Re: bug RE: Incoming notifications destroy the reading of a current article

2024-04-28 Thread Earle
I'm sorry. I guess I was wrong. I thought it may have been a verbosity setting,
but obviously not. If everything is set the same on both phones and they
exhibit different behaviour, then something is wrong for sure. I'm using an
iPhone 12 Pro and have no problems reading articles or anything else for that
matter. When I get a notification, I get a haptic but whatever I'm reading
continues to read. I hope they figure this out soon. It must be one of those
bugs that only affects some phones. Hopefully Apple can quickly track this one
down.

This is not an iOS bug. I'm running iOS 17.4.1 and I am not experiencing this.
Check your notification verbosity settings under VoiceOver settings.

Re: Rotor action default in iOS 17.3 beta

2024-01-02 Thread Earle
This is a new setting. I can't remember exactly when it was introduced. It allows you to keep your rotor on the setting you leave it at, instead of allowing iOS to decide when it should change. There are some situations when I find this setting quite useful. I like to use it if I'm reading a long email that has a lot of headings in it. This way I can change the setting to ensure that it stays on headings even if I flick through the email.EarleSent from my iPhoneOn Jan 2, 2024, at 9:31 PM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

This is likely the same in iOS 17.2... but has anyone else been bothered by the fact that the rotor, especially in the mail app, instead of defaulting to Actions, it defaults to headings? I find each time I open the mail app, and land
on a message or thread, I have to change the rotor to actions in order to flick up to delete the message or thread.

When Apple Watch is in Silent Mode, tap and hold 2 fingers on the watch face to feel a haptic version of the time.

When VoiceOver is on, double-tap to feel hours and minutes. Triple-tap to feel minutes only. below is the hint in the Watch app on the phone for haptic time, I assume the first part is referring to when voiceover is off.

It does not work consistently for me.

I have S E version of the watch.  It seems like the first time I do a triple tap, it doesn’t work.  If I try it again, it usually works.

If voice over is turned off, it does not work.

A few days ago the discussion about haptic time on the Apple Watch came up again and a few people posted they could not get it towrk at all whereas others had no issues and yet again others seemed to get mixed results.

On my new Apple Watch Ultra 2 I can use haptic time with very good consistency, however, there is one oddity which sounds like it is a bug. First of all, here is what Apple Accessibility said in their reply to the email I sent them in which
I asked for clarification as to which gesture exactly should work and what result to expect and whether there were any exceptions:

Hello Sieghard,
Expected behavior with Taptic Time while VoiceOver is enabled is to use a one-finger double tap to feel hours and minutes, or a one-finger triple tap for just the minutes. This is with the screen locked.
If the watch is awake, place your palm over the watch face to put it to sleep or if Wake on Wrist Raise is turned on, turn your wrist downwards and then perform the one-finger double tap. We tested this with a Sleep Focus enabled and managed to get the same
 results.
If you are receiving different results when trying these above steps, we recommend partnering with a member of our AppleCare Accessibility Support team to further troubleshoot. If they are unable to resolve the concern through troubleshooting, then they can
escalate their findings to the appropriate teams for further investigation.
You will find the contact information for the team in the following support article:https://support.apple.com/HT209585

The reason why they mentioned sleep focus is because for me a 1 finger double tap does absolutely nothing when my automatic sleep focus is on. It is set to start at 10:30 PM and end at 7 AM and by now I have tested and reproduced this at
least 10 times. If I double tap the screen at 10:28 PM or 7:01 AM all is well and haptic time vibrates the hours and minutes. If I do so at 10:31 PM or a minute or two

Re: Haptic time

2023-12-14 Thread Earle
A 1-finger double-tap almost always gives me the haptic time. I have an Apple
watch ultra and I'm running the latest version of Watch OS.

Re: Resetting VoiceOver back to default iPhone iOS 17.0.2

2023-09-29 Thread Earle
If I'm understanding you correctly you have changed the label of an icon and
you want to change it back to the original. If this is what you want to do it
is easily accomplished. Locate the icon you want to change on your home screen.
Do a 2-finger double-tap and hold to go into the VoiceOver labeling feature.
Then just delete the text in the edit box and hit done. This will return the
label to its original state. I have had to do this and it works perfectly.

Re: New iPad owner with questions

2023-03-23 Thread Earle
The VoiceOver settings on your iPhone and iPad are completely separate. You can change them on one device and they won't change on the other. The only settings I can think of off the top of my head that will sync, are: activities, and custom punctuation groups. This is because they are saved in iCloud. The actual activity settings and punctuation settings are separate. Just the groups and activities are synced. The bottom line is, you can change settings on each device separately.EarleSent from my iPhoneOn Mar 23, 2023, at 11:17 AM, Wayne Merritt wrote:Anna, That's good to know, but there are a few other options I would like one way on the iPad but another on the iPhone. I can also see myself using vertical navigation on the iPad, but that's not a feature I would regularly use on the iPhone. There are other options I have come across that I want different between the 2 devices. Another question is can I have my Magic Keyboard paired to multiple devices? I would only use 1 at a time, but wondered if I could have it paired to the phone and the iPad. Warm regards, Wayne MerrittJAWS Certified, 2023http://freedomscientific.com/certificationCheck out my GoodReads page:http://goodreads.com/waynesbooksOn Mar 23, 2023, at 8:51 AM, Anna Dresner wrote:Hello Wayne,Locking the orientation isn’t a VoiceOver feature, so you can absolutely have it set differently on the two devices. While this is good on paper, is it possible to make settings changes on the iPad that are different from the settings I have on my iPhone? An example is the screen orientation. Re: stop iOS from capitalizing first letter when dictating

2022-04-23 Thread Earle
I normally don't dictate email addresses. When I have done it I just say at
sign. I just don't say at. If you remember to say at sign it will actually put
the at sign in the email address.

Re: Using files as ring tones without iTunes

2022-03-30 Thread Earle
Hi Jasmine. If you want to email me off list we can work something out. The
best email address to use is:
rowdyameri...@gmail.com
Then we can talk and exchange info if you like. Maybe I could
record you a demo. It might help you if you can actually hear how it is done.

I am totally blind as well and I have no problems doing what I said in my

The only way I know of to accomplish what you want is to import the M4R file
into GarageBand on your iPhone. Then you can share it as a ringtone and it will
show up in your ringers and alerts. That is the only way I have been able to
put M for our files into my ringtones and alerts.

Yes, it was originally part of the compass app. As of iOS 12 it has been moved

An Overcast Question

2018-11-24 Thread Earle

I recently became an Overcast user. For the most part I am happy with it.

I do have a question. How can I see how many un-played episodes a
podcast has? When I am on the main screen of Overcast I see all of my
podcasts. I don't see any way of seeing how many un-played episodes they
have, or how many new episodes there are. When I used Downcast this
information was readily available. I see an all episodes play list. I'm
assuming this is a built-in default play list. Any help would be
appreciated.

Re: Scheduling to record with Tune In

2018-04-30 Thread Earle
I am able to schedule recordings with no problems at all. You need to be using
the pro version. After you have the alarm set, and the recording enabled, you
have to double-tap options and choose clock display. Your device also needs to
be unlocked and plugged in, for it to work. So if you have auto-lock turned on,
you need to disable it in settings.
Hope this helps.

double tap again on the Confirm Clear Section for the same notification of
course and it should work. What I mean is that if you double tap Confirm
Clear Section for Messages and then you double tap a second time but you are
actually tapping on Confirm Clear Section for Mail then of course it won't
 work.

For me at least a fast one-finger triple tap also works 100%, but double
tapping and double tapping again also works. Maybe others can try this and
post feedback to see if it seems to work for everybody or not.

Yes, that is exactly how it works. The only problem I have found is, you can't

I use an app called Flip. It is very accessible and has a wide range of

Re: Frustrated with iPad mini and have a few questions

2014-05-26 Thread Earle
Hi Jen.

I will try and answer the questions I can.

The iPad doesn't have calculator, voice memos, or the flashlight. You can
download apps from the app store to fill in those gaps though.

The iPad let's you use the side switch for muting or for locking and unlocking
orientation. You can change the behaviour of the switch under settings and
general. The iPad also doesn't have the vibrate option. As far as I know,
that is only available on the iPhones.

I'm not sure how to see most recent in the Facebook feeds, since I am having
this problem myself. I can do it on the phone, but I'm having problems getting
it to work on my iPad. I'm not sure about the chat thing either. When I want
to use Facebook chat, I just hit the messages button and send messages that
way. Sorry I couldn't help any further than that.

Re: Frustrated with iPad mini and have a few questions

I use the side switch on my iPad mini as a mute switch. Like Sieghard said, if
you want to lock orientation you can do that from the control center.

As Earl said, there is no vibrate mode on an iPad just as there is none on
 an iPod Touch.
I don't have an iPad handy right now, but I assume you may still have
Orientation Lock in the Control Centre, just something you have to check.

Vo Calc was mentioned yesterday in your thread. Apparently it is made by the
 same developer who does MBraille.

There are a ton of Flashlight apps, I am sure many of them are free so you
probably just have to search the app store for Flashlight and try out a
 few.

As for a replacement for Voice Memos, just search the list archives for
recording app or check Applevis, there have been many discussions about
them. The ones that come to mind are List Recorder, Dropvox and Recording
 Pro.

I have found a way to see the newest news feed items on Facebook. Someone with
site helped me to find this option. I can't seem to flick to it, so this is
how you find it. Find the photos button near the top of the screen and just
under it, you should see the new stories button. If you look near the top of
the screen you will also find the main menu button as well as messages and
notifications, and friend requests.

Hope this helps.

The app is working very well for me. I think people just need to give it a
chance and not jump to conclusions. They have made the app accessible well
ahead of their projected time table. I will definitely be sticking with the
new version. It isn't perfect but it has come a long way and I know it will
only get better from here on in. I think the reason people are having issues
is because things are done differently in the new version. It'll just take
some getting used to.

up isn't really the issue. The app simply doesn't work so releasing a message
with the subject line of Fleksy Now Fully Accessible is more than a little
misleading. And the documentation still has the reference about accessing the
menu using the two-finger swipe up. I think it's clear why they seem to be a
few months ahead of when they thought the product would be ready because it's
not. I truly hope they will leave Fleksy VO untouched and available until
they come up with a product that meets their keyboard integration needs and
 does so with VoiceOver running.

Exactly. Applevis has a blog detailing known bugs and updated features that
you should check out. Plus, their own blog said there were some things they
were still working on. No, the copy and clear and other options are not yet
there, that's part of the problem in this version. The sharing and settings
 options are, though.

It seems that the people at Fleksy have forgotten their original mission...
To bring a accessible keyboard to the visually impaired. As of late they

I will continue to use Fleksy VO until my iPhone will no longer work with

Re: find my friends and Geofences?

2014-03-25 Thread Earle
I have had a similar problem with find my friends. In my case it meant that
people had set notifications to see when I left or arrived at a particular
place. You can see if you have notifications set or if friends have set
notifications to track your location. Double-tap the me button then tap
notifications and see if anything is listed. If you have set notifications you
can hit the edit button and delete them. If a friend has set them you will see
who has set them and you could ask that person to remove them if necessary.

Thanks for your interest in RiVO. Here are replies to your questions:

 1. We're sorry but RiVO is not upgradable. However, it is compatible
across all the iDevice models in its core regarding VoiceOver and it
 smallQWERTY typing interface.

 2. RiVO doesn't support customization. We understand users want
customization, and so we're trying to be as supportive as possible while
maintaining consistency across RiVO models not to make any confusion. Our

interfaces within RiVO. We appreciate your interest and welcome your

Re: How do you sign out of netflix when using voice over

2014-01-15 Thread Earle
Netflix can be a little flakey to deal with. The only way I can get the
sign-out to work is as follows. When I'm in netflix I have to double-tap and
hold on the screen with 1 finger. When VO makes the sound I scroll upwards. I
have to do this several times until the sign-out button is on the screen. I
can then double-tap the button and it will ask me if I'm sure I want to
sign-out. I double-tap yes and I'm done. The point I am trying to make is you
can't just flick to the sign-out button. It will not work that way. There are
a lot of places in Netflix that you also can't just flick to. I really hope
this helps. It actually sounds more complicated than it is. You will get used
to it quickly I think.

Using Apps While On The Phone In iOS 7

2013-09-21 Thread Earle
Now that iOS 7 is officially out, I'd like to know if anyone else is
experiencing the same problem I am. I've been testing iOS 7 and I even noticed
this problem in the betas as well but I was hoping that app updates or even the
final release of iOS 7 would fix it.

I tend to use apps while I'm on the phone and for the most part this is fine.
However, I have found that some apps don't work properly in iOS 7 when you are
on a call.

Fleksy is totally unusable while on the phone. I usually text a fair amount so
this is a big disappointment to me. In iOS 6 I could use it no problem while
on a call.

Another app that has problems while in a call is dice world. Dice world is
usable but if you use the vo hints to tell you your score, they don't read
while on a call. This isn't a big deal for me but it is interesting to note
that some apps seem to not function as expected while on a call.

I had a couple of other examples but honestly they aren't coming to me at the
moment.

Has anyone else had this problem with these apps or with other apps? Maybe I'm
the only strange one that uses other apps while on a call. :) Just thought I'd
put this out there to see what experiences others have had.

usable but if you use the vo hints to tell you your score, they don't read
while on a call. This isn't a big deal for me but it is interesting to note
that some apps seem to not function as expected while on a call.

I had a couple of other examples but honestly they aren't coming to me at
 the moment.

Has anyone else had this problem with these apps or with other apps? Maybe
I'm the only strange one that uses other apps while on a call. :) Just
thought I'd put this out there to see what experiences others have had.

Re: Question about apps working with camera in IOS 7

2013-09-20 Thread Earle
I don't think this is a problem with your device. I've been having a problem
with both of those apps ever since Beta 6 of iOS 7. It persisted through the
GM version as well. I have the latest updates to both apps but the issues
still persist.

Folders can have up to 14 pages of apps in them. Each page holds 9 apps.
Therefore, folders can hold up to 126 apps.

I don't know if there is a cap on how many pages a folder can have, but my

could have multiple pages in a folder because I hated having multiple folders
with the same name and now I do.

I agree that having to wait for 5 seconds is a bit tedius. This is also where
I notice the sensativity most when working with the screen.
when I was moving apps around, sometimes it would not open the folder I
wanted to move the app into, while at other times it would. Also, if the
folder I wanted to move the app too, was in the first or 4th column, it would
frequently switch to the previous or next page, which got a bit frustrating.
It made moving apps a bit more time consuming then I was used too. I got
better as I worked with it more but was surprised on how quickly the pages
switched. Pages switching quickly is in complete contrast to how it was on
the old IOS, at least that was my experience.

I did notice that the sounds to indicate what position the app was in,
doesn't appear as reliable as prior versions. Sometimes I would hear the blip
and it would say, column 4, row 4 but more often then not, I didn't get any
indication of where I was dragging the app to.

 a couple more comments.
I didn't see a comment on list about folders, but I haven't kept up with all
the mail. Folders are larger, anyone know how much larger they can be, I'm
assuming now you can get 18 items into one which is great, anyone gone
 higher than that?
One thing that does bug me, when moving an item out of a folder you have to
hold it outside the folder for a full 5 seconds before the folder closes,
now that is down right tedious. one or two seconds might be reasonable, but
 five??

Changing Voices On iPhone After Jailbraking

2013-02-14 Thread Earle
Having trouble getting new voices to work after trying to change voices on my
iPhone 5. I'm following the instructions to the letter, but no luck. If I
outline what I've done, I'm hoping someone out there can tell me where I'm
going wrong. I've tried with Tom and Lee, and no luck either way. I've tried
changing the Irish voice and then I tried changing the U.S english voice. No
luck either way though. I even tried different variants of the voices as well.

1. Put the following files into a folder so I'd have them all in 1 place.
clc_ena_cfg3.dat
clc_ena_lee_cfg3.dat
select_lee_bet2f22.dat
synth_lee_dri40_vssq5_f22.dat
uselect_lee_dri40.dat
I also renamed the proper .hdr file to broker.hdr and put it in the folder as
well.
I made sure that I chose the correct files depending on the variant and voice I
was using.
2. I navigated to the proper folder on my device and deleted everything in the
folder. Like I said, I tried with the U.S english folder as well as the Irish
folder.
3. I selected all the files I'd prepared for my voice and placed them into the
now empty folder on my device.
4. I rebooted the device, and when I went to the language in the router where
the new voice should have been, everything was silent.
5. I once again navigated to the folder on my device. Deleted everything, and
put the original files back.
6. The original voice is working fine again.

Can anyone see what I might be doing wrong? The Irish voice folder didn't have
a user rules .txt file and I didn't really think that mattered. I also made
sure that use compact voice was turned on. I'm totally stumped. Any help
would be most appreciated.

WinterBoard On iPhone 5

2013-02-11 Thread Earle
Is anyone currently using WinterBoard on an iPhone 5. After jailbreaking, I
installed WinterBoard so I could use some
of the different themes that are out there. I can't seem to get any of them to
work though. After choosing the theme I
want and respringing, nothing happens. Specifically, I was trying to get the
Alex UI to work. I even tried turning
SummerBoard on, and no luck. There didn't seem to be any compatibility
warnings with the iPhone 5, at least not that I
saw in the description for WinterBoard. Just wondering if anyone else has had
luck with winterboard and iPhone 5.

Thanks

Accessible Speed Test App

2012-10-08 Thread Earle
Just wondering if anyone knows of an accessible speed test app? I thought I
remember reading somewhere, that someone had found one. A google search of this
list turned up nothing for me. Any info would be most appreciated.

Re: What happened to the speaker volume control

2012-09-30 Thread Earle
I'm not having any voiceover volume issues on my iPhone 5 while in a call. I
can hear voiceover just fine. The change with buttons are set to off. This is
just my personal preference. I never had this problem on my 3 GS with iOS 6
either. In fact, with the 5 I sometimes have to turn voiceover down a little
while in a call. It seems as though voiceover and sounds in general are louder
on the 5. I'm trying to find that right combination of voiceover volume and
sound volume.

Yes, same here. I guess Ricardo must have the only 4S or maybe one of the
very few 4S phones which don’t have that problem. I did a full factory
restore a couple of days after I installed iOS 6 and it fixed the problem I
had with the playback controls not showing up in the lock screen
consistently. It also seems to have greatly improved the custom labeling
problem, at least it appears to have done so since I was able to label 3
weirdly labeled buttons in the Sonos app which before I was not able to
change. As far as the Voiceover volume during a call bug I still have it. It
maybe that it is slightly better, I can hear Voiceover relatively well in a
quiet environment, at least so that it’s useable. But I still can’t turn down
the call volume very much, just to a point and putting VO volume to 100%
using the rotor does not make it as loud as in iOS 5 where balancing the 2
volumes was easy to do. I have definitely reported this to Apple, let’s hope
the first iOS 6 update will address a few of the more annoying issues.

 Regards,
 Sieghard

Re: how's iOS 6 on 3GS?

2012-09-21 Thread Earle
Mine is fine as well. In fact, I think touch typing is even more responsive
than it was before. Part of that could be because of the way the shift, more,
and delete keys are handled now. I still can't wait to get an iPhone 5 in a
couple of months, but for now my 3 GS is just fine.

Re: Scanning Apps

I agree that the camera wouldn't be good enough to scan on an iPod. I do use
Prizmo on my iPhone 3GS and I am able to get readable results. It took me a
lot to get going with it, but I do actually use Prizmo on a fairly regular

I've never had an issue with the volume. The volume seems to stay wherever I

If I dictate an email or text message, I can flick around the screen or even
