RE: Pairing hearing aids to phone.

2019-06-17 Thread Jeff Clark
Carolyn,

My wife has the Otticon hearing aids and she pairs it through the accessibility
settings. Go to settings, general, accessibility, MFI hearing device. Click on
Otticon1. There should be a button that shows up to pair. You need to do the
left and right aids separately.

Hope this helps.
Jeff

Thats a great suggestion. I forgot to mention that to Carolyn. I often have

Carolyn, what I'm getting ready to tell you may not work, in fact, you may

have already tried it already. Hardware and software can be strange and not

work, so here's what I had to do with something a bit more simpler, having

to do with a bluetooth keyboard. But I could not get that thing to pare and

it was setting right in the bluetooth devices. So I turned the bluetooth

keyboard off, and I decided to tell the iphone to forget about the device.

then I turned the bluetooth on the iphone, off and then back on. and then I

turned the bluetooth keyboard back on, and the iphone was ready to pare. It

gave me a code to type in on the bluetooth keyboard, and I typed it in, and

hit enter and I was done. It began working perfectly then. Give that a try,

and if that doesn't work I'll see what I could do to come up with something

else. I hope it works for you.

I put in new batteries. It must have paired with them, named them Oticon,

in Bluetooth or in MFI. I am afraid I'm going to have to end up going to the

RE: 5 hidden iPhone features even power users probably don't know about, BGR

2019-03-10 Thread Jeff Clark
Great post. Does anyone know if the DND location setting keeps its location the
next time you enter that area. For example, I have a meeting in a location,
turn on the do not disturb until I leave that location, leave that location and
come back the next day. Will the setting be automatic the next day? Or do I
have to go into control center and turn back on.
Hope everyone understands my question.

5 hidden iPhone features even power users probably don't know about, BGR

Remember when Android phones first started to get popular? People who chose
Android over iOS would constantly brag about how much more capable and
versatile their smartphones were compare to iPhones. And back in those days,
they were right. Apple's iPhone prioritized simplicity over versatility and
many features that had been available for years on other smartphone platforms
were omitted. Of course, plenty has changed since the early days.
The iOS platform has grown over the years into one of the most feature-packed
software platforms that has ever existed. In fact, there's so much packed into
modern versions of iOS that it's impossible to remember all of the nifty
features and functions that are available to users these days.

We regularly round up cool iOS features to share them with readers so that they
can get the most out of their iPhones and iPads. After all, there could be
great functionality hiding in there that will make your life easier, but it's
obviously useless if you don't even know it exists. This time around, we've put
together five wonderfully useful features that are buried so deep in iOS, even
power users probably don't know about them. We're not talking about 3D Touching
the keyboard to turn it into a trackpad here. No, we've got some awesome
features for you that are so well hidden, we guarantee even the most hardcore
Apple fans will learn something new before they leave.

Location-based DND
This first tip might be my favorite, and I have to be honest: I had no idea
this feature was available until I came across a post about it on Reddit.

Do Not Disturb is a wonderfully useful feature that silences any and all
unwanted notifications while you're sleeping at night. Sure it would be nice if
you could set different scheduled for weekdays and weekend days, but that's
neither here nor there. DND lets your phone continue to receive all those
emails, Facebook messages, and everything else that floods your phone, but it
remains silent so as not to disturb you.

There are a few nifty options to be found in the DND section of the iOS
Settings app, but there's one fantastic feature you'll only find if you look
elsewhere: location-based Do Not Disturb. Using this hidden feature, you can
silence notifications on your iPhone while in a certain location, and then DND
will automatically be disabled when you leave. How will your iPhone know you've
left? It uses the same GPS and cell-based positioning tech needed for all of
the iPhone's location-based features.

Next time you go to the movies, swipe down to open the Control Center on your
iPhone and then 3D Touch the DND icon that looks like a sliver of the Moon
(press firmly). You'll see the menu above pop up, and then you can just tap on
"Until I leave this location."

Rearrange apps more efficiently
Tap lightly and hold on any app icon, and your apps will begin to jiggle.
You can then drag them around as much as you want to rearrange them, your hold
one app above another to create a folder. Most iOS device users are probably
aware of this functionality, but you might not know that there are a bunch of
different things you can do to make your life easier while rearranging apps.

As seen in the GIF above, you can grab multiple apps at once to move them as a
group to a new page, for example. Tap lightly and hold on one app, and then
continue to hold it while you tap with another finger on other apps.
You can also use another finger to swipe between home screen pages while
holding onto one or more apps.

Getting apps into folders can sometimes be a pain because the folder jumps from
side to side as you try to hover over it. Instead of doing it that way, just
tap any fold with another finger while you're holding onto one or more apps.
Presto, it's open!

Pump up the volume
This is another nifty feature I wasn't aware of until I found it on Reddit.

If you use your phone's stereo loudspeakers to listen to music and you find
that it doesn't quite get loud enough, there's a setting buried in your iPhone
that will crank the volume up to 11. Open the iOS Settings app and scroll down
to Music. Then tap on EQ, and select "Late Night."

App notifications in folders
Do you keep lot

I’ve not been on this list long, but I think it’s hypocritical for Mark to

absolutely about blindness.

No one complains when the subscription service for Apple Music is discussed. No

Mark, I am so surprised that as one entrusted in a leadership position of a

Hi Mark and everyone. Given this new policy, I'll be unsubscribing after around
9 years on the group, but I want to express my disappointment about this change.
During Cara's excellent and even-handed leadership of this group, we had many
occasions where app developers would engage with us about their apps,
especially when those apps were blindness specific.
Since this particular app was one that has come up here on multiple occasions,
with some mentioning it as one of their top apps of 2018, it seemed
appropriate, on-topic, and of value to interested members to let them know
about recent developments, especially a free trial. This has been welcomed on
other groups.
It's a difficult and false distinction to separate the app from the service,
when the app is the vehicle for that service.
Further, the service itself would in the past have been considered on-topic,
because one uses it on an iPhone and it is blindness specific.
Anyway, I've learned a great deal over the last 9 years, so thanks to everyone
for that.
Should you wish to be on a group where app developers and users can freely
interact, you're welcome to join my BlindPhones list, which covers both iOS and
Android. If an app developer wishes to take time to engage, they are welcomed
with open arms.

Travel websites

2018-09-05 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello,

Over the years, I have noticed that travel website such as Priceline and
many others have become difficult if not impossible to navigate using JAWS.

Anyone out there have a favorite travel booking site that is navigable with
JAWS?

Thanks,

Jeff

Talking/accessible thermostats

Hello,

Not sure if this topic has been discussed before. I am in need of purchasing
a replacement thermostat and looking for feedback from others of what people
are using. The VIP 1007 bit the dust and I am looking for different options
including, but not limited to talking thermostats. I know there are smart
ones out there with Alexa and IOS, but I would like to know how accessible
they are.

Thanks in advance,

RE: AirPods

You can also open the charging case/holder a few inches away from your phone
and in a few seconds a window pops up where the left and right earpiece battery
status as well as the charging case status is shown. You are unable to swipe to
hear the different statuses however just run your finger around the screen and
it works.

For about the last 10 months, I have had this issue. Basically, before you
start writing out your message, the submit button is there. However, once your
message is complete, the only way the text can be submitted, is if a sighted
person turns off voiceover, and hits the submit button. Unfortunately, I'm not
sure if there is a way to email them, if you aren't either using the help
section, or using one of your previous trips, and then you can only email or
write about specific things. You could try going through Facebook, and either
leaving a message on their Facebook page, or through Facebook messenger. That
is the only option I can think of at this time.

RE: some uber and lift questions

2017-09-06 Thread Jeff Clark
Hi,
I do think Lyft and Uber are about the same. I use them both depending on
availability at that time and place.
Concerning letting the driver know. I will message the driver ahead of time
letting him/her know that I am visually impaired and to please identify
themselves when arriving. If I do not get a response prior to them arriving,
then I will call them after 30 seconds or so after the time hits 1 minute. It
may likely be that they didn't get or read my message. If it is really busy in
the pickup location, I will sometimes describe myself as having a white cane or
my guide dog.
All methods seem to work really well and I have not had many issues.

Hey guys,

OK, i wanted some input here on a few things with uber and lift? What
1 do you guys like better? It seems like almost 6 of 1, half dozen of the
other if you know what i mean. Both apps seem to be accessible.
Also, when you are in a place, how do you usually explain to the driver how to
find you since you can't see them coming, like if i'm at the gym or something
and need them to pick me u, how would i know it's their car outside. Also if
anyone has used both, does 1 usually have a better price than the other?

Cheers,
Jed.

RE: Accessible Scale with IOS

2017-07-15 Thread Jeff Clark
Yes, it is easy to pair and connects through WIFI. The App is accessible and my
wife and I can keep separate history logs by installing the app on our
individual IPhones. You need to keep in mind 2 things. Only one phone should
have the app open at a time, the scale will send the data to the device with
the open app. Second, if you have your phone connecting to more then one WIFI
access point, you need to be sure that your device matches the connection that
the scale is linked to. Had a crazy time once trying to figure out why the my
phone was not receiving the data.

Has anyone found a reliable digital scale that interfaces with the iPhone,
preferably one that also measures BMI or percentage of body fat? Any
suggestions would be great. Thanks.

First of all, I don't know about other cities, but in Atlanta, there is an
option in the menu for gift cards. It allows you to send other Uber riders gift
cards, but I guess you could also send yourself one as well. It's in the menu
where you would find information about your trips, as well as your payment
options etc. I have also seen them in places like CVS pharmacy, and Kroger, if
you have those near you. My only issue with Uber at this time is, when I have
to write to them regarding an issue that I've had with one of my trips, I have
to get someone cited to assist me with that because the submit button is no
longer available and the app. It hasn't really been readily available since the
last major update was done to their app in November. Actually, before I start
writing my complaint, the submit button is there. However, once my complaint is
ready to be submitted, I have to turn off voiceover, and have someone select
the submit button for me. It is not there when voiceover is turned on. I
suppose you can actually go to the Uber website, and submit your complaint that
way. But submitting it through the app is so much easier, so I plan to write to
them regarding this issue.

Subject: Re: Amazon Video

Hi, Terri.

I'm a regular user of the Amazon Video app and so I will try and answer your
questions.

> >A friend was telling me about Amazon Video. They were saying that the
> app was free, that you only pay for what you download.
The app itself is free. How much free content you get depends on whether
you're a member of Amazon Prime. If you're a Prime member, Amazon
provides a good deal of free content from its video library. If you're
not a Prime member, I don't believe the app offers anything in the way
of free content. In either case, Amazon has a selection of movies and TV
shows that you can purchase or rent.

> >Is it pretty reasonably priced to rent a movie?
> I believe so but it's been a while since I've looked at rental prices.

> >They said you can buy movies as well.
> Yes.

> >Can you purchase tv shows?
> Yes. You can either purchase individual episodes or entire seasons.

> >I would imagine that this would be pretty expensive, though?
It depends on the movie or TV show. Some seasons might only cost $15-20,
some might be more expensive. You should visit Amazon's site and look at
prices for Instant Video, which is what you're looking for when it comes
to the app. Unfortunately, you can't use the app itself to purchase
content, although you can use it to search for it.
> >And I would imagine all that video would take up a lot of room?
>
> Does anything you purchase, have to stay on your device?
All shows and movies can be streamed and so they won't take up any extra
space. They can be downloaded for offline listening/viewing but this
isn't the default.

>
> >And of course, is this app pretty accessible?
It is quite accessible. The only issue you'll have a problem with is
their list of premium channels for renting content. Instead of reading
the name of the channel, VoiceOver just says "opens the landing view."

IOS 10 and "finish moving insertion point"

2016-10-02 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello,

I just updated to IOS 10 on my IPhone 6s. I am puzzled on the voiceover
message that reads "finish moving insertion point" as I try to enter text
into an edit box. This occurs in edit boxes with text messaging, Safari,
e-mail and pretty much anything I have to enter text into. Anyone know how I
may turn this off or manage this annoyance?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Does anyone have any experience with the Withings scale other than that
provided by Jonathan? I am currently looking for a scale but have been sort of
scared off by the bad reviews. The factor that bothers me is that people seem
to be reporting that the scale is requesting the identity of the individual
trying to use it and it must be selected. I only have two people in my
household but I would not want it to fail to work because it needs a selection.
There are also lots of complaints about other things. I was hoping to find some
positive feedback from a blind user before purchasing but I may just buy it and
see what happens.

RE: Apple Confirms iOS 9.3.4 Has A Nasty Surprise

2016-08-26 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello everyone,

What I do is take my thumb, cover the speaker at the bottom of the phone while

I've had this happen as well, but not very often. I just turn off speech with a
three-finger double-tap, do a two-finger double-tap to sttart dictation, do
another two-finger double-tap to stop dictation, then do another three-finger
double-tap to turn speech back on when this issue comes up. Like I said, it's
not too offen, and it's easy enough to deal with, if a bit annoying. What I'm
more troubled by is the reports on AppleVis about battery life being reduced
with iOS 9.3.4, in some cases quite seriously.

Interesting how not a single message about this issue was posted on this list.
Dictation may not work in 9.3.4, but it definitely worked in previous iOS 9

RE: Heart Rate Monitors and other health/fitness stuff

2015-07-17 Thread Jeff Clark
Sieghard,

I was in your dilemma about 4 weeks ago and found pretty good luck with the
following setup. Polar H7 using the Runkeeper app. The Runkeeper app has some
Voiceover issues when I first entered my height/weight etc., but I didn’t enter
my info during the initial setup and modified it after setting up the app.
Other than that, the app runs pretty good. If you want current pulse and
aerobic info there is a GPS button on the screen that you click into to get the
self-voicing info.

Both my wife and I are using this setup with success. Another tip is to ensure
rinsing the Polar monitor contacts both on the strap and unit to ensure a good
contact. Keep the contacts moist or it will not transmit to Runkeeper. You may
have to play around a little to get the right moisture levels. I just take the
strap, run it under the sink for a second and good to go. Yes, it’s a little
cold when you put the strap on. LOL

Hope this helps and contact me with any further questions.

Hi,

Just wanted some opinions from anybody who uses a heart rate monitor for
running/working out like which brand/model do you have and which apps do you
use it with.

I am considering the Polar H7 or Wahoo Tickr or Wahoo Tickr Run. Both have
their own apps but also work with over 50 third-party apps including Runkeeper
and Runtastic. In addition to hardware feedback on the actual HRM I am
interested to hear about accessibility of the various apps people use.

Also, I am interested in the same information regarding wireless blood pressure
monitors and body scales.

Best regards,

Sieghard

Bluetooth Heart Rate Monitor Update

2015-06-14 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello,

I posted an inquiry about Bluetooth heart rate monitors a few days ago. Well
after a bit of research and luck, I found a device that works with
voiceover. I bought the Polar H7 heart rate chest monitor on Amazon for
about $50. I used Runkeeper app to pair the monitor with my IPhone 5s. It
works good and I have no problems as of now.

I am in the process of trying other apps that are voiceover friendly to
maybe get a better app experience.

kidding. I haven't encountered any areas where anything has been misspoken with
voiceOver as of yet.
I hope that helps.

Subject: Mobile Banking Apps - Santander Bank

Hello,
Not sure if there has been conversation about banking mobile apps, but I have
some questions for the group.
I heard that the Santander Bank mobile app allows you to deposit checks with
the app. Has anyone tried this with any mobile apps?
Is anyone specifically using the Santander Bank app, I have run into trouble
with accessing buttons and it speaking foreign languages. Before I talk to tech
support tomorrow, I thought I would post.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff

Be My Eyes App

2015-06-06 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello Everyone,

Wondering how many people have successfully connected to a person on the Be My
Eyes app. When it first came out, I tried it and it worked great. I loved it.
Over the past several weeks, there were times when I tried it and the system
rang for a period of time without answer. I tried different times of the day
and week without success.

Does anyone have any tips on working the app?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Money Reader for Euros

2015-03-20 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello,

I live in the US and will be traveling to Europe in a couple of weeks. I am
curious if any of the money reading apps such as money reader can handle the
Euro currency.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

RE: Uber app

2015-01-28 Thread Jeff Clark
Yes, the rating screen still works the same. This should not impact your
ability to get back home. The ratings and comments are sent to the Uber main
office and I don't think they will help with your return trip that same day. I
had an issue with a driver last Sunday and added to the comments about his
issues with taking my guide dog and Uber customer service was quick to respond
that same day. They responded via e-mail after my return trip home. It didn't
impact my return trip and they even refunded my fare as well as erased the
rating from that driver who likely gave me a poor rating due to bringing my
service dog. They escalated this guide dog issue to the headquarters and they
appear to be working with the driver to ensure that others with service animals
do not have issues in the future. They even called me the next day to listen to
my complaint. I think they are doing pretty good in addressing customer
relations. At least in the Philadelphia area.

Does the driver rating screen still work the same as it has for awhile now, or
is that an issue to watch out for? I don't want to get myself stranded
somewhere because I couldn't rate the previous driver and book the trip home.

Hello,
You can still use the app. The first screen has been changed to make it more
difficult when using voiceover. You can't use the swipe gesture at the top of
the screen, just the bottom when choosing which service such as UberX or SUV,
ETC. At the top, just move your finger around the screen to choose the options.

Ryan,
I have done the same. To avoid the reverse, be sure you tap "set pickup
location" on the main screen. From there swipe to "add destination". This is
where you place your destination. You can either get your fare estimate or
request the ride on that screen.
Hope this helps.

IPad Mini and bluetooth keyboards

2014-12-09 Thread Jeff Clark
Hello,

Does anyone know if the Amazon Basic Bluetooth keyboard is compatible with
IOS 8.1? I upgraded my IPad Mini and Iphone 5s to the latest IOS .1 and the
keyboard is not working correctly. Specifically using the keyboard to enter
text in edit boxes. I have an another IPAD mini with IOS 7 and it works
fine. Does anyone know what I may do with the Amazon keyboard to have it
work correctly? Firmware update or something?

Ok, now if this is a barrier with the IOS 8.1, can I put my IPad back to IOS
7? Any recommendations for Bluetooth keyboards that will work with IOS 8 and
voiceover?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff
