do they have a outlook app only or is it just word excel and the like?

I'm not a fan of editing Office documents on my phone and prefer to
use my computer for this but I know several who are interested in
doing so. I will say that I opened both Excel and Word files using
these new separate apps and was very impressed with their

I'm sure others will weigh in with comments on these Office apps as
they put them through their paces.

Re: drop box

2014-10-22 Thread Anna Byrne

Hi, Joseph,

Thanks for the reply. when you say try loading, do you just mean
double tapping on a file in the list that dropbox displays? the
.docx file is almost readable when the action item says thumbnail,
but not when it says full. go figure! If I touch the screen it
reads a line, but I can't reliably get to the next line. If I just
touch the screen it might or might not read a line, and that one
might or might not be the next line in the document.

Yesterday it gave me an 'open in' choice, but the only choice was
Prizmo, and the text was totally garbled. I don't mind purchasing
Voice Dream Reader if that's what it takes, but if I could offer my
student a free way to access her files that would be better.

At 08:22 PM 10/22/2014, you wrote:

Hi Anna,

I just took a look, and this Dropbox feature works just as you've described
it. Try loading a txt, rtf, doc, and other such text related files and
reading each of them using the "thumb nail full" setting--it will not show
when turned on--it is a toggle. If the file shows, simply read the screen
line by line until you reach the text portion of the file, and you can now
navigate normally using left and right swipes or swiping down line by line
via rotor Line setting.

Try placing your text file on the same level as your folders within main
Dropbox folder on your computer.

Re: Braille input mode

2014-10-01 Thread Anna Byrne
this is from Jonathan Mozen's book "iOS 8 without the eye" available
for $20 from National Braille press. It's awesome:

New Braille Commands

A number of functions for which there has previously been no Braille
command have now been assigned one.

Pressing F-cord will perform a search of the screen. This is
equivalent to using VO+F on a Bluetooth keyboard, and is particularly
useful when searching for a string of text on a web page or within a document.

Pressing q-chord toggles QuickNav on and off. This feature is
particularly handy on web pages, since single-letter commands can be
used to move to specific items on a web page.

With the clear division of Braille functions into input and output
categories, there have been some changes to a couple of commands.
Previously, G-chord would toggle between contracted and uncontracted
Braille, and the setting would affect input and output. G-chord now
only changes Braille output. The three available options through
which you can cycle are "6-dot", "8-dot", and "Contracted.

If you'd like to toggle Braille input, that's the domain of dots
2-3-6-chord, which previously toggled between 6 and 8-dot Braille.
Just as with output, the available choices are "6-dot", "8-dot", and
"Contracted.

At 08:20 AM 10/1/2014, you wrote:
No, the three-finger swipe to the right doesn't give eight-dot
input, at least not on my 5S or 6+. And it isn't an option in the
braille settings.

 Hi all,

I am now performing all of my writing using braille input mode
on my iPhone, and absolutely love this input mode.

Someone reported that the iPhone 6+ has 8 dot mode for braille
input. I looked at a 6+ yesterday in the Apple store. I could not
find any 8 dot input mode for the demo 6+. Can you please tell me
how to put the iPhone 6+ into 8 dot braille input mode?

With some camera apps not working, is it likely that KNFB reader will work?

2014-09-29 Thread Anna Byrne
With iOS 8.2 neither Money Reader nor Light Detector is working,
although Tap Tap See, which also uses the camera, works fine. I want
to get the KNFB reader, but if the stinker isn't going to work till
iOS 8 is fixed, I would be smarter to buy a new vacuum cleaner. Is
anyone using KNFB reader successfully with iOS 8 while unable to use
other camera apps???

RE: Light detector doesn't work for me either

2014-09-28 Thread Anna Byrne
I tried the steps you suggested, turning off camera, deleting the
app, shutting down the phone for about a minute, and
reinstalling. Neither Light Detector nor Money reader will open
after reinstallation. They are in app switcher, but do not say
'running'. I also removed Omoby, only to discover that it is no
longer available.

Both Light Detector and Money Reader are allowed to access the
camera. Also Omoby, which doesn't work either. But the flash
doesn't activate, no matter whether it is set to auto or on.

Both Money Reader and Light Detector work, maybe it's just that they are not

Money Reader

2014-09-24 Thread Anna Byrne
In iOS 8, Looktel Money Reader does not turn on the camera light in
order to see a bill. VoiceOver says "Money reader running," but
nothing happens after that. it asked permission to access the
camera, and I gave it. Settings says it is using the back facing
camera, which is what I expected. But no identification is
happening. Is there a setting somewhere I am missing? I deleted and
reinstalled it, shut down the phone and shut it up again, ... no joy.

thanks for any help.

Speak messages on locked screen?

2014-09-24 Thread Anna Byrne
I O S 8. I hear a notification tone when I get a message with my
screen locked, but the message is not spoken as it was in IOS 7. In
Accessibility there is an item that says 'speak messages always'; but
it doesn't speak when the screen is locked. Is this true for
everyone, or am I just special???
