to take more
than $300,000 from victims using this attack.

Fortunately, iPhone Stolen Device Protection solves the problem by
requiring biometric authentication when away from trusted places like home
and work. It also includes a time delay for a second biometric
authentication for certain sensitive actions.
Check out more details on how exactly it works in our full coverage:
Should you turn on iPhone Stolen Device Protection?
Short answer, yes. Here’s more context…
• The brilliant thing about Stolen Device Protection is that there’s very
little downside to the user experience while providing a great boost to
security.
• After turning the feature on, if you end up in an unlikely situation
where Face ID or Touch ID isn’t working:
o You can keep using your device for texts, calls, and most functions – you
just won’t be able to do sensitive actions like changing Apple ID password,
changing the passcode or Face ID/Touch ID, seeing saved passwords, etc.
o You can turn Stolen Device Protection off with your passcode when back at
a familiar location like home before you get your iPhone repaired

How to turn on iPhone Stolen Device Protection
1. Make sure you’re running the iOS 17.3 beta on your iPhone (beta
installation guide)
2. Open the Settings app
3. Swipe down and tap Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode)
4. Now under Stolen Device Protection tap Turn On Protection
That’s it!

As mentioned above, if you need to turn it off after the rare event of
breaking or damaging your Face ID TrueDepth camera or Touch ID sensor, you
can use your passcode to do that when at a trusted location.

Comparison between Envision AI and Be My Eyes AI descriptions

2023-12-23 Thread Richard Turner

Hi,

I typically charge my iPhones, battery packs, and such with a single cable
plugged into a block plugged into the extension cord or directly into the
outlet. What I’d ideally like is a sort of USB extension cord where I can
plug one end into a hard to reach outlet, then have a hub of USB ports where I
can plug in several devices, rather than managing a number of those bulky
blocks and an extension cord. Does this kind of thing exist and what would it
be called for an Amazon or Walmart search? Any considerations to keep in mind
as I’m selecting one? I feared that if I searched for “USB hub”, I’d end up
with the kind that is used to plug a bunch of peripherals into a computer and I
don’t think that is the right thing. I need the hub to plug into AC power to
charge my devices.
