Hi again,

Apologies, but after listening to Jonathan's take on this, it seems like
support is advising users that this week's update was only a warning, and
that the update which removes functionality won't be released until May. In
that case, I apologize for the misinformation and it may be better to wait
and see what happens and whether folks are able to hold off on that update.

Please submit feedback to Apple about Voice Dream Reader

Hey guys,

If you search for Voice Dream Reader on the App Store, open the page for
the app, and scroll down, there is an option to "report a problem". Please
consider reporting what the developer is doing to Apple. I am not sure if
it violates any developer guidelines, but it sure seems like it would:
selling lifetime licenses with agreed upon terms and then disabling them.
The nature of how the update was released also didn't give users any
warning or opt-out, as the new deadline wasn't mentioned in the release
notes. I think Apple uses these for internal purposes, and if enough people
file reports then they may act upon it.

I would also recommend leaving a review of the app and mentioning the
upcoming disabling of previously purchased licenses, and how the update was
handled.

I absolutely do not have a problem with developers going the subscription
route, charging for new features and updates, or raising prices. It's a
tough world out there. But I do have serious concerns about pushing out an
update that disables previously purchased licenses from continuing to work
at all and not mentioning that this would happen in the release notes. I
would imagine this will impact many schools and other educational
institutions as well who will rely on having access to this app at least
for the remainder of the school year.
Let's hope we can share with the developer and Apple some constructive
feedback.

Voice Dream Scanner, VDScan, is still owned by Winston Chen.

So, it is not a part of this discussion about Voice Dream Reader.

However, if you are talking about the scanner built into Voice Dream Reader, 
you need to ask supp...@voicedream.com  

But the stand-alone app is still owned by Winston under his new company named

I agree with you completely Dennis. This is why I feel the way I do about the subscription. This company does not engage with us as a community at all and all they want is money. It appears to me that what ever the rights, wrongs and merits of the new 
pricing structure are the choice is simple, subscribe or don’t.

I doubt very much that the  creators of the app in question monitor this list 
so all we are doing is arguing amongst ourselves.

It is well worth noting that software is often licensed and not sold.  I have 
an Apple Music subscription and as long as that is active I can play any music 
in their catalogue.  They may increase the price of the subscription at any 
time.  If I choose to terminate my subscription I am no longer able to play 
their music even if it has been downloaded to my device.

Apps have changed to a subscription model before or added in app purchases so 
this is nothing new or unscrupulous.

Pay your money and make your choice.  No one is holding you to ransom.

I’ll restate Had it been  Winston I wouldn’t have an issue.  Why not?  Winston 
was honest transparent and engaged with the community.  The Applause Group  
does not engage with the community at all.

The Applause Group bought Voice Dream LLC in April of 2023.  Applause Group 
never said you would never have to pay.  They said you didn’t have to pay right 
away.
Jonathan’s take is pretty clear, this is a good business decision.  
But, you are spreading false information.
Boycott it if you want and use something else, but do not give wrong 
information.
 
Could they have handled it differently, probably so.
 
And as I have said, more than once, Winston was going to have to do the exact 
same thing.

So lets say they at least did a poor job of explaining what was to come.  My 
issue is should we trust them that we will pay the $60 a year?  Are we really 
locked into that price as their blog post states?  Or if it goes up to $150 
next year is it 25% off that $150?  This is what happens when you promise the 
community one thing and do another.  Had they said “we are not changing things 
for current users at this time but that may change down the road they would be 
protected and I would not have any leg to stand on.  It was how they did this.  
Not everyone got emails.  I know I didn’t.

You need to get your facts straight.

The Applause Group bought Voice Dream LLC in April of 2023.  Applause Group 
never said you would never have to pay.  They said you didn’t have to pay right 
away.

Jonathan’s take is pretty clear, this is a good business decision.  

But, you are spreading false information.

Boycott it if you want and use something else, but do not give wrong 
information.

 

Could they have handled it differently, probably so.

 

And as I have said, more than once, Winston was going to have to do the exact 
same thing.

I think speechify has a lot of potential, but they need to make the interface 
simple in the wave voice stream reader is. They also really need to add 
alternative voices, the problem with many of these services is they mainly use 
the iOS voices that are already built in and that gets really old after a 
while. It’s good to have the high-quality voices available. I do sometimes use 
a service, called Capti, but to get access to things like books share I believe 
you have to have a premium subscription.
