Gary Ray here. I was diagnosed with severe sa. My breathing stopped about 60 times per hour when I had the sleep study. I did ask the doctored about sleeping without the machine. They preferred that I take the machine with me whenever I traveled but it is a pain. When I pressed the doctor, I was told that I should use my best judgement but I should try to use it all the time. I had such a tussle getting used to the mask that my sleep study folks have referred me for the Inspire sa surgery.
